israel-hamas war. this morning, the jewish sabbath also known as chabot, in hebrew. >> it is a day meant for us, but there is no rest. today marks one week since the brutal surprise attack and massacre in israel, led by the terrorist group, hamas. the death toll is still rising. according to the israeli defense forces, at least 1300 people were killed, and 3300 wounded in israel, the palestinian ministry of health reports more than 2215 have been killed in gaza, and 8714 wounded. >> now, at any moment, the israeli military could be beginning e ground invasion in northern gaza. as palestinians scramble to evacuate after receiving just 24 hours notice. they israel's defense forces also referred to as the idf, will allow movement on to gaza streets for residents to head south, until 9 am eastern. we're going to begin our live rich coverage with nbc news correspondent kelly, who is reporting on the ground in jerusalem. kelly, good to see you this morning. it's been about 24 hours since israel ordered 1 million people in northern gaza to evacuate. what are you hearing about the israel unexpected ground offensive? >> yes, 24 hours came and went and there has been no ground offensive as of yet. the israeli defense forces spokesperson this morning saying the plans are in the works. all indications are that it will happen. even though it hasn't officially been ordered by the politicians here in jerusalem. there have been some small and contained raids by the idf into gaza territory. we heard about some of these late last night. we heard about some of the units going into recover evidence and other possible clues as to where the hostages may be. that according to the idf. the idf also saying the targeting of hamas leaders and operations are continued through the night. they claim to have killed two senior hamas leaders and strikes overnight. but the timing again of major ground offensive is the big question. they have said that they are allowing civilians now to leave through those two corridors. people are still trying to flee gaza this morning and it is not a comfortable situation for the facilities. trying to make their ways out. there are a lot of questions involved whether we'll mayberry to make it all the way safely. the idf has said those two quarters are open for another couple of hours now. there were questions about what happens once they make it south of this line. where do they get food, medicine, water, shelter. the united nations says it is incredibly thankful to care for this number of people moving south in the short amount of time. particularly when there are so many difficulties and getting humanitarian aid into the gaza strip. remember that gaza strip essentially close to any outside shipments of aid or anything else. the border crossing in the north with israel has been closed since saturday. the border closing to the south which leads to egypt has also been closed. egypt says that was because it was damaged in an israeli airstrike on the palestinian side. this morning the palestinians that there are shipments made and ready to go on the egyptian side. once that border is opened up. you are also once again saying and calling for an end to this deadline of getting to civilian saying it is impossible to move that many people that quickly. >> quickly how are people in israel react into this anticipated escalation in gaza. >> look, in a lot of places there is still warning sirens consistently the sirens or something this morning to border cities in the south. they sounded in tel aviv as well. people are still looking for chelsea and israel. even as the targeted strikes continue in gaza. hopefully to the south and gaza. so people very much are in sort of preservation mode. and they are also says no matter who you talk to. everyone essentially tells us the same thing. the israeli military is doing what needs to be done. you don't get a sense of any sort of resistance to this movement. to this potential ground operation coming up. keeping in mind that 360,000 reservists have been called up. that's a huge proportion of this population. now ready for war. >> my thanks to you kelly please stay safe. >> nbc news white house correspondent, allie raffa joins us now. ali, white house officials spoke with u.n. officials on the humanitarian situation in gaza. what did they say? >> jonathan we know that national security adviser jake sullivan spoke with u.n. officials yesterday about how to get humanitarian aid among other things into gaza to help with this already reeling region against food medicine water. and the images so collating. the photos that have been circulating. hospitals really after biting at capacity already. they spoke about efforts with the leaders of egypt, israel, and other arab nations to create these potentials safe films for innocent civilians to be able to move to. as being a roughly 1 million palestinian that has been displaced after that evacuation order from an israeli defense force. stephanie of state anthony blinken said what these efforts. during the trip to the middle east. he was specifically in qatar yesterday. take a bit of a listen to what he had to say about that. >> when it comes to providing for civilians in gaza. both ensuring that they can be out of harm's way and that they have access to the support they made. the humanitarian assistance, the food, the medicine, the water. our focus now is in helping to create safe zones. and we are doing that with the leading international organizations. we are you doing that engage with israel. and we are working with others to that. and so that is where our focuses. >> now we now between 500 and 600 palestinian americans are currently in gaza. and u.s. officials say if they want to leave they should be able to do so. and rebuild those efforts. though they're still being worked out guys. >> ali are there any updates in what the united states is doing about americans held hostage by hamas militants in gaza. >> president biden asked about this yesterday. he said that indeed these ongoing efforts are being kept under wraps. perhaps i'm surprising but we know that he spoke virtually for more than an hour with the families of those 14 americans who are still unaccounted for. who are believed to be among the roughly 150 people we believe are being held hostage by hamas. and the president said it was very important for him to personally speak with these families. the white house giving us some details about what the president talked about with them. he will say directly to these families that they were in his prayers. several of the family member shared personal stories