>> trump believes the second tweet, and a third tweet comes in. and it says big press conference in philadelphia and four seasons total landscaping -- why print lawyers hold -- >> a started tweeting at the four seasons in philadelphia. not a hotel, but four seasons total landscaping. it remains of clear with the trump campaign book the whole thing in air. not >> why did you pick this place? it was just a head-scratcher. it was just the beginning of how surreal this event was. it's not prominent. why is it here? we had more questions than we could possibly have answered. which >> trump it was always difficult to get answers about the truth. some answers were because they didn't know the answers, but often because they were lying. i spent weeks and weeks interviewing everybody i could. and hitting dead and after dead-end. >> nobody really knew how they ended up at a landscaping place. in a part of town that normally is not where campaigns host these things. i set out to try to answer what was a simple question, will the hell had happened? and the longer that i dug into it, the crazier and crazier it was. >> mistake or not, they held the press conference at the loading dock, of the landscaper. here's what it looked like! >> that's quite an image! for jack's power. >> obviously they screwed up, they called the wrong place in the said let's just go with. it >> we are industrial strip, with a crematorium across the street, and an adult video on bookstore up the street. >> there was a level of excitement among our staff that would be hosting the president's campaign staff here. but that was quickly fault by, dread. >> an obvious group invoking, but they all played along pretended that that was the master plan. >> there are two different theories, really, that i had, and that other people had as well. one, i thought that maybe they had -- someone thought that they could book the four seasons hotel. someone on the campaign, made the president think, that it was a possibility that it will be held there, and once he tweeted that, they google the rounded found that the closest thing called four seasons, to the foursomes philadelphia happen to be this landscape in place. the other theory that i had is that it was just perfect storm of minor screw ups, from various people, a very love of the campaign. and somehow, maybe through a connection, or an accident. they ended up here. >> i made the campaign staff here at about 9:30. it was a pretty quick set up, obviously you saw was on tv. i'm pretty proud of the space that we were able to curated such a small amount of time. it was a landscape construction yard. >> normally, you might have police outside on the perimeter. but it was just private security. and they ask us to put a organizations down on the clipboard, and they would call us. in and they made it look like it might be exclusive. like we might not all get called. in >> [inaudible] >> every time they call the news organization, the 60 a trump supporter boot. >> we request of the republican, the information -- the media is blank, the medias all blanks. >> seeing julianna pulling up and -- i thought i was dreaming. no one famous is ever been here. it was almost like in slow motion, like him walking into the office. >> actually gonna come here, and i got a phone call from my son anthony, and he said mom, this is bigger than we think! and he sent me a picture warm talking to. and rudy is sitting at my desk, and there's a plaque in front of my vest that says boss. lady i look at my husband, and i said we i think we have to get over. there >> -- i demand you shut the heck up. >> they made us our own lego, set! there was a dram of our company in berlin. that amazed me! who would want? this >> someone made a virtual reality four seasons. we have people showing up on our doorstep knocking asking for t-shirts. we've been at one employee that was leaving, and someone offered them $50, for the stain sweaty t-shirt off their back. we had hundreds of visitors coming in the first couple of days following our social media revamp. suddenly we had fans! it was surreal. >> could you look at all these people out? here >> it's like every day, this is insane. people have referred to us as a philly landmark. we've had so many families out front. we even had two sisters, one lived in bethlehem pennsylvania. the other new york city. >> they met here, with a blanket and a pinkett nick back it, and they had a thanksgiving dinner together here. i really think that the four seasons hotel thing was a blessing for us! if our name had been marines last keeping, none of this would've happened. >> while the team of four seasons total that's coming at seems to have taken this in their stride, go online now and you can buy a range of make america great again, and lawn in order merchandise. >> i reached out to the four seasons hotel, and i concluded that nobody from the financial campaign have reached out to the four seasons hotel about hosting any kind of event. >> i love the narrative that it was a mistake, and they meant to book the four seasons hotel. >> there was no mistake. this is exactly where the press conference was supposed to be. >> they did serve in some areas along the i-95 corridor, and our site was one of the ones that they determine would be secure with quick access on and off the highway. >> and it was free! that's another important thing. the trump campaign blew through 1.1 billion dollars. they were near broke. before presidential elections. didn't have any money! and that's why they couldn't even do it at the four seasons hotel. they would've charge them. >> that's why i was at four