meticulously plan and they believe the gunman started stockpiling weapons last year. and we have new video showing the chaos of that night.>> reporter: the crowd is clearly confused in this cell phone video. the sound of gunfire and officers ordering people to run. >> run, those are gunshots!>> reporter: president donald trump was visiting on wednesday. >> in the depths of horror we will always find hope with the men and women that help.>> reporter: this hours after stephen paddock would commit mass murder.>> we know he is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo and leading a secret life.>> reporter: he reportedly requested an upper floor hotel suite with a view of the concert. he injured a hotel security guard as well. the sheriff said his vehicle had 50 pounds of an explosive and 1600 rounds of ammunition inside. before the shooting he was seen gambling. and one week earlier he rented another hotel room overlooking another music venue. he had stocks of ammunition and explosive at his two homes. and in the last year he purchased 33 firearms, mostly rifles.>> it's hard to determine anything that would determine his trigger point. we don't understand it yet.>> reporter: marilou danley was interviewed by the fbi. >> i knew stephen paddock as a kind, caring, quiet man.>> reporter: she told fbi that he found the ticket to send her to the philippines to see her family. she said she thought he was breaking up.>> it never occurred to me that he was planning violence against anyone was part of the statement released with her attorney. meanwhile, investigators are searching the concert venue for clues. there are purses, wallets, and backpacks that were left behind. concert workers cannot get many of the things they need now. >> all of their belongings, ids and credit cards are at the venue. our work licenses are required to do our jobs and we can't get to those items. we have a lot of people unable to work as a result.>> many of the workers say their cars are also in the area blocked off by crime tape. police are helping those who know where their cars are and helping those first. san francisco police are stepping up their security for the events this weekend. >> we have no known threats to our city. but we want people to feel safe.>> last night the police chief confirmed that there are increased police patrols for this weekend when more than one people are coming in this weekend for fleet week. many are here to see the blue angels. and there is a blue glass -- bluegrass festival as well. now there is new legislation to ban bumps stock. senator feinstein said her own daughter almost went to that music festival in las vegas.>> my daughter was going to go. for one reason or another both families decided to stay at the hotel. that's how close it came to me.>> authorities say the gunman converted 12 semi automatic guns into automatic weapons. now that this couple is back at home they are haunted by the memories.>> i remember waiting to die. the shots were ongoing.>> i kept saying we should be dead. how are we alive?>> kim said the worst moment came when she was hiding underneath a bleacher. bullets were raining down around her. she had to give her daughter a call. >> i told her i didn't know if i could get. -- if i could get out. she and her husband performed cpr on a woman who was shot and could not get out. they performed cpr on her continually until she passed away. the corner -- 59 people have died. three women from the bay area died in the shooting. at least 25 who died were from southern california. the tragic events in las vegas are hard to talk about, especially for children. teachers and children are having class discussions about the tragedy. the students are aware about what happened and many have opinions. one child said his parents were there sunday night.>> i felt helpless. it could happen anywhere. any of us could have been there.>> i can't understand why they did that. >> the teacher holds investigation. committee members say so far their findings back up the assessment that russia carried out a campaign to influence american voters. the senate has expanded the investigation into new areas including russia using facebook twitter and other social media. and they say this interference has not stopped. >> we have more work to do. but we are developing a clear picture of what happened. i will confirm that the russian intelligence services determined, clever, and i recommend that every campaign and election official take this seriously as we head into the elections in november as we prepare for the 2018 elections as well. >> this is a separate investigation from the one ordered by robert mueller.>> one hour ago president donald trump tweeted "why isn't the senate intel committee looking into the fake news network in our country to see why so much of our news is just made up?" secretary of state rex tillerson says he has no plans on leaving his cabinet post.>> i have learned that some try to advance their own agenda by tearing others apart in an effort to undermine the agenda of president donald trump. i do not and will not operate that way.>> secretary tillotson refused to address the media report that he called president donald trump a "moran". afterwards president donald trump said he had confidence in tillers and. treasury and budget officials say the debt in puerto rico is tied up in a bankruptcy process and tied up in bonds. president donald trump said that the debt from the island would need to be wiped out to help it recover. but the 101 southbound if you are driving down the peninsula. it is relatively early for this commute. avoid highway 101 and used to 80. there were -- 280. there was an accident on 101 towards the woodside road exit so traffic is being taken off the freeway at whipple road. the northbound lanes are open and traffic is getting by. southbound 101 is closed. here is the northbound 101 from gilroy to san jose, traffic is moving well into the silicon valley. this is a live look at 280 two downtown and that doesn't look bad. there was an early problem at the toll plaza, a non-injury crash, slowing down saturday. if you are heading to the coast tomorrow and the weekend, we do expect a dangerous surf. hazardous conditions potentially on the coast beginning tomorrow and all weekend long. patchy fog coroner is investigating the death of tom petty. an autopsy was conducted but they need further examination to know exactly how he died. toxicology results may take weeks. tom petty died on monday talking about a warming trend. we have a warm air layer compressing the marine layer. away from the shoreline in the east bay neighborhoods, a bit of a warming trend. upper 60s all the way to the 80s. not much happening out to the west. there is fog down toward monterey. solid overcast right now towards the golden gate bridge and vero beach as well. upper 40s to the 50s in santa rosa, 42. half moon bay in the mid-40s. coastal fog this morning. there could be patchy fog this afternoon along the coastline. 