do. kevin bacon. that does it for us this morning. ana cabrera picks up the coverage right now. right now on "ana cabrera reports," israel and hamas extend their tenuous truce with more israeli hostages expected to be released today. as we hear from the family of freed 4-year-old american for the first time. >> she's been reunited with her brother and her sister. and that was magical in the sense that the brother and sister who for 50 days waited and hoped that abigail would come home. >> plus, a u.n. official calling conditions inside gaza catastrophic. i'll talk to a red cross official about the aid now getting in during this pause. also ahead, presidents and first ladies gathering today in georgia for a tribute service for rosalynn carter. her husband of seven decades expected to leave hospice c to attend his beloved wife's memorial. and later, a brutal winter blast taking aim at the northeast. millions of americans enduring temperatures up to 20 degrees below normal. hi there. good to be with you. it is 10:00 eastern. i'm ana cabrera reporting from new york. we begin with some breaking news in the israel-hamas war. more hostages expected to be released today after israel and hamas agreed to extend their fragile truce by another two days, possibly longer. that new exchange of hostages and prisoners could happen at any moment. 11 more israeli families celebrated the release of their loved ones yesterday, including 12-year-old etan yahalomi. there he is hugging his mom. nine hostages released yesterday were children. also developing, the first humanitarian aid flight from the u.s. will arrive in egypt today, carrying desperately needed relief for the people of gaza. nbc's raf sanchez joins us now from tel aviv, israel. and aaron gilchrist at the white house. do we have any idea of how many hostages will be released today under this extended truce and when that might happen? >> so, ana, the terms for extending the truce, ten hostages per day for each additional day of cease-fire. so our expectation is that at some point in the next couple of hours, ten israeli hostages will emerge from gaza. it is 5:00 here. this is normally around the time that we start to see what is happening inside gaza. we're now used to the choreography. hamas gunmen handing these hostages to the red cross, filming it all for their own propaganda purposes. but, ana, you talked about this be fragile truce and we were reminded today of how fragile it is. the israeli military says there were three explosions aimed at its forces in northern gaza earlier. it says a number of its troops were lightly injured and in one instance there was an exchange of gunfire between israeli forces and palestinian militants. we don't know if the attackers were from hamas, from palestinian islamic jihad, if they were from some smaller faction. israeli military is saying this is a clear and blatant violation of the cease-fire. but so far it doesn't seem to be collapsing the overall agreement and as far as we know, tonight's hostage release is still on in exchange for the palestinian prisoners, 30 of whom we believe will be released from prisons in east jerusalem and the occupied west bank in exchange for those hostages. ana? >> i want to show a heart warming moment after three children from the same family were released and there you stheem, reunited with their dog this is the a children's hospital in israel. those children ages 4, 8 and 10 are among at least 25 children released since friday. and, raf, you had a chance to talk to another boy, another family and you learned more about what happened during their cap pivot. what are you learning? >> reporter: yeah, ana, we have been trying to answer those questions that we have all been asking the last seven weeks, what kind of conditions were those hostages inside gaza being held in and we have the chance to speak to the family of ohad, who was released with his mother and his grandmother and one of their relatives told us a little bit about the conditions they were in. take a listen. >> they were with one guy who kept them all the time. and she told me that all the time he did like that. so they were scared. they were whispering. >> were they ever tortured by hamas? >> no, i don't think so. >> reporter: the family says they never saw other hostages, and were moved constantly. sometimes held in tunnels like this, other times in houses or apartments. >> they didn't get a lot of food. to go to the bathroom, they had to knock on the door, and then one and a half hours waiting or two hours. >> reporter: cut off from the world, they had no idea about the scale of the october 7th attack. or the global effort to bring them home. >> he told me, i was on the television? are you serious? i said, i told her, your picture is all over the world. >> they also didn't know ohad's grandfather was alive, but remains a hostage. and found out they were being freed just hours before it happened. and ohad is in good health, along with his mother and his grandmother. owe was released from a children's hospital in the tel aviv area. he's back home. he has a long journey ahead of him, just to be a kid again, but he's in good spirits. >> a journey for quite some time for all these families. so glad he's been reunited with his family. aaron, what more do we know about this first humanitarian flight coming from the u.s., as well as the u.s. efforts to further extend this truce and get more hostages home? >> reporter: yeah, this first humanitarian flight, u.s. military facilitated flight expected to land today in egypt and then the supplies on