gesture. >> it encapsulates every response is hoping for the best. >> good morning, welcome to "morning joe." with us, we have our white house reporter for the associated press, jonathan lemire and willie. you know what's going to happen if i try to start during the news. i am going to start doing the news. >> willie, you got to look at that game last night.classic. san francisco won the los angeles dodgers. zero. this thing is turning into what we expected to be all along. >> a pitchers duo in l.a. i have to confess, i told john i woke up this morning and checked the espn app and saw the red sox and start calling in with a close contact from something from keeping me being on the show today about the red sox. the big money red sox for the last two decades, the dynasty in baseball and all the bounces they want. >> i think i can, i think i can. >> in 2004 giving you the sympathy title. >> well, that's really kind of you. you got hernandez whoever other team pass by were moderate size deals. in baseball a moderate size deal. he turns out to -- doing extraordinary well. you can look at this team ofover achievers. looks like they were in full collapse. the yankees swept them. the orioles took two out of three. now the yankees and the mighty rays who i don't think any of us would have a shot. >> both times teams coming off last place finish and spinning offseasons and taking modest moves. 2013, that title came on the wake of the terrible attack on race day and yesterday, the rescheduled boston marathon due to the pandemic, a crowd friends of mine were there who says it was the loudest more than anything and just amp up and celebrating the under dog team, willie. and they did, the final sunday on the regular season, they're down 5-1 in late innings, the nats. instead, they do come back and beat the yankees. it's 100 wins rays team. that was really sweet last night. >> it was a great rays team. speaking of the blue jays, i think all of us glad didn't have to face them. you look at four teams in the american league east, it's going to be a hell of a run. speaking of over achievers, look at what happened in atlanta. i don't think anybody expected them to do as well as the brewers. these braves are 2-1. >> yeah, they lost their best player, they're playing without him for most of the season and staying on top of that nl east which it was not stellar but they did enough to win the division. they're on the brink of moving to the west. they are a fun team to watch. i have to give a shout-out to swanson. he hits the ball. they got fun players on that team. >> looks great >> jonathan, does anybody have more of a vandy name? peterson unless you are watching baseball all day yesterday. peterson when he hits his home run was using anthony rizzo's bat. >> braves fans are trying to get going here. i want to go back to that dodgers/giants game. it seems at the end of the game, the dodgers had a chance. it was one of the windiest days in l.a., the dodgers died staying in the park. the dodgers, defending champs, the best team in baseball despite having to finish a game behind san francisco in the nl west. just a wide open and different fields to the playoffs this year and it will be a lot of fun. today, astros and red sox, rescheduled game four in chicago, one win away from a red sox/astros nlcs. >> thank you so much. it makes me feel so good that you now are starting to feel the magic of the boston fans there. >> i am rooting for the red sox against the astros because i could you? >> and no doubt, it's like i said before, i would cheer for the yankees against the astros. the last time i cheered for the yankees was when i was cheering for them despite osama bin laden and not comparing my dear friend from houston. i am not comparing the astros to that organization. i am just saying that's the last time i cheered for the new york yankees in 2001. >> lemire was cheering for the d-backs. >> there are only two people in america were cheering against the yankees a month after the 9/11 attacks. lemire was one of them. he went into a new york bar and screamed jeter sucks after it was all over as if new yorkers needed to hear that time and the other was my father who was cheering for the diamondbacks and i turned to my dad, did you cheer the yankees? no, dad, you hate america. >> president bush says you are either with us or against us at that time. jonathan lemire was against us. >> on the right side of history, i stand there. >> you are still on the wrong side of history. should not have cheered for the yankees while ground zero was moldering. >> you have a special kind of hatred. joe, if this continues i am going to let you go. >> what are you going to do? >> i am going to let you go to the game. i am exhausted. >> two times. >> just go. >> someone take him to a game. >> jack and i staying up watching all the games. >> i am sleeping. i am tired. >> we watch "wheel fortune" from 6:00 to 6:30. we get our warm milk and crackers and at 7:00, we are usually asleep by the first commercial break. now, mika is hearing me -- >> they're over 16. >> yes. >> everyone knows it's not like that. >> just go! go to a game. >> still got it. >> come on, seriously? all right, let's get to the news. >> let's go from baseball to music. so the new yorker, our good friend written a great piece on paul mccartney, he had a couple of big things coming up this fall. one is the release, we release peter jackson. i think it's called "get back now," which the first version of "let it be," so gloomy that somebody was obsessed with the beatles. the next thing mccartney has a book. he's got a book of his lyrics that he teamed up with a poet and they go through all his songs he written alphabetically. somebody who read just about everything that could read on the beatles. it's disturbing to me because there is nothing about these four guys and their music i didn't know. >>. >> it's amazing. >> if you love the beatles or paul mccartney, make sure to pick up a new yorker on your phone or the newsstand to read that. now to the news, we are learning new details of what was happening behind the scenes in the white house on january 6th. betrayal, abc news chief washington, jonathan carl, describes how president trump remained out of site watching tv in the white house's private dining room while insurrectionists stormed the u.s. capitol. carl reports, kevin mccarthy called trump asking him to tell the rioters leave. there were shots fired right off the house floor, you need to make this stop. according to carl's sources -- >> can we say right here. >> the former president liked what he saw and boasted o f the size of the crowd and argued with aides. trump finally after two hours after the riot started posting oo video on twitter asking h his supporters to go home but also praising them according to carl and aides who were there during the recording of the video. the message had to be taped several times and in earlier videos, john neglected to tell his supporters to leave. >> donald trump was mesmerizing and cheering on those people using american flags and cramming cops' heads into doors and beating several of them, inches of their lives and begging for their lives saying they had children, rubbing and smearing all over the united states capitol and the people's house. while they were chanting "hang mike pence" and after knowing mike pence was chased from the chamber was tweeting out that mike pence was betraying him and the country. this is exactly by the way what jonathan carl was writing about and what we read other accounts of, ben sass is saying trump is watching tv and loved every second of this. this is what republicans don't want americans to see. if there is a conspiracy of sigh silence that they created around january 6th is all to protect donald trump and their brand for the heinous reactions this man had to a crowdover taking the capitol and committing sedition to try to stop the process to count the electoral votes. >> he would brag to guests about his super tevo device where he would catch up on that morning's show or sometimes hours later watching the same television shows two or three times. it was there where he was that day watching a live footage of january 6th. let's remember the white house is pretty emptied out at that point. we still have a pandemic raging there. staffing levels were down because of the virus but also simply departures. the election is two months prior and people had started to police chief, joe biden is to be inaugurated. there were few people there who could talk to the president. phone calls like people like leader mccarthy urged him to do something and he didn't. he was trans fixed by the images and he would ignore phone calls. when mccarthy called to say you got to call these people off. trump's response was maybe they care more about the election than you do. it took several tries before they finally convinced him to do the video. the videos took several takes. that's sort of the tenor that remains that day and the president became more evident just how bad things had been that day. he was on the phone with allies thinking the election to be overturned and he was heartened by the likes of josh hawley and ted cruz after the insurrection in the middle of the night still voting to challenge the state's responses with unsubstantiated of allegations of fraud. >> joe, what's fascinating is you look back at that time around january 6th, all republicans condemned the president or kevin mccarthy's case encouraging him to call off the dogs is the extent of which nine months later, all of them abandoned their positions to say mike pence coming out to say which is another day of january. he was the one on that day prevented the overturning of the election. if it's kevin mccarthy, his spokesperson says fine, joe biden won the election. chuck grassley on stage with donald trump a couple of nights ago. on that day when they were watching cops had their heads bashed in with the american flags. now, coalesce around donald trump and the idea of the lie that 2020 election was a fraud, that it turned out incorrectly, votes were changed and all the lies they're now on board with. >> yeah, it really is so disgusting and shows an extraordinary lack of political character. really a deep, deep misunderstanding of what patriotism is about, that you have people like -- you talk about lindsey graham going on the floor shaken saying he was done with donald trump and going out golfing saying there is no future within the republican party without donald trump. kevin mccarthy on the house floor saying donald trump shared a great responsibility to this and yelling to donald trump on the phone that it's his people pushing back and then about a week or so. going down to mar-a-lago to lick donald trump's boots. abandoning our constitution certainly. >> for sure. >> and the peaceful transition. >> we need to stop following donald trump and we should not have followed him in the first place at all and she too because of 2024 is doing everything she can to get back to donald trump's good graces. mika, this is not going to work and that's the thing that is so disturbing is that these people are lining up behind a guy who was cheering on rioters and cheering on people who actually, the people who are of constitutional conservatives. people who were doing very best committing seditions against the united states and stopping the peaceful counting of the electoral votes. if you look at conspiracy of u.s. sedition in the u.s. code, that's what they are doing. i am not sure why all of these people going before the courts that were doing these things are not getting the full 20 years in prison. >> well, for those who were trying to get the testify, those who were close to president trump and part of this, and those who tried to stop him that day and abandon it. i will take it right up to mike pence. i do not understand how you can love and regard our constitution as our core values and leave this day behind. i don't understand it. it's an abandonment of something that you are supposed to love which is united states america, our country and our core values that we are based on. >> i don't think the two go together? >> what about mike pence's children who were with him on january 6th and whose lives were in danger and when people were chatting "hang mike pence" and they were not sure if they can trust the guard who were with them at the time because he didn't know if they were more loyal to donald trump or the constitution of the united states. and, they had to hide while his family, his wife and kids are -- "hang mike pence." their lives were put in danger and he's saying now because he's so desperate to grab a little bit more power. he's calling that day any other day in january. >> our whole country is in danger if we let this go by. i think it's confusing to try to have it both ways. >> let's bring in michael schmidt. from what we are learning again i go back to accountability. will we hear from the people close to the president and somehow set a sense of who's