KTVU KTVU July 3, 2024

There were no bullhorns nor speeches. It was just food, music and camaraderie. Organizers say the goal of this protest is very focused. Protesters want stanford to first disclose its investments related to any corporations profiting from the conflict in gaza, and then to divest. The ceasefire call is definitely a part of it, right . But like, i think we understand that within our very local context of being Stanford University students, we can probably leverage the most effort towards making a cease fire happen by like building on this huge pile of pressure, right, of which divestment and that kind of Company Pressure is a very clear part of that picture. On friday, stanford released this statement. While stanford understands students perspectives on an important global issue, violations of University Policy will not be overlooked. The submission of student names to the office of Community Standards student conduct process has begun in the University Also sent a message to the full community saying that the overnight tents are a safety and security issue and they are a clear violation of University Policy at usc. In los angeles, campus leaders have taken a different approach and called in the police to break up protests. And now administrators have announced that University Wide graduation ceremonies have been canceled. I was disheartened, obviously it has been a possibility for a few weeks given uscs decision to pull our valedictorian speech. Weve known that it it might happen for a few weeks, as there is definitely some turmoil on campus. Mira popli is a usc senior who is from pleasanton. While she is holding out hope some sort of smaller degree level ceremonies will still occur, uscs decision means she could miss her second graduation ceremony. I was crestfallen because this is a culmination of the four years at usc. Weve worked so hard for this and for four years this has been our our shot at redemption. Were finally going to get to walk because none of us got to walk in 2020, when we graduated during covid into not have, you know, the final moment of, you know, the moment in sun for the kids. I feel terrible for them. And back to a live picture here at stanford. Now students are not saying definitively if they plan to keep their tents up for a second night, which would be a violation of university policies. We have seen campus Public Safety officers watching over this protest from a distance. So far, there has been no interaction between those Public Safety officers and the protesters here. There are about 16 or 18 tents here in white plaza behind me. What happens later tonight remains to be seen reporting live on the stanford campus. Im mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. Christina mark, thank you for that report. One of the biggest protest in one of the first took root at Columbia University in new york and spread across the country. Foxs rebecca castor is in washington, d. C, where protests are now springing up in the nations capital. No peace on stolen land. Its a scene now commonplace on College Campuses across the u. S, as University Students from columbia, ut, austin, emory, gw and more raised their voices and set up encampments to protest israels war in gaza. The protesters are calling for a cease fire in gaza and are demanding their universities cut any financial ties to businesses that are profiting from the conflict. But for some jewish students, the rhetoric is concerning and they fear for their safety. What these people are doing here is standing up for justice. I havent heard any antisemitism from them, but do you feel that its threatening when you call for an intifada revolution . Youre calling for the mass death of jews, the mass murder of jews. Youre coming to my university and youre going to tell me that youre not threatening me. College president s are trying to balance free speech while also ensuring the safety of their students. Honestly, the university has done everything they can to be able to stop these protests or to be able to defend the jewish students on this campus, but theres only so much that they can do. We are able to exist here and live and learn and commune and protest together, palestinians are not able to do that. As the protests continue, theyre starting to have an effect on the end of the school year. Gw had to relocate its law school final exams, and the university of Southern California canceled its main commencement. Protests have spilled over outside campus because George Washington university is one of several College Campuses that is in its safety mode right now, meaning only students and faculty with id cards can get on campus. In washington, rebecca castor, fox news. A well known author from berkeley was among those arrested in southern israel today, the group of american and israeli rabbis and supporters demonstrated near the border with gaza to demand a cease fire and the delivery of aid. Novelist Michael Chabon said his wife, author ayelet waldman, was among those arrested and later released. The organizers say the demonstration was in the spirit of passover, celebrating food and freedom. And so at this point, to do this action now really resonates with the spirit of the season of passover. The spirit of is the passover is the season of our liberation, and we want it to be a season of liberation for all people. Because no people are free unless all people are free. U. N. Through this program, our teens have been equipped to engage in open and constructive conversations, support their peers, and confidently navigate their own identities, jewish or otherwise, particularly in in environments where they may be marginalized or discriminated against. Especially how weve seen after october 7th. So far, the program has served a dozen students during workshops and a weekend retreat. Organizers say the students learned how to stand up for themselves at a time of growing incidence of antisemitism, a developing story in concord this hour, where Authorities Say that a thousand people were evacuated from a costco. Heres a look at the scene on monument boulevard. This picture provided by calfire. They say about 800 customers and 200 employees were evacuated just after 2 00 this afternoon. I write a note on the lunch i then realized that yeah, we will always remember you, the laughs you gave us and your beautiful smile. The fallen officer had followed in his fathers footsteps, as well as his godfather, oakland officer willie wilkins, killed by friendly fire back in 2001. The owner of dicks donuts on high street says the masked man first came in and bought coffee in a donut and left. He returned a few seconds later, grabbed the register off the counter and ran out. Ktvu is christian captain live in the city at one of those intersections where officers will be watching closely for speeders, christian. Yeah. Hi. We are at the intersection of geary and divisadero, and this is one of those intersections that has all the hallmarks for speeding. It has multiple lanes east and west bound. It has a light that drivers sometimes feel they need to race to try to get here. And you can see it has crosswalks going on in each direction. So that is why this is one of those intersections that the city says its now going to be focusing on , to make sure that it tries to stop as many speeders as possible. Some intersections in San Francisco are notorious for speeding vehicles, including mission and ninth street. People living in the area say pedestrians have to pay close attention when crossing. Its pretty erratic. You really have to be aware when youre crossing this intersection now. San Francisco Police say the department has already started a plan to step up scrutiny and enforcement at this intersection, and nine other high injury corridors in an effort to slow drivers down. Pedestrian Advocacy Group walk San Francisco says speed kills and anything the police can do to slow drivers down will help save lives. Speed is the worst and most dangerous driving behavior. It is the cause of most of the crashes that weve seen in San Francisco, and were happy that the sfpd is going to start really focusing on that most dangerous behavior. Word about the latest Enforcement Effort with officers in person, enforcing the speed limit comes as the city prepares to install 33 speed cameras at dangerous stretches of road walk. Sf says its all part of an Overlapping Network of enforcement aimed at protecting pedestrians, cyclists and even drivers. This combination of sfpd and cameras working together, it really does show that San Francisco is a city where, the city cares about its people coming into San Francisco. It does want people to walk and bike more. It wants to make its streets safe. Some pedestrians say while they hope the added enforcement works, theyre not sure it will have a Lasting Impact as long as theyre around. Yeah, itll slow down, but i dont. I think itll go right back once they leave. And to combat the chance of only having a short term impact, San Francisco police say their enforcement will come in waves to make sure there is consistent enforcement over a sustained period of time. Police say some components of the plan are already in place. Others, they say, are still being implemented. Were live in San Francisco, c
