in florida. but the states gop looking to restrict voting rights. tonight, the efforts on the way to fight back. we will start this hour for you with a ukrainian commander confirming right now that about 20 women and children successfully made it out of mariupol's embattled steel plant. united nations have been leading efforts to rescue up to 8000 civilians who have been bunkering underneath that berry structure. russian troops have destroyed mariupol, where an estimated 100,000 ukrainians remain. russia's destruction of the port city is part of the strategy to overtake the donbas region. but, the pentagon says that fierce pushback from the ukrainian troops have set russia several days behind schedule. that is rj thing too heavy weapons that the west has been sending to ukraine in recent days. president biden requested for even more military aid to be sent. earlier this week, he asked congress to authorize 33 billion dollars of artillery, anti tank weapons and funds for economic and humanitarian relief. meanwhile, actress angelina jolie was spotted in ukraine today. she is in lviv visiting children injured by attacks in kramatorsk. nbc correspondent, cal perry, is live for us in kyiv. cal, the most important development tonight at this hour, certainly, what appears to be collaboration that is working on both sides there in mariupol? what do you know? >> absolutely, small steps for certain, but stepped in the right direction. at least 20 civilians making it out of the city. probably, not surprisingly, the russians and ukrainians disagreeing on actually how it came about. the russians say that they facilitate and permitted to 25 civilians. ukrainians making it clear to nbc news that it was in fact the red cross that facilitated the evacuation. it was 20 civilians. either way, you are looking there a video from underneath that still works factory, the situation there remains, in the word of officials, hell. you have a leasing such a civilians bunker down there. some are wounded. you have some ukrainian marines wounded. this is a place that is running out of food, running out of water, that has limited medical supplies. you get a picture of how bleak the situation is there. the country is watching the situation, as they have now for weeks because we have been in that besieged place now for a number of weeks. fighting heavy not just there today, across the country as well. in the east part of the country, at least four people were killed, eight wounded in shelling that took place in 36 different locations. russia is that bring up its attacks in the east. when you talk to government officials here, they will tell you that the heroic defense of the steel factory in mariupol is preventing russian troops from actually redeploying in the eastern part of the country. it is something that the military is planning to hear as a victory, even though these pictures, as you have been looking at over the past few weeks, are certainly devastating. >> cal, thanks as always. nbc's cal perry live for us there in ukraine, appreciate it so much. the war in ukraine struck home close for one marine who was killed fighting alongside the ukraine military. our reporter with our new york station has the details for us. >> an outpouring of grief for 22-year-old willie joseph cancel, the former u.s. marine who fought and died alongside ukrainian forces. >> it paints my heart because i am a former marine. i did 20 years in the marine corps. i know he wanted to serve for freedom, but he paid the ultimate sacrifice, and it is sad to hear. >> will these mother first confirmed the death to cnn, saying that he was killed on monday while working with the private military contractor. the news, a devastating blow for his home's town of orange county, new york, which once served as a law enforcement firefighter. >> a lot of kids his age do not understand what they want to do in life. he seemed to have figured it out at a young age. >> the county executive writing in part that we will never forget will ease privy and sacrifice. his wife, brittani, telling fox news that he went there wanted to help people. he had always felt that was his main mission in life. adding that they have a seven -month-year-old son who will not be without a father. according to family, willie lived and worked in tennessee where he was a correctional officer. he inspired to pursue a career in law enforcement. he joined the marine corps in 2017 as an infantry riflemen. in 2020, a military judge convicted him of violating a lawful general order, he was given a bad conduct arch. the state department said they were closely monitoring the situation surrounding his death. >> we are right now in the process of reaching out to his family to learn more details. i would be remiss if i did not take this opportunity to reiterate what we have said for weeks now, americans should not travel to ukraine. it is inherently dangerous. >> despite the warning, thousands of foreign fighters, including americans, have traveled to support ukraine, putting their lives on the line for a brutal battle nearing a third month. >> thinks they're two w and bc 's gabrielle for that support. i want to bring in the former ambassador to ukraine, john herbst, he is the senior director of the atlantic council at the eurasia center. you see these stories like willis, what does that say about your belief here as our commitment as america to what is happening in ukraine. whether it is