that aircraft will be off loaded to the united nations to get into gaza. we know there are two additional flights that will be happening as well, carrying food, water, medicine, and gear for people in gaza to start preparing for the winter that is coming in that part of the world. at the same time, we know there is an effort now to work further on the idea of a truce and releasing more hostages. we have been able to confirm today that the cia director, bill burns, is in doha, qatar, right now, working on that very issue, the idea of extending the cease-fire and the hostage release effort beyond the two-day extension that we're in right now. the cia director has been deeply involved in this process. we know that after the israelis designated the head of their intelligence agency to work on the text of a deal, of a cease-fire and hostage release deal, the cia director bill burns began working with him and our understanding is that the two of them now are working with their qatari counterparts on what an extended cease-fire, something beyond this week would look like, potentially including the release of men at the same time, ana, we also know that secretary of state antony blinken will be going back to tel aviv this week and to the west bank. again, the effort to work on getting more humanitarian aid into gaza, to get more hostages released and then the secretary said there is an effort that needs to be made around working on what happens after all of this is over, wanting to see a two-state solution, palestinians living in their own state next to an israeli state, ana. >> aaron gilchrist and raf sanchez, thank you very much. joining us now is mark regev, senior adviser to israeli prime minister netanyahu and former ambassador to the uk. ambassador, thank you for taking the time. the idf announced there were these three explosions in the north gaza strip this morning, and according to the idf, several fighters were injured. hamas is blaming israel, calling this a clear violation of the truce agreement. so, just to clarify right now what is going on here, is the current cease-fire holding? >> so we obviously had an incident, our forces returned fire. but from our perspective, i think the incident is closed, and we are still on, i believe, for the release of ten additional hostages, women and children, tonight. and if that goes ahead, that will take the number of released hostages to 60. that's a number that is increasingly impressive. we are working hard together with washington, together with president biden, to get as many of these women and children out as is possible. >> so, how long is israel hoping this pause in fighting will last? >> so, we made our position clear, and it has been clear for days now. we agree to extend the cease-fire every day for an additional ten hostages. so, as long as hamas keeps facilitating the release of hostages, this humanitarian pause can continue. so, in many ways, those in the international community who are interested in the continuation of this pause, they should be urging hamas, pressuring hamas, keep releasing hostages. >> we know the hostages so far have been all women and children, as young as 2, as old as 85. and there are 51 so far. there are adult men who are also taken hostage by hamas. these are fathers, husbands, sons. are there negotiations happening currently about getting them out? >> you're 100% correct, ana. we know there are 173 hostages still held by hamas. of them, 128 men. and 45 women. so, of that 45 women, hopefully we'll see a large group come out in the next two days, where we're supposed to have ten today and ten tomorrow. if we can extend it, in other words, if hamas agrees to continue releasing hostages, that will be a good thing. ultimately we want to see them all home. that's one of the aims of our operation. it is to defeat hamas, to end its rule over gaza and get all our hostages home. >> real quickly, have you received proof of life to know that those 175 hostages, 73 hostages, 173, if i do my math correctly, are still alive? >> so, i'd like to be able to tell you i know they're all alive, but i can't do that. we don't know that for sure. we're, of course, worried. we had two examples already of hostages that were taken on october 7th on that terrible day of the massacre, two women, both of them we found their bodies in gaza dead. both of them were taken alive. so, of cose, we fear for the fa all those hostages. and that's why it is so important that it is an opportunity to get them out now. let's get them out as quickly as possible because as long as they're under hamas' control, they continue to -- those who are still alive continue to be in grave danger. >> and ambassador, what is your response to those who are hoping that this is the beginning of the end, this temporary cease-fire sort of day to day and they're seeing this perhaps as a possible segue to broader peace talks that could end this war. >> so i understand that people want to see the end of bloodshed. we would like to see the end of bloodshed also. but you can't have a quick fix that just creates more bloodshed tomorrow. and anything that leaves hamas in power, just guarantees that. the hamas leadership has repeatedly said they would do the october 7th massacre again and again and again. this is a brutal, violent, extremist fanatical terrorist organization. there is no co-existence with hamas. we saw that on october 7th. i would say more than that, that the threat of renewed israeli military action is actually driving the release of hostages, because we have been hitting hamas hard as you