katty kay is with us this morning. joe, you got the end of this block to talk about the red sox. >> oh. you got up way too late last night so we are starting on time this morning. there were a number of developments since we left you on friday with the investigation into the january 6th attack of the capitol. the biden white house rejected a request by former president trump to use executive privilege to withhold documents under federal law the current president has the power to wave executive privilege claims by past presidents. in a letter to the national archives obtained by nbc news, white house council writes, president biden has determined that an assertion of executive privilege is not in the best interests of the united states. and therefore it's not justified to as to any of the documents, the white house now is authorizing the national archives to turnover an initial batch of documents covering trump's actions on january 6th including his rally at the ellipse. mr. trump issued a lengthy statement criticizing democrats and the probe. he formally asserted privilege with the national archives over the approximately 40 documents being sent to the committee and any others in the future. white house officials told nbc news on friday they'll reiterate the waver of privilege which trump will challenge in court. let's bring in our correspondent at politico, bethany swan. >> on the latest along with the news that mika just read, what are we looking for over the next week or two? >> we are keeping an eye on whether trump follows through the threat he made and sues the archives to block them. on the one hand, trump has been explicit in multiple communications he sent you in saying he'll do everything he can to protect his executive privilege. on the other hand, sometimes trump does not do what he says he's going to do. so we have to bear in mind in that case. trump historically had a hard time building good lawyer teams now more than ever. for all the obvious reasons and in addition to all the obvious reasons because he has a history of not paying his lawyers. there is a bunch of lawyers out there who's doing pro bono work. >> trump only has a limited amount of time to bring a lawsuit if he decides to bring one. at some point the national archives are going to send the materials over the select committee. that's the ball game. that's the big pressing question for the next week or two. does trump follow through and bring this litigation and how do things proceed from there. the other question is how does the january 6th elect committee tries to enforce its subpoenas where trump is telling witnesses not to cooperate because of this claim of executive privilege that's made. those are the two pressing immediate issues. >> and of course the house minority leader donald trump calls steve, kevin mccartney, congress does not have the authority to ask for records pertaining into the investigation of the january 6th attack. listen. >> this is a select committee that's not a bipartisan committee for the first time in history nancy pelosi picked who could be on this committee. what they're trying to do is missing the two main points. why were we so ill prepared on january 6th and how do we make sure we will never be in this position again. congress does not have the right to go after mine or your phone records. the supreme court has made this ruling. it's interesting how far they want to control and where they want to go. >> it's a really good thing, you can't get arrested for washington, d.c. for stupidity. for that clip, dave, first of all, i know -- is not bipartisan because mitch mcconnell and the republicans killed the bipartisan bicameral investigation. if you kill a bipartisan of january 6th investigation. well, good luck complaining about it later. and secondly saying that congress can't subpoena by phone records or your records or his phone records is prosperous. they do it all the time. >> congress has subpoena powers and subpoenas are not optional. if january 6th committee wants to refer non compliance of the full house. those individuals who defy subpoenas can't be prosecuted under contempt of congress which will get you between one month and jail in a year and up to $100,000 fine if you are talking about serious stuff. if you want low-hanging fruit, joe, go after steve bannon first. he stopped working for the administration in august of 2017. any claims of executive privilege, after all he's not a lawyer, that would fall flat and laugh out of court. >> yeah. hey, jonathan. it would be one thing if donald trump had a lackey working for him at the justice department but he does not. you got a professional merrick garland running the justice department. a lot of claims are falling on deaf ears. what can we expect coming out of this request? >> the current white house made clear that they are not incline to giving president trump any assistance on this. this seems to be the exception. j this needs to be something that's thoroughly investigated. they ordered that bipartisan commission that minority leader mcconnell killed and now are backing the select committee. there is seemingly not going to be much traction to this president's request, joe. the politics are going to play out. will these former aides show up. how can they defy us? they