mark of 72 in 1982. livermore goes back to 1913. record-setting day. high pressure and an off shore breeze coming out of the oakland berkeley hills here. at the surface, there isn't much. a puff of a breeze around san francisco and oakland but mainly in the santa cruz mountains. 40s and 50s on your temps. some are mild already. looking like a mostly day for everybody and warm as high pressure has anchored itself. it's not going anywhere any time soon. it looks dry and warm out to the temps. 70s for nearly everybody. sal, what do you have at 7:02? still quiet. >> there's a problem on 880, steve. >> okay. >> i'm going to start there. not an injury crash but nevertheless it is a crash. northbound 880 at 5th and embarcadero. look at the backup from way back at the coliseum. the crash will be blocking -- at least it was blocking one lane. and there's flashing lights and that kind of thing. and traffic on 880 will be slow. so if you're driving up to downtown oakland, maybe you should think about using westbound 580 and avoiding 880 for the time being. continues a good commute. at first i thought it would be a minor backup but it's turning into anything but. 580 is a good alternate. let's talk about the bay bridge. you can see that is backed up all the way to the maze. metering lights are on. this is about a 15 to 20-minute delay. san jose traffic is moderate getting out to the highrise. look at the visibility here. you can see all the way to the san mateo county hills there. if you're looking at the dumbarton bridge, you can use that as well. that looks good over to east palo alto. 7:03. back to the desk. >> straight to the south bay as three schools in one san jose district will be closing. it is due to declining enrollment. christien kafton is live at glider elementary, which is one of the three schools set to close, christien. >> reporter: yes, gasia. we are at glider elementary. this is one of the schools slated to close. the oak grove school district voted to close three schools effective with the 2018-2019 school year. in the past parents have weighed in on the proposal to close schools. the board says the decision came after lengthy deliberation and, quote, with great reluctance. they have seen a declining number of students, losing about 1,000 students in all. the board will have another meeting on march 1st. they hope to have the details worked out about which students will be attending which schools. in the past, parents have expressed concerns about driving students to the schools within the district. this will take place in 20918- 20 -- 2018-2019 school year. the following statement was issued by the superintendent. now, the district is saying it will send additional information home with students today, with more details about the school closures. we are waiting for students to arrive here this morning. that's one of the reasons i was looking over my shoulder, to see if parents were arriving so we could get a sense of how the community feels knowing this is one of the school that's is slated to close. back to you, gasia. >> you're right. your child's school is essentially your own community. certainly a lot of heavy hearts there this morning. christien. >> reporter: yes. we're expecting we will find that once the parents start arriving to drop kids off, we will get feedback from them and see where they will be sending their students, if they received information about where the kids will be going. these are important details for the families. >> very much so. thank you, christien. overall a new report of california says the state is failing when it comes to education, child care and health care for children, especially for those from low income families. the report issued by children now gives the state a grade of b plus for school based health services. a d for academic outcomes and a d plus for infant and toddler care. the president of children now tells the mercury news that the findings are alarming because california is not a poor state. california got a grade of a in the category of health insurance, saying more children in our state are eligible for affordable health coverage because of medi-cal. 77 northern california businesses have been ordered by federal immigration officials to prove that their employees are authorized to work here in the u.s. employers have three days to show evidence and proof that their employees are in the country i willly. businesses in san jose and sacramento received the notices. a spokesman for ice says this shows the stepped up enforcement of laws for hiring undocumented workers. last month ice agents raided 7- eleven stores all over the country, including here in the bay area. today president trump is expected to approve the release of a controversial memo about the russia investigation. it is a four-page memo by california congressman david nunes. it alleges fbi misconduct in it's investigation of possible ties between russia and president trump's presidential campaign. the president believes the memo will prove the russia investigation is a witch hunt. now, the fbi has urged the white house to keep that memo classified, saying the fbi has grave concerns about the accuracy of the memo. we're going to bring you a live report from washington with a lot more at 7:30. new this morning, the father of three daughter who's were abused by dr. larry nassar tried to attack the disgraced former sports doctor during a court hearing in michigan. >> i can't do that. >> you know that i can't do that. that's not how our legal system -- >> the father initially told the judge he wanted five minutes in a locked room with nassar. as he lunged at him, he got close to nassar. he is subdued by court officers and taken away in