accountable for the attack on our country that day? >> well, it looks like january 6th, committee is working towards that. they moved through subpoenas last week of the people around the president who would be able to provide that sor of insight. there could be court fights about that, there could be negotiations about that. whatever it is, it does not look like an easy seamless process, it would be something that'll take time. how that plays out and how we learn about it and what we see for a minute, we still don't know. are there going to be white house documents or e-mails or correspondences of what we get. are we going to hear from the advisers themselves? steve bannon called to testify about this. would he sit for an interview? we are stil in the early stages of that. the process this committee move forward piece by piece trying to put together what went on that day. as you were pointing out at the top there, there is a lot that we sort of know what donald trump was doing. there is a picture that has emerged from these books but you get these sorts of official accounts based on what aides say would be different. >> you have done a lot of report on eastman during this period around january 6th, and infamously had a memo that was revealed in bob woodward and costa's book, showing ways to take steps to overturn the election. we saw it in black and white of the pitch he made. we didn't tell him to overturn the election. we told him to tell congress how to overturn the election. they're republicans and conservative groups held on whitewashing and what happened that day and their roles in it. >> i think the thing about eastman that unnerved so many people that it was clear that trump surrounded himself with folks like rudy giuliani or sidney powell who were clearly loyal to the president but may not have been people that were deep in the constitution or sort of how the levels of power that were working. not that john eastman was a former white house counsel or formal general. what eastman shows was a reported knowledge of the constitution. someone who could help trump get to a place that he really wanted to get to legally, to have a sophistication that was a little different than the other lawyers. what he sort of show was the president had someone who could help push the bounds of the law in ways that were not sort of simply going on fox news or television like rudy giuliani was and spreading falsehoods. this was someone who were trying to get under the hood of government to help the president. i think that's why the eastman disclosures were so concerning to so many people. it shows there were someone willing to help the president who knew just enough to get the president to even more trouble. >> that's really shocking in 2021. >> one of many. >> you have somebody who actually was blessed with opportunities that got a law degree and had connections and decided at the time of america's greatest peril got to say constitutionally since jefferson davis and the confederacy who broke away from the union, from the united states, you have a guy that used those skills to try to commit sedition. to try to overturn an american election saying mr. president, based on my experiences and my knowledge of the law, this is your best chance to turn over and ignore the popular will of the american people, think about that. if you are anybody else who's associated with eastman right now, make no mistake with it. you are associated with a modern day jefferson davis. maybe you are proud of that and maybe you are cheering on the confederacy. i don't think, i don't think so. but you do understand that's a position you put yourself in when you defend a man that was trying to help the president of the united states overturn the popular will of the american people. yes, you know this. so what does it worth to you? john eastman, is this guy that works to overturn the popular will of the american people to up end a peaceful transition that works for a president that was cheering on these people at the capitol? bashing in on american officers? what's that worth to you? why would you even do it. it's nothing. this is political correctness? no, no, this is what it's like, clear mind institute to be a constitutional conservative where you love the constitution and you are a conservative with a small "c" and you believe the very thing that madison wrote about. it's really unbelievable. michael, tell us what you found out. >> what we looked at was the exchange of gifts between the trump administration and foreign countries during the presidency. what we found was perhaps not surprising was a range of problems. problems that ranged from the fact that the saudis gave trump first appeared to be endangered species act protected because they came from white tigers and cheetahs and trump's white house held on that for 3.5 years. after we started asking questions about them last year, the u.s. fish and while life service seized the furs and tested them. they're not endangered species protected. they were fake. there were some other type of fur that had been dyed to look like white tigers and cheetahs. you had trump's political appointees who's been accused at the state department taking high end trump's trust that's given to foreign leaders of the 2020 summit that was cancelled and walking out at the state department gift bags for the g-7 final days of trump administration. two examples of how the basics of government were not functioning normally, i guess? >> normally is exactly. >> michael schmidt, we appreciate your continued reporting on this. thank you so much for coming on this morning. still ahead on "morning joe," one of the members of the january 6th select committee, congressman adam schiff joins the conversation. plus, coronavirus vaccination mandates get outlawed in texas. governor abbott issued an executive order blocking vaccine requirements including for private business. >> you big government marxist, you don't let small businesses run their small businesses? huh, nothing conservative about that. also, more trouble for only same political party doing anything right now. republicans are doing nothing but trying to reek power and pledging to donald trump. they're not even participaing to the governor. democrats are only the one getting it downright now. >> jean, you know on covid cases you are right. covid cases are going down. it also helps if politicians and biden administration had talked about trends that in the summer, cases go up and places like florida, texas, and arizona