about their loved ones. and the answer the call with the questions about the ongoing, very challenging recovery efforts. now that it's important to note also that these hostage recovery efforts are top of mind. and for administration efforts who are in these region. one of them being secretary of state anthony blinken. part of the reason he went to qatar and is in the middle east visiting with these leaders is to take advantage during these open lines of communication. these channels that other foreign entities have with hamas to help facilitate the recovery efforts job within. >> how is the united states addressing that concern for limited availability of commercial flights out of the area? >> yeah that is been a challenge. really until a week ago when it all started commercial transportation coming to a halt very limited in the capacity to get people out. they know that the state department has he is one of the most unsuccessful charter so far to be able to take services and immediate family members out. that increase yesterday. and the state department is ensuring that most flights will follow as long as there is a demand for u.s. citizens. they will say that options by sea are also being explored as well. but the big question that still remains is how palestinian americans will be able to if they would like to get out of gaza. we know that they are efforts to do so but obviously time is of the essence. >> nbc news white house correspondent allie raffa. thank you. >> still to come i was said order just returned from israel. her take on the war in the u.s. involvement. next. and we have more on the msnbc's special coverage. special coverage and you can help take control of your symptoms - with vraylar. some medicines only treat the lows or highs. vraylar treats depressive, acute manic, and mixed episodes of bipolar 1 in adults. proven, full-spectrum relief for all bipolar 1 symptoms. and in vraylar clinical studies, most saw no substantial impact on weight. elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. call your doctor about unusual changes in behavior or suicidal thoughts. antidepressants can increase these in children and young adults. report fever, stiff muscles or confusion which may mean a life-threatening reaction, or uncontrollable muscle movements which may be permanent. high blood sugar, which can lead to coma or death, weight gain and high cholesterol may occur. movement dysfunction and restlessness are common side effects. sleepiness and stomach issues are also common. side effects may not appear for several weeks. ask about vraylar and learn how abbvie could help you save. it's easy to get lost in investment research. introducing j.p. morgan personal advisors. hey david. connect with an advisor to create your personalized plan. let's find the right investments for your goals okay, great. j.p. morgan wealth management. the ball is out and there's a pile-up. -let's go! -get in the pile! ugh, i'll deal with this tomorrow. you won't. it's ripe in here. my eyes are watering. i'm a busy man. look how crusty this is. shameful. ugh, it's just too much. not with this. tide. tide can tackle any pile. that a tackle pun? >> yes thank you jonathan. it is with you. and it has been extremely draining. you're definitely encourage when the delegation initially went into the region. of course when you saw the devastating attacks in israel. i do think that it is in the best interest of all of the arab nations and israel in this area to focus on flushing out hamas. it is extremely important that we remember that hamas is the one that perpetrated these extraordinarily horrific attacks on the israeli people. so i do think it's important that it's the israelis have the opportunity to really decimate hamas. and hopefully the arab nations can also assist with a humanitarian crisis that the palestinian evacuation is causing. i think there is a lot yet more still to be seen and fortunately an extremely tragic week. and probably many more to come jonathan. >> senator. president biden has said no american boots on the ground. so how will the united states get to kidnap -- the kidnapped americans home? >> this is the quandary we are in. i know that we have different units that are specifically trained to seize hostages. i think that is important. in this administration should be focusing on this. i am leading a letter to the administration asking that they prioritize this. we know that those hostages, that they are being held in gaza. they will be in extreme danger as the israeli move in with the ground forces so i would leave the options open to this administration to work with the israelis and make sure that we are securing more hostages. we should also be making demands of hamas. that they unconditionally turnover those american hostages. we have 14 americans at the very least that we know are unaccounted for. the thought processes that we believe that it would be helped by hamas. so again very tense situation but this administration needs to work very clearly and succinctly with the israelis on securing our hostages. so i would not write anything off the table at this point. >> until there is of speaker of the house. congress can't pass any aid to israel. not to mention the looming threat of a government shutdown and 34 calendar days. how concerned are you that there might not be a speaker in time to effectively aid israel or ukraine for that matter? >> i am concerned jonathan. this is where i hope our friends across the rotunda are coming together and supporting a speaker. so that not only can the regular business of the united states done by passing appropriations bills but also that we can take a look now at the additional funding that is now necessary. as you pointed out not just for israel but also for ukraine. perhaps even taiwan. i think it's incredibly important for our own national security that we are looking at ways to put down these authoritarian regimes. hamas is less funded by iran. 93% of their funding comes directly from iran. and we need to make sure we can push back against that. so just encouraging again friends across the written dress to come together very said. and to disappoint a speaker that can continue. >> senator ernst, this week donald trump criticize netanyahu and praised hezbollah as quote. very smart. what do you make of that assessment by the former president? >> i think this is not the type to be critiquing the. leaders in this other regions. i think it's incredibly important that we stand together shortly to shoulder with israel. so that they know and understand they have powerful support which is