handcuffs. two of the men's daughters had given statements earlier in the morning in court. the judge called a brief recess but testimony from the victims have since resumed. more than 30 victims have given statements in the case. it focuses on nassar's work with a gymnastics club. during a similar hearing last week, more than 150 victims testified. the time is 7:08. back here at home, five people in san francisco, including a small child, had to flee their home early this morning after a fire spread from a house that was under construction to one where that family was sleeping inside. this all started just after 3:00 this morning on fulton street. right across from the famous painted lady's house. the crews are still out there. they're looking for hot spots. alarm fire was contained about 3:30 this morning. no one was hurt. firefighters are inspenting the building that is under construction to see how the fire started. investigators plan to use fingerprints as well as dna evidence to track down a man who hit and dragged an alameda sheriff's deputy in hayward yesterday. the deputy ended up shooting at the suspect. it started near west a street and harbor avenue. the deputy was on a motorcycle when he tried to pull over a stolen suv for speeding near west a and harbor. the deputy says the driver stopped briefly but then backed the suv into the motorcycle while the deputy was still on it. the deputy was dragged. and the driver tried to run the deputy over. that's when investigators say the officer opened fire. investigators don't know if the man was hit. after the suspect ran the suv into the deputy, he drove a few blocks away to royal avenue, ditched the car and ran. law enforcement searched for about three and a half hours but did not find the suspect. the deputy suffered minor injuries to his arm and happened. an undercover san francisco police officer was rammed by a car yesterday as he tried to arrest a suspect in a car break- in near alamo square park. the officer was in the process of arresting a man who he saw break the window of a parked car at hayes and pierce streets just before noon. the driver of a black infinity connected to the suspect rammed the officer. we're told that the officer's injuries are not life threatening. the driver of the infinity hit another suspect during a police chase before crashing that car at haite and buchanan streets. >> saw a black infinity hit a prius at the intersection. after hitting the prius, the people -- or the car went on and two people jumped out and both split up into two different directions. both going opposite directions. and i believe the infinity rolled down to hit a couple more cars down haite. >> two people who ran from the car are in custody now. the suspect who was hit by the car was also arrested and was taken to the hospital. a west oakland business is accused of polluting the air and water. information on the lawsuit and the impact on people living in that neighborhood. also cape town, south africa could run out of water in the next 90 days. up next, restrictions underway to try to prevent this unprecedented crisis. interstate 880 is kind of a mess in oakland. we have a couple things going on. first of all, northbound there was a crash heading up to downtown. now there is something on the frontage road that i believe is holding up traffic in the southbound direction. we will give you alternate routes when we come back. if you're thinking this might be a good weekend to get out and wash the windows, maybe -- maybe not this extreme, but it will be sunny. charges that include battery and child cruel tee. he was arrested at the berkeley bart station at 9:30 on wednesday morning. the child accidentally bumped into him on a richmond bound train when he was with his father. and benson then punched the little boy. new water restrictions in cape town, south africa. the city is getting closer to completely running out of water after three years of a severe drought. known as day zero, authorities expect the water reservoirs to run dry by the middle of april. residents and visitors can now only use 13 gallons of water a day or they could be fined. compare that the average american uses 88 gallons of water a day. some people are now getting their water from natural springs. others are lining up at emergency water stations set up around cape town. >> i do hope that the government is doing something to prevent day zero. it will be a national crisis. it will be horrific when ground zero comes. >> now, cape town, south africa could become the first major city in the world to lose its water supply because of a drought. they are building water sal nation plants and recycling programs. if it runs dry, the government will only deliver water to the most essential services like hospitals. the time is 7:17. we did have friday light up to 7:00, right, school? >> that's right. every time that something happens on the roads, it creates a traffic jam. let's talk about interstate 880. there are a couple thing going on. northbound 880 which is on the left here, you saw that there was a crash right near 5th street. that crash is gone. now there has been some sort of patrol car sitting here at the on-ramp to southbound 880. and you can see the traffic here is slowing down because, you know, the blue and red lights attracting people. i'm not sure what is going on there. but the traffic on the northbound side has re- -- is beginning to recover after that crash northbound 880 at 5th is cleared. it was worse than this just a few moments ago. so maybe the light volume is helping us out. if this were a wednesday, i think we would see that backup here. the bay bridge is backed up for 15 to 20 minutes before you make it on to the span. if you're driving on southbound 880, it is better today than yesterday from hayward to fremont. san jose traffic, we have some slowdowns but the silicon valley commute looks lighter than usual. 