informal or formal? again, president biden recommitting support military and otherwise. >> look, a very large majority of american people recognize that moscow is pursuing a brutal war designed to not just subjugate ukraine but step out the whole nature of ukrainian people. so, individual american see this as something that they want to stop. of course, the u.s. government recognizes that we have a vital national interests in defeating russian aggression in ukraine before comes to our nato allies, who we have a duty to send a sort of just a fight. >> ambassador, we just heard from cal perry about the developments and variable, potentially from what we are hearing, ukrainian commander, at least 20 people were able to bring our normal correspondent, the present beginnings introduction, let's tune in. >> an introduction, and a special thanks to the 42% of you that actually applaud it. i am excited to be here tonight. the only group of americans with a lower approval rating than i have. that's hard to say after what we just saw. it's the first time that a president attended this dinner in six years. it's understandable. we had a horrible play, followed by two years of covid. just imagine if my predecessor came to this dinner, this year, now that would have been a real coup, if that occurred. tough crowd, ha? i'm honored to be here at this honored event, was so much history. as already referenced, the first president to attend a white house correspondents dinner was calvin coolidge in 1924. i was elected to the united states senate at that time. i remember saying, cal, just be yourself, get up there, speak from the heart. you'll be great, kid, you do it well. of course, jill is with me tonight. jill, how are you, kid? i think she does an incredible job as first lady. the first lady to continue working full-time, as she does, as a professor. she doesn't pay much attention to the polls. though, she did say, the other day, instead of introducing myself as joe biden's husband, maybe, i should introduce myself as her roommate. i've attended this dinner many times, but this is my first time as president. the organizers had it hard. they made it hard for me tonight. although the good news is, if all goes well, i have a shot at replacing james corden. great having him over at the white house the other day, just as he announced he is leaving the show. great performers, going out on top after eight years on the job. sounds about right to me. it's tough to follow perot's like james, and billy ike near. billy, where are you? where is he? billy, you are famous for your interviewing skills. billy, you should know, what you are doing. you do it well. i think you should host to meet the press, maybe i'd watch it again. i've never had this kind of open. i'll never be invited to meet the press again, anyways. i've never had to open before. trevor noah, he was great. when i was elected he did a show, and he called me, america's new dad. let me tell you something, pal. i'm flattered that anyone would call me a new anything. my god. folks, it's been a tough few years for the country. there is one reason why it's great to be here again. everyone at the white house is so excited. i told my gland kids, and pete buttigieg, that they could stay up late to watch this tonight. tonight, we come to answer an important question on everybody's mind. why are we still doing this? i know there are questions about whether we should gather here tonight, because of covid. well, we are here to show the country, we can get through this pandemic. plus, everyone had to prove that they are fully vaccinated, and boosted. so, if you are at home, watching this, and you are wondering how to do that, all you need to do is contact your favorite fox news reporter, they are all here, vaccinated, and boosted. all of them. look, fox news, i'm sorry. your preferred candidate lost the election. to make it up to you, i am happy to give my chief of staff to you all so he can tell sean i.d. -- sean hannity want to say every day. in fact, ron mcclain here at the cvs table, hired mick mulvaney. mick, on cbs? i was stunned. i figured he would end up on masked singer with rudy. amazing high, are quite amazing. i know this is a tough town. i came to office with unambitious agenda, and i expected to face stiff opposition in the senate. i hoped it would be from republicans. i'm not worried about the midterms, i'm not worried. we may end up with more partisan gridlock, but i am confident that we can work it out with my remaining six years in the presidency. folks, i'm not really here to roasted gop, it's not my style. besides, there's nothing i can say about the gop that kevin mccarthy hasn't put on tape. you know, at the same time, a lot of people say the republican party is too extreme, too divisive, too controlled by one person. they say, it is not your father's republican party. ronald reagan said, mr. gorbachev, tear this wall down! today's republican say, tear down mickey mouse's house. soon, they will be storming cinderella's castle, and you can be sure of it. republicans seem to support one fellow, some guy named brandon. he's haven't a good year. and i'm happy for him. let me conclude with a serious word. we live in serious times. we are getting through a devastating pandemic, and we need to stay vigilant. i know kamala wanted to be here, but thankfully, she's doing well. you should all know, she sends her best. we are in a time when all we have