exactly why i would have a bipartisan delegation into israel after the attacks. to meet with the leaders in israel's. to show that across the spectrum of political beliefs. we support israel. and we will support their leaders. so now is not the time for rhetoric. now is the time to show our full support to israel. >> one more question for you senator. even before all of this happened. there is waning public support for american assistance to the efforts in ukraine against russia's invasion. now we're looking at america supporting israel and rightly so. but what do you say to the american public who look at all of this and say why should we be there? explain to the american people why it is important for the united states to stand by israel? >> it is incredibly important to our own national security that we are pushing back against the terrorist factions. make no doubt about it. to make no bones about it. that these tariffs are widely funded by iran. and this is the leadership in iran that has death to america and death to israel. so it's not just israel that will be under file but it is the continuance spread of the groups around the globe. and all of their affiliates. iran-backed states terror proxy organizations and they do the bidding of the leadership in iran. so again incredibly important that pushes against the authoritarian regimes. not just first ability around the globe. but itmeri's best interest to provide stability for our own people so that we can have prosperity. not just here in the united states but around the globe. >> senator one more question for you real quick. when the idf issued the evacuation order for northern gaza. hamas which has been in control of gaza since 2007, told residents to stay. your reaction to that? >> nobody should be surprised by this jonathan. this is hamas using the palestinian people as human shields. they know that it will make retrieving any hostages much more difficult. they know the civilian casualties. the idea that it forces go in and continue to strike and use their ground forces. so again they are using these probably innocent palestinians as cannon fodder for the idea. they have known that this will create an uproar on the international stage. so again incredibly important to remember how moss is a terrorist organization. they are the likeness of i.s.i.s.. so we should cut them no slack. but we would encourage the people of palestine to evacuate as quickly as possible. >> senator jurnee ernst of iowa. thank you very much for trying to be on the program. >> thank you jonathan. >> coming up next. the role the united states will play in resolving the conflict between israel and hamas. and the impact the ground offensive in gaza will have in shaping the american middle east policy in years ahead. don't go anywhere. msnbc's special coverage of the israel hamas war continues. >> hamas war continues >> conquer 2000-word essays. conquer a 6 course menu. rule over what you write with the smooth writing, longest lasting gel ink pen in america. do you g2? >> so gazans are still trying to make their way south to try to take advantage of that lull. that's passage allowed via to routes from the north of gaza into the southern part of the strip. israeli defense forces say that those two roots will be clear for civilians until that 9 am eastern time deadline. so a couple of more hours now. and there is a lot of desperation and fear among gazans in the north trying to move south. people are packing up all of their belongings. they're pulling and strapping anything they can to the roofs of their car. traveling as far away from kansas city and the northern part as they can. but look, it's a really difficult situation in gaza because both voters are closed. the border in the north into israel has been closed since the attacks began a week ago. and the border in the south is also close to the border. the crossing that goes into egypt after being damaged in an israeli airstrike according to the egyptians. so it's a really difficult situation for the people inside of gaza. it's a tough war for aid workers as well who have a limited amount of supplies. humanitarian supplies are not getting in. but there is movement of people. at the same time overnight, israel continued to strike positions inside of gaza. targeting the strikes inside of gaza. the idf said. they said that they had managed to killed two senior hamas military leaders in those strikes. and they're also carrying out ground operations. they say that they've-limited ground operations just across the fence. just across the border to target hamas operations and also to collect evidence to gather more information about those hostages that have been taken. we haven't gotten any more detailed information from the idf on exactly what they have been able to collect. only that those operations are not part of a bigger ground offensive and in other words they're saying what you're seeing is not the start of the ground war. these are limited in scope. jonathan? katie? >> nbc news foreign correspondent kelly thank you. >> joining us now is the spokesperson for the united nation to the united nations under the obama administration. thank you for joining us this early morning. in this meeting as you know, giving the limited ground invasion in gaza. i have to ask you what would the impact of that be on the escalation in the region? i specifically want to ask you about lebanon because there has been conflict already in terms of skirmishes on the northern border of israel as of lebanon and we do know that hezbollah has a very strong around backed presidents up there. >> right. lebanon is the real wildcard here. if i was the u.s. president i would put violence coming from lebanon towards israel as moderately likely. and that's because hezbollah is a terrorist organization backed by iran. it could look optimistic. but in israel especially when the forces are headed south. the reason for that is since the end of the israeli hezbollah war. the last one that happened in 2006. we know, i worked in the u.s. government, hezbollah was under my portfolio. we had terrorist financing. hezbollah has been preparing for another showdown. and so, while it's not very clear whether there were prepare something along with some of. very clearly it seems that they knew about what was coming and it's their advantage to open this other side. it's not in israel's advantage over this other side. i don't think israel wants to. you can see from the attacks that have come from as bala and israel strikes in response that they have better been measured in effort. they don't seem to want an