toll plaza. >> we are looking at the east bay. since you mentioned the toll plaza, i think i will dial that up for you and show you the traffic is backed up for the 10 to 15 minute delay that we normally have at this time. it is not a light commute. people are getting to business and driving to san francisco. there are no problems on the altamont pass but has has cleared. 28 # 0 troofk looks good and so does traffic in the valley. let's go back to the headlines at 7:02. >> we begin with a developing story we are following. three contra costa sheriff's deputies were injured by a barricaded suspect. the person was killed. it happened in a community northeast of brentwood. alyssa has more on the condition of the deputies wounded. >> good morning. all of the deputies were members of the swat team. two of them are in the hospital this morning. the suspect was killed. this happened on the 1700 block of green acres lane in knightson. it happened around 9:00 last night. deputies were called to the scene hours earlier just before 10:00 in the morning on a domestic violence call. the victim said the suspect was holding her hostage. this turned into a lenghi standoff. the suspect barricaded himself inside the house. they tried to get the suspect to surrender. at one point the suspect came out and opened fire on the deputies. the deputies returned fire, killing the suspect. the woman inside the home was able to get out safely. contra costa county sheriff's office is expected to release more information later today. at this time, they have not released any names. i'm alyssa harington, ktvu. >> thank you. interstate 580 is open at the altamont pass after an overnight fire that happened at north flynn and carol roads. just before midnight a pickup truck crashed into the center divide and burst into flames. the flames spread to the brush and that forced the closure of 580 in both directions for a time. crews at this point and completely contained the fire. all lanes of 580 are open. no :80 are open. no injuries were reported. it is 7:04. new reports that sonoma county has been added to california's growing coronavirus watch list. county health leaders were notified the official declaration from the state will come sometime today. it follows three days of talks between state and county experts on ways to slow the rise in the number of virus cases. the state is expected to reimpose restrictions on sonoma county bars, tasting rooms, and indoor dining at restaurants for at least the next three weeks. happening today, an online forum hosted by the marin county health department. the county has been added to the state's watch list. marin county will not allow indoor dining for at least three weeks. you can join the zoom call on this by going to the web link section of ktvu.com. the event starts at 4:00 this afternoon. inmates recently released from san quenten prison painting a gloomy picture of the covid-19 inside san quenten. yesterday they took part in a rally outside of the prison. more than 1600 of the 4,000 inmates have been infected. a month ago, there were only a dozen cases. seven inmates have now died of the virus. the demonstration yesterday included the reading of letters from inmates and from people who were just released talked about the conditions inside. >> scary, dangerous, uncomfortable, unpredictable. >> i'm begging you ato see how we suffer. i'm begging you to open up your hearts to compassion and not politics. i'm begging you to hear us and please, gavin newsom, save our lives. we are dying in here. >> the governor says the state will keep working to reduce the inmate population at san quinton. there are tents set up outside to provide more social distancing. the governor is also talking about california's record death toll from coronavirus saying we have to take it seriously. >> for those that just think that now people are getting it and no one is dying, that is very misleading. it is fundamentally untrue. and california's numbers reporting over a seven day period, averaging 73, 149 yesterday, are a testament to that point, how devastating and deadly this disease continues to be. >> governor newsom says california is especially focused on getting help to people in four of the 26 counties on the california watch list. the counties in the central valley and los angeles in kourn california. at this point more than 200,000 people have tested positive for covid-19 in the state. yesterday saw 7,000 new cases of the coronavirus state wide. 149 people died as the death toll now stands at more than 6700 people. we focus s on the bay area and find more than 32,000 cases have been reported, an increase of 1,000. 