know. we have been destroying its military machine, we have been eliminating its senior command, and the -- their desire for a time-out is actually driving the release of hostages. >> quickly, if you will, on sunday, hamas acknowledged four senior leaders had been killed so far. the idf reported, you know, dozens of other hamas fighters killed or captured in the past several weeks. if the goal is to eradicate hamas, can you give us a tangible sense of just how far along israel is in achieving that goal? what percentage of hamas is left? >> so, we're not there yet, that's clear. we're taking a pause to get our people out. the mere fact that hamas has agreed to the release of hostages shows you what pressure they're under, and that pressure will increase until we have a new situation in gaza where hamas no longer runs that territory, and that will be good for the people of israel, who don't have to live in fear of constant terror attacks from the gaza strip, but it is ultimately also good for the palestinians who live in gaza, who deserve better than this terrorist extremist regime that doesn't give a hoot about the world and the people of gaza. >> ambassador mark regev, we appreciate you joining us. thank you for continuing the dialogue and keeping us updated. good to have you here. when we're back in 60 seconds, catastrophic, that's how one u.n. official describes the humanitarian situation in gaza. i'll talk to the international committee of the red cross about what the people there need now. plus, one mother's hope to be reunited with her son still held captive by hamas. her message to the world and her son. and later, an update on the medical condition of the three students of palestinian descent shot in vermont f palestinian de shot in vermon . . a few years ago, i came to saona, they told me there's no electricity on the island. we always thought that whatever we did here would be an emblem of what small communities can achieve. trying to give a better life to people that don't have the means to do it. si mi papá estuviera vivo, sé que él tuviera orgulloso también de vivir de esta viviendo una vida como la que estamos viviendo ahora. es electricidad aquí es salud. the pause in fighting between israel and hamas is allowing a trickle of desperately needed aid into gaza, around 200 aid trucks made it over the border since this fragile cease-fire began a day ago or so. now, this is just a fraction of what would have crossed into gaza prior to october 7th. so, again, we're talking 200 aid trucks in the past 24 hours, about 2,000 since this start of the war. and the pause in fighting now is revealing the sheer scope of the damage. a senior united nations official is now calling the humanitarian situation there catastrophic. the death toll believed to be over 14,000 people and more than 1.7 million are displaced. that's about 80% of the population. and i want to show you what parts of gaza look like today. right there on the left is gaza's knn soldiers square, back in july of '22. on the right is today. looks like an empty lot. and take a look at this, a library in july of last year, and now the book case, a rubble. let's bring in the spokesperson for international committee of the red cross, jason strazuso. looking at the before and afters, where are all the displaced people now and what are the conditions they're living in? >> we had a team from the red cross move into northern gaza just a day or two ago and they reported back to us today. and they said exactly what you're saying, they said the entire area is a disaster. and that what caught their attention is though there has been a large movement of people from northern gaza to southern gaza, there is a lot of people living among the rubble in just precarious, dire, we're now moving into the winter, cold situation. you asked what the population movement looks like. we have seen a constant stream of people moving from the north to the south. so that's just creating -- it is shifting the humanitarian crisis from the north to the south because now you have thousands of people sleeping out in the open. and we're seeing the same things over and over. but they haven't been fixed and they're not getting any better. they don't -- there is not enough food available. there is not enough clean water available. and there is not enough medical care available and we could look at each of those things individually and break each one of those down. >> wow. so, all these people moving south. there is not enough shelter available either when you have that many displaced people. you talk about people just sleeping out in the open. i want to paint a greater picture of how much things have changed. also since this war began. but before october 7th, more than 10,000 truck loads per month would be going into gaza. and since october 7th, as we mentioned, the past seven weeks, just over 2,000 trucks of aid have gone into gaza. some things we know are getting back to normal a little bit during this pause. the cease-fire. you can see here some stalls are out, food is being baked. but this is all just temporary, right? how do you ensure trucks keep getting in and that those needs are being met, at least the bare minimum level? >> i think that the aid organizations collectively are trying as hard as they can to move assistance over the border, but it has been slow and it has been not enough, so those conversations are happening. my organization, the international community of the red cross had one truck of assistance move over today. that was filled with medical items. it was filled with