7:18. clouds. that won't mean anything. we have enough high pressure aloft to give us an off shore breeze. there will be a system moving in i think eastern nevada on tuesday, which will kind of give us a cooldown and pick up the breeze. but no rain expected out of that. yesterday was a record setting day. today will be close for many. santa cruz is 76. it looks warm but the record is 83. 1976. remember that. san jose would be a record. that beat 73. there is the 1976 again. santa rosa 76 would tie 1982. and san rafael, 73, while warm is four short of the record in 1976. february 2nd, the average high for east san jose, using data, is 62. the next three days, the forecast is for 76, 77 and 77. so, yes, when you're 15 degrees above average, that is pretty warm and you will set records. san francisco climate data, speaking of 76. we will go back to the rain year, not the water year, july 1st to january 30th. the season total was, if you were here back then, you remember that. .75 to '78 was very dry. february 1976, the first three days we set record highs. the total precip that month was 1.96. on february 5th, 1976, it snowed. santa cruz was 80 degrees on february 3rd, 1976. two days later, it snowed. things can change fast. is there any sign of that happening? not yet. nothing through the 10th. the possibility of an inside slider on the 12th. as far as widespread rain, we have to wait a while. things can change. they can change fast but really no sign of anything out to the 16th or 17th. maybe though some hints. there are a few. today, no. 50s and 60s already. some of that easterly breeze will make it over to the coast. 40s and 50s on the peninsula. 59 los altos hills. 58 pacifica. for some, it is already warm. monterey is already 56 degrees. the cool air settled in over the northern plains and great lakes. minneapolis, the high on sunday will be 9. but they're playing indoors. dry to warm for us through february 10th. there might be a weak system on tuesday. doing better than wall street expected. >> he is day lauder and merck beat the street this morning. the opening bell was also melt with a jobs report that was better than expected. the labor department says 200,000 jobs were added last month. we will talk more about that in just a moment. interest rates heading higher though as well. and that is a big reason why the dow is down. here is a live look. down more than one full percentage point. 25,909. the s&p 500 and nasdaq following suit down as well. also a bit of profit taking going on. we've had record runs. and there is a lot of uncertainty in washington, d.c. again, i say a lot. wall street does not like uncertainty of any kind in the economy. the labor department says u.s. businesses added 200,000 jobs last month. that's the good news. keeping the unemployment rate at 4.1%. in addition to maintaining that low rate, wages rose at the fastest pace in more than eight years. the pay gains indicate employers are likely having to compete for a smaller pool of workers. raises and bonuses from the minimum wage increase in 18 states and the republican tax cuts also likely boosting the figures. this is the ninth straight year that the u.s. economy has expanded. more super bowl ads are being released ahead of the big game. one of the favorites is danny devito becoming the red m&m. >> sometimes i wish i was human. >> this morning. it is not your imagination. if you have been with us for a while, i started talking about this crash a while ago. i thought it would be gone by now. they're having an issue getting it out of the lanes. and traffic is backed up on 680 and 242. very slow. it's also beginning to affect highway 4. remember, this commute had been nice and light. but when there's a crash, all bets are off there. after the walnut creek interchange, it looks good into danville. still looks like 880 is recovering from some earlier things here. 580 is getting a little slow approaching the lake shore curve. i would still use 580. bay bridge backup is backed up to the maze. 20 to 25-minute delay. san mateo bridge heavy out to the peninsula, which has been relatively quiet as you can see. a little has given hints that he plans to release this document. and we think it could happen today. and we will find out perhaps whether this thing has been overhyped, oversold or whether there is something explosive there. president trump speaking at a gop dinner here in washington. but he didn't mention what everyone around here has been talking about, the secret republican drafted memo from congress that is said to lay out a case against surveillance in the investigation into the trump campaign. the president should decided to whether to sign off on the release. >> he is all about transparence. he wants these things to come out. he believes that sunlight is best in this situation. >> reporter: the fbi none too pleased. in fact james comey fired by the president tweeted this: all should appreciate the fbi speaking up. i wish more of our leaders would. take heart, american history shows in the long run weasels and liars never hold the field as long as good people stand up. in congress this has predictably broken down along party lines. >> if he released the memo, he would not only be endangering our country but also be violating the rules of the congress of the united states. >> it is our job as a legislative branch of government to conduct oversight if there were abuses made. >> it is a tough call. at this point everything has to be released. >> reporter: and by everything, we're talking