seasons total landscaping. there's a site track. they didn't want to do it anywhere else. >> this is giving me something, that i can't even explain to. you it's worth more than money. because it is not about money, at all. this was about our story! >> it's an american underdog story. i think we were able to turn something -- and appeared to be disastrous into something positive. before the press conference, four seasons total landscaping were struggling. and almost like a living from paycheck to paycheck. going from being just a local city landscaping company, to now being globally recognized. it's amazing! but we are just honored to be able to get back, to be able to help the next person out. we did a toy drive this week -- christmas with a toy drops for taught. me and shawn went to deliver to the hospital. >> thank you so, much we really appreciate it. >> for them to get, that jewelry. that was the best part for me. you know? how this journey been for? you has a busy family doing? now >> everybody is doing great. and i'll be honest with you, this was the ride of a lifetime. i'm at the end of my career, and i'm happy that i made the decision i made when we were in and -- initially call to hold the press conference here. and, i never could've imagined it would have turned out like this. but, it has been such a year for us. because we've had one thing after another has happened. people have -- they have embraced us around the country and around the world. the messages we have gone, i couldn't be happier. to get to a year and have a documentary is just amazing for us. we are thrilled! >> chris let's talk about the documentary for a moment. how did you decide on doing that documentary about this? how did you connect with the family? how did you manage to get through them with all the thousands of phone calls and messages that they were receiving on any given day. >> well obviously, the whole world wanted to know the mystery, why did the president's lawyer hold the press conference of the landscaping company? so clearly, there was a big question, the million dollar question that needed to be solved. yes, i look from all over the world to reach out for them. but i actually had sort of an in try track. as it turned out a friend of mine's, brother is friends with us on middleton. that like you say that's on four seasons -- i was actually able to get on the phone with them before anyone else did it. and when we got on the phone together, i got the sense that every all that wanted to know, why did this happen? why was the press conference held there? and for me out a lot more interested in actually getting to know them as people. and seeing how their experience has been. just having their world turned upside down. they were such a fish out of water. and for me, the conflict, just called me as a filmmaker. what the hell happened! >> i wanted to play for you, this clip from the documentary, just after the press conference with rudy giuliani, watch this moment. >> that was one of the hardest part for me, i never had to deal with that level of hate. i am talking about hundreds and hundreds of emails. i just got, basically saying to go f myself, they're gonna burn down my building. they created a lot of fear, of what the future holds for four seasons total landscaping. >> so michael, the future has played out a little bit, tell us are used to getting messages like that, how you handle the messages if at all that you receiving? >> if at all that yo receiving? >> basically if anyone ever heads of t-shirts we can. because it's great that even think that there is fans, you know? that's the hardest part for me. there is actual fans. philadelphia-based fan -- landscape keeping company. it's still hard for mcgrath. i always tell people, that if you're in the area, stop through, we'll take pictures if we have time. i love it! >> christopher, you had such an intimate insight into making this documentary. what's surprised you the most, while you are making this film? >> i think to mike's point, the thing that surprised me the most was this outpouring of love. that four seasons received after the press conference. i mean, they sold one point $5 million worth of t-shirts. that's just incredible. you can actually still buy those t-shirts now. people were making christmas cards featuring the garage doors in the zoom background. there were those two sisters that came to the four seasons to have a thanksgiving there. clearly this moment resonated with people. and it created just such an outpouring of love, and suddenly fourth seasons total landscaping sort of meant something to people. it became this mean, that people could actually share with together. and it kind of created this online community. >> i would go on a limb and say there's probably gonna be some wedding proposal there, at some point. >> let me ask you really quickly, marie, let me ask you because become such an iconic location. has any other political party or political campaign reached out to to hold the political event there? and if so, what would you say? >> unfortunately, no other political campaign and approached us. but we would've said yes! because, knowing we are where it got us here, and all the excitement we've had, we would do it again! >> the outpouring in the embracing, that we've had. the way people have treated us. the end result -- was just -- it may not have been business in hans-ing. but, the treatment that we got -- truthfully everywhere we go somebody knows us. it's exciting! it's really exciting! >> you work your whole life and what a way to go out. and that in my career and this is just amazing for