all-out wars and that's because they need to dedicate resources to all one location. and if you're talking about hezbollah, if you're targeting, they're not gonna be long. you've got not just iran, but syria as well behind them. and the problems that syria could cause. the problems that syrian refugees are already causing in lebanon in the past few days. where they're also taking advantage of this instability. and general lawlessness. and so it's a wild card that continues to be very, very potent. >> the united nations says that the evacuation order that is been issued by israel for a densely populated area like gaza. it's impossible. we've seen the ramifications that have been happening and gaza as a result of the bombings from israel. innocent -- have been put up. in the meanwhile, idf has said we are gonna continue continued evacuations from a specific corridor. what does that signal to you about how they're preparing for a potential ground invasion? >> sure so it definitely gives us insight into their plans to really almost leveled the area that they are going into. and the reason that they are doing that. they have four goals here. the first is to defend themselves in general. let's not forget that hamas continues to lob rockets into israel that are going into israel. number two, they need to disable hamas's ability to launch those rockets. to attack israel in general. number three, they need to get the hospitals release the number four, they need to send a message that this type of violence, this type of terrorist attack will never be allowed again. that israel will never tolerate it. i should note that for the five rounds of violence that you have had. between gaza and israel, israel has always responded in a very brutal response. it is part of the israeli playbook when responding to terrorist attacks. since israel's inception which is not surprising. hamas knows that. hamas deliberately puts mobile launchers in residential areas. they deliberately asked civilians to stay put but the one thing here that i find very interesting that is different than the past rounds of violence. obviously how it started. but also is the fact, number, one that israel is asking civilians to get out of the way. even if it's a very short window by the way. they're asking them to get out of the way because they do not seem to want that criticism. and this is how they are approaching this war. and we can debate the merits of that but that's what they're trying to say. and the second one i would highlight is the fact that the u.s. is pressing israel and egypt to open a humanitarian corridor. why? because the u.s. is not going to push back on israel in this moment. they are trying to say we are not going to push back on it, but we want to see civilian saved. so please open the humanitarian corridor. >> let's be clear, hamas has actually been ordering its residents to stay in gaza despite what israel has told them to do. you know, as the world is anticipating israel's potential lengthy campaign in gaza, what role do you expect the united nations to play as arbiters of international humanitarian law? we know that the u.n. has made overtures, and has said please we need to have a revisiting of how this is being that. not only by israel but obviously the united nations condemning what hamas has done. >> sir, i mean i'm not a big believer that the u.n. is going to have a lot of influence in making things different for war around the world in general. that was not my view 20 years ago. that is certainly my view. now i can only include ukraine and russia. to just see the recklessness of the went on full display. they u.n. when i was working in the u.s. government. and like i said when hamas was in my portfolio. the u.n. was not helpful in undermining hamas. it didn't even feel it as a terrorist organization. it was a very difficult effort on our part to prove that they were a terrorist organization. and to get the europeans with us and so on and so forth. i don't expect them to be helpful in that regard. i do expect them to be helpful. if the humanitarian corridor is opened. that means it would be very different and making the situation again. not to say that this is the best strategy. you don't know how israel will get out of this at the end. they could occupy gaza, they will build gaza, these are questions that are fundamental to israeli security. that said if there is a humanitarian corridor and all of these folks. causes civilians go through and lindsey they go to egypt for example. and i could get you to seriously consider that. the u.n. is critical in setting up the tanks, shelter, food, water. having everything ready and trying to provide something until they can return home. >> my thanks to you for joining us this morning. i appreciate the insight. >> thanks. >> up next. unraveling the roots of hamas. we will go inside the terrorist groups rise to power. and how it is putting the lives of ordinary palestinian civilians in danger. >> >> the company goes to the first born audrey. the model train set is entrusted to todd. mr. marbles will receive recurring deliveries for all of his needs in perpetuity, thanks to autoship from chewy. i always loved that old man. what's it say about the summer house? >> thank you. well it formed in the late 80s. out of frustration of the lack of movement that say. israeli palestinian settlement. it's an islamist organization. it's an affiliate or a shoot if you will of the muslim brotherhood organization which started in egypt in the 19 twenties and has affiliates all over the region. so it's an islamic's story and group to advantage of obviously the weaknesses of yellow and its successors who were viewed as corrupt and very much willing to sell out. the palestinian people in the interest of the settlement with israel. and hamas there has been times where the regions thought and u.s. officials thought that they could be moderated. -- saudi arabia in the other states have worked on trying to moderate hamas to get it to change its charter to except a negotiation settlements with israel. there were indications at times that hamas might be willing to do that. but i think that this attack shows that really hamas is never going to accept the state of israel. and never going to accept negotiations with israel. >> is it that part or you tell me. is it part of the chart of the hamas charter that israel be destroyed? the destruction of israel's part of the charter. >> it is however a few years ago there was some indications that they may have changed some of the language and as i was saying this. arab states were trying to coax how