636 people have died. at least 45 employees at san francisco's general hospital have become infecteded with covid-19. the number of cases rose by 50 % between june 27th and july 6th. the hospital ceo said they believe the majority of the cases may have come from community spread rather than inside the hospital. still, the hospital is reportedly increasing safety including opening a new break room to allow for more physical social distancing. time now is 7:07. demonstrators will gather in antioch to honor three men recently killed in police shootings. it followed several weeks of protests in the city over police brutality and racial injustice. it is a response to the police department's hiring of a former san francisco police officer four years ago who was involved in the deadly shooting of a homeless man. in berkeley, they could soon become the first city in america to assign unarmed transportation workers to conduct traffic stops instead of police officers. this idea is part of an effort taking place around the country to redefine law enforcement. the berkeley city council is due to debate the issue at its meeting on tuesday. time now is 7:08. we just had a big negotiation of when we are turning on the oven. he is making sour dough with us is it's a big high and as it builds north, the inlands are way above average. early next week, it will start to cool down. 90s to near 100 degrees inland. i don't see a change in the pattern going through sunday. could be a drop in temperatures on sunday. it looks cooler with a bigger fog bank early next week. oakland public school leaders have not figured out what to do with the coming school year. we will tell you the options on the table for this fall. some graduate students at uc santa cruz lost their jobs after withholding grades to get more pay. we will tell you about a new taking part in a strike for more money may not get their jobs back. the union representing the students reached a deal with the university to allow them to come back to work this fall. the details still being worked out. students walked off the job in december demanding more money. uc sanda cruz fired them four months later saying they didn't meet the deadline to submit their final grades. a fatal police shooting in vallejo a month ago is raising more questions this morning. a police officer shot and killed sean monta rosa after firing a rifle from the back seat of an unmarked police truck. the latest incident where a local law enforcement officer shot and killed a suspect from inside of a police vehicle. many police officers say it can be very dangerous if they get out of their cars during some tense situations. civil rights attorney john barris had this reaction. >> shooting from the inside of a car is a potentially very dangerous thing. one, you can create danger for the driver of the car. you can create danger for yourself. you can have a car that is out of control. >> i don't think it is best practice to shoot through the windshield of the car because the glass shatters back. but if you think there is a threat to you or someone else, i don't think any policies cover that particular aspect. >> there have been at least deadly police shootings in the bay area in the past three years where officers fired at suspects from inside of their patrol cars, all three are still under investigation. santa clara county will allow gyms and fitness centers to reopen this monday. they have to comply with new guidelines issued by the county health department. the rules include wearing face masks at all time including while people are exercising. social distancing must be followed. there is a limit to the number of people allowed inside each facility. meanwhile indoor pools, steam rooms, showers and vending machines are still off limits. representatives from the world health organization are headed to china today to investigate the origins of covid-19. the w.h.o. is expected to meet with chinese counterparts in beijing to set the scope and terms for an international mission to learn how the virus jumped from animals to humans. scientists say they believe the virus originated from bats but they are unsure if it spread through an inner mediate species. the u.s. has cut ties with the w.h.o.. more than 120 countries have called for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. a german company working with the drug maker pfizer says it is confident that the covid-19 vaccine will be ready for regulatory approval by december. biotech is one of several firms that have started trials on vaccine candidates. last week an early stage of the trial showed better than expected results with no serious side effects. scientists believe that the mechanism by which most vaccines work would make them easier and cheaper to manufacture than mose vaccines. there is new data that shows an antiviral drug reduces the mortality of coronavirus. remdizever has shown promise as a treatment option. data from a trial shows that it reduces the risk of death in covid-19 patients by 62%. the company cautions that the findings would need further confirmation in additional trials. our time is now 7:17. if you have to get on the road, sal knows everything about our commute, what we have on a friday. how does it look out there, sal? >> it looks okay, dave. as a matter of fact, we see traffic is going to be busy in the usual spots. some of the other spots are not busy. for example, we expect it to be slow. sometimes we expect fridays to be a slow commute but there is traffic out there. the bay bridge wait is an hour. this is a look at 880. that looks good. 580 is improving with no major issues. if you are driving to the south bay, this is a look