takes special care there. as we have been saying on the show for some time, cases are going up in the fall and the northeast. the midwest, you will see wisconsin and michigan and pennsylvania, you will see those numbers go up. tell people what's coming and explain why it's coming. it's seasonable at times. there was and i want to read to you quickly. it's a great companion piece to your op-ed piece by your colleague and michael gerston who writes this and caught my eyes. unified republicans control of the house of reelected of donald trump in 2025 is the likely outcome. i am siding with you here and i respectfully disagree. i understand why so many people are shattered especially republicans who can't believe their party has become what their party has become. here is the thing. we are talking about focus groups. i saw another focus groups in swing states, they had nine voters who voted for trump in '16 and he switched to joe biden and they all gave biden a c minus or lower. and they asked do you regret your vote for donald trump? not one of them did. they may think he's too weak on covid. they're not going back to donald trump though. >> you look at the suburban voters in pennsylvania and highly educated voters shifted from republicans to democrats over the past four or five years, they may not like what joe biden has done but they're not going back to donald trump. >> it's what it is. it was not rigged. donald trump just turned off a lot of former republicans in wisconsin and that's why he lost. >> right. >> people remember the chaos and craziness of the trump's years and they remember how it ended and january 6th and as much as the republicans trying to whitewash it, people remember. people know there was a recent poll, i am sorry as i forget whose polls it was but it was asking republicans do you want donald trump to be your candidate in 2024. it was less than half the party. more than half the party says they support trump and they like trump but whatever. less than half say they want donald trump to be the nominee. in a sense, the more trump emerges and becomes sort of story of the republican party, the less joe biden has to feel crushed by transitory poll numbers as adrienne says. donald trump is republicans' best friend and he's so toxic. >> i would guest terry mccauglah he would pay him whatever legally to get him to campaign for him because it would guarantee donald trump's victory. >> i also want to point out one quick thing. you can have a low approval rating of somebody but that does not mean how you are going to vote. but look when it comes to the race, there is a couple of things to keep in mind. this is an election that happens half year, traditionally the party that's in power in washington, democrats have a slight disadvantage going into this election. while we saw virginia solidly blue in 2020, it's sort of a purple state. the campaign is well aware of this. it's a bummer that congress had not passed president biden's agenda at this point. that's something terry made clear that he's frustrated not with biden but congress of its in action. it's something he can run on if his agenda is passed. it will get passed. he's out there talking about what democrats will do without paying its heads on because the agenda is not passed. i think terry is going to prevail. it's going to be a tight race. these are challenging times for the party that's not in power and i do think terry is going to win but it's going to be tough and close. >> adrienne elrod and eugene robinson, we appreciate your optimism. >> i am going to be a red sox fan too if the astros get to that championship series and i am never a red sox fan. >> wow. >> this sounded more like yeah, we'll be ally. >> okay, my enemy is my friend, eugene robinson and adrienne, thank you very much. mika does not want to talk baseball. have you gotten into the morning show this year yet? >> ted lasso, of course, talk about a show that was great and held up the season two and now without giving too much away is setting us up to a great season three. ted lasso, only murders in the building. steve martin, selena gomez, great casting and so much fun. "the morning show," i think there are two or three that's posted. and you got anniston and reese witherspoon. >> that's special. >> so joyful and i love steve martin all my life. martin schwartz, he lights up a screen. he got a magic that few people on the screen have. he lights it up. again, steve martin. selena gomez, who would have thought to cast selena gomez, it's wonderful. top to bottom. you know, mika, she's pretty tough. ted lasso, she's doing this routine a lot, hoping i would not see. a lot of tears shed throughout the entire season of ted lasso. we don't want to giveaway too much. there is a moment though in that season where ted lasso, jason sadukis is reading a letter and he's going from anger to being sad and compassion and understanding. it was all in his face and you just sit there and go, this guy. what a great actor that guy has revealed himself to be over the past couple of years. we are into morning show. the first inning, they may give up two or three runs. >> you are going, what am i watching? what's with all theover reacting. all the over reacting. i have gone around and played the role of executive. hey, you are going to go to school today. i know you are tired but you are loving it. >> you know who he is. >> i go through the whole routine. but just like last season, do i want to watch it? we were late to "the morning show" because everything we heard about it was bad. the first couple episodes. we plowed through. oh my god, and then boom, it was just a great, great show. in fact, my summer was ruined by mika every two hour, "is the morning show out yet?" mika thinks you should work year around for her. she still asks me everyday. what i am saying is season two, man, holy cow, they got into their third episode and nobody is overreacting, the lining and the crew is so strong. >> the rest of the cast. i started slow on that too and something to us being in the business where firefighters can't watch fire fighting shows because that's how it's. once you push through those first couple episodes, it's good, compelling, perhaps it's not completely accurate of what our business is like but entertaining and a great cast. >> what a great actor. and i still when i say, you know what i always say to think about. almost famous. >> yep. >> what a great movie. all right, we'll follow up on these. let's get a bit of a headlines. capitol