months into a more mainstream position when they did to make some amendments that suggested they might be willing at some point to have a negotiated settlement but i think and all bets are off. >> hamas took over gaza in 2007. what has that meant for the governance of gaza? are they even governing gaza? >> while they do mainly the ministries and the security and border controls, ports of entry, they do exercise control. the police security apparatus reports to hamas. yes sir. but obviously at the end of this operation they predict will that be in control of gaza? and it will. >> do you have any insight into how hamas was able to pull off such an elaborate and sophisticated and deadly surprise attack on israel? >> that's a greater known question. i think in my view they have very very intense study of the forward positions of israel. along the gaza strip and they have a lot of precise intelligence. that perhaps the border was well guarded and less defended that had been assumed. and they exploited the vulnerabilities. and it is perhaps because the idea was to go to maybe towards hezbollah in the north. and the bank where there's been unrest obviously. so they have good intelligence that the border was not that well guarded. >> in the 30 seconds we have left. mr. how why did hamas tell dozens to remain in place after the atf issued its evacuation order yesterday. what purpose with that serve? >> well they seek to use civilians as human shields. and you know israel has been in this by giving this window. it's a small window but getting evacuations to civilians and not let hamas play that card of using civilians as a way of saying you can attack us because too many civilians would be killed. and i don't think israel will be deterred. there are unfortunately going to be and the united states agrees needs to do this and take hamas out of power in gaza. >> scotsman of the soup on center. thank you very much for being here this morning. >> when our special coverage of the israel work continues. the israeli service put their lives on hold and do anything for the invasion. adam joins us live onset on how his teammates are answering that call to serve their war torn country. torn country there are some things that go better... together. burger and fries... soup and salad. thank you! like your workplace benefits and retirement savings. with voya, considering all your financial choices together... can help you make smarter decisions. for a more confident financial future. hey, a tandem bicycle. you can't do that by yourself. voya. well planned. well invested. well protected. with 30 grams of protein. those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks. -ahh, -here, i'll take that. woo hoo! ensure max protein 30 grams protein, one gram sugar, 25 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients for immune health. israel-hamas war. this morning, the jewish sabbath also known as chabot, in hebrew. >> it is a day meant for us, but there is no rest. today marks one week since the brutal surprise attack and massacre in israel, led by the terrorist group, hamas. the death toll is still rising. according to the israeli defense forces, at least 1300 people were killed, and 3300 wounded in israel, the palestinian ministry of health reports more than 2215 have been killed in gaza, and 8714 wounded. >> now, at any moment, the israeli military could be beginning e ground invasion in northern gaza. as palestinians scramble to evacuate after receiving just 24 hours notice. they israel's defense forces also referred to as the idf, will allow movement on to gaza streets for residents to head south, until 9 am eastern. we're going to begin our live rich coverage with nbc news correspondent kelly, who is reporting on the ground in jerusalem. kelly, good to see you this morning. it's been about 24 hours since israel ordered 1 million people in northern gaza to evacuate. what are you hearing about the israel unexpected ground offensive? >> yes, 24 hours came and went and there has been no ground offensive as of yet. the israeli defense forces spokesperson this morning saying the plans are in the works. all indications are that it will happen. even though it hasn't officially been ordered by the politicians here in jerusalem. there have been some small and contained raids by the idf into gaza territory. we heard about some of these late last night. we heard about some of the units going into recover evidence and other possible clues as to where the hostages may be. that according to the idf. the idf also saying the targeting of hamas leaders and operations are continued through the night. they claim to have killed two senior hamas leaders and strikes overnight. but the timing again of major ground offensive is the big question. they have said that they are allowing civilians now to leave through those two corridors. people are still trying to flee gaza this morning and it is not a comfortable situation for the facilities. trying to make their ways out. there are a lot of questions involved whether we'll mayberry to make it all the way safely. the idf has said those two quarters are open for another couple of hours now. there were questions about what happens once they make it south of this line. where do they get food, medicine, water, shelter. the united nations says it is incredibly thankful to care for this number of people moving south in the short amount of time. particularly when there are so many difficulties and getting humanitarian aid into the gaza strip. remember that gaza strip essentially close to any outside shipments of aid or anything else. the border crossing in the north with israel has been closed since saturday. the border closing to the south which leads to egypt has also been closed. egypt says that was because it was damaged in an israeli airstrike on the palestinian side. this morning the palestinians that there are shipments made and ready to go on the egyptian side. once that border is opened up. you are also once again saying and calling for an end to this deadline of getting to civilian saying it is impossible to move that many people that quickly. >> quickly how are people in israel react into this anticipated escalation in gaza. >> look, in a lot of places there is still warning sirens consistently the sirens or something this morning to border cities in the south. they sounded in tel aviv as well. people are still looking for chelsea and israel. even as the targeted strikes continue in gaza. hopefully to the south and gaza. so people very much are in sort of preservation mode. and they are also says no matter who you