so long taken for granted, oversees the liberal world order for the foundation is generally seriously under assault. a home, poison is running through our democracy. all of this taken place with this information massively on the rise. truth is buried by lies and the good honest truth. what is clear, and i mean this from the bottom of my heart, that you, the free press, matter more than you ever did in the last century. [applause] i really mean it. i have always believed that good journalism holds up a mirror to ourselves, to reflect on the good, the bad and the true. tonight, i want to congratulate the awardees and the scholarship winners who carry on that sacred tradition. we have all seen the courage of ukrainian people, because at the courage of american reporters in this room and our colleagues across the world, from on the ground and taken their lives in their own hands. [applause] all of us, ukrainians, russians, bombs, i like to meet your son. we just saw heartbreaking video, nine killed in kyiv, struck by a kamikaze drone strike, shot in the neck while documenting ukrainians fleeing, killed when russian missiles hit the television tower in a residential neighborhood. one journalist from radio liberty just kill days ago, so many of you telling the stories and taking the photos, according to videos of what is happening there. the unvarnished truth shown, showing the destruction, the devastation and, yes, the war crimes. tonight, we also honor the legacy of two historic reporters. that is alice dunn again and uncle pen. i'm glad i saw that tonight, i do not know you are doing that. they are the first black woman white house reporters. they shattered convention to cover segregated nation. the honor journalists, killed, detained -- they covered corruption and held leaders accountable. we honor members of the press, both national and local, covering a once in the century pandemic, where we lost 1 million americans. a generation reckoning on race, the existential threat of climate change the, free press is not the enemy the people, it is far from it. at your best, you are guarding the truth. president kennedy said, i quote, without the bay, without criticism, no administration, no country can succeed and no republican survive. the first amendment grants a free press extraordinary protection. with a comes, as many of you know, a very heavy obligation to seek the truth, as best you can, not to inflame or entertain, but to illuminate and educate. i know it is tough. the industry is changing significantly. there is incredible pressure annual to deliver he instead of shed light, as technology changes so much. the system is changing, but it matters. no kidding, it matters. the truth matters. american democracy is not a reality show. [applause] it is not a reality show. it is reality, itself. the reality is that we are a great country. our future is bright. it is not guaranteed because democracy is never guaranteed. it has to be earned. it has to be defended, it has to be protected. you have heard me say many times, there is not a damn thing that this country can't do if we stand united and do it together! i know we can do anything we want to do. [applause] that is right. i've been around a long time, as has been pointed out many times tonight. [laughs] i have never been more optimistic about america than i am today, every minute. there are times of enormous change, which present enormous opportunities. despite all the crises, all the partisanship, all the shouting and showmanship, i really know this, and you know to, we are a great nation. because we are basically good people. here in america, good journalism, good satire about our leaders, but our society, is quintessentially an american thing. it demonstrates the power of our example. i, honest to god, believe it reveals the soul of the nation. that is what i would like to coast to tonight. if i may. to the journalists and their families, to the people and the elected representatives, to the united states of america! [noise] by the way, madeleine albright was right, we are the indispensable nation. ladies and gentlemen, i will turn this over to trevor now, she got myself into my sea. trevor, the really good news is, now you get the roast the president of united states. unlike in moscow, you won't go to jail. [laughs] the podium is yours. [applause] >> wow, that was pretty fantastic. one more time for president biden, please. [applause] that was really great. i got a promise that i will not be going to jail. i [laughs] will switch things up now. [laughs] let's see how we do this. how is everyone doing tonight? everyone is good? [applause] first of all, thank you so much, steve, good evening, mister president, first lady, members of the media and all the men relieved that ronan farrow is not here tonight. it is my great honor to be speaking at the nation's most distinguished superspreader event. [laughs] , for real, people, what are we doing here? did none of you learn anything from the gridiron dinner. you read any of your newspapers? i expect this from sean hannity, but the rest of you, what are you doing here? you guys spent the last two years telling everyone the importance of wearing masks and avoiding large, indoor gatherings. the second someone offers you a free dinner, you will turn into joe rogan. [laughs] doctor fauci dropped out, that should've been a pretty big sign. fauci thought it was too dangerous to come tonight. pete