They offered the california prison officials free covid19 testing for all inmates and staff. The state said, no thank you. Reporter there are nonprofit testing labs that are at public universities like carrot uc berkeley but we found with the states reliance on corporations, there are thousands of would be free tests going unused. We are a Public University and here to serve the state. Reporter a full shift in focus at uc berkeley with the covid19 Pandemic Research happening around the clock. Free Rapid Testing was offered to vulnerable populations like those in prisons. If any of the folks in charge of these facilities dont have a system for vigorous and acrosstheboard testing, they have to have one now. Reporter this genetics professor set up the volunteer lab and said the call to prison officials went largely unanswered. We wrote to san quentin and they said thank you, but we are all set. Reporter that was in april and since then, there was an outbreak at san quentin with more than 2000 inmates and 200 employees infected and at least 14 deaths. I wrote to them again and offered testing. Yet again, the polite reply was thank you, but we are all set. Reporter they wasnt set and they admitted it in an oversight hearing. We didnt have the resources to conduct this with surveillance for institutions having covid. Reporter california relies on corporations like quest to handle the testing. Long turnaround times and a backlog make taming the virus difficult. The virus is out there and its an evil and smart thing. It will go in and amplify. Reporter experts that visited the prison in june warned of vulnerabilities, including inadequate staffing for swabbing and slow testing time with it being six or more days later. Its essentially useless. You need to know in 24 to 36 hours and that is what we can do. Reporter its critical that those infected are isolated and inmates with older risk factors being isolated. Theyve put all of our lives on the line. Reporter recently released inmate Kenneth Larkins became infected and battled the virus behind bars. Everybody was catching the virus. They wasnt moving anyone. They wasnt testing people. People was telling the nurses, im feeling this way, short of breath and im aching and there was no type of medical attention, whatsoever. Reporter lawyers pushed motions to compel the state to listen to medical experts and the requests were denied. A Field Hospital and 250 Health Care Workers are onsite and testing problems persist in all california prisms. We are aggressively trying to seek greater contacts with greater testing at the institutions. It is difficult to receive and obtain contracts. We were so eager to help. It frustrates me and pains me that we werent given the opportunity, it really does. Reporter over the last two weeks, the state tested roughly 1500 patients at san quentin and they said the same number of tests could be done at his lab in two days. This is probably one of the worst tragedies that i, personally, have seen as part of my direct experience. A cafeteria at the white house is closed this morning after a cafeteria worker tested positive for coronavirus. The cafeteria is in the Eisenhower Executive Office building across from the west wing of the white house. The white house is now conducting contact tracing. At home, a 62yearold woman from vallejo who worked at a Veterans Home contracted coronavirus and then died days after testing positive. Wendell and robinson developed a fever and nausea last tuesday, july 14. She went to the hospital and tested positive. By saturday, struggling to breathe, she said goodbye to her family on face time. Her purse is still in the house. Her shoes, everything, every part of her is still there. I told her she dont got to fight no more. She can go get her wings. Her heart stopped. Her children dont believe she contracted the virus at the Veterans Home. There are strict measures in place. They dont know where she got it. Her husband of 35 years has the virus, as well and he is in the hospital. He is said to be improving and the family hopes he will pull through. Today, reverend c. T. Vivian will be laid to rest. The civil rights icon and the leader for the fight for equality died last friday. His body was lying in state at the Georgia State capitol, as family members and friends paid tribute to the trailblazer. He was a freedom writer and was beaten in alabama while trying to register black voters in the 1960s. The funeral will be at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church in atlanta later this morning. People arent getting government checks because of sporadic service and thats not acceptable. We dont get no mail and when we do, we have each others mail in the wrong box.