70s today, all the way to the low to mid-80s today. sal has the traffic report.>> 101 southbound approaching whipple avenue is closed. the accident happened at woodside, a single car accident. the road is still closed . it is unclear if there is more police activity. we do know about the closure. northbound lanes are open. traffic is moving through. we are keeping an eye on that. this is the south bay commute driving on northbound 101, slow traffic approaching the 880 interchange. westbound 24 traffic is looking good. 680 is doing better today. we have the metering lights on at the bay bridge. it is 5:32.>> police in danville want your help to try to track down this armed robbery suspect. this is from september 20 and a man walks into a walgreens, pulls out a gun and demanded a prescription medication. the clerk gave him the drugs. the suspect took off. take a look at and if you have any information call danville police. police say the shootings on tuesday are in fact connected. a 27-year-old man was found shot in bentley. investigators' say he was involved in a gun battle with another man minutes earlier. both men are expected to survive. in a separate case police say a 61-year-old man was shot and killed in a dispute regarding another man's wife.>> one of the suspects was trying to pimp the other man's wife. so he caught up with the other guy and killed him. >> police have obtained surveillance video and they say they have strong leads and expect to make an arrest soon. and a student carrying a nerf gun caused a lockdown yesterday. campus police say someone had what looked like a gun. police detained the person and it was a nerf gun being used as a prop for an event unrelated to the school. the leader of a church has been arrested, along with 17 members of the sugar leaf church on charges of conspiracy and drug charges. they seized 1500 marijuana plants, $2100 in cash and eight guns. this after reports of an armed man on the grounds of the church. when deputies arrived, there was a shootout. the man was killed and two deputies were injured. ricardo perez is ordered to stand trial for charges of having sex with a coworker when she was 17. a motion by the defense was granted to throw out the case because of insufficient evidence. and police are looking for young candidates.>> after school i would come to this boys and girls club. this is where i grew up. >> reporter: now he is an officer and he hopes those relationships will deadline day for young immigrants. it is their last chance to apply for an extension of d.a.c.a. the trump administration said they will be canceling that program and phasing it out in march. many may lose their legal status under d.a.c.a. before march. today is the deadline to apply for and extension. flooding concerns is causing the clear out of heavy vegetation around coyote creek. crews are looking to remove 40 different kinds of vegetation in 16 acres. this is overgrown vegetation from the rainy season. this after the flood that caused hundreds of people to be displaced.>> the floods vaccines to the homeless. the homeless are most at risk for infection which spreads by poor hygiene. a free vaccination clinic is set for next wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.. street parking canadian snowbirds, the only flying team from canada. and there is a service people are using for their daily commute.>> reporter: this is the smart train and since it began operations on august 26, more than 86,000 riders have used it, justifying an order for more cars. >> i think a lot of people have been waiting for this to happen.>> it is really pleasant. we enjoyed the ride down. i did not have to fight the traffic. >> i just wish they had more parking spaces to park for the train. >> smart train has created -- carried as many as 800 bicycles a day. officials say they are considering just as quickly. the mayor of san francisco says they will be working on modular housing for the homeless. this is a 250 unit building at 7th and mission. the mayor says the deal will speed up the process and help get people off the streets. >> we need faster and less expensive housing. particularly when we are trying to house the homeless.>> he says the union agreed in this case to help provide homes for the lowest income people in need. time now is 5:47. let's look at traffic with sal.>> on the southbound 101, there is a closure towards the redwood city area. traffic is being taken off the freeway at whipple. it looks like they may have just reopened -- in fact, they did just reopened southbound 101 less than five minutes ago. so traffic will be moving. all lanes are open again in redwood city. there is some residual backup at that should go away soon. again all lanes reopened on southbound 101. westbound 580, traffic moving slowly. likewise for 205. this is the dublin commute and it is already slow approaching 238. at the bay bridge, we are backed up. now let's go to meteorologist mark tamayo .>> thank you. here is the forecast for today. we have areas of fog near the shoreline impacting visibility, keeping temperatures in the 60s around the bay. inland, back up to the 80s. not much happening across the west coast. we do still have this fog up and down the coastline, hugging the shoreline down towards the golden gate and monterey as well. fog up towards muir beach as well. these are the current numbers right now. a few cool spots, san jose reporting mostly clear skies and 53 degrees. this is a snapshot of the highs today. a touch warmer than yesterday. this area of low pressure bringing cooler temperatures monday and tuesday. but today we begin to warm up. that warming continues into friday and saturday. saturday will be the warmest day of the weekend. we could get strong gusting winds on sunday into monday and that could bring a higher fire danger. heads up if you are heading to the coast tomorrow, we do expect waves approaching 5 to 9 feet with a high swell probability. for today, we expect inland neighborhoods around the low to new regulation in california. the commission that regulates the companies instead wants proof of annual background checks, which both companies already do. both uber and lyft are opposed to fingerprint requirements. they keep current requirements banning drivers that are sex offenders or who have been convicted of violent crimes or duis. experts say drivers are taking their eyes off the road when driving new cars because of radios and text messaging and technology. according to a triple late study, drivers are more distracted now than ever. the new features can be complicated to use.
