tonight, my heart is heavy as i reflect upon what was meant to be a weekend of hope. now unhinged with a tragedy. thousands of us marched on washington yesterday for racial justice. the right to vote, the right to choose, the right to live free from gun violence. just hours later, the country's suffered yet another hate motivated shooting. this time, jacksonville, florida. police say the white gunman who shot and killed three black people before turning the gun on himself had swastikas drawn on his rifle. the to hack is a grim reminder of why we called the march a continuation, not a commemoration. no dream dr. martin luther king spoke of the 60 years ago on the national mall cannot co exist along the nightmare that unfolded yesterday afternoon in florida. joining me now, congresswoman ayanna pressley, democrat of massachusetts. congresswoman, thank you for being with us. i must begin tonight with your reaction to the races smashing in jacksonville. as we mentioned, it left three black people dead. police say the gunman was very active posting anti black in antisemitic sentiments and the massacre is now being investigated as a federal hate crime. president biden, who will be meeting with the eking family and civil rights leaders on tomorrow or on the 16th anniversary of the march on washington put out a statement this afternoon saying white supremacy has no place in america. for his part, florida governor ron desantis also said this afternoon targeting people by their race has no place in florida. he was quick to condemn the shooter as a coward and a scumbag. i would be remiss if i did not point out the rise of hateful attacks, such as the one in recent years, has coincided with government desantis and others trying to erase black history. trying to eliminate affirmative action and diversity programs from schools and workplaces. and also condemning black lawmakers, such as yourself, as anti-american. simply for holding your views differing from their own. your thoughts, congressman? >> first, reverend, i want to say, i appreciate the leadership and grateful for the thousands that came together yesterday in front to the racial injustice. to the hate, to the violence that persists. you are exactly right. this is about continuation and not commemoration. and i do want to express my condolences to the ladera family, the car family and the gallant family. certainly there has been an -- anti black rhetoric. it has resulted in anti black violence and loss of life and it's why we must continue to be vigilant and unrelenting in our efforts. call out those that are complacent or active participants in trafficking this hate it's a matter of life and death. >> we just spoke a little bit about the demonization of lawmakers of color. republican presidential candidate vivek ramaswamy campaigning and iowa on friday called you and author ibrahim kennedy, quote, modern grand wizards of the modern kkk, and of quote. since then, he has continually doubled down on those comments. saying that based on comments you and kennedy have made, the two of you are the anti -- anti-racist movement. frankly, it would make the grand lizards of the ku klux klan, quote, proud. what is your response? especially on a weekend when we are reminded of the deadly impact this kind of hateful rhetoric and have? this >> reverend al, the verbal assault lobbied against myself and kennedy is shameful. it's deeply offensive, it's dangerous. it is not that long ago that we were upstaged by images of white supremacist carrying tiki torches in charlottesville. it was not that long ago that a white supremacist mob sees the capitol. waving confederate flags and erecting nooses on the west lawn of the capital. and one of my childhood memories that is deeply embedded, my ancestors and family members have been brutalized and lynched and raped by the ku klux klan. i recall when my family member had moved into a predominantly white cul-de-sac in the 80s when i was a child. we had across burned in our lawn. so,, for me as a deeply shameful and offensive and dangerous as his words are, he is not occupying any real estate in my mind. i remain squarely focused on the arc of undoing the centuries of harm that has precisely been done to black americans. charting a path of two restored of justice and racial justice forward. >> congresswoman, as you know, a central theme on the march is pushing the country to make good on the promises it made to lack americans going back to president abraham lincoln. continuing today. ahead of the, march you called on five of our u.s. banks to provide updates on some 32 billion dollars in racial equity pledges. they made after george floyd's murder. the surge of anti racist sentiment that followed. jp morgan chase, bank of america, u.s., bank wells fargo have until october 23rd to provide you with a comprehensive financial audit report. detailing where those commitments currently stand. what response have you gotten thus far from the financial community? >> reverend al, we haven't received any response from the banks as of yet. in our letter, we called for a comprehensive financial audits accounting for where these tens of billions of dollars have gone. what the impact it has been. any updates on any pledges that were made by october 23rd. as you said, this moment is about continuation. so, this is a continuation of the work that i've been doing since i was elected to congress on the financial services committee. that is the oversight of our banking industry. reverend,. all you know all too well that our banks, the financial industry, have been coconspirators. accomplices in the work of racial injustice, whether you're talking about redlining, denying access to credit loans for small businesses for entrepreneurs and for harm buyers. the practice of redlining. they have been accomplices. the work of racial injustice in creating a racial wealth gap. so, they must be now in this moment intentional in their partnership. i'm simply looking for accountability for the promises that were made. now that the hashtags are no longer trending, before the paint fades on the closets that were painted black lives matter, what are the receipts? pledges and promises were made. press releases went out. so, where are we? >> we will stay on that issue with