would never do these things. that's different now. he's not the president anymore. this is going to be a significant political issue even as the former president continues to find is unfounded claim of election fraud and as he continues to return to the political stage. >> you know, katty, obviously claims executive privilege are respected to one to another, are domestic policymaking, there is an iron-dome of sorts around that. and one justice department is going usually follow along and follow what the justice department in the past administration have ruled. but in this case, you are talking about conspiracy to commit sedition, you are talking about a riot that the white house may have known about beforehand, apparently did know about beforehand and did very little to discourage and may even encourage for that reason. does it seem unlikely at best this justice department is going to do, he thinks help donald trump covers up possible sedition conspiracy. >> this is a useful reminder of what executive privilege is there for. it's not there to protect the individuals who was president or is president. it's there to protect the republic, to protect the united states of america. and, it's deemed that the person who has the best opinion or the pest possibility of having the right opinion whether something is good for the public, i think you are right, it's unlikely that this justice department and this white house is going to do anything and going after their way to protect donald trump over protecting the rights of the republic. betsy, if you look at the opinion polling, there is some sense of urgency here. the further we get from january 6th, the more republicans certainly feel not that important to fine and prosecute, how does that sense public opinion shifting away from the sense of urgency against this investigation play into the legal factors and how this rolls next. the other two tracks the white house and congress need to keep an eye on? >> the select committee feels a lot of time pressure in this case in part of public opinion polls. as the date for january 6th proceeds, republican efforts try to reshift or paper over or whitewash the course of that day are continuing and in some ways becoming more effective with republican base. the other sort of time pressure is the fact that democrats on capitol hill who i speak to are concerned they're going to lose control of the house in the midterms. they feel they need to get this whole thing done before the midterm election happens. if the -- there is a decent chance they won't get nearly of the level of documents they want. it takes years. so a challenge for the select committee right now is do they try to get the national archives to speed up the typical timeline by which they turn over documents or do they use the thread of prosecution from doj to get these witnesses who have been defiant to come through and testify. >> one other thing i think is worth knowing is mark meadows who is the one that's most persuasive, he was chief of staff to the president on january 6th, he's engaing with the select committee. the fact that he's engaging, he's communicating with these investigators signaling he's not going to stiff-arm them. i think it kind of tells you what you need to know about the leverage that this committee has going forward and the likelihood they'll get actual serious inside the room and new on the record detail relating to what happened that day. >> dave, we'll have the biggest challenge, good luck with that. i don't think he'll be able to get it, bannon. let's talk about meadows and patel. these are three people again that were in the white house when the riots were going on when these acts of sedition were going on. attempts to stop the constitutional counting of the electoral votes. so again, i go back to the question, what justice department is going to extend any privilege to a group of people who were inside a room where sedition against the united states of america may have been taken place. >> yeah, they may try to executive privilege as a defend. it's not a get out of jail free-card and it does not apply here. it has to be invoked by the current president and not the former one. there is some wiggle room because this area of law is not extensively litigated. i think it will be a long shot. a long shot. on the other hand, bannon does not have any right to make that claim. we'll see what happens. the bigger question here, joe, is not whether the department of justice can prosecute these individuals for contempt of congress to defy the subpoenas. the question is whether they will. he's shown that he may not be as aggressive or fearless as we need during this time. we shall see. >> thank you both very much for being on this morning. the big lie is alive and well among republican leadership. yesterday steve scalise repeatedly refused to say the 2020 election was not stolen when pressed by chris wallace on fox news on sunday. >> do you think the 2020 election was stolen from donald trump? >> chris, i have been clear from the beginning. if you look at the number, states did not follow their state's past laws that governs for the president. >> do you think the election is stolen? >> last time, i promise. do you think the election is stolen or not? >> it's not just