Today napa the company says it has recorded its first cases of coronavirus, the last bay area county to report a case. The Napa County Department of Public Health made that announcement today. Specifics were not released, but the Health Department says one patient is in isolation in the city of napa and a legal order was issued for the close contacts of the patient in quarantine. Another case was confirmed in st. Helena. Public Health Officials say the two cases are not connected. As of today, there are more than 32,000 confirmed cases in the United States and more than 400 deaths. Of those cases nationwide 178 people have recovered. In california there are more than 1,700 cases and 30 three deaths. Here in the bay area there are 786 reported cases and the death toll has gone up to 13 after two more deaths in Santa Clara County. This afternoon President Trump said he activated the National Guard in california, washington and new york. Those are the three states that have been hit the hardest by the coronavirus. Through fema the federal government will be funding 100 of the cost of deploying National Guard units to carry out approved missions, to stop the virus while those governors remain in command. So the governors locally are going to be in command and well be following them and we hope they can do the job and i think they will. President trump also said that hes directed fema to supply eight federal medical stations with 2,000 beds for california, new york and the state of washington also getting several medical stations with 1,000 beds. Well, if you are sick but have not been able to get a coronavirus test, you now have a new option. Starting tomorrow morning the city of hayward is offering free tests for coronavirus for anyone showing symptoms of the illness. For at least the next month, but officials in hayward stress this service should be reserved for people who are sick and are showing symptoms. The swabbing will occur in here. Reporter Chuck Sweeney with the city of hayward shows us the Testing Center at fire station 7 on huntwood avenue. Its free and will provide covid19 tests on the spot. The Testing Center is open to any Community Member any age regardless of income, immigration status, Health Insurance status. We are open to any member of the public. Reporter city manager kelly mcadoo hopes the site will take some pressure off hospital Emergency Rooms and provide answers for people who are sick but have not been able to get a test. Healthcare workers and First Responders who may have been exposed to the virus can be tested as well. Heres how it works. Firefighters and paramedics will prescreen people as they arrive. Those who drive can stay in their cars for this part. Those who are showing symptoms like fever or coughing will go to a tent. Youll be screened by a First Responder and determined whether or not a test is warranted. At that point you will receive the test which is nose and cheek swab and youll be asked to go home and stay in isolation in your home until the test results come back. Reporter results should be ready in six to 12 hours. Avavellino labs out of menlo park is providing 350 tests per day. Only those who feel sick should come. Everyone else needs to stay home to prevent the virus from spreading further. Number one message, if youre well and wonder, this is not the place for you. This is for symptomatic patients concerned they might be carrying the covid19 virus. If youre not symptomatic, we will not test you for covid19. We have recognize theres a lot of fear and nervousness in the community, but we would ask in order to sort of minimize the overwhelm of capacity we have here that only if youre facing symptoms. Reporter police will be out here tomorrow to control the area. They are expecting very large crowds. There will be traffic control. The road will be blocked in front of the firehouse. The city of hayward said anyone else concerned but not able to get a test should call a new hotline they launched and will be staffed seven days a week. I just wanted to double check, the testing, is that only for people who live in hayward or can anyone come there and get the test . Reporter anyone can come here to get the test. You do not have to live in hayward. You dont need Health Insurance. You dont need a doctors note. You just need to come here and be exhibiting symptoms that they believe could be coronavirus. The department is reporting that 23 cases impacted children under 17 years old. 1,066 cases were reported in people between the ages 18 and 64 and 369 cases were reported in people over the age of 65. 10 cases did not have an age of the person who was reporting it. The California Department of Public Health is also reporting how californians infected with coronavirus ended up getting sick. 113 cases were related to travel. 145 cases were person to person contact. 408 cases were from Community Transmission and 778 cases are skill under investigation. Republican senator rand paul became the first u. S. Senator to test positive for the coronavirus. His staff announced today that the senator will remain in quarantine in his homestate of kentucky. Now according to his spokesperson, paul had been at the senate gym just this morning before learning of his diagnosis and then flying home. The senator wasnt showing any symptoms but was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events. Senator paul has reportedly had no contact with his staff who have been working from home now for the past 10 days. Opera star Placido Domingo is in selfisolation after testing positive for the virus. He said he got tested after experiencing a fourth as well as a cough, but overall he says he and his family are in good health. Domingo urged everyone to be extremely careful and above all, stay home. German chancellor Angela Merkel is in quarantine now after her doctor tested positive for coronavirus. Merkel learned about her dr. s diagnosis today, two days after he had given her a precautionary vaccine against pneumonia. Her office said the chancellor will be tested regularly in the coming days while carrying out her duties from home. Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has reportedly tested positive for covid19. The niagra gazette in albany, new york, reported the Development Today citing officials connected to the state prison system. The newspaper reports the 68 yearold is being isolated at a correctional facility in western new york. Weinstein is currently serving a 23 Year Prison Sentence for rape and sexual assault. Weinsteins Public Relations chief told deadline that, our team has not heard anything like that yet. Variety also spoke to an attorney for weinstein and his Prison Consultant who both said they could not confirm that report. Santa clara county said today that two more people there have died from coronavirus. One was a woman in her 60s, the other a woman in her 40s. 10 people in Santa Clara County have now died from coronavirus. Thats the most of any county in the bay area. Also today the county released more information on how theyre dealing with the surge in cases of coronavirus. Hospitals say they have about 2,500 beds including about 400 beds for children, but theyre working to get more. Today the head of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center stressed the importance of social distancing and good hygiene to stop the spread. If, in fact, were able to flatten the can everybody and slow the spread, then our Healthcare System will be able to manage much more effectively. If, in fact, were unable to do that, i will tell you we should all be concerned. The county also said today that theyre working with the federal government to set up a field medical unit with 238 beds at the Convention Center in Santa Clara County. That unit would be for patients who are not infected with covid 19 in order to allow hospitals to care for the people who do have the coronavirus. A group of med students has organized a donation drive to collect masks, gowns and other Vital Equipment thats really needed now in bay area hospitals. Starting tomorrow they will collect item at ucsf mt. Zions Medical Center in san francisco, the ucsf Mission Center and benioff Childrens Hospital in oakland. They need unused and used n95 respirator masks and gloves and more, the drive 8 a. M. To 5 p. M. Every day. Berkeley had a live event to ask for donations online to help people who lost their jobs during this health crisis. How are we going to make sure workers who rely on these jobs are able to continue to pay the rent and not become homeless . These are serious questions many of us have been asking. We want this action to send a message to visitors and residents alike that we appreciate their love for hawaii, but at this time we believe that our community is very, very important and we need to come together as a community to fight this virus. The u. S. Army has also announced that a soldier with the 25th Infantry Battalion based in hawaii has tested positive for coronavirus. Its the first case linked to the army in hawaii. For the first time the International Olympic committee admitted today that they are considering postponing the summer games in tokyo. The ioc released a statement saying theyre working with japanese authorities to assess the coronavirus pandemic and they say postponement could now be an option. A Worldwide Group represented olympic hopefuls is calling on the ioc to postpone the summer games until the coronavirus pandemic is under control. The ioc says the decision could be four weeks away. The Marriott Hotel chain plans to furlough thousands of its corporate employees. The wall street journal reports the furlough will affect roughly twothirds of marriotts 4,000 employees at its maryland headquarters and thousands of others around the world. They will all receive 20 of their salary during the furlough which is expected to last at least 90 days. There are 40 Marriott Hotels here in the bay area. Sections of point reyes are closed today to stop people from violating the statewide stay at home order. The Marin County Sheriffs Department went on social media today to call attention to all the people where coming to the coast but failing to practice social distancing. Gates are closing at main roads including drakes beach and mount vision road. Access will be limited in other areas of the National Seashore as well. Were meeting people for a walk thats six feet apart. Reporter saturday in the bay area, though, was a little rough. We really need to approach this more seriously. Reporter the Marin County Sheriffs Office tweeted this photo of a line of cars traveling to the coast. It prompted authorities to close some beaches and yet another warning from Health Officials. It ends up defying the purpose of the order because theres so many people gathering in one place. Reporter governor gavin newsom announced an executive order to allow the state to increase healthcare capacity. He wants to set up 10,000 extra hospital beds in hotels and Convention Centers because newsom says if people dont take preventive measures, 56 of the states population or 22 Million People could get coronavirus within the next two months.