at the commute here. you can see in san jose, traffic is moving along very well, getting out into the traffic here. we will watch the bay bridge. there was an earlier stalled vehicle near the metering lights. we will watch that. that's the busiest traffic. it's 7:18. let's bring in steve with the weather. >> thank you, sir. there is a fog bank and cold ocean temperatures by the coast. it will be cooler by some. inland temperatures won't have a problem getting to the 90s to near 100 again. the forecast calls for cooler over the coast, 60s to near 100 on the temperature spread. a much bigger fog bank than yesterday by far. the inland areas, i'll tell you it started on wednesday, continued yesterday, it will probably go into sunday for sure. maybe backing off a little monday. it will still be hot for some on monday. it looks cooler next week. embarcadero, they made it to 52. santa clara will be about 62. concord is 66. sfo is 53 and berkeley is 53. so it is cooler for some today. 37 in tahoe. i think we are tying a warm record low for the date because we have high clouds coming in. monsoons, keeping an eye on the south, not into southern california yet but maybe soon. the fog is here in all its glory and that will keep temperatures to the 60s and 70s for the bay. much than yesterday. oakland and half moon bay are a little cooler. i think there will be a couple of locations a little cooler. other inland areas will be as warm or maybe a little warmer than yesterday. 60s and 7 oz on the bay and coast and then 80s and 90s inland. over to sal, where would you like to start? we will start in oakland. there is a problem and i would not advice you if you are driving to oakland to use 880 from the maze, as you head south. there is apaccident near the broadway alameda exit. i have been watching the traffic. we have slow traffic on 880 south. kevin is following it with the camera here. it is very slow as you drive south. look at all of the slow traffic. you don't want to do that. you want to use eastbound 580 as a alternate route. the backup keeps going and going and going. i would not, look there it is. i would not use 880 south from the maze. let's talk about the bay bridge. we had a couple of stalls. approaching high street, there is a crash coming up towards high street. now there is slow traffic here. a lot of stuff all of a sudden started going on. 7:31 now. we are following a story in contra costa county where three deputies were shot and a suspect in a standoff was killed last night in knightson, northeast of brentwood. sheriff's deputies say a domestic violence suspect burst out of a home and started shooting at deputies. the deputies immediately fired back, killing the suspect. two of the wounded deputies are still in the hospital this morning. a woman who was in the home was able to get out safely. the sheriff's office will give us more information on what happened later today. meanwhile, an investigation is underway after the santa clara county sheriff's office says human remains were found near a homeless encampment in unincorporated san jose. prime team investigators went there after getting a call from someone who found the bones. the sheriff's office says it is too early to know if the bones belong to a man or a woman. the remains were found in a creek bed in the area of richmond avenue in santa theresa boulevard. if you have any information, call the santa clara county sheriff's office. new this morning, contra costa county firefighters have knocked down the fire at a marijuana grow operation in antioch. the flames broke out a little before 3:30 this morning on linden way and dog wood way. inside they say you can see a lot of plants and damage to the ceiling. everyone inside got out. there is no word yet on how that fire started. 37,000 oakland students, parents, and teachers waiting to hear today's opening plan that they have for the city of oakland. opening day is only 31 days away. the school doors will open monday, august 10th. it is only the middle of july but it is time to talk about going back to school. several bay area school districts are more than a month away from opening their doors. how will that look in our new covid-19 world? ktuv frank malco is here talking about what is ahead for the oakland unified school district. we will have more details this morning. right? >> good morning and happy friday. yes, a number of students, parents, teachers anxiously awaiting today's preliminary plan. summer flew by. 31 days from now, oakland will open doors. august 10th is that opening day. open unified has been working through a number of scenarios for how that first day will look, not to mention the rest of the year. they had a zoom meeting with families taking part. parents liked the idea of a half day of distance learning and the other half at school. 