convention, which begins august 17th, instead of today or this week, as biden had previously indicated. biden's allegedly short list, according to some reports, including the associated press, includes sondland california talisman karen bass, chair of the congressional black caucus, who is a top contender. as well as former obama national security adviser susan rice and telephone a senator, lazarus. there are more people that made that list as well. 20& all of this, we've got david mcewan, political science professor at sonoma state university. this is an interesting one, david. we talk about contenders, the list goes from three people to 10 people. we know back in march it was going to be a woman, we thought it was going to be this week: now it will be baby the 10th, what are we thinking in terms of this delay and why he's waiting? >> there are a couple of reasons. one is circumstances, current circumstances. got a number of primaries that are happening later this next week on tuesday. in that event spinning out of control, if you will. got a narrative going on and if you look at the candidates that are here, there seems to be so many thoughts about how to pick the right person. do you pick someone like tammy duckworth, do you go in a different direction and pick someone like susan rice, who was impeccable foreign-policy credentials? or do you pick california's own kamala harris or karen bass, the former speaker of the california assembly? member of congress and leader of the congressional black caucus, as you mentioned? or do you go a different direction somewhere else? there are different constituencies battling here and really what you are taking is not only a presidential candidate, you're picking someone on the national scene for the democratic party in 2024. if joe biden were to win the presidential election in november, run for reelection ahead of the 2024 election, would be 82 years old. really, you're picking the next generation of the party and what that looks like. all of that placing a lot of emphasis on this pick. normally we don't think the vice presidential pick matters a lot. this particular election, this set of circumstances, it will have a substantial impact on the race. >> it is very different. i know you don't like to pick favorites and i know you don't like to put the money on anyone candidate but it is interesting in terms of what will be the overwhelming decision. is it going to be the are you ready for office tomorrow? that has been, what you just mentioned in terms of his age and how people are feeling, or will it be the more traditional are they from a state where we could get that support westmark or will it be because, you know, we are trying to appeal to , you know, one certain demographic? does anything rise up? they are all important. we are all considering them more than maybe in elections past but is anyone raising to, you know, if you were advising him and say this is what you should consider when making this pick, which one do you think is going to be the enduring one? >> you need two things. you need to verve and inspiration. this ticket, joe biden is going to need a little bit of a bump up. who gives you verve, who gives you inspiration? is that isn't going to be michelle obama? is it going to be "much is not going to run. if you can't get those sure fire winners, who do you go to next? this is where susan rice, if you are interested in foreign- policy issues has arisen. she's an east coast media centered elite washington, d.c., very serious foreign- policy credentials. it is unclear what that looks like in terms of the race. china will be very important but if you think about what has happened in terms of economic upheaval over the last two or three months, this is what gives rise to someone like paul harris or karen bass. karen bass is on the inside right now and if you think joe biden can deliver those midwestern working-class states like ohio and pennsylvania, wisconsin, then you don't need a tammy duckworth. you also have to look to the south, who can help you in georgia. that is where an african- american woman would help you as well. >> it's a woman back in march. we knew that for sure. do you think, you know, so elizabeth warren was still in the mix, it seems she's kind of falling down the ladder in terms of talk, do you think we are definitely going to see a woman of color being chosen in terms of who people want to see? >> you need to have an enthusiasm component there and african-americans are here components for democratic presidential voting success. if you were to pick an african- american woman, that would give you a boost in some of those key battleground states. that also helps you, if you will, down ballot. that could be a critical component and it's also historic. that is something that barack obama would have an influence on and something joe biden would be looking forward to as well. >> let's talk about the back and forth. this delay to august 10th, despite the elections and voting that are happening right now, it keeps us talking. been talking about this since march going back and forth and keeping that energy level up and people are excited and interested but it, how do you think this is going to play once the announcement is made, how president trump will react, how much will it continue to be in the debate or do we just pick and say okay and it becomes a biden and trumpet discussion again? and how that all is changing with on a planet, with coronavirus, everything that continues to play into the headlines? >> very good question. if you think about this in terms of the context, what you have here is you have a pandemic in the background, you have the recession, to have the protests, you have the most important election we have seen in a generation. all of this means the price vice presidential selection, the debates, the contest between president trump and former vice president biden is going to be contentious, it's going to involve negative mobilization, people are going to get a lot of negative messages, they are going to be voting from a place that of positivity. that means the dynamic of the campaign changes. once you make this announcement, it moves you into some bump into the presidential mainstream kicked off of the contest. that is typically the conventions and the post labor day test. august is a key month for decision-making, for being on the air because what comes next is to focus attention. that is why this pick in this environment is so consequential. a bump out of the convention and what do things look like post labor day as voters turned their attention to what is happening as their children are going back to school? >> all right, david mcewen, interesting to talk about. great as always to have your perspective. as we look to august 10th, then we will look to august 17th, it should be an interesting month for politics. thanks so much. >> thank you very much. all right claudine and david, let's get over to rosemary now. it is looking down at her map saying don't worry bay area, we are going to clear up