medication, pain relievers, this is important because our surgical team has done more than 100 operations, four-person team has done more than 100 operations in the last four weeks and they're operating knowing that they don't have enough gauze or they don't have enough painkillers when they're carrying out medical operation. and you can multiply that across all the medical facilities. there is this -- we're still happy we got in one truck today, and it is clearly not anywhere close to enough, but to provide one more picture, it was just yesterday, the day before, that 800 people in medical need showed up at the facility, the european gaza hospital that our red cross team is working at. you have 800 people walking in the door, a lot of people with open wounds, open wounds that should have been treated days ago, hadn't been treated yet. any one of your viewers has been in a medical facility, a doctor's office or hospital, and when it is busy, and you know you're sitting there waiting for help, but if you imagine not a couple dozen people who walk into the waiting room and need help, but 800 people, and that's the overwhelming need that all the medical staff across gaza are facing. >> and before we let you go, i have to ask you about the hostage situation. the international red cross has been taking custody of the released hostages from hamas. so, can you talk to us about what that process has been like, the condition you're finding these hostages in, and can you confirm whether you have had access as an organization to those who are still being held hostage? >> so, we have done -- as the world knows, i'm not breaking any news here, we have participated in four operations the last four days. the one that took place yesterday, there were five children among the hostages released by hamas and my colleagues said that this was really difficult because these children weren't accompanied by their parents. so they were alone. and so they had a very difficult seven or eight weeks in captivity and then they're in a situation where they're moved in the middle of the night, they don't necessarily know who we are, the red cross, but we do take them and get down to their level and try to reassure them. it is a heart breaking situation, just in those few minutes that we are with them. reminder of how heart breaking the situation is for all the hostages, but especially these young children. >> no doubt. >> you also asked -- you also asked if we have access to the hostages we haven't visited. the families are desperate pleading for us to do that. we hear those cries, they're coming internally, this is something we must accomplish. but the fact remains that we are a humanitarian organization, we don't have any military power or military might. so we can't force our way into a location where we don't have permission to be and then even potentially put hostages in danger if we were to try to do that. the answer is, no, we don't have that access yet but we're working with hamas, insisting with hamas that they honor their obligations, honor international law, and humanitarian approach to their captivity, their holding of these hostages and allow us to make the visits. >> jason, thank you so much for the eye opening conversation, really giving us a sense of what is happening right now in gaza and thank you for all the work you do. your organization. >> thank you. up next on "ana cabrera reports," millions under threat of a bitter arctic blast here in the u.s. which parts of the country are facing some not so wonderful winter weather? agreed to testify before the house oversight committee in december. as long as it is an open public hearing and not a closed door deposition. let's go right to the hill and nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. garrett, is this a done deal? will we see the president's son testify in a few weeks? >> reporter: it doesn't look like a done deal at all, ana. this is a flurry of letters back and forth on capitol hill. first from hunter biden's attorneys saying they would accept an invitation to come and testify on december 13th, but only if it were in public. well, just within the last half hour o so, house oversigh committee chairman james comer responded with a letrf his own that says hunter biden doesn't get to play byis own rules and that the cmiee prefers to have everyone come in first for a closed door deposition. comer does go on to say he does believe hunter biden should testify in public eventually. look, there is a lot of position posturing here and an effort by both sets here, the hunter biden team and his attorneys and the oversight committee to put each other on their back foot. i think we'll see hunter biden up here eventually. there is an impeachment inquiry going on into his father, after all. >> just to shift gears for a moment, we're also tracking developments with embattled new york congressman george santos. he could face expulsion from congress as early as this week. the math doesn't really look good for him as he noted. what could we see happen? >> reporter: the math is bad and getting worse. we have seen a number of lawmakers who defended santos or his right to due process, saying the ethics report that came out before the holidays is just too damning. they would vote to expel him. when they get the chance is the question we're trying to answer today. there was a one resolution calling for santos' expulsion filed before the holiday. there could be another filed today. basically a traffic jam in the house about which of these rees resolutions gets called up and when. i'm looking