davidson thinks it's okay. [laughs] we all went with p, okay. all right then. enough -- for those who don't know me, my name is trevor noah, i'm honored to be here. [applause] you could have picked any comedian. you could have invited anyone, but you want with the south african variant, very healthy, i appreciate that. covid risk side, can i just say how happy i am that this event is happening again for the first time in three years. [applause] the truth is i, want to also have a good time tonight. please, i don't relax. i know everyone is worried about who left the, but just chill, we are celebrating, we are out, get comparable, not too comfortable, jeffrey tumor, that took a double. you know it, don't move him, you bunch of haters. so what jeffrey, you made a mistake, you opted out of four near coworkers. that is the first step to win a grammy for comedy album of the year, you are halfway there my friend. we won't stop you, we will come back for mistakes. you might have noticed, i will be telling some jokes tonight. [laughs] but i want you to understand, i am not here to tear anyone down, okay? i might roast you, gently, like a pair of testicles on the top of tucker carlson special. but i am not doing this just for attention. i am a comedian, not kyrsten sinema. whoever thought we would see the day that in american politics when a senator can be openly bisexual but closeted republican, huh? that is progress. yes, i know a lot of you are worried. yes, it is risky making jokes these days. we all saw what happened at the oscars. i actually have been a little bit worried about tonight, i will not lie. what if i make like a really mean joke, you know, about kellyanne conway, and her husband rushes up onstage and thanks me. [laughs] i just hope we all stay calm because it is exciting to be here, even though some people do not think that this initial even exist, as you said mister president. some people think that the shows that the medias too cozy with politicians. what does people do not understand is that you guys have integrity. you would never allow personal connections to affect your ability to be good journalists, isn't that right, chris cuomo? where is chris, by the way? is he here, he couldn't make it? by the way, before we really get going, a few quick announcements, anyone here who is a democrat in a swing district, i have been asked to remind you not to hand your resume to the cable news execs until after the event, please, thank you very much. also, a quick note before people ordered their hubert's home tonight, governor greg abbott is generally providing free busing for the telemundo table. very classy, very classy. [laughs] man, whatever emphasis. look at this room. everyone is here tonight. we have politicians, we have the media, we have celebrities, basically anybody who has been to jeffrey epstein's island. this is an exclusive event. coming in, i heard meghan mccain tongue the bouncer, do you know who my father was? when i hear of a ticket, you can just come in, but she insisted on tying them who her father was, anyways. i will tell you, as somebody coming from africa, i just gotta say, this is so exciting. the b at this swanky party full of washington's most powerful people. it is not as exciting as madison hawthorne made it sound, but it's still very sexy. [laughs] there are many big names here tonight. when my favorites, ron desantis is here. i'm actually surprised that he found the time. he has been so busy trying to outmaneuver trump for 2024. i see you, ron, i see a player. i see what you have been doing, blaming trump for the lockdowns, distancing yourself from the vaccines, that trump created with his own two hands. nobody knew how to make vaccines until i made them, beautiful, beautiful vaccines, nobody knew how, not even thought she. [laughs] ron, ron is playing a coy, man. he will not even tell people if you got the booster. yeah, or is this in florida, don't ask, don't tell. am i right? i see, ron. would i like about ron desantis is that if trump was the original terminator, desantis is like the tea 1000. you are smarter than him, you are slicker than him, you can walk down ramps. because you see, trump said that he won the election, but everyone was able to look at the numbers and see that he was wrong. that is why ron desantis is once the head, first ban the math textbooks then nobody knows how to count votes. boom! my man! [applause] whatever room. are you kidding me? the great chef, jose andrés, joining me here tonight. given up from people! [applause] my good friend in the room. whenever there is a disaster anywhere in the world, chef jose is there, which i guess is why he is sitting at the cnn table tonight. [laughs] now, of course, the real reason it is such an honor to be here tonight is that we all get to be in the same room as the most powerful men and united states. let's give it up to joe mensch, everybody. where is he? is he there, good to see you sir. for real, mister president, thank you for being here, thank you for having me here. i was a little confused, why me? but then i was told that you get your high approval ratings when a biracial african guys the next few, so a -- [laughs] [applause] i want to just say, joe, glad that i can do my part. hopefully, this will work. i am not actually him, i just did the voice. more importantly, first lady, doctor joe biden, is here everybody. give it up or. [applause] you know, interesting fact, even as