53% were in favor of a day at school, followed by a day of at home learning. we will find out more about meal plans for the kids, face coverings, thermometer checks and other ppe and how they will keep the classrooms sanitized. and safety is priority number one for the district. parents are concerned. earlier this week, some of the parents and district staff members held a car caravan to demand the school remain closed during the pandemic. planning the school year will be even more difficult because $35 million needs to be cut from the budget. the oakland schools superintendent said quote, it is the worst reduction to education since the great recession. so a lot of things to consider today. of course all subject to change. if alameda county and the state's covid-19 cases continue to rise, there are currently over 7400 cases in alameda county alone. the preliminary plan should come out this morning and we will have it for you here on mornings on 2. that is the latest. >> frank, thank you. it is 7:35. the largest district in sonoma county is moving close to a plan for reopening. santa rosa says the plan allows flexibility to address changing conditions midthe pandemic. at this point it appears the school year will start next month with all of the district's 16,000 students learning from home. the antioch school district has pushed back the start of the school year by a month with a september 1st start day. the mrn calls for a mix of in person and online learning for the students. the cdc is expected to release additional guidelines next week. this comes after the head of the cdc says health officials won't revise guidelines despite criticism from president trump. the current guidelines recommend that students and teachers wear masks, spread out desks, stagger schedules, eat meals in the classroom instead of the cafeteria and adphysical barriers between bathroom sinks. after 25 covid-19 cases were linked to two locations, two restaurants are opening. the mcdonald's are being ordered to show they are keeping customers safe. amanjure for both locations, 11 workers at the oakland restaurant and 6 family members including a 10 month old baby and 7 at the berkeley tested positive. berkeley bowl would not say how many workers were infected. they have been self isolated as have others who had contact with them. the stores have been deep cleaned. berkeley bowl says the workers will not return to work until they test negative for covid-19. the san francisco mayor london breed says she tested negative for the coronavirus. she will be tested again next week and until then she will follow the advice of the san francisco health department. on wednesday, the mayor revealed she had been to an event that was attended by a person who tested positive. the owner of a wine bar in venecia is speaking out after he was cited for violating the order that employees have to wear facial coverings. two agents from the department of alcoholic beverage control stopped by the loft wine bar and restaurant after getting a complaint that employees were not wearing facial coverings. the owner says four out of five employees did not have a mask on because they say they have health exemptions under california's mask guidelines. >> i was told that i'm not allowed to ask. as an employer, there are a lot of things i'm not allowed to ask employees. if they fall under the exemption, they have to check it and i sign off on it. >> the facial coverings could have been worn by some of the employees so they cited the owner for not obeying a health order. 7:39. average. we can't get below but it happens once in a while. 92 is the record high of 1959. and 1897 is the record low of 42. oakland is a little cooler, not a lot, just a couple of degrees. now if it comes in at 89, it should be a little cooler. inland it will be warm and hot. higher clouds come in. some of those are moving through the santa clara valley around san jose south. 50s to mid-60s or low 70s. again, we are setting the stage for tremendous difference in the temperatures today. south bay temperatures at 58. santa cruz at 54. 60 in campbell. look at cupertino. it is already 63 warm degrees. monsoon moisture working its way into southern california. right now it favors arizona, keeping them hot and humid. that is not something we say all the time but humid is moving into the picture. for us, the fog is cool for some. today, fog, sun, nice by the coast. warm to hot inland. anywhere from 62 to 100 degrees out there. coast and bay, i did drop a little bit. the hottest day glee actress naya rivera continues in southern california after she went missing. this is video showing her renting a boat and preparing for a day on the water with her 4-year-old son. he was found international law and threaten peace efforts. netanyahu announced plans to annex up to 30% of the west bank greeing with premeditated murder's middle east initiative. starting today britain is lifting quarantine restrictions off of dozens of countries, but not the united states. it is expected the lifting of the quarantine rules will increase travel for british people who now won't have to self isolate for 14 days when they come back to britain from the 75 countries that were approved. the list does not include the united states, still considered high risk because of the increasing number of coronavirus cases. the bay area company on the front lines of the fight of the coronavirus has good news. pam cook is here now with today's dollars and sense. >> good to have good news. gilead