also had this to say about how well their current two-dose regimen is stacking up. >> the two doses are significantly effective. but two doses compared to nothing protects you way better than having nothing. >> we'll dive into those findings. we're also tracking the rise of covid hospitalizations in 30 states. and we're also keeping a close eye on capitol hill. we also learned about another big step by the jan 6th deadly insurrection. patty murray will join me in just a few minutes and we'll talk about her kept schism. and going to twill to talk about keeping children safe young. sam brock joins me with more on this, and dr. hilton is joning me. she is also a medical contributor here on msnbc. so walk us through the in data out from pfizer just a few hours ago as cases across the country are again on the rise. >> that is just it. right now they're not good, we're looking at 110,000 infections per day. that is a level they have not been at since early october. six states in the midwest. deaths up by double digits in 19 different states, but we have encouraging news this morning that says they are effective at combatting omicron, however, you need that third shot, the antibody level is a 25 times increase. that brings you up to a level where you would be protected against that booster shot against that infection, all of that really is reassuring. now the ceo of pfizer was on today earlier talking with savanna about where this third shot puts you. here is what he said. so far looks like a third booster. >> it is important to know that two shots from early indications will still protect you. he says there is evidence to suggest that it is presenting right now as less severe than delta. there is a lot of research to be ironed out there. >> over all when it comes to concerns over the omicron variant, how significant is this news from pfizer? >> it is very significant. we know it does offer protection. if people are thinking i don't want to get another dose every six months, when will this end? it will stop when the pandemic ends. the longer we wait to get everyone vaccinated. there was 50 mutation investigation that spike protein, right? so there is a potential there. does that concern you at all? >> it does, that there could be breakthrough cases, and people relying on the fact that if i have these two doses i should be good. do we need to start thinking is this a three-dose series? right? that is what qualifies you to be fully vaccinated. i think that will be on the table in the next few weeks. there is an extra layer of protection versus those that are boostest and those with two shots. >> the seo said that people may need to get that third dose faster than what is currently being recommended. what do you make of that recommendation? >> i think by now it's too early to know. so we have more data in place whether or not three months versus six months. at this sixth month mark, you need to be getting that third dose for that booster dose. if you have johnson and johnson definitely. i would recommend that you get the mrna vaccine this time. >> as all of this is happening, we cannot happen that it is not just the omicron variant, it's the delta strain that is responsible for the overwhelming majority of infections in this country. we're back to 100,000 new cases per day. michigan, ohio, pennsylvania, new york, and illinois accounting for more than half of the recent hospitalizations, what is happening? >> what is happening is that covid-19 has not changed the rules of the game. we're seeing people walking around grocery stores and airports, and i just flew in from arizona and i was surprised to see the lack of masks being utilized. we're no longer social distancing. we're having conventions, concerts, and parties. and we're seeing it is mutating and our cases are increasing and unfortunately we know that when cases increase so does deaths. and right now we have an increase of 13%. we need to get back to masks, social distancing, and everyone get vaccinations and boosters. >> and washing our hands. i was flying yesterday, and i was struck by the number of people that used the restroom and were not washing their hands, nevermind the coronavirus, that's a whole separate conversation. i want to bring in someone that can bring in context here. we're learning about how one vaccine response to the omicron variant and they're trying to learn more about it's effect. they have traced 13,000 people that attended an anime convention, and they attended that conference before testing positive, and peter mcginn joins me now. dr. eboni hilton is sticking around, but how are you doing today, how are you kneeling feeling today? >> i'm great, i'm 100% now. >> what were the symptoms like when you tested positive for the new strain. >> i had light fatigue, runny nose, sore throat for about a day. >> was there any thought to not attending the convention with tens of thousands of people in that space in new york city. >> there was a little bit, the guidelines that were set for the vaccination requirement and the mask made me feel comfortable enough to attend. while i was also fully vaccinated and boosted, i felt comfortable enough to attend. >> were they checking vaccination status to make sure that people were, in fact, vaxed? >> there was a line of people that you had to show proof of vax, but that was not the case for every line there. though i was fully vaccinated and boosted i was sort of waved through as long as i had it in my hand. there was some concerns that the majority of the people, 99.9% of the people at the conference wore their masks except for eating, drinking, and quick pictures. >> did anyone else that you were with at that convention get infected? >> yes, i was with about 30 people and 15 tested positive. >> how was the convention? >> it was super fun. i had a great time. >> dr. hilton, cdc director says they have contacted 35,000 people that attended that convention in new york city to help assess the risks, how significant is that? and what do you think they may learn? >> i think it is very significant. and what i urged medical community, there is a few things i'm noticing is close proximity of people standing together, but we need mask height. i saw several people wearing inadequate masks, one was a mesh mask. those are the types of masks that will infect you, they protect you definitely much more than the cloth masks being utilized. so what does that do in a closed space with that many people in close proximity? it does very little to protect you at all. >> peter, i think you said you originally got johnson and johnson and then the moderna booster, were you surprised that you still got omicron. >> yes, considering i was in close contact with people when masks were being used, and everyone around me had on a mask, so i was very surprised. >> do you think the fact that you were immunized contributed to the mild symptoms? >> absolutely and how fast i recovered as well. there was 24 hours of mild symptoms, islept it off the next day and then i was back to normal. >> thank you, i appreciate you both. >> thank you. >> social media in the spotlight. senators set to grill instagram's ceo about safety concerns for children that use the platform. we'll talk to are reporter about a reporter whose bombshell reporting lead to a senate hearing this afternoon. also, a deal to avoid a debt limit disaster. ly talk to patty murray about that and where the president's agenda goes from here. first, though, tense talks in the two-hour video call, but did it tamp down tensions?