first lady, doctor biden continued her teaching career. is the first time that a presidential spouse is ever done so, ever. congratulations. [applause] you might think it is because she loves teaching so much, but it is because she is still paying off a student debts. i'm sorry about that, joe. [laughs] i guess that you should have voted for bernie. [laughs] can i just say, i hope everyone will agree that is nice to have a president who is not afraid to come to the white house correspondents dinner. and hear jokes [applause] about himself. i'll be honest if you do not come -- i don't get it, i really don't. i think, ever since you've come in office, i really don't. gases up, renters, up food is up, everything. no, really, it has been a tough first year for you, mister president. surely, you must be worried about 2024. lots of passion on the republican side. there is. it will be an interesting time. and, as you all know, president biden's lack of a filter does get him into hot water sometimes. last about, the caused an international incident saying, vladimir putin should be removed from power. which was very upsetting to russia. you know, until someone explained to them, none of the stuff that biden wants, actually gets done. but, despite some hiccups, president biden has led the country through, some very dark time, since he took office. the covid pandemic, the war for ukraine, the launch of cnn plus. and, don't forget, he has also had some major legislative successes. his first year in office, i might add. a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed, doing everything from fixing america roads, and bridges, to modernizing school buses, which matt gates girlfriend is very excited about. don't boo, love. we know president, in my memory, has given more marginalized groups opportunities. i'm talking about women, the lgbtq community, the taliban, the list goes on, and on. and, i know mister president, the left is super upset at you. but, i think, they should be happy to know, you just recently announced that you are proposing a new 20% minimum tax on the super wealthy. and, i will say, president biden, you were a big man here, a big man. you could have targeted donald trump, instead, you chose to only raise taxes on billionaires. that was big of you. really nice. brittani wrong, show me the texas. personally, i think, president biden could do a better job of taking credit for things that are going right. unemployment, currently, at 3.6%. think of that. 3.6%. 2%, if you don't count the cuomo family. so, i will say, president biden came into office, he's done well, and badly, and in this room i know, there's a lot of mixed reviews. a lot of talk about how the president, really, it's respects the press. but, what has he really done for you guys? think of all the journalists who, in their career, has been hurt by the biden presidency. people like daniel dale. and cnn star fact-checker, on tv, every day. now, barely anything to check. same for glenn kessler of the washington post. on the way here, i saw him on the street offering for pinocchio's for $1. mister president, that's on you. what about maggie haberman? it was exclusives on the russia investigation corruption, and the president doesn't read his daily briefings on, and on. now, look at her. they spend all day fighting with random people on twitter, like a common political reporter. you've ruined, her mister president. now, of course, president biden does not, often, have to deal with the media, directly. that task force, the press secretary, jen psaki. yes, glad you can make it tonight. really glad you can make it tonight, when. nice that you're willing to come here, and risk getting covid for the tenth time now. let me ask, how do you keep getting covid? like, honestly, your boss hooked us up with free tests. doesn't he not have your address? what's happening? the word on the street, actually, is saying that jim psaki is going to msnbc next month. apparently, just being on c-span, the ratings were too high, and she wanted a challenge. you have to switch things up. she can't laugh at that, don't put the camera on her. if you, congratulations to jen, and her career change, but move into msnbc will be a big change. right now, your current job is to make the biden administration look as good as possible. now, an msnbc -- actually, you'll be fine. i'm sorry, i apologize. by the way, msnbc, can i say, you guys are doing good work? i love watching your shows. when trump was an office, your shows were all about how bad he was. now the bidens in office, your shows are all about how bad trump's. consistencies important, we appreciate that. also, showed up to joe, and mika. i love you guys, most adorable hr violation in town. love it. so adorable. that's why we're here, people. we are here to honor the media. first and foremost, it is let's give it up to the white house press pool. let's give it up. you guys are relentless. every day you show up. every day you demand issues pressing for the day. and then, fox news asked about hunter biden. i'll be honest, i think that's a good thing. i do. i think people should be held accountable if they're using their dad's name to get ahead in life. and, i can't think better than anyone to ask about that than peter doocy. wherever he is. chris wallace left at that joke. you see, tonight, we're honoring some of the country's best political journalists. abby philip, a bunch of others. and then