about not just the republican memo that the president may release today but there is a democratic memo as well that is kind of percolating its way through congress. there may even be an fbi response to all of this. the fbi generally doesn't respond to criticism. but in this instance, dave and gasia, they may make an exception. >> all right. doug luzader from washington. thank you. the time is 7:35. police in los angeles say yesterday's shooting at a middle school where five people were wounded was an accident. the 12-year-old girl was arrested and booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm on school grounds. it went off when she dropped the back pack. a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist. and a boy was shot in the head. two other students and a teacher were hurt in the commotion afterwards. no word how she got the gun. if it came from an adult in her home, there may be more charges in the case. uc davis researchers hope to sign up wildfire survivors for an online survey of what they experienced. it will gain the personal experiences, household circumstances and health effects from the devastating wildfires. the questionnaire is part of a larger study of health and environmental hazards that existed during and after the fires. uc davis scientists hope to look at short and long-term effects of exposure to flames and smoke and stress of the north bay wildfires could prove to be a dangerous obstacle. all new electric garage doors would have to have a battery backup. that would allow the door to be open if there was a fire or other disaster and the power is out. at least five deaths were related to garage doors that would not open because of power being knocked out during the north bay fires. the time is 7:37. beer lovers, they're camped out of the russian river brewing company in santa rosa waiting for the beer called pliny the younger. >> alex savidge is live up in santa rosa to explain what makes this beer so ipa. and the russian river brewing company only makes it once a year. and they release it once a year here in february, the beginning of february. and that's why you have beer lovers from all over the world camped out here. these ladies -- you're waiting for super cuts to open here. >> yeah. >> reporter: when i first walked up shall that's what they told me. they didn't know what line they were in. you are from idaho. >> yes. >> reporter: and you come all the way here for this beer. >> yes. this is our sixth year. we started off from southern california and started coming up here. now we all describe this. you've had it before. you've been here a number of years. what makes the beer so special? a lot of people can't put it into words? >> gosh. kind of taken up a habit of beer tasting and traveling around to meet at different breweries. besides the tradition of it and getting together and that kind of thing, the social aspect of it, this particular beer. this is sackrilidge. don't like ipas. >> a lot of heads just turned. >> i know. this is exceptional. it is different than the other ones i've had. i like a lot of the other beers they have as well. >> reporter: but it is part of the tradition for you. i appreciate you talking to us. and this line by the way goes all the way down the block and around the corner. hundreds of people already here. i would say at least 200 people already lined up. some of them got here yesterday afternoon, about 3:00 in the afternoon. the people who are first in line showed up at 3:00 in the afternoon. of course pliny the younger rose to fame, i guess you could say, back in 2010. caught the attention of beer lovers who gave it high marks. from then on, the beer that they, again, only make once a year start today draw huge crowds here at the russian river brewing company in downtown santa rosa. the folks in line will be able to enjoy three 10-ounce glasses of pliny the younger once they're allowed inside. the beer will be here on tap for the next two weeks. but dave and gasia, if you plan on coming down or when you come down, i should say, make sure that you give yourself plenty of time. because the wait is going to be long here for super bowl. that's up 8 and a half percent from last year. on average, super bowl fans are expected to spend $81 on food and drinks for super bowl parties. the younger you are, the more you will spend. they say if you're between 25 and 34 years old, you will be spending on average $118. in the meantime, singer and actor justin timberlake goes back to the stage for what will be his record third super bowl halftime show. he appeared with janet jackson, remember, in 2004. he also performed with in sync in 2001. he met the media yesterday but didn't give up any real clues about what he will do. he talked about who would be joining him on stage. >> there's a whole list. i think vegas has a lot of odds on it, i heard. you know, from 'n sync to jay to january he will. this year, i'm plunging back into drought. severely dry conditions now exist in santa barbara, ventura and los angeles counties. 44% of our state is now considered to be in a moderate drought, a dramatic increase well, the women fought back in what they say was an intense fight for their life. they beat him with portable folding tables. workers from a nearby business also rushed over and held down that suspect possible. it has been there for an hour. and traffic has not recovered. it had been a light commute. then that crash was there for a long time. finally they have the lanes open but the traffic is still slow getting to walnut creek. if that's your commute, give yourself extra time. however, if you are on 80 westbound, it is not the same. it actually looks lighter today from vallejo down to richmond. it slows in richmond. 