talk to. everyone essentially tells us the same thing. the israeli military is doing what needs to be done. you don't get a sense of any sort of resistance to this movement. to this potential ground operation coming up. keeping in mind that 360,000 reservists have been called up. that's a huge proportion of this population. now ready for war. >> my thanks to you kelly please stay safe. >> nbc news white house correspondent, allie raffa joins us now. ali, white house officials spoke with u.n. officials on the humanitarian situation in gaza. what did they say? >> jonathan we know that national security adviser jake sullivan spoke with u.n. officials yesterday about how to get humanitarian aid among other things into gaza to help with this already reeling region against food medicine water. and the images so collating. the photos that have been circulating. hospitals really after biting at capacity already. they spoke about efforts with the leaders of egypt, israel, and other arab nations to create these potentials safe films for innocent civilians to be able to move to. as being a roughly 1 million palestinian that has been displaced after that evacuation order from an israeli defense force. stephanie of state anthony blinken said what these efforts. during the trip to the middle east. he was specifically in qatar yesterday. take a bit of a listen to what he had to say about that. >> when it comes to providing for civilians in gaza. both ensuring that they can be out of harm's way and that they have access to the support they made. the humanitarian assistance, the food, the medicine, the water. our focus now is in helping to create safe zones. and we are doing that with the leading international organizations. we are you doing that engage with israel. and we are working with others to that. and so that is where our focuses. >> now we now between 500 and 600 palestinian americans are currently in gaza. and u.s. officials say if they want to leave they should be able to do so. and rebuild those efforts. though they're still being worked out guys. >> ali are there any updates in what the united states is doing about americans held hostage by hamas militants in gaza. >> president biden asked about this yesterday. he said that indeed these ongoing efforts are being kept under wraps. perhaps i'm surprising but we know that he spoke virtually for more than an hour with the families of those 14 americans who are still unaccounted for. who are believed to be among the roughly 150 people we believe are being held hostage by hamas. and the president said it was very important for him to personally speak with these families. the white house giving us some details about what the president talked about with them. he will say directly to these families that they were in his prayers. several of the family member shared personal stories about their loved ones. and the answer the call with the questions about the ongoing, very challenging recovery efforts. now that it's important to note also that these hostage recovery efforts are top of mind. and for administration efforts who are in these region. one of them being secretary of state anthony blinken. part of the reason he went to qatar and is in the middle east visiting with these leaders is to take advantage during these open lines of communication. these channels that other foreign entities have with hamas to help facilitate the recovery efforts job within. >> how is the united states addressing that concern for limited availability of commercial flights out of the area? >> yeah that is been a challenge. really until a week ago when it all started commercial transportation coming to a halt very limited in the capacity to get people out. they know that the state department has he is one of the most unsuccessful charter so far to be able to take services and immediate family members out. that increase yesterday. and the state department is ensuring that most flights will follow as long as there is a demand for u.s. citizens. they will say that options by sea are also being explored as well. but the big question that still remains is how palestinian americans will be able to if they would like to get out of gaza. we know that they are efforts to do so but obviously time is of the essence. >> nbc news white house correspondent allie raffa. thank you. >> still to come i was said order just returned from israel. her take on the war in the u.s. involvement. next. and we have more on the msnbc's special coverage. special coverage and you can help take control of your symptoms - with vraylar. some medicines only treat the lows or highs. vraylar treats depressive, acute manic, and mixed episodes of bipolar 1 in adults. proven, full-spectrum relief for all bipolar 1 symptoms. and in vraylar clinical studies, most saw no substantial impact on weight. elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. call your doctor about unusual changes in behavior or suicidal thoughts. antidepressants can increase these in children and young adults. report fever, stiff muscles or confusion which may mean a life-threatening reaction, or uncontrollable muscle movements which may be permanent. high blood sugar, which can lead to coma or death, weight gain and high cholesterol may occur. movement dysfunction and restlessness are common side effects. sleepiness and stomach issues are also common. side effects may not appear for several weeks. ask about vraylar and learn how abbvie could help you save. it's easy to get lost in investment research. introducing j.p. morgan personal advisors. hey david. connect with an advisor to create your personalized plan. let's find the right investments for your goals okay, great. j.p. morgan wealth management. the ball is out and there's a pile-up. -let's go! -get in the pile! ugh, i'll deal with this tomorrow. you won't. it's ripe in here. my eyes are watering. i'm a busy man. look how crusty this is. shameful. ugh, it's just too much. not with this. tide. tide can tackle any pile. that a tackle pun? great in my book! who are you? no power? no problem. introducing storm-ready wifi. now you can stay reliably connected through power outages with unlimited cellular data and up to 4 hours of battery back-up to keep you online. only from xfinity. >> we are back bell with home of the xfinity 10g network. continuing coverage of the israel-hamas war. with a name deadline fast approaching. palestinian civilians have just three hours to evacuate the northern part of the gaza strip. before the israeli military moves into flush out hamas in the wake of last weekend's attack that is killed more than 