regulations, it's the states that did not follow law sets. when you see georgia is cleaning up their mess and people calling it jim crow law, that's a flat out lie. >> it's unbelievable. it's really unbelievable. >> look at liz cheney's respond. >> that's really sleazy, it's cynical and dispecable, it's deplorable. >> still lying and spreading lies for your constituents for the american people about what happened in last year's election is deplorable. when you have trump's justices across the united states saying there is no fraud and the supreme court of the united states yes, in pennsylvania, the supreme court let overrode what the states legislatures did. it's not going to change the outcome of the election said aledo in thomas. let's take a look at it because it may have influence future elections. >> how about common sense. he knows better? >> of course. >> this had nothing to do with him lacking common sense. it had everything to do with republicans lacking common decency, who understands a peaceful transition is the most decent thing we can do and our men and women fought for and died for through the years. it does not work if you only respect elections when your side wins. that's what they do in communist countries. that's what they do in countries, hey, steve scalise, that's not what they do here. go back and i think you need to go back take some civic classes. maybe they got a civic class where they live in a community college and relearn civics. this is absolutely -- despicable a year later. >> so liz cheney responded to the scalise's comment in a tweet that reads in part, perpetuating the big lie is an attack on the core of our constitution republic. >> it attacks katty kay, the core of democracy which is again it depends on men and women of good faith on both sides accepting election results even when it does not go your way. the judges, all the trump's judges and most elected leaders in the republican party are now admitting yes, donald trump won. here we have the number two house republicans, lying to his constituents and the american people. not being able to say joe biden was elected president. >> you had a couple of real indicators over the course of this weekend. you had scalise refusing repeatedly, even after court after court around the country has ruled indeed he won the election. then you have chuck grassley on saturday night standing alongside donald trump effectively endorsing donald trump and having himself after january 6th of donald trump's behavior around skran january 6th and the insurrection was a terrible thing. this weekend was a real turning point where the republican party feels donald trump is and donald trump's chances of running again and winning the nomination again and their own fear in standing up. it's impossible to believe that scalise after all of these court cases really believes the election was stolen. the only reason he's doing it is to carry favors with donald trump and his supporters. >> it's such political day-trading with a party helicoptering to shrink because of donald trump. you look around and see how well the republicans did across the nation with the 2020 election even though they lost again in the house. they did much better in the house and state legislatures than anybody would have thought they would have done. he offended suburban voters and educated voters. we had riots launched against the united states, sponsored by donald trump and brought to thank you by donald trump. a man who refused to call them off while they were going on. anyway, a lot of controversies there. i am not so sure jonathan lemire there is more controversy there than there was in fenway last night. let's get to the highlights. let's talk through this. >> the stakes were just as high, our future of democracy in the balance of the after math at fenway park last night. here is the play. you can see this. it bounces off and goes into the bullpen. if that ball stayed in the field, the runner would score. and it's automatic two bases and the umpire does not have the discretion. the mlb after the game says the umpire delivered it correctly and what happened then? the race should have the league at the top of the 13th, there he is. christian vasquez, somehow and some way, the red sox are leading the series. they got a chance to finish this today. i may note, today is marathon day in boston. it was postponed because of the pandemic. that's happening today. this will be the day to do it to finish the series. the only problem, i have no idea who's pitching. >> yeah, they got him out there. it takes 12 hours to loosen him up. for people who want to know about what happened last night, the ball bounces off the player, it goes out and a ground rule double because it hits the ground. some of us remember what happened to jose consecu, the ground ball hits the top of his ball and boinks. >> if a ball hits player before a player has control of the ball and at the top of his cranium is not control of the ball and goes over the fence. that's a homer. i am sure they'll be talking about as the rule changes over the year. in the offseason but i am not exactly sure how you change that rule if you are a tampa fan. you go to feel like you are ripped off at the same time. i don't know how exactly they adjust that rule because