me. the people stop me in say, you look like the girl -- the lady from the four seasons. >> i am a lady from four seasons. and it's just funny. it's amazing! >> michael i know the future of these company is so important to you and these family -- we are christopher their talk about how you turns bad situation into a positive one of the merchandise. have you given any thought about the future of the company, and what you can do if you don't plan on expanding from beyond just doing landscaping down to merchandise? >> so the election lies! pushed by the trump campaign after the solar four seasons total landscaping in november 2020, has only kept growing ever since. joining me here to talk about that, one of the producers on four total documentary, olivier nuzzi. the washington correspondent for new york magazine, along with nbc political analyst kimberly analyst, store analyst -- for it's great to have you both with. us the start of that moment there when you look at the time when rudy giuliani was standing there, peddling the allegations of voter fraud in and the election was stolen just as the networks were calling the election for joe biden. it almost seems comical. and you want to laugh at what you are seeing there. but given how this is now resonated among republicans. what is that moment in time mean for where we are as a country? >> one where you can look at it as a major break with reality. the talk about the wheels being off at the trump warehouse. they said that they were wheels. so four seasons was not a breaking point. because things have been insane if the election had been all about conspiracies. it's been that way for a long time. the administration thought about conspiracies donald trump's entire political career. it was all about conspiracies. but it was this kind of formal, moment, where they officially meet conspiracies. and insanity. their strategy going forward. what was followed -- would follow that was the insurrection. even though this was this hilariously weird historic event at this landscaping company, by mistake, or poor planning. it's still -- there is a kind of grim news to the whole thing. knowing what came after! >> typically to that point when you look at where the polling is today on this. some polls suggest as much as 68% of republicans believe the election was stolen. they believe the big lie. they it's even higher for people who use fox news of their main source of information or who trusted. i think it's in the low 80s. how you begin to even counter the big lie when you have that many people buying into it! >> it's difficult, to be sure, this was amplified by donald trump and his campaign. but it goes back so much farther. you have to remember that this is the idea of the big lie. why was it able to take hold, is because decades, lawmakers -- particularly republicans have used this idea of protecting against fraud. fraud has never existed, it's never been proven to make voting more difficult. to pass laws with everything from stripping voters names from polls. from requiring idea requirements. we don't really know it's more difficult for black people, brown people or poor people. to get there in the tenth vote democratic. that's been happening for a long time. you have the stripping of the voting right act would have an even more. sort of that was the kindling, were donald trump's big lies were able to set a fire and really lead to this. so it's a slow build up. and that's why it's so much harder to fight back against now. >> in the months leading up to this fateful day, at four seasons total landscaping. the trump campaign was -- trump was sort of throwing out different reasons why he would eventually lose. once it became clear to him and i remember talking to advisers on the house campaign -- once he started to accept it a possibility he took a really long time, given what the poll said, and how things were going in the country with the coronavirus -- he started to kind of and things up and spit ball about things that were going wrong. who was taking the election from him? and the fact that fraud was forthcoming to give himself an excuse in the event that he did lose. >> if you talk about conspiracy theories there's one moment in the documentary that i think is very foreshadowing. let me play for you, it's when marie starts receiving phone calls and messages, and one of them was a conspiracy theory, watch. >> the things they're saying about us is amazing. i can't even believe. this >> okay guys wait to hear this one. there's a big conspiracy theory, we are burning ballots across the street at the crematorium. >> kimberly that seems like a harbinger of the conspiracy theories that we are now inundated with around this election. because of moments like that! >> absolutely. when there is no uniform source of information, information sources are diversified. with so much misinformation, it's just being fueled into this election. and the past several elections. that is exactly what happens. people believe what they want to believe. they believe even farfetched things as long as it confirms their own biases. and that's where you see that sort of thing run wild. and we are still seeing that today. people are sort of dug into their corners. they are believing whatever supports their side. >> kimberly atkins, -- and biloxi thank you so much at home for watching and keeping the conversation going. online using the hashtag four seasons total. so please join in, i mean all room within, goodnight. goodnight ♪♪ ♪♪ experience the power of sanctuary at the lincoln wish list event. new jerseys are here! there you go. all-american club™?