posted new data of the drug remdizever. it reduced the mortality rate of severely sick patients by 62%. further testing needs to be done but when that opening bell rang, gilead stock rose 30%. on the broader markets, still a lot of concern about the spike we are seeing across the country. that has been affecting wall street a bit as we look live at the new york stock exchange. the dow jones is up. it has hit almost 200 points. on that positive coronavirus treatment news. the airlines is reaching deals and agreement. the nasdaq is down. speaking of the airlines, united has struck its tentative agreement over furloughs and early retirement. that is helping wall street. united is the last of the big four airlines to strike a deal. the union says united sent notices of potential furloughs to more than 3200 # of the 13,000 pilots. no job cuts can be made at any of the airlines until october 1st when federal aid is set to run out. the u.s. and france trying to scale back a trade dispute. an investigation found that a french digital tax discriminated against american tech companies such as apple and google. they will announce today sanctions such as reserving the right to impose half a billion of tariffs on french goods such as champagne and cheese. but for now the u.s. is holding off because france is deferring collecting the digital tax revenue. some sad news from latow, the latest company to file for bankruptcy. the company announced that it will close about half of the 120 stores as it prepares for corporate sale. surlatable says the online sales have seen record growth officials to let them reopen their doors. they were forced to close four months ago. the staff says they have lost $4.5 million because of the pandemic. it has been closed for business but operating costs are high because of the thousands of animals in the aquarium's care. it was set to reopen last week and the last week of june had reopenings delayed by city leaders. now they are asking to be allowed to reopen with safe strict guidelines. we would like to see this as an essential system, not just the aquarium but the zoo. we hold 186 species. we need life support systems. we need our divers, veterinarians, our staff that supports and feeds the animals. >> the aquarium is asking for the public's health by visiting them online and buying merchandise which will help them financially. they also have a gofundme page. in east bay, a little girl is hoping to save the oakland zoo. andy suleered learned that the zoo may have to close permanently. so she started a facebook page and is screen. look at this slow traffic here on 880 headed south out of oakland. you do not want any of this smoke to say what the kids do. look at this backup that kevin is showing us. don't get off the bay bridge and use 880. skip 880 all another and use 580 eastbound. westbound bay bridge recovering from stalls on the bridge. 880 is recovering northbound from an accident at high street. that one appears to be a little better off. there is still slowing there. again, just to reiterate, as i go to steve. you do not want 880 south right now from the maze down to oakland, no, no, no. >> you don't want to go there? >> no, nope. >> all right, thank you. we are looking at a forecast of coast and bay that is a huge difference from inland. could be near 100 degrees inland. very cold buoy temperatures with a northwest wind. but hot stretch inland. it started on wednesday. it will continue all the way into monday and then it looks cooler. i think that it is going to be a little cooler here for a few. it will not be livermore but san francisco, oakland, i graduate the temperatures down 2 to 4 degrees. there will be a slight cooler. there is a much bigger fog bank out there. it did not make much of a push inland. this is going to be confined to the coast and also the bay. a few high clouds from the west, southwest. 50s, low to mid-50s to 60s to 70s. we are already a huge difference here on the spread here closer to the coast. 51 on molina valley. 63 in napa. pretty warm there. there are some cool readings and some that are very warm. we will get a tremendous difference on these highs today. fog, sun, cool and nice by the coast. inland it will be warm to hot to really hot for some. 60s to near 100. i don't think some locations will change much at all. the state of california showed off its vision for high speed trains running between san jose and san francisco. the vision, a 30 minute ride between the two cities on what would be one of the busiest parts of the proposed 520 mile rail system. these bullet trains could go up to 220 miles per hour. the state released the plan despite the fact that the high speed rail project has a very uncertain financial future. california is now the 49th state to launch an antitrust investigation into google. the news site politico reports that they are examining google's practices. the investigation began last september involving 48 states questioning google's online advertising and search engine. alabama is the lone state not investigating google. the iconic notre dame cathedral in paris will be rebuilt just the way it was before last year's devastating