of all the intended consequences. some other games, the white sox took it to the astros. >> yeah, they did. they had dropped the first two games of the series and fell behind early last night and came storming back. houston still have two games to one. the white sox, they got good team, they can really hit. we could see game five there as well if chicago can pull it off. we know as much as race fans understandably or upset of the rule call. they got the beneficiary, they were the beneficiary of an unusual rule there. >> we have pivotal game threes in both of the national league series braves and brewers. >> yeah, those series in the national league is 1-1 and the brewers locked up with one and same with the dodgers and the giants. those are two teams of 215 wins between them, close to 215 wins between them. and also, very interesting, alex was just reminding me about astros last night. very curious indeed they were not hitting pitches in chicago that they were easily to hit in their home field. i had add good friend of mine about a decade ago. i am not saying they cheat at home, he was showing me statistics about how they do so much better at home and seemed to pick up pitches at home. after all of the scandal and after all the chaos of what happened in those years. here we are on the other side of it and we are still hearing from baseball players before the mlb investigations they are still doing something so the white sox claims to get an advantage. >> yeah, i think whether they are or not, i applaud for the white sox to bring it up. this hangs over the astros. it's their own fault. they did it. they were busted for doing so. there are a lot of dodgers fans who believe the 2017 world series were stolen from them because the astros were found to be cheating during that season and their yankees fans feel the same way. they get better at home. they decidedly do. whether they cheated or not, the white house bringing it up right now adds the mix and destruction can only be to their benefit going forward and how the astros hit today. >> so, it's also marathon season. it's fair enough to say there is chicago over the weekend. jonathan lemire, was this with you being a track star. were there pictures? >> whoa! what's going on here? >> where is this? >> look at the quads on that guy? >> yeah, that's marathon from homeland. look at that. >> whoo, that guy looks good. >> i can't get that fast anymore. i never ran a marathon and i never ran more than three or four miles but i was in high school. i ran track. a bit of a sprinter and my may say my senior years, i finished as the second fastest man in senior year. >> yeah, that's obviously a sad year for massachusetts' track and field. >> it's a complete lack of interests in track. he came in second. >> okay, i am glad to see so many runners. >> i am thinking about running. >> yeah, i am not. >> is willie training for the new york marathon? >> i think he is. >> wow. >> willie is running a marathon this year. >> willie is running the new york marathon. >> come on y'all. >> we have to come out there and cheer them on. i guess it's too late. still ahead on "morning joe," republican members of the january 6th select committee, adam kinzinger is our guest this morning. plus, thousands of travelers stranded around the country after southwest airlines cancelled nearly 2,000 flights over the weekend. what is behind those grounded flights and a look at the latest project from a pair of hollywood veterans. ron and clint howard is joining us. you are watching "morning joe ", we'll be right back. are they going to be compelled to testify? >> well, the real question, mika, what does it mean to be compelled? will this house committee hold these people? congress rarely goes that far trying to have criminal or civil prosecutions or find the last well upon of congresses' holster which is jail time. it takes a lot of steps to do that inside the house but it's it's possible. it has not been done in a long time. the real question is if democracy is on the brink if so many people in both parties and especially on the democratic side, how far will they go to pursue answers? >> well, the risk is great and constitutional crisis is upon us. i remember you had former senator on in the spring of 2020. we predicted that trump was going to overturn the election by having state legislatures propose of electors and many thought it sounded crazy at the time. that's exactly what he did. the book "peril" laid it out chapter and verse that was the strategy. now we have state legislatures putting in place to perfect that whole strategy to be able to push away the few people who stood away from that coup attempt last time. we are facing something that's horrifying. what's also troubling is it does not look like democrats are going to create exceptions of the filibuster rule. you got to ask the question what can we do about it? the u.n. used to do this stuff but does not do it anymore. a presidential commission would really shine the kind of spotlight we need on it. biden could create and i don't think if it's going to be viewed above the fray and fair that he can actually appoint those presidential commissioners but what i proposed that two presidents -- one being george w. bush who's above the fray of the trumpian nonsense and