there is mick mulvaney. actually, where did cvs hide him? he's more than the guy who assured everyone that donald trump would concede, gracefully. no, also, he can get you access to other people who assured you that donald trump conceded gracefully. shout out to cbs, my corporate cousin. you can find us on paramount plus, yes, right between spongebob squarepants, in a bunch of movies that deltas in flight entertainment system turned down. and i want to dwell on that, i don't want to dwell on mick mulvaney when we have other journalists here tonight. we have anderson cooper in the house, tonight. we have rachel maddow, don lemon, shepherds mid, so many other huge challenge who can no longer be mentioned in florida public schools. i see you around desantis, how is it going? it lots of big media names in the room tonight. truck taught us here. chuck, you hear? how are you doing? i'd ask you a follow-up, you don't know what those are. i don't boo him, he is trying. those people i mean, chuck. the axios team, also in the house. but axios is actually greet for political playbook for their birthdays. and you know, axios says a lot of flak, a few years ago, with a stark photo for cpac. but, kudos to axios. they fix the problem for not releasing more staff photos. i'm a fan, a personal fan. you've been crushing with those interviews, congrats on the award, and get these politicians to the australian accent. american journalist out too aggressive. what did you do with the money? in an interview with jonathan swan is like being interrogated by a koala. but, senator mcconnell, don't you think it is strange that you, and the devil, have never been seen in the same place at the same time? don't you think that is strange? >> i guess when you go to hell, you will find out for yourself. >> npr, here tonight, one of my favorites. congratulations for all the work you do. i love tiny desk concerts. i wish you guys didn't always have to beg for money. maybe you spend too much on those topics. who designs those? house of gucci? why not just ask ivanka which kids makers? how about the new york times? also here. new york times, i did not realize how much you guys like to party. i've seen some of you sneaking off to the bathroom to do things are not supposed to do tonight. like post on twitter. i've seen that. i love the new york times, you guys are the best. some of the most accurate, precise reporting. i feel to write down exactly what the police have given you to say, really powerful. keep living bill reform on crimes, and with nothing to do with bill reform. they're saying, mets blow the four run lead, due to changes and state bail laws. it's crazy how you guys have been attacked for everything from here investigations into trump's taxes, reporting on the pandemic, and yet, the biggest death threats that you received, in with two elves in the wordle that day. they were robbed. it is going to with the kevin mccarthy tapes, and give it up today. they are incredible. it is immediately waiting for the book to be for sale, and then you say, bravo. you know what i liked about those tapes? those people are saying with nancy pelosi, or kevin mccarthy, our speaker of the house. that would still be held for them being resigned, and for january 6th. but, if it's bipartisanship, and it is the kings of cable here, with fox news in the house. with the top 300 years, killing at. so, i know fox says the information when they're tearing up for them. they crush it. i think they get a bad rap. it's a mixed bag. it is just depending on when you watch. so, fox news, right here, in the waffle house. it is relatively normal this afternoon, but as soon as the sun goes down -- there is a drunk lady, named jeanine, threatening to fight every mexican who comes in. you can't throw me out, i know the real president. how about that fox primetime lineup? more ingram, sean hannity, their coverage of covid was impactful. it was really moving the viewers, in the icu. congrats to sean hannity, unbecoming the long-running host and cable news history. give it up to them. give it up to them. longest running host. don't hate, hate the player. so, fun fact, and ainsley erhard, actually, dating right now. i think it's beautiful to see an officer romance at fox about an eighth of 20 million dollar settlement. wherever roger ailes is right now, he's looking up and smiling. oh, laura ingraham! wow! what can you say about her that hasn't been said by the anti-defamation league? powerful. i'm just upset the talk across it isn't here, he's my favorite, what a talent. tucker carlson? are you kidding me? wow. that man is a beast. who could fill an entire show, each night, asking questions that google could answer? do vaccines work? who really won the election? who is the president right now? is this america? there's so much happening in the world right now. sometimes, it can be overwhelming. you just want to tune it all out. so, that is why i love watching cnn. where is jeff soccer, by the way? also couldn't make it? what's happening? apparently jeff was fired after he tried to keep his workplace relationship a secret, which is we are, because we don't want someone to know about it, he could've made a show about it on cnn plus. i know, i know, it's so sad. cnn plus, gone, but remember, it's forgotten. i blame john king, that's who. john, your magic role can predict how every person in the country will vote in every county, but couldn't give you a heads