police whistleblower is coming forward with a scathing letter accusing leadership of mishandling intelligence and not properly responding to the january 6th attack on the capitol. nbc news' halie jackson has the story. >> reporter: a letter written by a capitol police officer describing top officials responsible for the january 6th insurrection. what i have observed was them mostly sitting there blankly looking at the tv screens showing realtime footage of others. a source tells nbc news the two leaders were focused on evacuation of congressional leadership. pitman with lester holt. >> all i think about is protecting the officers. >> it's all the more reason that we have to continue to see an aggressive january 6th, bipartisan commission, pursued the ground troops and what happened that day. >> reporter: the former president rallying in iowa this weekend, hence at another run. >> we are using the same slogan. "make america great again." >> reporter: and clinched to the lie that at the election was stolen, it was not. georgia counted three times with all of it confirmed again that joe biden won. this new dodge from a top gop leader. >> so you think the election was stolen? >> what i said there are states that didn't follow their legislative rules? >> do you think the election is stolen? >> it's not just regulations. >> meanwhile hillary clinton appeared on "the view" yesterday whether she was asked whether president trump brought the country close to a full constitutional crisis on january 6th. listen carefully to her response. >> i think we not only came close to a full constitutional crisis, i think we are still in it. and, that gives me no satisfaction in saying this because i think we are in a very dangerous, continuing high level attack on legitimacy of our government and the election of our president. and, obviously our former president is not only behind it and he incited it and he encouraged it and he continues to do so. you have leaders of the republican party who have willingly gone along as though they're members of a cult, not a political party but a cult. their attack on the election, their refusal to say you know what, we counted these votes. it's over. we are going to move on. they have so much doubt and you combine it with the disinformation network known as facebook. you got a volatile mix. yeah, we are still in the mix of a concerted well-funded effort to undermine american democracy. >> on that subject. let's bring in adam schiff of california, member of the select committee investigating the january 6th attack on the capitol. he's also out with a new book titled "midnight in washingto," it's great to have you with us in new york this morning. as you listen to secretary clinton's remark, it dub tails what you are writing about in this book. as you look at the title "how we almost lost our democrac and still could," what makes you think that? >> the secretary is right. we are in a crisis already. the problem is really at our feet. as a member of the january 6th select committee, i have to acknowledge there could be another violent attack at the capitol. the greater danger is what's going on around the nation. people pushing the former president's big lie and ushering a whole new slate of laws. the president badgering finding 11,000 votes that didn't exist but who had the courage to say no, he's trying to instill in people who'll find those nonexistence votes. that's how democracy is coming to an end. we are at a real point of vigilty right now. >> as you watch the clip of steve scalise or mike pence says it was just a day in january or chuck grassley as he spews these lies and as you say lays the ground work for what may be ahead. how do you explain their behaviors? you work alongside these people and you drafted legislations with some of them and two men and a woman is lining up behind this line of the former president. >> that's the reason why i wrote the book, how do we explain it, how can donald trump remake his political party from his raw image. i can't imagine steve scalise refused to answer. i want to be in congress so i can push the big lie by a president. as i mentioned in the book, it does not always reveals. it reveals a lot of who we are. the power reveals a lot of people who i work with turned out not to care anything they cared about. it reveals something else too. this is why i am still optimistic. it reveals heroes like maria yanovich. we'll get through this, what we do right now in pushing back against this big lie will determine how long it's going to take for america to get through this dark period. >> congressman, we want to talk about the january 6th select committee, you are obviously apart of that. we have seen president trump and his allies trying to be obstructionist about this. the current white house says they're not going to go along with that. you have bannon and others defying subpoenas to appear. what happens? if they don't commit, is there any way you can compel them to? >> steve bannon was called in as a witness during the russia investigation, he came in not under subpoena and then he was under subpoena. when he came in under subpoena, he brought 25 questions written out for him by the white house. he says these are the only questions i am going to answer and i have already answered them and the answer is no. the republicans were more content with that. things were not the same for steve bannon. republicans would not press these subpoenas. they knew they had attorney general and bill barr who would never hold them in contempt. now we have a justice department that's independent. if witnesses do not show up, we'll hold them in criminal contempt in the house. we refer them for prosecution. that'll be a sign that our democracy is recovering. the justice department is holding a principle that no one is above the law. >> we are not surprised of the behavior of donald trump and those of us who knew him and had to deal with him in new york. what surprised us is some appeared to be the kind of push back on donald trump and people not standing up to it. one of the things i think distinguish you is that you fought back. there are a lot of your fellow members of congress on the democratic side seemed to want to go along to get along. don't you think this is a definitive moment that this january 6th committee has to demand these people do not comply. they must face the full weight of the law. the american people would not know that, peopleare not above the law. we can't have a bipartisan conversation where people