the other is jimmy carter. i am sure he learned a lot when it came through for an election. this maybe enough to have a consistent light on this to rally the majority of americans to understand we really are facing a possible coup attempt next time and something got to be shined here to make sure it does note happen. >> tom, it's katty kay here. i guess it's not new election processes being weaponized in politics and other countries around the world. people try to push the boundaries as much as they can to make the elections going in their own favor. what's the one thing that really concerns you of what's happening in the legislation that texas is trying to pass at the moment? what is the single thing? is it the ability of state legislatures overturn? what was the results? >> well, you nailed it. it's the ability for state's legislatures to step in and insert themselves in the counting and certifying process and if they want to adhere or rely of election fraud and put in their own slate of electors to create an issue that would throw in the election of the house of representatives. the republicans or trump if he runs again would win and that is hugely problematic and what's further problematic is it looks like the supreme court even though the court protected us last time if nonsense. it looks like the supreme court has enough justices who adhere to this notion that state legislatures do have the power to decide who their electors are. the only way we'll combat this is just have massive citizen protests that we'll not allow an election to be stolen. there are presidential commission could galvanize that kind of public sediment especially if it was costructed of a powerful statement that we'll have people of great integrity here. finding republicans of great integrity is going to be a difficult thing these days. >> all right, tom rogers, thank you very much. you can read more of tom's new piece online for news week. appreciate it. still ahead -- >> let me just say and i think more specifically finding people who supports donald trump, those trump republicans. it's going to be hard to find people with election and integrity that tom was talking about there. democrats with integrity, you look though, those people blindly follow donald trump and the people who are trying to change laws so state legislatures can rip power away from election leaders. that's a real ongoing concern and one of the great concerns that they wanted to take power away from. people supported donald trump in 2016 and 2020 but would not rig the election for them after the election. their solution is take their power away from them. yeah, those people really hard to believe they'll have any integrity when it comes to running free and fair elections. so just wanted to differentiate there. still ahead on "morning joe," charges of espionage, nuclear secrets and a peanut butter sandwich. stephanie gosk will explain for us how all those are connected? >> we're keeping an eye on whether trump follows through on the threat he's made and sues the national archives to block them from sharing materials with the congressional committee investigating january 6th. on the one hand, trump has been explicit in multiple communications he sent out that i reviewed in saying he's going to do everything he possibly can to, in his words, protect executive privilege. on the other hand, sometimes trump doesn't do what he says he's going to do. we have to bear that in mind. and additional, trump has had a hard time building bad lawyer genes, now more than ever, because for all the obvious reasons and in addition to the obvious reasons, because he has a history of not paying his lawyers. there aren't a bunch of talented lawyers who want to do pro bono work for a purported billionaire who is trying to keep secret his involvement or activity during a massive attack on the capitol. trump only has a limited amount of time to bring any lawsuit if he decides to bring one. at some point the national archives are going to send these materials over to the select committee, and then that's the ball game. so that's the big pressing question for the next week or two. does trump follow through and actually bring this litigation and then how do things proceed from there? of course, the other question is how does the january 6th select committee try to enforce its subpoenas, subpoenas in this case where trump is telling witnesses not to cooperate because of this claim of executive privilege that he's made. those are the two pressing immediate issues. >> and, of course, the white house minority leader that donald trump calls steve, kevin mccarthy claims congress doesn't have the authority to ask for his -- pertaining into the investigation into the january 6th attack. it's very novel, actually. listen. >> this is a select committee that is not a bipartisan committee. for the first time in history, nancy pelosi picked who could be on this committee. and what they're trying to do, they're missing the two main points. why were we so ill-prepared on january 6th, and how do we make sure we're never in this position again? >> if you're all -- >> he didn't. >> if you're all-democrat government drifts into another crisis. >> adam, this is for me. this is just -- an owned goal by mitch mcconnell and the republican