"the new york times" reports the figures raise the stakes for both the federal reserve and the white house, which are facing a longer period of inflation than expected and may soon come under pressure to act to ensure the price gains don't become a fixture. the biden administration is working to slow the jump in cost. the president announced yesterday a deal with the port of los angeles to quell delays in the supply chain that have contributed to the rising prices. >> today we have some good news. we're going to help speed up the delivery of goods all across america. after weeks of negotiation and working with my team and with the major union retailers and freight movers, the port of los angeles announced today that it's going to begin operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. i want to be clear, this is an across-the-board commitment to going 24/7. this is a first big step in speeding up the movement of materials and goods through our supply chain. >> the white house hopes the added operation time will help end delays on goods as we head into the holiday shopping season. tyler, white house officials have told me now for some weeks they knew this story was coming, and this was sort of peck lating in the background. supply chain issues were being more significant and christmas presents would be damaging for people around the office who can't get gifts if their kids come christmastime and it has burst into mainstream media the last couple of days, and the president addressed it with a speech yesterday. so walk us through what their plan is, but how also this is one of several economic challenges the administration is facing. how is this going to impact his agenda going forward, which, as we know, faces an uncertain future on capitol hill. >> absolutely. we saw yesterday the president is, you know, elevating this issue tremendously as he announced these plans yesterday to open the ports 24/7. but i think this is a serious issue, and they recognize that in large part because this affects americans out of line. it affects their ability, of course, to buy christmas presents and holiday gifts, but it affects christmas presents and everyday events. inflation has rose 5.4% in the last year, and that impacts everything americans do on a day-to-day basis. they're going to look and blame the president of the united states. and the white house is well aware and wants to show it's on top of this issue, however, there's only so much the white house can do. experts and officials i spoke to acknowledge the steps the president outlined yesterday are positive, but it's not going to fully fix the problem. the coronavirus pandemic and lingering effects across the world are worsening this issue, so while the president took some steps, it's not going to fully fix the problems that will exist into the next year, which is a political problem for the president as prices continue to rise and continue supers struggle to get the goods they want to get. >> it feels like an issue that could linger into 2022 and impact the midterm elections. tyler pager, come back soon. still ahead t fda releases guidance on how much salt should be in your food, plus william shatner talks about his trip to space. those stories and a check on the weather when we come right back. e weather when we come right back. paul loves food. but his diabetes made food a mystery. everything felt like a “no.” but then paul went from no to know. with freestyle libre 14 day, now he knows how food affects his glucose. and he knows when to make different choices. take the mystery out of your glucose levels - and lower your a1c. now you know. try it for free. visit freestylelibre.us ♪♪ on ancestry i discovered more about my great-great-grandfather baptiste caretto. ancestry threads all of the little facts together into a narrative so you get to feel like you're walking the same path they did. discomfort back there? >> absolutely. i think virginia and new jersey for that matter because we're really starting to see more tension also shift to new jersey territory. that's seen as pretty reiably blue for democrats, but i think democrats are once again concerned about the issue of turnout. that's why you're seeing major democratic stars in virginia and new jersey, president obama, and others to be there. that's rallying up the democratic base. at least in virginia, there are more democratic voters in virginia. democrats get their peak turnout or maximum turnout, they will likely win virginia. the problem is a number of these polls show higher republican enthusiasm, and we've seen mcauliffe very much address it saying, look, president biden, his approval ratings are somewhat down in virginia. it's an off-year election. the winning party is somewhat fatigued, maybe a little bit complaisant, where you have republicans very much fired up. i can't stress this enough. it's all about turnout in virginia and new jersey, and if we even see mcauliffe pull this off by a couple of points, i think that will still be stressful for democrats going into 2022 because virginia should be a reliably blue leaning state for them. >> i think that's exactly right. certainly the white house is watching this carefully. terry mcauliffe cut from a semi-cloth. they're worrying about his poll numbers and the results from mcauliffe, what thauld comean about president biden's political future as well.
