But those evacuation orders have now been lifted, and most evacuees have returned home. Federal Health Officials now say there are 67 confirmed cases of suspected e. Coli contamination linked to romaine lettuce from salinas. Those illnesses happened in 19 states. The majority in wisconsin. 39 people had to be hospitalized and 6 suffered kidney failure. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported. The cdc is investigating the cause. Patrick bauer joins me now live. We mentioned there is an investigation to try to pinpoint what the cause is. But how does, you know, romaine lettuce become contaminated in the first place . Yes, of course. E. Coli, including the types implicated in the current outbreak, generally lives in the guts of livestock, like cows. It can travel via a variety of passageways. Equipment, or potentially manure, Something Like that on different sorts of animals. What weve seen in the previous couple of outbreaks that weve had in romaine lettuce, is tracing the contamination likely back to an Irrigation Water source. Its too early to tell with this particular outbreak, but with the previous two, thats what we think. If it is an irrigation source, what do you do to stop it . Well, the state officials who are in charge of managing food safety, and our federal Health Officials at the fda, and the industry itself has been pursuing a variety of avenues to keep it in the growing environment. There is a lot of of work being put into testing water. Theres a lot of work being put into options for treating that waterer, as it comes out of the source reservoirs, and goes into the field as well. At this point, its too late, so really focusing on a lot of prevention efforts. This is a big hit to the industry. Very much so. For folks at home who might be, you know, wanting romaine, or have it in their refrigerator, what do you advise them to do . Well, i think that following the fda, and cdc guidance is the best course of action right now. If you go onto the ftc website, they would advise that people not consume any romaine lettuce. The industry has been voluntarily pursuing labeling. So there should be a label on the package that clearly states where the romaine is grown. If theres not such a label, the cdc and fda is recommending people discard that. The recommendations are to clean the refrigerator, and drawers, any sort of surface on which that romaine might have been stored or prepared. Because again, the contamination might spread in the home. Thats good advice. I sort of expected once i got rid of the lettuce, the potential problem was over. You mentioned those other outbreaks. It does seem to happen to romaine lettuce. Leafy greens. Why is that . Is it specifically because of the irrigation . Theres a couple of specific elements of the physiology of romaine lettuce that make it potentially more susceptible. Again the science is sort of out on this. But lettuce in general has very wide surface areas. Its also consumed raw. Thats one of the health benefits. That means theres no steps that would kill any e. Coli or something. Also, lettuce is one of the most highly consumed vegetables in the american market. I just looked this up earlier today, Something Like 2 billion pounds of romaine lettuce moves through the u. S. Market every year. Wow. So its a massive volume, it moves a long way, very quickly. People eat a lot of it. Patrick, really appreciate you coming in. If you do have romaine lettuce, make sure you check that label and get rid of it. Already republicans are calling the next phase unfair. Im kevin court, traveling with the president here in west palm beach. Ive got that story and much more coming right up. He couldve just been the middle class kid who made good.