say i am not going to republican your subpoena. >> you are absolutely right. on this select committee, we are one mind. anyone who does not comply, we'll refer for a criminal prosecution, there needs to be accountability. it's essential for us to bring democracy back from the brink that we once again have our rules applied equally to everyone. one of things that terriies me is we need to make sure the party in power believes in the rule of law. so kevin you know it's the exact opposite of what you told to the press. his answer to me, yeah, i know but you know how it goes. we can't have a leadership in congress that has no commitment to the truth, that shares donald trump's willingness falsify and lie about everything and so this is too is what puts us in peril and all the damage that donald trump did to our democracy, the most corrosive and relentless attack on the troops. >> so many republicans tell you they don't like donald trump and they wish you go in private and they go on tv and fan his big lie. >> we have been through that type of experience as well early on. >> yeah. >> sure. and you know mika, your father, you grew up with your father. when he lived in a different washington where democrats and republicans work hard to understand each other and they would have dinner and go to churches and synagogues and would go out and do things and keep families together. there was a sense of trust. even when i was there in what's called the gingrich's year from '95 to 2001. things got rough. but if you gave somebody your words on the house floor. >> exactly. >> it's so interesting congressman, it was not so long ago that i was there and i can't imagine a member of congress having a private conversation with me and going around and he's characterizing it in public that would not happen. when i was in congress, they considered me at time things have changed a lot with what the republican party stands for now. they considered me to be a red hot small government conservative. i go talk to democrats all the time. we would disagree strongly. we would sit there with conversations and all my years there. i fear maybe too common. how in the world can you work with people when you can't judge them to not mischaracterize the conversation. >> it was such a shock to me. people like kevin mccarthy were made for this moment. it really put our democracy on such edge because one of the painful lessons is the impeachment trial, there was nothing wrong with impeachment provision or the drafting of our constitution, we don't need to change the threshold for impeachment or anything like that. if those are not animated by people who believe what's right and wrong or telling the truth then none of it works. at the same time we can given the despair here of that luxury. at the same time when i listen to mit romney explained why he was willing to convict and he had grandchildren and children to answer to. there are people of virtue who justify the faiths our founders have. we can control our own destiny. >> everyone should read it and it's chilling. many at the capitol that day serving our country went through similar experiences, they're gut-wrenching and frightening. you are going to have people who'll not respond to subpoenas, who'll say no. can you guarantee that the job will be done to make sure to guarantee this will never happen again. >> i can guarantee you that we will do everything humanly possible among those of us in the committee. there is no daylight. we are determined to get to the truth and what led up to january 6th and the president's role and everyone else inl including mem of congress. we'll do whatever it takes to get there. we have to depend on our institutions like the department of justice doing their part. we'll not rest until we do everything possible to prevent this from ever happening again. the trauma of that day and many respects for me was realizing how our democracy looked to the rest of the world. but, also that while all the people who were climbing outside the capitol and beating officers really believed the big lie? it was so tragic for my perspective is the insurrectionists in the chambers wearing suits and ties who understood it was a big lie and still -- there were still back at it trying to overturn the democratic election, trying to undermine our democracy as if nothing had happened. that's unforgivable in so many ways. january 6th changed a lot of things in america but it also changed how we look at our colleagues and congress and how we look at them still. when people like steve scalise can't say the obvious that at the election was not stolen because they live in such fear of donald trump. you see how a democracy is put at risk when ordinary people don't live up to their very extraordinary oath of office. >> the book is "midnight in washington: how we does it have anything to do with how the biden administration is polling? is the democratic party overall giving you the platform to run a successful campaign? >> well, that's a good question. and it's been in the press, there are headwinds coming out and i'm hopeful we'll get an infrastructure done very quickly. i have been very consistent. they need to do their job. it's literally billions and billions of road and bridge work for us in virginia. but literally, mika, about virginia and our future. people are excited. i'll make some news for you today. we've got on friday the first lady, jill biden is coming. on saturday president obama is coming to richmond, virginia. and on sunday we're going to have stacey abrams in norfolk doing our souls to the polls. so you've got some news out there. but there's going to be a lot of excitement. in fact the both of you ought to come to virginia this weekend. we're going to get it going. but the stakes are so huge. if people don't understand, they come out in presidential years but they have to come out in this off year because literally their lives depend on it. people were very happy when i was governor, 200,000 new jobs, personal welcome went up 14% the last time i was governor. glenn youngkin doesn't believe in medicaid expansion. really, 550,000 people have life-saving care today. the stakes could not be greater. and let me just say this also, this is big for donald trump. he's endorsed youngkin five times. this gets trump off the mat, and i think this kicks off his 2024. we can't let it happen. glenn youngkin said so much of the reason i'm running is because of donald trump, and he said that, mika, after the january 6th insurrection. i've got