you. finally, you signed on to a letter with 90 other congressional democrats calling on president biden to do more to address our nation's student debt crisis. your letter proceeded the one year anniversary of the presidents pledge to counsel $10,000 in federal student debt for some 43 million borrowers who pledged -- that was struck down by the conservative supreme court. i believe this was in june. in response, the administration just announced a new income driven payment plan for borrowers. a safe plan. you and your massachusetts colleagues senator elizabeth warren have praise the plan. , the senator has cautioned republicans are already trying to repeal the relief. what more can you tell us. we are out of time. i had to ask about it. be brief. >> all i can say is that inaction is not an option. even when we have a corrupt supreme court that seeks to obstruct progress and meaningful relief because constituents, my family and friends, many are in financial panic about what it will mean if this relief does not come quickly. particularly in light of the fact that payments will resume in the fall. >> thank you for being with us, congresswoman ayanna pressley. let's turn back to yesterday's shooting in jacksonville, florida. now, the and investigated as a hate crime. joining me now is reverend frank reid, bishop frank reid, bishop at the african methodist church in jacksonville, florida. bishop read, thank you for being with us. you and i go back decades in this kind of more. the mayor of jacksonville pointed out that the shooting came on the five year anniversary of another shooting at a gaming tournament in the city. yesterday's gunman was inspired by that 2018 shooting. all right we were marching against hate and washington yesterday. to start with your support and blessings on the march, tell me how the community in jacksonville is doing? i saw that two pairs are taking place today. how are people coping with this tragedy? >> people are coping through prayer. through supporting one another in positive conversations, and in planning. planning for where we go from here? to use doctor king's fourth and final book that he wrote. seeing the chaos as an opportunity to redeem the soul not only on florida but to redeem the signal of america. >> the jacksonville sheriff has said that the 21-year-old shooter intended to kill black people. the shooting comes just a day before the 63rd anniversary of jacksonville's most infamous racist incident. known as ex handle saturday. it also comes at a time when there is been a considerable debate surrounding the teaching of black history in florida schools. now, in my capacity as the action network, i've come to the state to demonstrate against changes being made to the curriculum. which you supported as the bishop, roofs and homes had been out front. are there any lessons you can think can be drawn from this tragedy that could be applied to how we talk about race in this country? and in your state. >> i think as congresswoman just said, in christian vernacular, death and life is in the power of the -- i think we have to look not only at the words and the rhetoric, we have to look at the policies. the way we change those policies is to use this tragedy as a time of transformation to begin to plan for the 2024, the election in 24. to begin to plan on how we take back public education boards throughout our state and throughout the nation. so we can change these reactionary policies. now, witnesses say the deceased gunman the scene earlier in the day at the waters university. a historically black college wearing a ballistic vest before he was asked to leave. headed to the dollar tree. officials also shed voters early shooters rifle, adorned with racist rhetoric and symbols, including swastikas. antisemitic. a recent fbi report on hate motivated violence released and march of this year reported that the number of hate crimes reported in the u.s. rose between 2020 and 2021. has reached the highest level since the government began tracking the crimes in the early 90s. jacksonville is a city that is 30% black. what do you think is fueling the rise of hate crimes and extremist violence, bishop? >> he white supremacist language. before i go on, statistics, the number of white domestic terrorist groups have grown in florida and nationally during the same period of time. so, i think that it is time for you and the national action network, reverend barber, to join with local pastors in the state of florida. we are going to call fast this week. we can fast and pray for these families that have lost level ones. at the end of the week, come up with a plan to address these policies and these issues together. as you in the continuation, as you know, continuation yesterday, and takes a team to achieve the dream. to gather, we want to put together a plan. rooted and player and -- so we can cast out this systemic demon of white supremacy. >> i committed to doing. just give me the details. one last question. jacksonville county sheriff's office said that there was not a red flag that could have come up to stop the shooter from purchasing guns. it appears they purchased and possess guns legally. we've seen many local leaders like yourself speaking out. and i will be talking to more faith leaders in the coming days. i delivered a sermon today at howard university against dressing the tragedy. your thoughts on what can be done to curb the violence we witnessed yesterday. -- calling on faith leaders to do it. >> we have to ask not only a reasonable gun law. we also must pass the john lewis voting rights act. and i think reverend al, in the bible, you know it talks about -- when god says today that after the enemies have taken everything from and burned everything, god says to gain a pursuit. i think we need to have a cover all plan. we need to recover voting rights. we need to recover gun laws that keep our people and our children and our neighbors safe. as we do that, i think we will see a change. we will have confronted and called out the demon of white racism, as you know, it is a mental disease. we will redeem the soul of america. >> thank you so much, always an honor to speak with the bishop frank reid. he is in jacksonville, florida. coming up, as we mark the 16th anniversary of the march on washington, an
