A man is challenging himself to a series of rents and bike rides as part of a big fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. Next, well talk to him about his journey and how his wife has been a big inspiration. Stay right there. A man from richmond is putting himself to the test and during a 10 day challenge of bike rides and marathons. He is planning to run a full 26. 2 mile marathon tomorrow. Its part of the tour of brian. Here at the bike 235 miles and also run more than 22 must. His wife melissa has Cystic Fibrosis and hes doing this to raise money for further research and prevention efforts. We are lucky to have both brian and melissa joining us now this morning. Hi, guys. Hi, how are you . I am reading your story and its about a 10 day challenge but it feels like a love story between you of really a team effort of inspiration and working together to tackle Cystic Fibrosis, which is so important. First of all, he got a marathon tomorrow. Brian we will get to your personal story. How are you preparing . It will be hot tomorrow and your timing is impeccable. It will be bad. I picked a bad week for nick i didnt get to choose though. I will start really, really early pick it will probably have to start between 4 30 am or 5 am to beat the heat. It will be nasty everywhere so i cant really avoid it, but i can run from the sun deck thats the plan. Run from the sun. Melissa, at six months old, you are diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and reading your , a double Lung Transplant and everything that you have faced in terms of challenges beyond that, you are also a hiker and a bike rider. To me how this story has influenced your life. I was lucky to have two wonderful parents who anyway, wanted me to live as much of a normal life as i could pick they always said that i was a person before my disabilities eric i am missile with Cystic Fibrosis rather than a patient. They influenced me and they loved hiking and took me out to do a bunch of things and exposed me to as many things as possible. My Life Expectancy was 11 years old when i was diagnosed when i was young, they just wanted for me to as much of the world as possible. So i just carry that in honor of both of them. It is inspiring to see even just the pictures of this full left. You are living and thats inspiring to a lot of people. I imagine brian, it sounds like from everything youre doing, it has been very inspiring to you as well. Very much so. We balance each other out in a lot of different ways. Have been lucky enough to be able to kind of bring more attention to this cause with the intensity of the effort. When they announced that it was a possibility to do any of these things, i thought i would do all nine of them in 10 days just with the hope of having myself bringing more encouragement to get people pulled it really has. We have a great group of donors and people who support us year in and year out there, we have been doing these a lot and would like to get involved with all the Cystic Fibrosis charities in the bay area. We are involved with the Cystic FibrosisLifestyle Foundation right now. Whatever it takes to extend Life Expectancy and to keep moving things in the right direction. We want to be a part of that when it happens to say we were a part of it. Lets just take people through. What you are doing. You started on the seventh with a 40 mile bike ride and followed that up with a 10k run the next day and then connected with 100 mile bike run. And then you rested and then a half day marathon. And then a 62 mile bike ride. 25 mile bike ride and then im exhausted just go through the list but thats the list on the screen. When youre struggling through through some of this because these underthings are mental game. What are you thinking about to get you through it and what you think in terms of you already said you will start early with the merrifiled. What will be the hardest part of this final challenge . Its mostly the aches and pains that add up and make it mental. I end up hurting and we are places that i didnt anticipate. I am sure that if it was an elite level athlete they would probably look at this and scoff. Most of the time it is just a lot of turning the mind off more than anything. And i am lucky to have melissa here and my friend scott and his wife that are helping me out to make sure that i stay optimal so water is on hand. Or what ever it takes to get through these things. And most of the time is just do it. I know it will get done, and that is the motivation. There is a finish line to all of this. At this point, we have had so much love and support with what we have done that it is really hard to not finish it. If i dont finish it, then it is not really putting the endcap on it that it needs. It is necessary to finish it and thats what i am looking at. You are a lead in my book. I dont know about you not being a lead because this is pretty impressive. This is an Education Campaign as well so people can understand her, it seems to me that the endurance of it is like the march to finding treatments and cures for what you are talking about in terms of Cystic Fibrosis. What you find is the biggest prize for people as you try to educate about what this is like and what is needed to fight it . A lot of it is Great Research for Cystic Fibrosis with the new developments but also there is transplant patients. A lot of people that need Lung Transplants or kidney transplants or heart and lung it is a lot of education to help promote research to further the advancement of transplantation pick i think another thing that is really important is that the implications of cf is not just a lung disease. My wife did six years of dialysis because of the antirejection medicine caused her kidneys to fail. So diabetes comes with it work and just like all of these Different Things that can be created that can put you in and out of the hospital 100 times per year. It is just a very complicated thing