up that no one wanted more cnn? i mean, they spent $300 million on cnn plus. 300 million! can i be honest, cnn? i think stanley tucci was playing you guys. i think that dude knew exactly where italy was. he was just gonna keep searching as long as you would pay him. 300 million! you know how much money that is? i do get it, streaming is the future. as the old saying goes, you need to spend money, to make sure that chris cuomo doesn't get into a wrongful termination lawsuit. that's not the only big change going on at cnn. they brought on chris looked, and my man over there. it is going with the first order, business the guidance with the breaking news banner. what happened with that? they put us on during the chase, and will never forget to get rid of it. there's an important time for the world. as for many industries, the pandemic was major interruptions from journalists. they can also help humanizing you. it was reporting from inside of their own homes. meanwhile, reporters, and print media said, we get it, you have a home. way to show off. we have to face the facts. media is in a tough position. informing the american public is harder than ever before. your battling conspiracy theories. the election was stolen by george soros, that jfk junior is still alive, and in this room, with a secret pedophile, it is what terrence clark's believes. this is truly the golden era of conspiracy theories. whether that is the right wing, believing that trump can still win the 2020 election, or, the left believing that joe biden can still win the 2024 election. thank you mister president. as we sit in this room tonight, i really do hope, with the real purpose of this, and the, drink they're fun, but the reason why we're here is to honor, and celebrate the media and, what you stand for. an additional check and balance, holding power to account, and gives voice to those who otherwise wouldn't have won. i am not just talking about cnn, or fox, or many other major organizations. we're talking about everyone. young journalist we saw, today. intrepid journalist, who aren't even in this room, in flint michigan, and the des moines register, or the unflinching news register and el paso texas. every single one of you, each of you, is a bastion of democracy. and, if you ever begin to doubt your responsibilities, if you ever begin to doubt, just how meaningful it is, look no further than what happens in ukraine. look what happens there. journalist risk, and lose, their lives to show the world what is happening. you realize, it's what it is. in america, you have the right to seek the truth, and speak the truth. even making people in power uncomfortable. it is making readers uncomfortable. i made fun of the president of the united states, and i'm going to be fine. i'm going to be fine, right? you understand what a blessing it is? maybe this happened for so long, and may slip your mind, but it's a blessing. honestly, ask yourself this question. if russian journalists, who are losing their livelihoods, as you're talking about, stephen. their freedom for daring to report on with their own government is doing. if they have the freedom to write any words to show any stories, or any questions, but if they have, basically, what you have, would they be using it in the same way that you do? ask yourself that question every day. with those important roles in the world. thank you so much for having me. i appreciate you. please be careful leaving tonight, we all know this administration does not handle evacuations well. good night, thank you so much. there you have it. a lot of laughs at the cost of some individuals reputations, all throughout the last 30 minutes, trevor noah. again, roasting the president during the white house correspondents dinner. it seems like they may be closing out. they're supposed to finish a 10:30. there are little over right now. that is it for the coverage of the white house correspondents dinner. we will have more continuing coverage, right here, on msnbc. we return to regular programming. return to regular two of the right biggest political talking points, colliding, right now. the new york times finds that republicans, and more than a dozen states across the country, are increasingly claiming, without evidence, that undocumented immigrants are committing voter fraud. these accusations against immigrants, breathing new life into the 2020 pick lie. but, there is no evidence of any widespread voter fraud, according to former president trump's justice department, in late 2020. and, recounts in places like maricopa county arizona. so, this comes as republican candidates have made immigration a focal point in the midterms as seen and political ads. here is a candidate for senate in ohio, j.d. vance. >> the media calls as racist for wanting to build trump's wall. they censor us, but it does not change the truth. joe biden's open border, killing ohioans. with more illegal drugs, and more democrat voters pouring into this country. >> as the biden ministration looks to rescind title 42, the trump era public health policy, that expel migrants at the border, republicans like congressman jim jordan, using a hearing, this week, with homeland security secretary, alejandro mayorkas, to paint the biden administration as willing agents of chaos, when it comes to the border. >> do you think that, maybe, just maybe, your actions and policies are encouraging migrants to come to the border? moratorium on deportations