1300 in israel. join me now is senator joni harris of iowa. chair of the republican policy committee in a member of the armed services committee. senator ernst, thank you very much for being on the show so early this morning. you've just returned from the region when you met with leaders and discussed the escalation opportunities. is that even possible right now? >> yes thank you jonathan. it is with you. and it has been extremely draining. you're definitely encourage when the delegation initially went into the region. of course when you saw the devastating attacks in israel. i do think that it is in the best interest of all of the arab nations and israel in this area to focus on flushing out hamas. it is extremely important that we remember that hamas is the one that perpetrated these extraordinarily horrific attacks on the israeli people. so i do think it's important that it's the israelis have the opportunity to really decimate hamas. and hopefully the arab nations can also assist with a humanitarian crisis that the palestinian evacuation is causing. i think there is a lot yet more still to be seen and fortunately an extremely tragic week. and probably many more to come jonathan. >> senator. president biden has said no american boots on the ground. so how will the united states get to kidnap -- the kidnapped americans home? >> this is the quandary we are in. i know that we have different units that are specifically trained to seize hostages. i think that is important. in this administration should be focusing on this. i am leading a letter to the administration asking that they prioritize this. we know that those hostages, that they are being held in gaza. they will be in extreme danger as the israeli move in with the ground forces so i would leave the options open to this administration to work with the israelis and make sure that we are securing more hostages. we should also be making demands of hamas. that they unconditionally turnover those american hostages. we have 14 americans at the very least that we know are unaccounted for. the thought processes that we believe that it would be helped by hamas. so again very tense situation but this administration needs to work very clearly and succinctly with the israelis on securing our hostages. so i would not write anything off the table at this point. >> until there is of speaker of the house. congress can't pass any aid to israel. not to mention the looming threat of a government shutdown and 34 calendar days. how concerned are you that there might not be a speaker in time to effectively aid israel or ukraine for that matter? >> i am concerned jonathan. this is where i hope our friends across the rotunda are coming together and supporting a speaker. so that not only can the regular business of the united states done by passing appropriations bills but also that we can take a look now at the additional funding that is now necessary. as you pointed out not just for israel but also for ukraine. perhaps even taiwan. i think it's incredibly important for our own national security that we are looking at ways to put down these authoritarian regimes. hamas is less funded by iran. 93% of their funding comes directly from iran. and we need to make sure we can push back against that. so just encouraging again friends across the written dress to come together very said. and to disappoint a speaker that can continue. >> senator ernst, this week donald trump criticize netanyahu and praised hezbollah as quote. very smart. what do you make of that assessment by the former president? >> so gazans are still trying to make their way south to try to take advantage of that lull. that's passage allowed via to routes from the north of gaza into the southern part of the strip. israeli defense forces say that those two roots will be clear for civilians until that 9 am eastern time deadline. so a couple of more hours now. and there is a lot of desperation and fear among gazans in the north trying to move south. people are packing up all of their belongings. they're pulling and strapping anything they can to the roofs of their car. traveling as far away from kansas city and the northern part as they can. but look, it's a really difficult situation in gaza because both voters are closed. the border in the north into israel has been closed since the attacks began a week ago. and the border in the south is also close to the border. the crossing that goes into egypt after being damaged in an israeli airstrike according to the egyptians. so it's a really difficult situation for the people inside of gaza. it's a tough war for aid workers as well who have a limited amount of supplies. humanitarian supplies are not getting in. but there is movement of people. at the same time overnight, israel continued to strike positions inside of gaza. targeting the strikes inside of gaza. the idf said. they said that they had managed to killed two senior hamas military leaders in those strikes. and they're also carrying out ground operations. they say that they've-limited ground operations just across the fence. just across the border to target hamas operations and also to collect evidence to gather more information about those hostages that have been taken. we haven't gotten any more detailed information from the idf on exactly what they have been able to collect. only that those operations are not part of a bigger ground offensive and in other words they're saying what you're seeing is not the start of the ground war. these are limited in scope. jonathan? katie? >> nbc news foreign correspondent kelly thank you. >> joining us now is the spokesperson for the united nation to the united nations under the obama administration. thank you for joining us this early morning. in this meeting as you know, giving the limited ground invasion in gaza. i have to ask you what would the impact of that be on the escalation in the region? i specifically want to ask you about lebanon because there has been conflict already in terms of skirmishes on the northern border of israel as of lebanon and we do know that hezbollah has a very strong around backed presidents up there. >> right. lebanon is the real wildcard here. if i was the u.s. president i would put violence coming from lebanon towards israel as moderately likely. and that's because hezbollah is a terrorist organization backed by iran. it could look optimistic. but in israel especially when the forces are headed south. the reason for that is since the end of the israeli hezbollah war. the last one that happened in 2006. we know, i worked in the u.s. government, hezbollah was under my