580 and 880 are slow getting into oakland. a normal thing. helped along by crashes to be honest. westbound bay bridge looks okay. waiting at the teleplays a that is a 15 to 20-minute delay. 8:02. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. three schools in one san jose school district will be closing. it is part of a consolidation plan due to declining enrollment. >> christien kafton is live at glider elementary, one of the schools that will close. have you had a chance to talk to parents there. >> reporter: we were hoping to do that but parents are just arriving here. class doesn't start until 8:30. this is about the time that parents start to show up here. this one of the three schools that oak grove school district has vote today close along with dell roblo and miner school. this effective in the 2018-2019 school year. parents have been weighing in on the proposal to close schools in the district. the board says the decision came after lengthy deliberation and with great reluctance. they have seen a decline in students, losing about 1,000 students in all. the board will have another meeting in march, on march 1st. the board is hoping at that time that it will have more details about which students will be attending which schools. in the past, parents have ex presenced the drive time concerns of driving their students to other schools. the school district notified families yesterday in a statement that reads in part the following. >> the district is saying it will be sending home additional information with students today, with more details about those closures. as we said, gasia, you know, schools really are about community. you really gain a sense of community through your school. you can see parents now just starting to arrive. all of this happening since we started setting up for a live report here. we have not had a chance to talk to the parents. once we're wrapped up here, we will try to speak with some parents and get their take on how this is affecting them and their plans for their children's education. >> a tough situation. thank you, christien. a new report says that california is fail building it comes to education, child care and health care for children, especially for those from low income families. it was released by children now. it gives the state a grade of d plus for school-based health services. a grade of d for academic outcomes and a d plus for infant and toddler care. the president of children now tells the mercury news that the findings are alarming because california is not a poor state. california did get a grade of a in the category of health insurance because more children in the state are eligible for affordable health coverage because of medi-cal. the superintendent is reminding schools to test for lead in drinking water. he sent a message to all districts yesterday saying public schools built before 2010 have to get their water tested. last year governor jerry brown signed a bill to complete lead testing in the older schools by july 1st of 2019. if lead levels are more than 15 parts per billion, the school district will be required to shut down the faucets until the problem is taken care of. this week federal immigration agents ordered 77 northern california businesses to provide proof that their employees are authorized to work in the united states. employers have three days now to provide paperwork on the employees, proving they're here in the u.s. legally. businesses in san francisco, san jose and sacramento received the notices. they say it reflects stepped up enforcement of laws that bars companies from hiring undocumented workers. they raided 7-eleven stores last month across the country, including here in the bay area. today president trump is expected to release a memo about the investigation. the four-page memo by california congressman david nunes alleges fbi misconduct in its investigation of potential ties between russia and trump's presidential campaign. he believes the memo will prove that the investigation is a witch hunt. the fbi has urged the white house to keep the memo confidenttial. new this morning, dramatic video we're about to share shows a daughter of three daughters who were sexually abused by larry nassar, lunging at him during a court hearing in michigan. >> i can't do that. >> one minute. >> you know that i can't do that. that's not how our legal system -- >> well -- >> oh. >> the father initially told the judge he wanted five minutes in a locked room with nassar. he got pretty close to nassar before he was subdued by court officers ask taken away in handcuffs. two of his daughters had given statements earlier this morning in court. the judge called a brief recess but testimony from the victims has since resumed. more than 30 victims have given statements in the case which focuses on his work with an elite gymnastics club. during a similar hearing last week, more than 150 women and girls testified. investigators plan to use fingerprints and dna evidence to track down a man who they say hit and dragged an alameda county sheriff's deputy in hayward yesterday. the deputy ended up shooting at the suspect. it started near west a street and harbor avenue. the deputy was on a motorcycle when he tried to pull over a stolen suv for speeding. the driver stopped briefly but backed the suv into the motorcycle while the deputy was still on it. the deputy ended up getting dragged. the suspect tried to run the deputy over again and that's when the officer opened fire. investigators don't know if the man was hit. authorities say after the suspect rammed the suv into the deputy, he drove a few blocks and ditched the car and ran. law enforcement searched for about three and a half