Its all happening today and students at uc berkeley are demanding a ceasefire in gaza and for the university to and connections with companies that are linked to israel. Kron 4 s Charles Clifford joins us now live from uc berkeley with the latest here. Thanks for joining us. Well, good protest or nothing unusual here in the cal campus. But today a group people upset with the conflict in israel and gaza has created a sit in in the main plaza. For cal berkeleys sproul hall tuesday morning, protesters had set up dozens of tents along with banners and signs of support for the people of gaza and palestine. They are demanding that the School Called for a ceasefire in the conflict between israel and hamas over the past several months, protesters have caused disruptions on campus. In march. The university had to evacuate attendees at an event organized by jewish student groups. When proPalestinian Protesters gathered outside. Its ball pause on tuesday. Some students walking to class expressed support for the protesters. I think that the students using their power and their privilege to uplift other people, especially those suffering from a genocide is extremely important. This is created an environment on campus. Thats very. Im comfortable. But some jewish students say that they have been harassed for months, feel that the university has let them down. Uc berkeley doesnt care about your students prioritize your safety and it isnt care of, you know, we are forced to learn in an environment that is not conducive to one in which we feel welcomed. Or let alone say fun. The University Says that with just 3 weeks left in the school year, they want to protect the right to free speech, but also make sure that the school run smoothly and safely. Well be ready to take any steps necessary to ensure that the universitys operations arent disrupted by this protest. And those operations obviously include teaching learning and research. So far its unclear how long these protesters plan to remain on campus. Alright, back live the protesters are also calling on the university to create a financial boycott of israel. And the Jewish Community Relations Council released a statement in response to the demonstration. It reads here. And another Northern California campus has been closed because of those similar demonstrations there. California state Polytechnic University in humboldt making the announcement on its website. More than 130 demonstrators arrested yesterday after refusing to leave an encampment that they set up at nyu. About 60 people were arrested at a similar protest on yales campus. More than 30 tents were set up at the university of michigan. 9 people arrested after setting up an encampment at the university of minnesota. It was last week that more than 100 columbia students were arrested for occupying a space on campus for more than 30 hours. The school says the decision was made following reports of, quote, intimidating chance and several antisemitic incidents.