was announced on day one, by president biden. you ended remains with the northern countries, there stop building the wall, and in a few days, title four cars away. do you think that encourages people to come to the border? >> congressman, the increase at the border is the result of a number of factors, and his original phenomenon. >> a number of factors, a messy about those specific factors, your actor tunes, your policies. >> i do not. >> with me now, jasmine, a national political reporter for the new york times. you know, this language we hear, jasmine, we have seen it every two years, every four years, every eight years, the idea of a comprehensive, immigration reform package, seeming so far away from the state, here, in 2022. what do you see in the language that is being used, by politicians, who are, and now, looking at the midterms, right now? >> what i am hearing is, really, this newer strain. it is these two issues, that are emerging. illegal immigration, and this belief in lies, that the 2020 election is stolen from president trump. you are hearing more echoes with, this grand replacement theory, this conspiracy theory, that black and brown immigrants are coming into the country to replace white people. you are hearing echoes -- not even echoes, you are hearing this rhetoric of invasion. you hear these very old beliefs that, to confer this old language, that conflates illegal immigration in crime, but you also get this new restrain, which is that unauthorized immigrants are crossing the border, to vote, specifically, to vote democrat. so, as you said, it's in this basis that voter fraud is extremely rare. but, also, the data that we do have, what immigrants do vote, when we saw in the last election, is in cities where there were larger immigrant populations, it was actually a turn to the right. is wrong and more ways than one. >> the data is not there, and both conflation's you bring up. we were mentoring it earlier in today's our. so, on top of that, as this energy, and thematic of bringing these two ideas together, there is, often, and opposite reaction, as you have written, that it may mobilize those who say, no, this is wrong, it may get out the vote. how may that happen? >> yes. some republican consultants have warned, this could mobilize the other side. that it will not work in the general election. but, so far, republicans see again in perpetrating, and in amplifying this language. democrats, themselves, are very divided on that issue. you have seen a push back with, concerted pushback from democrats, on this narrative. you are seeing at, when you take a look, it adds in 18 states, which is just analyzing the rhetoric, and it is from unsecure elections, to unsecured borders, and you get the company coming, over, and over, and no pushback on the other side? it then becomes much more difficult to counter that narrative. >> how are those who, are going up against these candidates that are taking on this narrative, fighting back against it? are they addressing the wrong next, or the incorrectness, of what the statements are being made by these candidates? are they fighting back those who are against these particular candidates in the primaries? >> to some extent. i am not hearing as much as some people want, especially as immigrant advocates would like to hear more about, and on the ground is. ohio is a state, and needs workers, and relies on immigrant workers, and many immigrant workers are coming into this state, actual, you have work visas, or are here illegally. even immigrants, who are coming in, which is another -- another false statement, which is, that immigrants have a legal right to claim asylum. there is this false notion, it is just open borders, and people wander in. i can hear it from voters, all the time, saying that there are boatloads of hispanics arriving, or dropping off children on the streets. i was talking to immigrant advocates and they say, this is not the case. >> on that note, how does title 42 work into this conversation, which is already heated, as his? >> title 42, i think, use at the crust of this issue. it is what is causing a lot of fear among republicans, concerns that the border will just be open, and that there will be this big flood of people. i hear that from voters, a lot, from republican voters, a lot, which, is again, the reality is much different. >> all right. thank you so much, from the new york times. a great article, and i appreciate it. i appreciate your time, and have a very good weekend. >> thank you, you too. >> now, in the time we spent together today, one hate incident occurred. one person, assaulting another, verbally, or physically, or both. that one hate incident, in this hour, and each hour to come, again, is somebody like me. i am asian american, and pacific islander. tomorrow, starting a month that hopes to slow this unnerving phenomena. on april 29th, the president issued a proclamation that may 2022 is asian american, and pacific islander heritage month. he said, in part, quote, hatred is no safe harbor in america's future. we must confront shameful chapters in our history. these chapters have, certainly, tested us all. latino, black, asian,, native white american communities, all. there is no lack of resolve, however. but, maybe they are using a lack of muscle tone. even as asian pastor, and social worker, who's a bit flabby, as well. then, he started to question himself. he would ask, when do i explore?