hours but never found him. the deputy suffered minor injuries to his arm and hand. an undercover san francisco police officer was also struck by a vehicle yesterday while trying to arrest a suspect near alamo square park. he was in the process of arresting a man who he saw break the window of a parked vehicle just before noon time. the driver of a black infiniti rammed the officer. the officer's injures are not considered life threatening. the driver hit another suspect during a police chase before crashing the vehicle at haite and buchanan. a 19-year-old has has been arrested on suspicion of punching a 5-year-old boy on a bart train. he was arrested at the berkeley station around 9:30 wednesday morning. police say the child accidentally bumped into him on a richmond bound train with his upper skyline. there is an overturned truck right here. the traffic volume had been light. now there's a backup. if you're trying to drive out of half moon bay, you will have to factor that in. or go out the pacifica way because of the crash. going in as well from let's say 280 over to half moon bay. going that way on 92 is going to be slower than usual because of that truck accident. the east bay commute has been slow. 880 and 580 getting into oakland. that's because of earlier issues. we also have traffic on 680. the same thing goes. earlier issues have messed the commute up from concord to walnut creek and into danville. let's talk about the bay bridge, which we always look at here. you can see it is backed up for a 20-minute delay before you make it on to the span. 8:17. let's bring in after a fire spread from a neighboring home to theirs. it started at a house under construction on fulton street and alamo square. it was contained half an hour later. no one was hurt. firefighters are inspecting the building under construction to see what started the fire. president trump may soon release a controversial memo that has become a political lightning rod in washington. >> even a response from the fbi. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. early this morning, president trump tweeted the top leadership and investigators of the fbi and the justice department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of democrats and against republicans. something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago. rank and file are great people. los angeles police investigators say yesterday's shooting at a middle school where five people were wounded was an accident. a 12-year-old girl was arrested in the shooting and she was booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm on school grounds. the gun was inside of the girl's backpack and it went off when she dropped that bag. a 15-year-old boy was shot in the head and critically wounded. a 15-year-old girl was shot in the wrist. a staff and two other students were hurt in the cop motion. no word how she got the gun. if it came from an adult in the home, charges could be filed in the case against the adult. as we have been reporting, this is one of the more severe and deadly flu seasons in the year. now a nationwide shortage of tamiflu is making things worse. >> reporter: the deadly flu outbreak hitting the country hard with multiple deaths reported in several states throughout the u.s. now there is another problem emerging, a shortage of temperature flew that can shorten the time that the virus stays in your body. health officials are pleading with the public not to hoard the drug and make sure it gets to the people who need it most. >> they did prescribe the shots are also in short supply. there is no shortage of the vaccine but many pharmacists across the country say a different story. demand outpaced what manufacturers estimated the need would be, especially so late in the season. >> we ran out and we're not getting any more because the flu season is almost over. >> reporter: health officials have ordered schools closed in 14 states with sick kids advise today stay home for at least a week. teachers and staff members now taking extra precautions in most states hoping to keep the schools open. teachers have been given clorox wipes to wipe down door handles. the cdc now recommending that doctors only prescribe tamiflu to children and the elderly as long as the shortage lasts. happening now in the north bay, it is the first friday in a triple ipa to kick off your friday morning, alex. >> reporter: nothing wrong with a breakfast beer. i'm sure you would agree, mike. this is a pilgrimage for beer lovers. they do this every year and they come to santa rosa from all over the world. we have hundreds of people in the line right now. this line goes down to the end of the block and wraps around the block. i would say you have two to 300 people who are eagerly anticipating the release of pliny the younger. this is an especially hoppy triple ipa that the russian river brewing company only puts out once a year. when they do, boy oh boy they draw a big crowd here. many of these folks have been camped out since yesterday afternoon. they have the card game going. are you ready for this beer? >> yes. we've been waiting all year. >> reporter: you've waited an entire year. >> yes. >> reporter: just for this beer. you know there are other beers. >> i know. but nothing compares to pliny the younger. >> reporter: there you got it. pliny the younger is a boost to the economy. people come from the bay area, all across california and the country. a boost for the economy. it is much needed at this time when, you know, we're just a few months out from the devastating fires up in this area. with that being said, the first person in line who got here yesterday is this gentleman, lindsey wadel. you were first in line and you