to tell you, this is so bothersome to me. the threat of democracy and what happened to our country, how could you possibly support these folks today? >> yeah, you know, terry you said the races were always close but sometimes they're not close. in '17, northam won big, which was really an indicator of what would happen in '18. bob mcdonald won a big victory in 2009, which really showed americans what was going to happen the next year when the tea party swept in. so just kind of ask, in fact, is the fact joe biden's poll numbers collapsed over the last month, the fact swing voters are disillusioned where the democrats are right now, are we looking at headwinds that are going to make your race much tougher and predict a huge republican year next year? >> well, that's not going to happen because i'm going to win this year. we're going to get the folks out to vote. i do believe people are looking at washington for getting things done. i mean, let's be honest, we have the house, white house and senate. we passed the infrastructure bill 69 votes 2 months ago, and i think people are rightfully asking the question, let's get this done in the u.s. house. they want to see results. that's why i was a successful governor. i governed in a bipartisan way. in fact, many republicans have endorsed me. bill kristol endorsed me. he said terry was a great governor, we had a lot of jobs. and two, we can't have a trump wannabee in the office again. we have $14 trillion in the american rescue plan. virginians should know we got $3 billion for our education system in virginia, $70 million for vaccinations. i will say this, i'm for requiring doctors and nurses and teachers and everybody at work to be vaccinated. my opponent is an anti-vaxxer. he goes on right wing radio and literally says, quote, if you don't want to take it, don't take it. quote, there are many good reasons not to be vaccinated. he told college students if you don't want to get it, just fill out an exemption for whatever reason. can you imagine? someone's getting cancer treatments, getting chemotherapy or radiation, they are already immunocompromised and he doesn't believe that nurse should have a vaccination? i've got to tell you, i think that's disqualifying. he's forcing this. all masks come off day one if he's elected and vaccination requirements go away for our teachers. think if you're a parent and you have a 6-year-old or 7-year-old going to first grade, he's going to force you to send your child to a school where the teacher is not vaccinated and not wearing a mask. that to me is disqualifying. but that's why people got to get out and vote. i rolled out a whole plan the other day to help women, 4.5 million lost their job in virginia. if you work and you're making $7.25 minimum wage, you have to work 48 weeks to pay for one child and childcare. those are the big issues i want to fix. i'm not running for trump, i'm running for virginians. >> rev? >> terry, al sharpton. i wanted to ask you about this. certainly people you know that i work with at the action network in virginia talk about how you did as governor before. but isn't this turnout really about if they do not come out and vote for you, it is really a vote for donald trump? the pundits will say if your opponent wins, that this is the comeback of donald trump. and if anybody in virginia is for trump or gets trump, they better come and cast their vote this time. isn't despite the fact you've certainly laid out policies and you've certainly had a record of governing, which you did for that state, but isn't this really about whether you want to go back to trump or go forward with an agenda? >> you hit it right on the head, rev. i couldn't say it any better. if i were not to win this, this would be, as i say, the comeback of donald trump. this would lift him off the mat. he would use this as a launchpad to campaign in 2022 and set him up in 2024. glenn youngkin has been endorsed now by donald trump five times, five times. and for eight months glenn youngkin had one policy plan, election integrity. he said the other day after trump talked about voting machines, what did glenn youngkin say a couple days ago, let's audit virginia's machines. so they're all the same. i couldn't agree with you more. that's why democrats and independents, as i say, a couple dozen rops endorsed me the other day because i get things done, but if we don't win this thing, this is donald trump's comeback. people need to wake up. i know we have elections every year in virginia and people get tired but this is very important. and if we don't vote for me, i can tell you, women should understand that abortions will be outlawed in virginia. we will have the texas law here. think of this, doctors -- i mean, they're going to go and try to put doctors in jail. women's lives will be put at risk. the other thing with glenn youngkin, he's against a woman's right to choose, he's against day marriage. i can tell you right now that all of those big projects, 1,100 economic developments, all of the huge companies i helped bring in, amazon, google, facebook, microsoft, none of those businesses would have come to virginia if we had glenn youngkin as governor. they're not coming to a state that discriminates against anybody. rev, i have such strong support in the black community as you know. i restored more voting rights than any governor in u.s. history and went through a legal battle. today in virginia 275,000 people could vote that could not vote eight years ago when i ran for governor. i'm about lifting people up. glenn youngkin's campaign has been just like trump, divide, divide, divide. he talks about critical race theory, he talks about having these parents' meetings on critical race theory. it really bothers me because it is a racist dog whistle. we don't teach critical race theory in virginia and all he's doing is getting trump and parents fighting parents, using children as political pawns. i hate that. i'm a uniter. i will work with anybody as governor. i don't care your party, i'm going to lift you up. but i'll tell you this, i will be a brick wall as i was before. they tried to shut the 16 women's clinics down, i stopped that, replaced the board of health and vetoed every bill to defund planned parenthood. i will be a brick wall for women's rights here in virginia. glenn youngkin will put women's lives in danger. doctors will go to jail. this is real now. for 50 years we thought the supreme court would protect. now donald trump's supreme court will allow abortions to be made