fire. the french government has instructed the architects to do everything possible to maintain the cathedral's historic look and design. in doing so, they rejected calls for some of the french artistic community to give it a more modern look. ahead, a suspect is dead, three sheriff's deputies were hurt after a shooting in the long standoff in the east bay. we have the details on what led up to the shooting and how the sheriff's deputies are doing this morning. and another bay area county expected to be added to the coronavirus is friday, july 10th. it is so good to have you. let's talk about this weather. we had a life briefing from governor newsom at noon today. the director of cal fire said we are in the peak of fire season. this is when fires grow quickly and large and they burn overnight. it is a troubling reminder to us all. it is starting earlier and earlier. i still think september and october are the critical months because we get the off shore winds but i know what he means. we are very dry and you get a wind event and everything spreads rapidly. the fuel soils are dry. we have kind of a westerly breeze which helps. there is higher humidity on the coast. that will not help anyone inland. the fog is not making that big of a push. it is summer in july and the fog is near sfo. 50s and 60s on the temperatures. cool coast, hot inland. bigger fog bank by far today compared to yesterday. 90s to near 100 inland. a few high clouds making it down to santa clara valley. vacaville, concord, running warmer than 24 hours ago. sfo and nevado are running cooler. there is no doubt of a dividing line between cooler today and probably a little warmer. fog and sun by the coast. warm and hot inland with highs near 100 yesterday. i don't think that is changing today. the next couple of days will be toasty inland. over to sal now. oakland, what is it, 880. you're right. we have to start in oakland on 880. there is a big crash on 880 near the broadway alameda exit heading south. i put it on your screen. that is 880 headed south. there is a lot of slow traffic headed this way. if you are coming to oakland from san francisco, do not use the alameda 880 exit. use 580 eastbound. bay bridge is beginning to recover from earlier stalls. northbound 880 is beginning to recover after some earlier crashes. now at 8:02, let's go back to the headlines. interstate 580 is open after an overnight fire near north flynn and carol road. a pickup truck crashed into the center divide and burst into flames. the flames spread to brush nearby, closing interstate 580 in both directions. in the last 5 minutes, cal fire says it has it completely contained and all lanes are open. no injuries were reported. now to a developing story, three contra costa county deputies were injured by a suspect in a standoff. this happened in knightson, northeast of brentwood. alyssa, update us on the condition of the deputies who were injured. >> two of the deputies remain hospitalized this morning for their gunshot wounds. they were all members of the swat team. this started as a domestic violence call that turned into a standoff that lasted 11 hours. this happened on the 1700 block of green acres lane in knightson which is northeast of brentwood. sheriff's deputies were called around 9:45 yesterday morning. the victims said the suspect was holding her hostage and threatened to set her on fire. the woman was able to escape the home but the suspect barricaded himself inside. the swat negotiation team tried to get the man to surrender. he exited the home and opened fire on members of the swat team, injuring three of them. deputies returned fire killing the suspect. at this time, we don't know the names of any of the deputies involved or the suspect. the contra costa county sheriff's office is expected to release more information later on today. ktvu has a camera in knightson. i just spoke with my photographer and investigators said they are still on scene. reporting live, i'm alyssa harington on fox ktvu news. new this morning, there is word that sonoma county has been added to california's growing covid-19 watch list. county health leaders have been notified the official declaration from the state should come sometime today. this followed three days of talks between state and county leaders about how to slow the spread of covid-19 in sonoma county. the area has seen a spike in cases in recent weeks. it is expected the state will reimpose restrictions on bars and indoor dining restaurants in sonoma county for at least three weeks. happening today, an online forum hosted by the marin county health department about the coronavirus situation and how the county has responding. marin has seen a big surge in cases, causing the county to be added to the state's watch list. they will not allow indoor dining for three weeks. you can join the zoom call by going to the link section of ktvu.com. inmates recently released from san quentin prison provide a gloomy picture of the covid-19 situation inside the prison. yesterday they took part in a rally outside of the prison. more than 1600 of the 6,000 inmates have been infected. seven inmates have now died from the virus. a demonstration