wideproceeded? many other places, something we should keep in mind here. they are only growing more rabid in our country, includes on politicized turf like governor desantis' florida, where the governor has been attacking rules, dr. fauci and masks to protect children. context matters, you hear about this drama, but most people in that conservative state still support cdc measures. a vocal minority, though, is turning from virulent to violent. people making personal threats against school board officials, who are just trying to coop the schools safe, dealing from stalking to direct menacing threats of violence. >> i don't reject them standing outside my home, i reject them following me around, my car i reject that i need to beg for mercy. they're also going behind my home and brandishing my weapons to my neighbors. they're making false dcf claims against me to my daughter that i have to take an investigator to her playdate, to go underneath her clothing and check for burn marks? that's what i'm against. >> this is america right now. let me tell you the exact legal facts. under the law, people have every right to say and believe what they want and to protest about it. that includes the right to be wrong. it includes the right to believe things that are not even true. people do not have a right under the law to menace, to stalk, or to attack others for their words, for their beliefs, their rights. that's why the fbi has already confirmed it's on the case mulling prosecutions for people who do cross legal lines in this clash around our nation's schools, which is partly in response to disturbing incidents like this around the country. >> he wrote about his family not feeling safe, including an incident where a car sat running in front of his house late at night. [ chanting ] >> berated school members. >> this -- this is it. no, sir, this is illegal. >> they'll follow you, take movies of you, posting our addresses on social media. i had a woman try to run me off the highway at 70 miles an hour twice on friday night. the person cursed aim him and said i hope someone abuses your kids and forces you to watch. >> free speech is protected. attacking people is not. these kind of attacks are not coming out of nowhere right now. there are people on tv falsely claiming that following the mask guidance for children is itself some kind of abuse. this pushback feeds on that virulent opposition that i mentioned. it's part of why the u.s. lags in its target for wider vaccination. that target, from everything we know around the globe, is atanable in this wealthy nation. yesterday the situation is the sand and baroque backdrop for tonight's news with the biden administration seeing people convening on our schools and trying to convert them into a sick, theatrical background for their cos place and it's also part of why joe biden shifted from car rho the to stick, to the mandates. we know from the data that other mandates have worked. local city rules, workplace mandates have proven effective. you have the increasing number of people who are vaccinated under the rules and there's the other thing we know about this. this is public health. this is what the government does, this is what journalists do. you look at the evidence. if something doesn't work, i would come on the news and say think tried the mandate and it isn't working, but in fact, it is. if you get the rare breakthrough case, the vaccine still works to ensure against a grave or deadly covid. when more people are vaccinated in a given area, which is week they talk about the target rate, it makes that area safer for the people there who remain unvaccinated, like children. these are facts. many people are being fed lies instead, including -- i showed you fox news. there's a lot of stuff on facebook, posts that falsely link the vaccine to random celebrities' deaths to try to scare people with propaganda out of getting vaccinated. that's why you can't get news, let alone medical advice from random anonymous lawyers on facebook, which is a point dr. fauci has made countless times as we go through this epidemic together. it's also echoed in a wise question from the poet aubrey graham -- how can anybody tell you the truth when they misinformed? to quote another line -- i know the question rhetorical, because this is a rhetorical question. that guy there can't tell you the truth, because liars can never tell you the truth. let's bring in our experts, former prosecutor mile wiley, and pulitzer prizewinning journalist eugene. maya, your thoughts? >> i'm vaccinated. my children are vaccinated. my partner is vaccinated. teresa is a 10-year-old girl in suffolk, virginia, except she has passed away. the family had a funeral. the family says she was asked to be the nurse, to escort kids to the nurse's office if they were feeling sick. that mother had to go to a school board meeting and beg people not to believe the folks that came to the previous school board meeting, to say that masks were unnecessary, to say that children can't get covid or can't guy from covid. your very point you just made, ari, are dead on, as are eugene's. we are living in a time when some of us are having conversation about our responsibility to public health, while others are having a conversation about their right to, frankly, endanger the rest of us, because they're angry, because they don't feel like this country has served them. it's that simple. they're not the