illegal. so virginians understand, your future is at stake here. this election is so important. that's why president obama is coming saturday, stacey abrams sunday and first lady coming friday. people understand the stakes of this election. you're right on the mark, this is donald trump's comeback. >> governor, good morning, it's jonathan lemire. you in recent days pretty bluntly called for democrats to get this infrastructure deal done, to get it through the house, to give you something you could run on. early voting began this weekend, it's not going to get done by then. even november 2, i think there's real doubt everything will get done the way it's paired with the reconciliation package, which still could take weeks, if not months, to get across the finish line. should they set straw apart and do just infrastructure now? and if they don't do that before november 2, how harmful is that to your chances? >> listen, i want to get it done not only as a candidate for governor but i want to get it done for the sake of all virginia residents. it's a trillion dollars on infrastructure. i have roads and bridges we desperately need to be fixed. i love what we have on human infrastructure on childcare, i just talked about those issues, elderly issues. elderly care. family medical leave. i'm for family medical leave. i want to lift people up. so, this is important to us here in virginia to get these two bills done. and i guess what frustrates me when i was governor i got everybody in the room. democrats, republicans, the governors conference room. said, okay. what do we need? let's get this done. you know what, i got 70% plus of my bills passed with the republican legislature. i'm begging folks on capitol hill. quit talking to the press all day. wit chitchatting around. get in a room, people's lives are depending on it. get in a room and negotiate. that's what's important for america and virginia residents. i want this passed asap. it's critical for the future of out country. >> it is interesting that we're having these debates in front of cameras instead of going into the democratic caucus room and talking through this. the office isn't talking through this. they have no responsibility to give the media more story be about democrats and the headlines they want to run. you didn't negotiate when you were in congress through press releases? >> you can't do that. >> no, i did not. other means. terry, i had a friend ask me a couple days ago if you were having a tighter race than expected because you're trying to run for governor again in the state, where, you run for one term, and then you're out. you can run for another term if you want. >> yeah. yeah. >> and i started looking through virginia's history, i haven't seen another governor that's actually come back and run again. and successfully do what you're trying to do now. so, the first question is, has anybody ever done that before? and the second question -- >> yeah. >> -- is the fact that it's so rare, do you think you may have a bit of a backlash like michael bloomberg had when he tried to seek that third term as mayor of new york city. >> is it has happened before. mills goodwin ran as a democrat and came back eight years later as a republican. that's the only time it's happened. i'm the first democratic nominee ever to be nominated twice as governor. nobody leaned in the black and brown community, the way you did on your pardons and restoration rights. i ban the confederate flag. and personal income went up 14%. unemployment dropped in every city and county. so, i had leaders in the house and senate. i had leadership of the black caucus. all come to me and said covid has been brutal. we need you back. listen, i ran in a big primary. we had five people in the primary, as you know, i won every city and county that's the first time any democrat or republican has done that in 80 years. there's a lot of excitement and support. they needed us back. i'm the guy -- you know what i'm able to do, raise teacher pay above the national average for the first time after at-risk 3 and 4-year-olds, i'm going to get them pre-k. i'm going to get a second 23, start our own marketplace. i'm going to bring health care premiums cost and going after the drug companies and going to bring the drug prices down. this is a time with covid, we've seen inequities, 44% of small businesses closed in this country. i've got more energy today than the day i was born. i am going to take this state to a level you've never seen before. we are going to take off like a booster rocket. you folks are all coming to virginia. i'll tell you, i'm excited. i'm excited thinking about the opportunities. helping people, lifting people up. i've got to keep my house and the attorney general, i'm telling you, folks, you want action, you come to virginia. we're going to be the model for getting the country out of covid crisis. it's a booming economy. that's just warming up. i'm going to the next level. >> okay. okay. >> it's intoxicating, virginia democratic gubernatorial candidate terry mcauliffe, thank you. >> mika, time to move to virginia. >> wow, do you hear that? >> what president obama said what terry said is actually in richmond on october 2nd. also a note, we're in contact with republican glenn younkins, we hope to schedule him before the election as well. there's also a very interesting race for the state's lieutenant governor, and we will feature the top candidates before that election. you there go. we'll be right back. keep it right here on "morning joe." joe. your eyes. beautiful on the outside, but if you have diabetes, there can be some not-so-pretty stuff going on, on the inside. it's true, if you have diabetes, you know high blood sugar is the root of the problem. but that excess sugar can cause the blood vessels to be seriously damaged. and when that happens, this could happen, vision loss or even blindness. that's right, diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness for adults in the u.s. but even though you can't see it, there is something you can do about it. remember this: now is the time to get your eyes checked. eye care is an incredibly important part of your long-term diabetes management. see a path forward with actions and treatments that may help your eyes— and protect against vision loss. just say to yourself, “now eye see.” then—go see an eye care specialist. visit noweyesee.com to get the facts about diabetes, your eyes, and what you can do next—to take control of your sight. brought to you by regeneron. shingles?