at thursday. these things take time to get filed and ripen before they can come to the floor. all the momentum here is toward santos' expulsion. he said he has no plans to resign. there is also more conversations going on about trying to avoid a vote with his resignation, i don't see that happening either. >> he says expel me and set the precedent so we can see who the judge, jury and executioners in congress are. so, it's on, it sounds like. >> reporter: no doubt. >> garrett, thank you. keep us posted as always. former president donald trump will be returning to the witness stand in his new york civil fraud trial, this time in his own defense. trump is expected to be the final defense witness in the $250 million fraud case involving his family's business empire. former president first took the stand three weeks ago when he was called by the prosecution. one of his sons, eric, is expected to testify again, this time for the defense. both are scheduled for early december. millions of americans are dealing with winter weather today. heavy lake-effect snow has blanketed parts of the northeast and the midwest with chilly temperatures, 10 to 20 degrees below average. up and down the east coast. nbc's jesse kirsch is joining us from erie, pennsylvania, where the blustery blast made for some hazardous driving conditions. and nbc's angie lassman standing by with the forecast. what are people dealing with there? >> reporter: yeah, ana, i can tell you we're getting hit again with blasts of cold air and brutal winds are churning up the waters out here. we're just off of lake erie. you see the choppy waters, waves crashing behind me here. it is this cold air colliding with the waters of the great lakes, turning parts of the region into a snow globe overnight. following a stormy night of snow, blustery winds and treacherous roads, this morning millions are bracing for the possibility of even more. >> this is a big storm to be our first storm of the year. so, everyone is going to knock the rest off really quick. >> reporter: in michigan and new york, some communities seeing up to a foot of snow or more since monday. drivers trapped and digging out, and some semitrucks even stranded. and in some areas, it is still coming down. this early winter mess courtesy of lake-effect snow, which happens when frigid winds sweep across the great lakes, and relatively warm waters. heat and moisture transforming into clouds, dumping heavy snow in areas downwind. with snowplows gearing up, officials asking the public to prepare as well. >> travelers, please take your time. >> reporter: and while this week's wintry weather is not back up the nation's airports, some drivers are seeing major delays on the roads. like along the i-90 corridor in erie, pennsylvania, where numerous crashes were reported overnight. thankfully most americans do not have to dig out this morning, but millions are waking up to frigid temperatures. >> bundle up the kids when you send them off to school. >> reporter: the holiday season chill stretching along the east coast and west to chicago, bringing temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below average today. and for people trying to catch a flight at some point today, most of you can breathe a sigh of relief. i just checked again on flight tracker, flight aware's website and they're showing fewer than 20 u.s. airports had cancellations. good news for people who were taking to the skies, if you're on the roads and much of this territory where the snow has been falling obviously give yourself a little extra time and millions of people probably going to be bundling up tighter today, ana. >> i see you are bundled up. now go get inside, go get warm, thanks, jesse. angie, show us where the weather is headed next. >> the lake-effect snow unfortunately not going anywhere anytime soon. we have to deal with this downwind of the lakes at least through tomorrow morning in many of these areas. more snow piling up. you see it happening as we speak across the radar of this region. we also got the alerts still in place for 6 million people, in portions of new york, pennsylvania, ohio, and michigan, extending through this region, through at least tomorrow morning and a lot of those spots. here's why. we have strong winds coming off the lake just as jesse explained. this is going to be some really gusty winds, so much so we can see a couple of flurries in new york city. not accumulation type of snow, but the flurries could be out there because of how strong the winds are. that could leave us with reduced visibility and the roads won't be great either. as we get to tomorrow, a lot of that will start to taper off for places like michigan, ohio. but places like new york and pennsylvania could see additional snowfall. and when this is all said and done, we could see snow totals 15 to 20 inches across most places in new york. notice some of the isolated amounts through wednesday that we're expecting, another 6 to 8 inches is possible up to 10. so heads up there, difficult on the roadways. we also have some cool air that has settled in and it has gone as far south as parts of the southeast now dealing with these freed warnings this morning. this is going to go likely until tomorrow morning too. and you can see why. really deep cold across parts of the midwest, chicago, 18 degrees now, but feeling like just seven degrees. we have indianapolis in the teens and with windchill of 8 degrees, new york into the 30s, feeling like the low 30s. this will stick up through tomorrow. if you're looking for improvement into the afternoon