portfolio. we had terrorist financing. hezbollah has been preparing for another showdown. and so, while it's not very clear whether there were prepare something along with some of. very clearly it seems that they knew about what was coming and it's their advantage to open this other side. it's not in israel's advantage over this other side. i don't think israel wants to. you can see from the attacks that have come from as bala and israel strikes in response that they have better been measured in effort. they don't seem to want an all-out wars and that's because they need to dedicate resources to all one location. and if you're talking about hezbollah, if you're targeting, they're not gonna be long. you've got not just iran, but syria as well behind them. and the problems that syria could cause. the problems that syrian refugees are already causing in lebanon in the past few days. where they're also taking advantage of this instability. and general lawlessness. and so it's a wild card that continues to be very, very potent. >> the united nations says that the evacuation order that is been issued by israel for a densely populated area like gaza. it's impossible. we've seen the ramifications that have been happening and gaza as a result of the bombings from israel. innocent -- have been put up. in the meanwhile, idf has said we are gonna continue continued evacuations from a specific corridor. what does that signal to you about how they're preparing for a potential ground invasion? >> sure so it definitely gives us insight into their plans to really almost leveled the area that they are going into. and the reason that they are doing that. they have four goals here. the first is to defend themselves in general. let's not forget that hamas continues to lob rockets into israel that are going into israel. number two, they need to disable hamas's ability to launch those rockets. to attack israel in general. number three, they need to get the hospitals release the number four, they need to send a message that this type of violence, this type of terrorist attack will never be allowed again. that israel will never tolerate it. i should note that for the five rounds of violence that you have had. between gaza and israel, israel has always responded in a very brutal response. it is part of the israeli playbook when responding to terrorist attacks. since israel's inception which is not surprising. hamas knows that. hamas deliberately puts mobile launchers in residential areas. they deliberately asked civilians to stay put but the one thing here that i find very interesting that is different than the past rounds of violence. obviously how it started. but also is the fact, number, one that israel is asking civilians to get out of the way. even if it's a very short window by the way. they're asking them to get out of the way because they do not seem to want that criticism. and this is how they are approaching this war. and we can debate the merits of that but that's what they're trying to say. and the second one i would highlight is the fact that the u.s. is pressing israel and egypt to open a humanitarian corridor. why? because the u.s. is not going to push back on israel in this moment. they are trying to say we are not going to push back on it, but we want to see civilian saved. so please open the humanitarian corridor. >> let's be clear, hamas has actually been ordering its residents to stay in gaza despite what israel has told them to do. you know, as the world is anticipating israel's potential lengthy campaign in gaza, what role do you expect the united nations to play as arbiters of international humanitarian law? we know that the u.n. has made overtures, and has said please we need to have a revisiting of how this is being that. not only by israel but obviously the united nations condemning what hamas has done. >> sir, i mean i'm not a big believer that the u.n. is going to have a lot of influence in making things different for war around the world in general. that was not my view 20 years ago. that is certainly my view. now i can only include ukraine and russia. to just see the recklessness of the went on full display. they u.n. when i was working in the u.s. government. and like i said when hamas was in my portfolio. the u.n. was not helpful in undermining hamas. it didn't even feel it as a terrorist organization. it was a very difficult effort on our part to prove that they were a terrorist organization. and to get the europeans with us and so on and so forth. i don't expect them to be helpful in that regard. i do expect them to be helpful. if the humanitarian corridor is opened. that means it would be very different and making the situation again. not to say that this is the best strategy. you don't know how israel will get out of this at the end. they could occupy gaza, they will build gaza, these are questions that are fundamental to israeli security. that said if there is a humanitarian corridor and all of these folks. causes civilians go through and lindsey they go to egypt for example. and i could get you to seriously consider that. the u.n. is critical in setting up the tanks, shelter, food, water. having everything ready and trying to provide something until they can return home. >> my thanks to you for joining us this morning. i appreciate the insight. >> thanks. >> up next. unraveling the roots of hamas. we will go inside the terrorist groups rise to power. and how it is putting the lives of ordinary palestinian civilians in danger. >> >> the company goes to the first born audrey. the model train set is entrusted to todd. mr. marbles will receive recurring deliveries for all of his needs in perpetuity, thanks to autoship from chewy. i always loved that old man. what's it say about the summer house? and it will. >> do you have any insight into how hamas was able to pull off such an elaborate and sophisticated and deadly surprise attack on israel? >> that's a greater known question. i think in my view they have very very intense study of the forward positions of israel. along the gaza strip and they have a lot of precise intelligence. that perhaps the border was well guarded and less defended that had been assumed. and they exploited the vulnerabilities. and it is perhaps because the idea was to go to maybe towards hezbollah in the north. and the bank where there's been unrest obviously. so they have good intelligence that the border was not that well guarded. >> in the 30 seconds we have left. mr. how why did hamas tell dozens to remain in place after the atf issued its evacuation order yesterday. what purpose with that serve?