included the reading aloud of letters from inmates and they heard from people just released, talking about the conditions inside. >> scary, dangerous, uncomfortable, unpredictable. >> i'm begging you, to see how we suffer. i'm begging you, to open up your hearts to compassion and not politics. i'm begging you to hear us and please, gavin newsom, save our lives. we are dying in here. >> governor newsom says he will keep reducing the population of the prison. there are tents set up outside of the prison to provide more social distancing. the governor is also addressing the state's record death toll saying people need to cake coronavirus much more seriously. >> for those who think that now people are getting it and no one is dying, that is very misleading. it is fundamentally untrue. california's numbers are reporting over a seven day period, averaging 73, 149 yesterday, a testament to the point, of how deadly the disease continues to be. >> governor newsom says the state is focused on getting help to the counties on the watch list, tolarry, king, los angeles, imperial counties. at this point, more than 342,000 people have tested positive for coin. yesterday there were 7,000 new cases added state wide. 149 people died. the death toll is now more than 6700. here in the bay area, more than 32,000 cases have been reported. an increase of about 1, 636 people have died. at least 45 employees at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital have become infected with covid-19. the number of cases rose at 50% from june 27th to july 6th. in a memo, the hospital's ceo believes the majority of the cases may have come from community spread rather than inside the hospital. still, the hospital is reportedly increasing safety, including opening a new breakroom to allow for more physical distancing. happening today, demonstrators in antioch gather to remember nine men killed in police shootings. there will be a vigil outside of police headquarters. there have ben several weeks of protests in antioch over police brutality and police injustice. is a response to a hiring of a former fran officer who four years ago was involved in a deadly shooting of a homeless man. the city of berkeley may be the nation's first city to assign unarmed transportation agents for traffic stops. this is part of an effort to reassign law enforcement. the burkey city council will debate this issue on tuesday. we have new damage numbers for the cruz fire. cal fire announced the fire grew more than 100 acres overnight. the fire now stands at 5500 acres burned. containment is now at 90%. they hope to have full containment by next thursday. one home was destroyed. there are no more evacuation orders. hot weather is a big deal and steve is talking about that. i just went outside our doors in the studio, sunny and getting hotter by the minute. >> but oakland won't be that bad, dave. i think it will be in the mid-70s, upper 70s. inland it will be 90s to 100. already areas are warmer than yesterday by 5 degrees. by the bay, it is 2 to 4 degrees cooler. there is a big fog bank that came down the coast compared to yesterday. the water temperatures are really cold. san francisco buoy is 51 and bodega bay is 49. inland, no help until early next week. 90s to 100 in vacaville. oakland, half moon bay, nevado are running cooler. the city made it to 52 which is cooler than average. 50s for some and 60s to 70s for some. mid-70s for some. almost 70 in sacramento as well. 94 in phoenix already. the fog and low clouds will mean slight cooling on the coast but upper 90s to near 100 again. i don't see anything stopping that now. huge difference with the highs. a few upper 50s would not surprise me to 100 degrees for some. this will continue all the way into sunday. it could be a slight pull back on saturday. that's kind of a wish counterparts in beijing to set the scope for an intermaegzal mission to find out how the virus jumped from animals to humans. the investigation comes as the u.s. has cut ties with the w.h.o.. more than 120 countries have called for an investigation into covid-19. a german company working with pfizer says it is confident that the vaccine will be ready for regulatory approval by december. it is one of 17 firms that is already starting human trials on vaccine candidates. an earlier stage of the trial showed better than expected results with no serious side effects. scientists say they believe the mechanism by which most of the potential vaccines work mean they would be easier and cheaper to manufacture than most vaccines. gilead has released new data that shows their antiviral drug significantly reduces the mortality rate of covid-19. gilead produces the drug remdesivir which is a promising treatment option for coronavirus. data from a clinical trial showed it reduces the risk of death in covid-19 patients by 62%. the company however cautions that these findings will need further confirmation in additional trials. it is 8:17. the san jose earthquake soccer team plays their first game in months this evening. the quakes will play the top seeded seattle sounder fc in the mls's back tournament in orlando florida. the two teams are among the