growing questions a day after three men were convicted in the killing of ahmaud arbery. while attorneys for the convicted men say they plan to appeal. the three who also now face federal hate crime charges. at the same time his employer is exsuppressing releet. >> i was very excited, it was like a great many come true. >> cal perry is live in brunswick, new jersey. tell us about the reactions there. >> jubilation outside of the court seriously and i would say relief shortly after. pe we saw his father speak out in joy. he said this was a long time coming and it was for the family and supporters of the family, murdered on february the 23rd of 2020. this community has been through a lot. i have to tell you it is a quiet day this morning. i think folks are grateful for that the national media descends on these towns. i think folks are happy frankly that people are living town and enjoying their something roll day. she said there would be a seat left empty at her something table and that now her son could rest in peace. >> let's talk about the sentencing. what will be look like for these three men. >> there is no real ambiguity about where it is headed. all of the defendants face life imprisonment. and beyond that seasons for the charges they have been convicted of. they are still facing federal charges or hate crimes, a separate jurisdiction. that is authorized as well. so me what stands out is there are still states that don't have hate crimes, but we still have states that don't have hap crimes. to me what stands out on this thanksgiving day is that we're here, i'm surrounded by my family, actually all sitting here in the room watching me, is where do go in terms of our next steps? what do we do and how do we make sure that we don't have another ahmaud arbery tomorrow. it is not real justice until we make a change. yesterday was a condemnation of racism, but, you know, i thought about it last night and the things that stand out to me, things that frustrated me personally were the racist overtones and the dog whistles all in this case against communities of color. and the fact that they talked about the ahmaud arbery and people with no reason to be in this neighborhood, he lived 1.8 miles away from the location he was running from. he was running through. this is a tale of two cities for the rest of the country as well. it is frustrating to me that these are the challenges in the country we live in, but i'm cautiously optimistic about what this change can be if we're all leaning in to become advocates. it doesn't mean you have to be a activist, you can be an advocate. we can dig in and deal deeper. and i think that is the call to action as we're looking around today on television and giving thanks for this circuit, we have to ask ourselves what can we do to perpetuate the opportunity to codify this? >> thank you, paul, so important. every single word you said is really important, especially on this day. paul, do we a favor and thank your family for me for letting you be with me. i think it is going to be, i think you're going to have to go to the switchen soon, right? we value to pay a part in cooking today. >> i have child care duty. i will be at the little table. >> paul and cal, thank you for being with me this morning. let's go to the president and ceo of the national urban league. it is always a pleasure to see you, my friend. what's your reaction to these verdicts? >> i'm keeping today for the arbery family in would be a day they would sit down reich families across the united states and enjoy thanksgiving with ahmaud. he is not there. so i weep for the family while i look at this as a bittersweet occurrence. it is bitter because this young black man lost his life nor reason. he was murdered in cold blood through the actions of three vigilante that's had no reason whatsoever to stop him, no reason to kill him. the whole thing reeked of old fashioned racism. however we see in this case that the justice system can, in this case, it was an example of it working. a strong serious prosecutor. armed with overwelling evidence, a vapt. and he admitted that he was no n no way threatened, he was completely under cut any opportunity to claim self defense. and then a defense that went low by challenging the role of african-american minister that's there were to support the family. and the low blow of comments on a dead man's physical appearance in court in is a day when justice did win, but it is bitter tweet. this young man did not need to die. >> you know, i was just refrequenting on what paul was saying just a few minutes ago. there has to be change, you know? thing vs. to change. there has to be a way that this just doesn't happen. such a tragedy, and then, yeah. >> i would say you're so right. it must change. i hope it sends a message to all vigilantes and want to be vigilantes that you're not going to get away with with it. that you're not going to go around and what we have to strike at in this country is the culture of gun violence. this idea that i can take the law into my own hands. that it is somehow acceptable for me to use firearms against people who are minding their own business, because i don't think they belong in my neighborhood, right? they don't belong in a particular area. this is what is at the heart of this. this motion of violence mixed with a rise of hatred based on race, religion, and status in this country. and this is where this moment of accountability will hopefully spread, while at the same time in this case, we see this outcome. we saw it in the rittenhouse case. a very different outcome. a jury that seems to sanction vigilanteism. so in this week of both of these trials been in this last period, when we have seen both of these verdicts, it's a mixed outcome. we celebrate the idea that justice and accountability won here, but we still have to look at the case and i don't believe that justice was done and vigilanteism was endorsed. so the take away from people is what is the learning? and i hope that prosecutors, all across the nation, will gain the courage and the conviction to enforce the law. i hope that every state will pass a hate crimes law that has teeth and that prosecutors will not be afraid to use it, and that citizens will use their i phones and they will videotape acts of injustice, which is what we saw in the george floyd case and of course in this case. bryant may not have realized that this videotape would be the very videotape that we would use to convict him. never the less it demonstrates that when people can see what happens, people can put their eyes on it, that those pictures do not lie. so this is a bittersweet victory for justice in this country on this day. but the work ahead is still to come. >> mark, it is always a pleasure to speak to you. thank you so much. >> always good to be with you. >> happy thanksgiving. >> thank you, sir. this morning, president biden and the first lady are using their morning to meet with service members around the world. moments ago they spoke with personnel outside of the station. they also took a group picture together. and josh leatherman is in nantucket following the president. tell us more about this visit moments ago. >> we see him going towards the coast guard station. they are right on the edge of nantucket. this is where president biden and jill biden paid a visit where they were able to sit down. the white house set up for them, a video screen where they could virtually meet with members of the u.s. military from all over the different services, the air force, the navy, the army, as well as, of course, the coast guard. this is a tradition for president biden to pay tribute to the u.s. military on television and it was something that we heard from president biden as well in his thanksgiving day message that he put out earlier on video. thanking troops serving around the world on this holiday. many of them away from their friends and family on this television. we also heard president biden telling the folks there that he is planning to go with his family tomorrow to the christmas tree lighting here on nantucket island. that is something to watch for tomorrow. and president biden, as he was leaving that occasion, that opportunity to meet with service members, he was asked by the group of reporters that were gathered to see his visit what he was thankful for and he said it is these guys, referring to the members of the u.s. military and the coast guard that he has seen doing their work in the south china sea and other places around the world. also using this morning, along with dr. biden, a call to al roker during the macy's thanksgiving day parade where he said his message to americans was that after covid-19 america will be back and stronger than ever. so an optimistic message to americans. and he said that it will be great for meeting with friends and family they have not even. >> you will be celebrating thanksgiving away from home. happy thanksgiving and thanks for what you do. thanks, josh. thanksgiving dinners may be looking closer to normal this year, but how do we keep it that way?