shared with me this morning that you lost your home. one of the thousands of people who lost their homes here. >> one of the fire survivors. >> reporter: you certainly. you're working on rebuilding. >> yes. >> reporter: in the midst of that you wanted to take a break and enjoy a nice beer. >> you know, one of of the things that is in common with the different fire survivors, we are living our lives pretty normal. this fire happened but we're a very strong community here. a lot of it is just about each day taking some time to make it all good and you can't miss pliny the younger. i haven't missed it for a while. this is a special treat. i mean, these guys, vinny and natalie from the brewery have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the different fire survivors and for other great causes like breast cancer. they're really great. >> reporter: it is important to get tourists coming back here to sonoma county. for the wine but also for the beer. >> yeah. the guy that was next to me in for more in today's business news. >> one of the reason that's wall street started off doing well this year. down today. but estee lauder and merck beat the street this morning. the opening bell was met with a jobs report better than expected. but counter acting some of that, higher interest rates coming in. there's some concern there. and take a look at the dow this morning. down 334 points now. 25,848. down more than one and a quarter percent. it is about the same percentage- wise for the dow. the nasdaq and s&p 500 both slipping a full percentage point this morning. a lot of the uncertainty in washington, d.c. playing a little bit of a part here on wall street as well. the labor department says u.s. businesses added 200,000 jobs last month, keeping the unemployment rate at 4.1%. in addition to maintaining that low rate, wages rose though at the fastest pace in more than eight years, which is also good news. the pay gains indicate employers are likely having to compete for smaller pool of workers. raises and bonuses from the minimum wage increases in 18 states as well and the republican tax cuts likely boosting the numbers last month. this is the ninth straight year that the u.s. economy has expanded. some people could see a bigger paycheck today because of the new tax code. the irs released new guidelines on how much employers should withhold for federal taxes from paychecks starting january 11th. the second half of january was the first time that many businesses used the guidelines. the irs says the new withholding changes means more take-home pay for 90% of american workers. how much depends on factors including income, withholding allowances and how often you get paid. if you don't notice a bump in pay right away, don't worry. employers have until february 15th to make the changes. americans are expecting to spend more than $15 billion on the super bowl this year. that's up 8 and a half percent from last year. on average, a fan will spend $81 on food and drinks for the party. the younger you are, the more you spend. people between 25 and 34 years old will spend on average $118. and another stock -- a couple of stocks to watch today. ebay is dumping paypal as its payment system for a newer payment system. >> i've never heard of that. i think paypal we do half of our transactions by paypal. >> it is on more and more. very interesting. i he had a dislocated solder and a head injury when he was hit by the car on sunday. he was a wide receiver in the national football league and became a police officer after injuries ended his football career. vargas was charged with attempted murder and assault. his girlfriend was also charged. a carjacking suspect under arrest after three women fought him off. he was caught on a surveillance camera punching the women in a nail salon in the sherman oaks neighborhood of los angeles. this was posted by lapd. after the carjacking wednesday, the man went into the salon and started hitting the women for no reason. the women fought back in an intense fight for their life. they beat him with portable folding tables. workers from a nearby business came in and held the suspect until police arrived. people in the willow glenn neighborhood are on edge after video surfaced showing a suspicious man casing homes. the video was posted on social media. it shows a man taking pictures of the security system. now many residents are taking measures to increase their own security. tall fences with security deterrents on top serve as a warning to prowlers. we reached out to san jose police about the incident but they declined to comment. a protester arrested when uc berkeley clashed with demonstrators yesterday was released from jail last night. >> hopefully this ordeal will get over and get done and we will win our contract. bye. good night. >> david cole said little as he left the jail in berkeley. during the protesters, he was pulled to the ground and arrested. police claim just before he was taken into custody, he threw a sign at an occupied vehicle damaging it. when they tried to arrest him, he became uncooperative. there were protests at uc campuses across the street by unions representing the medical workers. the union has been bargaining the school for a new contract. uc davis researchers hope to sign up thousands of wildfire survivors about a survey about what they experienced. it is designed to gather the personal experiences, household circumstances and health effects from the wildfires. the questionnaire is part of a larger study of health and environmental hazard that's existed during and after the fires. uc davis scientists hope to look at the short and long-term effects of exposure to flames and smoke as well as impacts of stress by the