party, and of course, mitch is about as smart in politics as anybody we've seen in washington d.c. loving or not loving. calling him cynical or call him crafty, this guys knows what he's doing. he can always see around corners. he does what it takes to win. that's why republicans like him and democrats do not. this is a cell phone. because when mitch had a republican in the white house, he said of course we're willing to pass the debt ceiling. of course we're going to raise the debt limit. to not do so would be irresponsible, because, of course, if you don't, if you default on american's debt, you wreck the economy. you destroy americans' retirement accounts and help communist china. what could help communist china more than giving them a propaganda win where they can say the united states is defaulting on their debt. they're dysfunctional. and now mitch is saying, not only are we not going to do what we've always done and vote to increase the debt limit so we don't help communist china. we're going to block democrats from being able to vote. to raise the debt limit so we don't destroy retirements and don't help communist china. you voted to raise the debt limit. tell us why. and talk about how -- it's hard to be shocked by anything, but why would mitt romney vote to block -- a guy i respect and love, but why would mitt romney vote to block the senate from raising the debt limit so retirement accounts won't be destroyed in america and communist china won't gain this massive advantage over the united states? >> well, look, you're right. i can't answer for mitt and stuff on voting -- look, we were still about two weeks -- i voted -- i was the only republican to vote to raise it. we were still a couple weeks out. i think what happens is -- because this happen every time, every time we come up to the debt limit. there's back and forth, try to extract. it's probably okay politics in terms of the politics only. but in terms of the future of the country, this is something we've got to get rid of having to deal with all the time. whether we get rid of the debt ceiling or whether we all have a gentleman's agreement to quit police politicizing it. now that we're 30 trillion in debt, the further in debt we go, the more important it is for us to raise the debt limit not just particularly on time but early, because the only reason we don't have a debt crisis is because the world trust and true faith and credit of that debt. the second that starts getting shaky and now we're $30 trillion in debt with no tax increases or measures to get us out of that, that's when the stuff that paul ryan talked about, the debt cliff, that's when it's triggered. as long as we keep people believing in the full faith and credit of the united states, we won't have that immediate debt crisis. >> let me ask you. how much would it damage the united states? how much would it help communist china if mitt romney said no, we're not going to let the senate vote to raise the debt ceiling? if susan collins said no, we're not going to let the senate vote to raise the debt ceiling? if ben sass, if lisa murkowski and others that people considered to be rational, moderate republicans, what would be the impact if they voted, again, not to raise the debt limit, but voted to block responsible democrats from raising the debt limit? how much of a win would that be for communist china? how bad would that be for america's reputation across the globe? and how much would mitt romney be helping xi and helping communist leaders by doing that? >> well, look, if those people did that, a lot. the reality is this. every one of those you mentioned, and i know that you know, a lot of the times when these reasonable republicans do something republican, people get upset, but in this case, they're not going to let that happen. and i think the fact that they've voted against it shows you there's time on that, and there's politics being played. i'm not saying that's what they should do or that's right. i'm saying they're not going to allow that to be breeched because they're great senators that believe in this country and have put a lot on the line to do that. i think the debt limit is a construct we need to get rid of this. this is playing your credit card bills. if i get a credit card bill and guy this is for $10,000, i need to save $10,000 this year, i'm going to throw this bill away. that's not how you do it. that will help you not short-term, and then everything collapses. that's what the debt limit is. the spending decisions are the areas where we can interdict, and look, it's just -- we are stuck in this how do we win the next election? the next election is the most important thing, and meanwhile we're watching our democracy slip through our fingers because we don't want to tell people the truth. >> and the thing is, i'm very helpful. they are -- they have been reasonable and responsible many times throughout their careers and i'm hopeful they won't help communist china. i'm hopeful, again, if they don't want to vote to raise the debt limit, i understand under. it's a vote that i took, i think, when i was in congress. it's more of a, sort of a he message that you're sending. but, in this case, they are voting to block the vote and that just helps communist china and destroys he at the end