same conversations. they're not the same set of trusted people we're listening to, and we should not and cannot forget that donald trump said a lot of things about covid that were not true, and also undermined mask wearing for months as the president of the united states, as he spread lies about voter fraud. all of this ties together, a nation where democracy can only work if we're willing to have a conversation based on the same set of facts, not made-up untruths. >> gene, we referenced your work. you said covid-19 is a bipartisan killers. vaccination is not political at all. why would people not protect their own health and save their own lives? how is this anything but play stupid? you explore this, and maybe your questions were also rhetorical, but some people are misinformed, because they're being lied to, and they live busy, difficult lives, and now it's catching up with them. my heart goes out to them. other people know better and perpetuate the lies at the risks of their own constituents, viewers, neighbors, you name it, gene. >> it is not just stupid, but it's tragic. like maya, everybody in my house is vaccinated, boosted, you know, if required, if appropriate, and -- but, you know, in my extended family on my wife's side, there was a couple a bit older, in good health, who just didn't get vaccinated. their reasons were not political, as far as i know, but they just didn't do it. their adult children begged them to get vaccinated, but they didn't, and you kind of can guess the ending of the story. they both got covid and they now both are deceased. this happens. you are just killing yourselves by not using a vaccine that keeps from you dying from a deadly, tremendously infectious disease that is a pandemic. why do you not protect yourself? it is just a tragedy that we see unfolding every day, and you look at the death numbers, i mean, that's just ridiculous. it shouldn't be that. we know how to bring those numbers down, not to zero, with you close to it. everybody get vaccinated. >> yeah. it's so important. i want to say, we're leading off with this, when you look at what's happening in the country, the overall covid case count is dropping on a tracking basis, and the mandates are working in some places so it's a mixed bag to be sure. you see this level of attack. our panel stays, as we update on the other big story developments here in the maga riot probe. a former official named jeffrey clark has been served with a subpoena. he was also donald trump's hand-picked ally flown in to try to take over the doj when donald trump was trying to take over democracy that proempted the threats of mass recent ig nations. the biden administration today also rejecting trump's executive privilege, and tomorrow there's an end to the deadline for steve bannon, to put up or get in trouble. he says he will defy the subpoena. >> the committee is completely in solidarity. everyone recognizes how important it is that we enforce our subpoenas. >> maya, as an experienced prosecutor, i'm curious what you see coming down the pike, with trump officials, not even delaying the -- they're just doing the defy thing. >> remember, i was on the civil side of the u.s. attorney's office, but this one is not really rocket science. you have steve bannon, who frankly has not worked in the white house since 2017, on events that didn't have anything to do with a job that he had in government. what that means is, you don't get to have conversations with the president appeared say, protected. no one can know what we said. so, of all the people, the absolutely ridiculous. at the same time, there's no way this committee, once impaneled had any, any illusion that they were just going to get complete cooperation with witnesses, because it just is what the law demands. so, of course, they knew they week in a situation like this, where they were going to have to go to the u.s. attorney's office and say, hey, look. we have a situation we needed to enfours our subpoena power. we've got it under the constitution, we're asking you to do it. it's very hard for me to imagine a u.s. attorney's office doesn't say, you got it. >> gene? >> yeah. i think what needs to happening is a criminal referral followed by a prosecution of these potential witnesses defying these subpoenas. congress has the right to subpoena witnesses. there is no claim of executive privilege. i don't think there's any claim among all these witnesses, especially since there would be an exception when you're talking about criminal activity being planned. setting that aside, dede -- defiance of the subpoenas, i hope they move swiftly and decide decisive think. they should move quickly. >> especially if people are laying it out. fairness is fair, but they're saying this is their card, you have to play it back, you would think. i want to thank you, gene and maya. we have a lot in tonight's show. there's debate raging inside the democratic peter. how should biding handles the ninth inning of this spending clash. james carville is here. you know he has big ideas. later we have a very special guest on how to get safety and even some humor. and william shatner and jeff bezos. stay with us. d jeff bezos. stay with us i don't just play someone brainy on tv - i'm an actual neuroscientist. and i love the science behind neuriva plus. unlike ordinary memory supplements, neuriva plus fuels six key indicators of brain performance. more brain performance?