big league soccer teams playing early june. on june 19th, she was admitted to the hospital and intubeited at 28 weeks pregnancy. doctors hold her husband that the baby was not getting enough oxygen and they needed to perform an emergency c-section to save the baby. she was born premature and is getting stronger every day. the mother's condition is getting worse. doctors say they can't get another treatment that might help because she has been on a ventilator too long. her husband helps sharing the story will somehow help her get the treatment she needs. santa clra county will allow gyms to reopen. but they must comply improvement at this time. 8:31, let's go back to the headlines. it is only the middle of july but it is time to talk about back to school is in the fall. several bay area school districts are about a month away from opening schools but how will that look in the new covid-19 world? frank is here now to tell us what oakland unified will tell us later this morning. it is going to happen around noon today. 37,000 oakland students, parents, and teachers alike all awaiting today's preliminary plans. summer flew by. the oakland school doors open in just 31 days, august 10th will be day number one. oakland unified is working through a number of scenarios for how the first day will look, not to mention the rest of the your. they took the public's input with over 1,000 families taking part. 50% of parents surveyed likes the idea of distance learning and half at school. 53% were in favor of a day in school followed by a day at home. we will learn about face coverings, thermometer checks and how they will keep the classrooms sanitized and of course safety is priority number one. parents are concerned. earlier this week, some of the parents and district staff members held a car caravan to voice opinions, demanding schools remain closed during the pandemic. planning the school year will be more difficult because $35 billion needs to be cut out of the budget. the superintendent said quote, it is the worst reduction to education since the great recession. so lots of moving parts to plan and get together. all subject to change in alameda county if the state cases continue to climb. there are currently 7300 in the county alone. we hope to have more for you in the noon show coming up. that is the latest. >> thank you. the largest school district in sonoma county is moving closer to approving a road map for reopening. santa rosa city schools trustees say the plan allows for flexibility to address changes amid the pandemic. it appears likely that the school year will start next month with all of the district's 16,000 students learning from home. the antioch school district has approved a decision to push back to school year by a month. the district voted to switch to a traditional school schedule with a september 1 start date. there will be a mixture of distance learning. the cdc is set to reissue more guidelines. this comes after health officials said they will not revise guidelines despite criticism from president trump. the current guidelines suggest that teachers and students wear mask, eating meals in the classroom, and spread out desks, and have physical barriers between bathroom sinks. there is yet another problem facing school districts across the country. they are reporting a serious shortage of substitute teachers. schools have a difficult time finding substitutes during normal times. now the need for substitutes is greater than ever as schools prepare for sick days during the pandemic. the substitute teachers must now be trained in online learning at many schools. the time is now 8:36. a couple in martinez is facing hate crimes charges for defacing a black lives matter mural and now they are telling their side of the story. david and nicole nelson were found painting over a mural hours after it was completed. they went on fox news with tucker carlson and said they are being treated unfairly. >> this is the double standard and the hypocrisy of the whole thing. it is okay for blm to go down and burn down the country, terrorize america, actually kill people. they have done more harm than they have done good. >> if convicted, both could face up to a year in jail. in the meantime, in martinez there is an uneasy feeling because dueling protests are planned for this coming sunday. this morning we talked to a restaurant owner who said businesses in the area are taking safety precautions to protect their properties and their staff. the family owned restaurant will close down early on saturdays so they can board up the building and keep everyone safe. >> everyone is actually pretty scared. there has been a whole bunch of protests in martinez before but since this is one of the biggest ones we will have, we don't know how it will go. >> police in martinez expect several thousand people to take part in the dueling protests between a group of white supremeicists and people protesting against them. federal health officials are tieg to decide who will get to first doses of covid-19 vaccines when they become available. according to a preliminary plan, national officials will be first. other essential workers, elderly,
