Effect at 10 00 p. M. On saturday and last four weeks. Reporter indeed. The thing thats important is there are some details that are important to add to the Broad Strokes that you just put out there. What it is that california will impose a socalled stay at home curfew in purple tear counties. You got to be in a purple tear or if you go into a purple tear. It prohibits most nonessential activities outside the home between 10 00 p. M. And 5 00 a. M. All of this is trying to prevent an uncontrolled spread, a meltdown, if you will, of covid. That spread is trying to be stopped in the most critical period, thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Here is the state of Secretary Health and what he had to say. We too are seeing this surge growing faster and faster and we must address it immediately. We are putting forward a limited stayathome order, one that is more targeted, one that is more focused in the following ways. It impacts counties that are in the purple tear. We are asking that as part of this targeted, limited stayat home order that people are home by 10 00 and stay home until 5 00 a. M. This order, this Public Health order that will be modified at the state level will be effective november 21st. That is saturday night at 10 00 p. M. And will go until december 21st at 5 00 a. M. Reporter now you can still go out for essential things. For example, your Grocery Stores are open past 10 00 and you want to go there. That is not prohibited or very possibly getting gasoline and things like that. Nonessential businesses, though, they must close between those hours, but they are still open and can do deliveries and do the pickups. They are not allowed to have people inside or any of that stuff. What you have to understand is that this is limited, but it will be a very big burden for some folks because they are mostly not going to like it. Back to you. Tom, we know that the governor has plenty of critics who have charged that he has been overstepping his authority when issuing directives related to the coronavirus. It is very likely that we will see a legal challenge here, too. Reporter very likely we will seek legal challenges. They have a lot of leeway with things like curfews amply because of the Public Health and Public Safety matters that they do have a lot of control over. It doesnt mean you cant sue and it doesnt mean that a judge may not order a recession, so to speak, in those rules. The reality is that unless its something thats a real emergency kind of situation, it goes through the court system and by that time covid should be at least or under control with vaccines and therapeutics. A right. As you mentioned, this curfew expected to last for the next month. Tom reporting live for us this afternoon. Thank you, tom. A closer look at the numbers in our state. California is moving closer to 1. 1 million cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began with more than 11,000 new cases reported since yesterday. Reporter with the week before thanksgiving, air travel is light at Oakland International and other bay area airports. We wanted to break it up so we werent traveling with a bunch of other people. Its a little bit easier the week before. Reporter this as Officials Say travel during the 11 day thanksgiving holiday period is projected to be 1 5 of what it was last year. That is due in large part to governor gavin newsom who says a doubling of the daily covid case count should curtail thanksgiving celebrations. This is the fastest increase california has seen since the beginning of this pandemic. Reporter newsom says 94 of the states population is in the purple tear including six bay area counties. As a result, Officials Say people should forgo thanksgiving gatherings with families and friends. Its a request that is drawing fire from some considering the governors recent gaffe. Take a look at him having his French Laundry activities that were going on. Thats not even with close family. Reporter the governors of california, oregon and washington asked travelers to self quarantine for 14 days when leaving these states and limiting contact to immediate households. Its just one more thing on top of these many months of restrictions of having things that we are used to taken away from us in order to deal with this pandemic. Reporter is this is that it seen the daylight of partial reopening are once again having to deal with increased restrictions and a halt to indoor activities. This during a time that is traditionally used to kick off the Holiday Shopping season. History professor nancy tom says the idea of lengthening the buying season was born out of the mass last major Global Pandemic and influenced by the return of troops from world war i. The influenza pandemic, people were encouraged to shop early for the Christmas Holidays as part of the effort to reduce density in stores and to prevent the return of the great flu. Reporter the spanish influenza of 1918 saw a resurgence in the fall and early winter, similar to coronavirus conditions now. Government officials continue stressing social distancing, masks and keeping hands clean as the bedrock of the struggle as People Struggle over whether to ride out the pandemic with limited contact or embrace the things that matter. With all the stuff going on with the pandemic, you need the strength and support of your family. Reporter jesse gary, ktvu, fox2 news. Now we have extended it to five days to make sure everyone can be socially distant and still get through the line quickly. Many people in the bay area have lost their jobs during the pandemic and those we spoke with today say they are really grateful for the help they are getting from the community.