hours, you're going to have to wait until the end of the week. 30s, hartford, erie. by the time we get to thursday and friday, we get back to the 50s in cincinnati. we see more seasonable conditions settling in and into the 50s in richmond, new york. those temperatures are what we should be seeing for this time of year. we have not made it to the first day of winter just yet. it is right around the corner, though. and it looks like it if you live downwind of those lakes today. >> i was looking at the minneapolis forecast there, 11 degrees. my sister lives there. makes 30s in new york balmy. >> yeah, it does. >> okay. thank you, angie. up next here on "ana cabrera >> no, i haven't, from the 7th of october, at 8:00, when he sent -- message was sent from his phone to my phone saying that he was in a bomb shelter and he's fine. those moments when he sent, he didn't know there were hamas just around the corner. they thought with his friends that they were just staying away from the missiles, the rockets that were falling down at that point then. at that moment. so i haven't. >> it must be heart wrenching just waiting and not knowing. what has been going through your mind now as we have seen dozens of hostages released in the past few days? >> first, i'm very happy for the families that their loved ones are coming back. and it is wonderful and so important. and i'm so grateful for that. but, you know, sadly my son hasn't -- is not in this -- he's not a child, because he's 22 years old, and he is not a female, so, i don't know when he's going to get out. i don't know how it is going to be. we were trying everything we can from here, you know, trying to talk to whoever we can, both governments. he is also a serbian citizen, he has a dual citizenship. and both governments are doing everything they can, but it is beyond me. i cannot control what is going on with that. i control different things, like the beautiful things we're doing for him to make sure that he is known, that music in some way may be allergy energy-wise and get to him and, yeah, and we're doing everything for that. hoping that, you know. >> we hope. we hope. we're there with you and, you know, giving up all that energy into the unknown in the hopes that -- >> yeah, and -- and the most important thing is knowing that they are not forgotten. you said a number, 170 something, i stopped counting. they are not a number. it is a person behind this. it is like he's got a whole life, it is like -- it is a life, it is a story. it is not just a number. it is very important for us to -- for you and everybody to know that, that we want them back home and another important thing is, you know, terrorism is everywhere. it is not just in israel. it is in all over the world. and now it happened to israel, but it could happen everywhere. and we need to be together, united, as, you know, everybody to make sure that this doesn't continue. and our loved ones won't have to go through what we are going through. it has been 53 days today that i haven't seen my son. i haven't talked to him. i don't know where he is. i don't know what is with him. if he's fine. if he's, you know, healthy, and it is, you know, i have to -- as a mother, it is heart breaking for me to be in this situation. i don't think any mother should be there. should be in my situation. >> your son just is clearly a very talented musician. we played that clip with him playing the piano and it was just magical. i know your family recorded a song for him, i want to play some of that. >> sure. ♪♪ ♪♪ >> tell us more about why your family decided to record this song. >> well, the songwriter, that is sitting over there also, is a wonderful person and my son got in touch with him and this song that he wrote is so wonderful and he talks about bringing back the returns, come back to us. and so they did this new addition to this song. and at the end of it, it is usually come back to me. and now it is to come back to us, or you should come back to us. and this is such a beautiful song, but everybody in israel and whoever hears it, it is so, you know, touching and talks exactly about what we're going through. wanting them to come back home. you know, in hebrew there is a word that says -- which means the ones that come back to us. and i think of him that way, like in my mindset, i'm thinking of him coming back, not being a hostage. i know he's a hostage. but when i think about it, i say say it, because in my mindset it mean he's going to come back. and it goes from being a victim of him being a hostage for me seeing him as a fighter, for me as a mom, i'm fighting for him, and knowing that he will come back. so i am not a victim in this situation. i look forward and i see things right ahead and i'm doing everything i can that i can control, which is the music, which is my mindset, my thoughts, and that will bring me -- i believe that will help me in our family, bring him back home. >> yes. >> with, you know, what we're doing with you, in the news, talking about him. >> idit ohel, you are one strong woman. thank you for taking the time, sending you comfort and strength, our thoughts are with you and your whole family. >> thank you. thank you so much. up next on "ana cabrera reports," new details on the vermont shooting of three students of palestinian descent with one of the victims potentially never walking again. it will change my son's life -- >> forever. >> forever. there is no reason that he should have been targeted in this way, because it was a targeted crime, without a doubt. a targeted crime, without a doubt. g this kitchen.