that we are all starting to sort out together and that the most important part about the education is to realize how allencompassing it is for everything. It goes from your lungs to your immune system to everything and we are here to bring awareness to it and we have done well so far and we will keep going. I am inspired by your effort and by your love story and by using this platform to help so many others to raise money. I will think of you early in the morning hoping that they heat holds off or just a little bit to ease you into that full marathon that you are tackling during this heat wave. We will be sure to link to your fund ways are website. Good luck to both. Thank you for your time this morning pick thank you very much. So great to talk to them. Rosemary, i wish there was a way you could turn down the dial on the temperature to hold off just a little bit for brian as he does that mere thought. I was thinking today, if he had run thats a few days ago, it might be a little easier. Maybe he will run in the dark and it will be slightly better. You are right. That bay area living. No fog to talk of, and a lot of that hot stuff going to be sticking around much of the week. Already in the upper 70s in San Francisco, and its going to get hotter inland. Welcome back to mornings on 2. And claudine, i looked up nome, alaska. Its in the 60s there, so i guess we are getting our due. Yes, everything is relative, right . So i think, rosemary, that may be well just have to think of it relative to what it was earlier this week and where it will be in a week and just tough it out for this stretch because man, it is, it is hot and im trying to be patient, but even i dont have air conditioning, so it is a tough one. It is a tough one. Sometimes, i almost like to say that i am worse off than the folks inland that have the ac, right . Its 105 outside your door, but at least you have ac in your home. Me, its 89 degrees in my house, and i cant escape it. We have another warm one coming our way. Not quite as hot as yesterday. Were going to shave off a few degrees and mysterious, and most areas not expected to break records today, although we could see an isolated one, two, maybe three. A look over San Francisco were its a blue sky, hazy one for you there. For our inland east bay, thats where we have an excessive heat warning that continues only in our east bay but also the Santa Clara Valley from san jose, gilroy, and the northbay mountains built the heat advisory, San Francisco peninsula , our bayside communities, as well as the santa cruz mountains. When i come back, better look around your temperatures, the afternoon highs for today. Tomorrow will be slightly cooler, but i introduced the possibility of heightened fire danger by tonight. Details on this and the extended forecast coming up. Thanks, rosemary. Pg e is the restoring power this power after hundreds of thousands of customers lost their electricity during this heatwave. Lets take a look at pg es outage meant for you right now. Looks much better than it did just a few hours ago. So no more areas really in the red. The large outage were seeing is in East San Jose were several hundred families remain without power. Ktvu Elissa Harrington joined us live, and elissa . It does not look like we are out of the woods yet, but there are a lot of questions in terms of people and their notifications and were they expecting this and its different from those planned power shutoffs, right . Right absolutely, yeah. People said they got no notice, and pg e said they could not let people know ahead of time because it was an emergency situation. Reporter we do know this could happen again because we have several more days of extremely hot weather. The best thing you can do, according to pg e, is do your best to conserve energy. Shut your drapes or blinds in order to keep the temperature in your house as cool as possible for as long as possible so you dont have to use air conditioning potentially as much. We would also encourage customers if they are able to delay until later in the evening household chores like running the washing machine or their dishwasher, or even vacuuming. Just by avoiding those types of things, it will help us have the necessary supply to meet the demand. Reporter i want to show you some video from area still without power this morning. First, theres antioch, one of the hardest hit areas. Thats also where temperatures soared into the triple digits. You can imagine what its like for people who maybe could not even run a fan overnight. Also in livermore, residents there said they were caught by surprise when their power went out yesterday. Pg e began these rotating Power Outages at the direction of the state grid operator. Cal iso ordered rolling blackouts of about one hour each, but many residents say their power was out for much longer than that. Well, it was surprising. The power went off late last night, and here we are, 7 00 am, and it is still off. We heard that they might do a rolling blackout for 60 or 90 minutes, but here we are still out. Kind of strange because its the first big heatwave, so i dont know what the problem is. Reporter a lot of people wanted to know these outages were part of pg es Public Safety power shutoff, which is for fire prevention, but this was not. This is the first time in years the utility has done these rolling blackouts because of the power emergency. People all over the state were blasting airconditioners and running fans, plus using normal appliances, and because of the pandemic, so many people are at home right now, so its really the perfect storm. So many different counties throughout the state in this heatwave. Everybody trying to use their power, and it exceeded the amount available. So the emergency has been lifted, but these rolling blackouts could happen again, so make sure you have your flashlights, batteries, and an emergency plan reporting live, im Elissa Harrington, ktvu fox 2 news.