of the day, that just destroys america's retirement accounts. i hope they will continue to be responsible and do the right thing. congress mapp, thank you for all you do. always great to have you here. thanks so much. >> up next, ron and clint howard both got an early start in show biz and the brothers are out with a look how their careers came about with a healthy the influence from family every step-of the way. we'll speak with them next on "morning joe". to make my vision a reality my varilux progressive lenses provide seamlessly transition from near to far. with every detail in sharp focus. that's seeing no limits. varilux lenses by essilor. "the boys" is also a tribute to our mom because that's what she called us. >> clint, talk about your childhood. you guys, of course, it's all you ever knew. you thought you had a normal childhood. whoa. wait a second. there was nothing normal about this. talk about the childhood. that realization and also just the challenges that it posed for both you guys as you went through your lives. >> well, i had a huge advantage. being the little brother of ron, ron is just absolutely just a top notch big brother. he always has been and he continues to be. but i had a great example. i mean dad was our mentor, but ron was this great dude to look up to and he helped me navigate. i mean it was -- i got to watch him do some wonderful the things and i followed along. >> it did help clint along the way to see me cope with public school, kids at school, some of the hazing and frustrations that went along with that. it was kind of always like ice water in your face because the environment at work was such a joy. from early days, it was creative, welcoming. you go out in the real world and sometimes it would be, you know, things would be a little tough. >> he got punched out a few times. >> so, ron, and then clint, talk about your dad and what he did to keep your feet on the ground in the high moments and low moments. what made the difference? why your all still here together talking to us today. that's a hell of an achievement, by the way, considering your background, how you grew up. >> well, the book is, in a way, as we were working on it, we began to feel it's almost like a parenting book. there's an element of this. it wasn't our intention. they made so many great decisions along the way in their own kind of unorthodox way. because my dad was an actor and also a writer, he never saw glamour in any of this. what he saw was an opportunity. really kind of a learning opportunity. and i think wheat taught us more than anything was the value of a work ethic, of being prepared, of showing up, being there for your teammates, basically. and, you know, we were so well prepared. he was so good at teaching us and guiding us that it made it took easy. and people gave us a lot of respect for that reason. i carry that over to this day, prepare hard, work hard so that whether i'm directing a movie or being on this show, you know, i'm ready and i try to make it took easy. >> dad just had a way of instyling confidence in us. i don't quite know how edit. he did it with honesty and simplicity. i all felt i was the most prepared actor on the show. i would get to the set and look around and say, you know, dad got us ready. >> clint, one of the reasons why you were so prepared, you explain it. your father at a very young age taught you all the value of understanding emotions. so you didn't just read scripts, he taught you something deeper. >> always about emotional honesty. another thing i carried with me in my work to this day, you know, build on a foundation of truth. and even though the andy griffith show was very funny, very loose, looking for laughs, full out comedy, andy always wanted to build from that place of kind of honesty. he didn't write shows like "petticoat junction" and "beverly hillbillies." the south is always come. >> what was it like to collaborate for film and this book. >> we were always so close as kids. we have this wonderful way of communicating without actually speaking to each other. i'll tell you what. working on the book with him was fabulous because we normally don't look backwards and this gave us an opportunity to really kind of go, this is what happened, right. this is what happened wrong. let's throw it out to the public. >> the book is "the boys" a memoir are of hollywood and family. how wonderful ron and clint howard, thank you both very much for sharing that with us this morning. >> great to be here. >> congratulations on the book. >> thank you so much. >> thanks. >> great talking to you guys. >> that does it for us this morning. hi everybody. i'm in for stephanie ruhle. it's monday, october 11th. it may be a holiday but a busy one. we're following several major stories. up first travel chaos. southwest cancelling nearly 2,000 flights leaving thousands still stranded. sparking questions about exactly why. also this morning, new challenges and deadlines in the investigation into the january 6th attack. a number of trump allies still not complying with subpoenas. the big question here will lawmakers actually do anything about it? one of those lawmakers on the january 6th committee, congressman jamie raskin will be here to talk about that. and then the battle over a restrictive abortion law
