San francisco residents will get a say in expanding a program aims to helping people on the streets go back home today. The San Francisco rules committee discussed reviving the Homeward Bound Program. The committee will take Public Comment at its next meeting on monday ahead of the supervisors vote on tuesday. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson talked with orga izations devoted to helping the unhoused to learn if they think this program is helpful. She joins us in studio now with details. Sarah. Yeah, people who served the unhoused daily say the Homeward Bound Program is not for everyone, but its a resource they will recommend to people who need or want to go home. A San Francisco program has been offering unhoused people a ticket back to their home towns for nearly 20 years. It allows us the opportunity to offer the ability to reunify with their family. A ticket expenses to get back to their home. And we ensure and a 30 day 60 and a 90 that theyre still there. Theyre still supported the Homeward Bound Program started under thenmayor Gavin Newsoms office with the goal to help 1000 people annually supervisor ahsha suffice. As in recent years, the program has dwindled. Hes now working to revive it while also running against mayor london breed for her job this november under mayor breed. It was buried in the bureaucracy. And it dropped to just a couple 100 people a year. Homeward bound has become a resource for organizations like glide Memorial Church in foundation. The chief Public Affairs officer is glad to see the city reinvesting in it. It is one tool in tool box. And i think we want to be looking at all of that. It is not for everyone and they dont have the resources to go home, but they want to go home. Absolutely. This is a great program. I can reach for family. After years of living on the streets, this man got reconnected with his family with the help of the San Francisco nonprofit miracle messages founder kevin adler says its important this program is only offered to people who are actually from another city, which is not the majority of those living on the streets. According to a study by ucsf. 90 of the unsheltered population in california are from this state. 75 became homeless in the same county. They last had housing programs like homeward as long as theyre not doing greyhound therapy. But theyre actually. You know, you stop the we doing some Due Diligence on where the person is going stay, making sure that theres a plan to them to get there and that were not just trying to ship people out. You know, who really within an area. Mayor london breed announced new goal of helping 1000 people a year with homeward bound during her state of the city address. Her office sent us a statement that reads in part the proposed legislation before the board of supervisors does nothing that will expand the use of the program in any way or help more people get connected to their homes. New at 10 tonight, investigators have identified the mother and child found dead last week in santa rosa as 54 yearold cynthia, in brays and 10 yearold Maximus Monroy both were found dead last wednesday in their home on summerfield road. But at this time, they say they believe the mother stabbed herself. The childs cause of death is still being investigated. They say the boy did not have any visible injuries. More than a dozen federal agents reportedly conducted this operation earlier today. Here. At the Federal Correctional Institution in dublin, walking out with computers with documents. The search comes amid a years long federal abuse investigation of the facility. An Ap Investigation in 2021. Found a culture of abuse and coverups that went on for years since then, at least 8 prison employees have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. 5 of them have pleaded guilty. 2 were convicted at trial and last august, 8 inmates sued the bureau of prisons alleging the agency had failed to keep its promise to root out abuse and protect the safety of people in custody. We spoke with a volunteer advocate with the California Coalition for women prisoners. The group is part of a Class Action Lawsuit against federal Correctional Institute and the federal bureau of prisons. Emily shapiro says last week 12 more survivors joined the lawsuit. Shapiro is not clear what led to this mornings raid but thinks its probably connected to the Class Action Lawsuit. In then, over 2 years that ive been visiting people at dublin. Hundreds of students, faculty and alumni gathered on campus today saying the School Leaders are not doing enough to protect jewish students from antisemitic violence. Organizers say propalestinian and antiisrael protesters have blocked, say their gate for weeks and they say campus policy indicates that shouldnt be allowed. When theres a student or Student Organization that is violating policies such as protesting and blocking, say their gate to enforce the policy when the University Administration doesnt enforce policy. That results in a hostile unsafe island campus ridges. 2 weeks ago, a pro palestine demonstration did take place on campus against an event organized by jewish students at bellaire, buck playhouse, it forced police to evacuate attendees and and israeli speaker Uc Berkeley Police department announced last week it was investigating those incidents as hate crimes. In a statement uc berkeleys vice chancellor said in part, while we support uc berkeley is under investigation by the u. S. Department of education for possible discrimination tied to the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. The investigation comes following allegations the university violated title 6 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race color and National Origin and programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Its unclear what event or events may have triggered this investigation. We have reached out to uc berkeley for comment on that but have not yet heard back. The death of a 63 yearold asian woman in San Franciscos Bayview District last year is getting another look police have reopened the investigation after initially ruling in an accident. Yanfeng wound died after falling on the sidewalk and hitting her head. Witnesses have said wu is standing at the intersection of 3rd and egbert when someone pushed her from behind a year after closing that case, police say new evidence may have emerged last week. They say they arrested and charged a person who reportedly assaulted 71 yearold asian woman just 5 blocks from where you fell. Police did not confirm if that person interviewed in the attack is the same person they arrested last week. But Charles Zhang with the Asian Justice Movement is demanding Police Release video of that first attack. There was a conclusion reached that that death was an accident. And so now here we are the next and the same person apparently attacked another elderly asian woman. And so i think its high time for the public to be able to judge for themselves. I think one way that we could do that is by viewing the video of that first attack. Police have refused to release the video saying it will jeopardize the investigation. Now the snow level, this a colder storm dropping down to about 4500 feet. You can see maybe 3, maybe 6 inches of snow above 5,000 feet across some of the higher peaks. Well be talking about the 8, maybe 10 inches of snow. How about that . So you can expect some travel delays up there, of course, tonight and possibly tomorrow chain controls at times. Definitely overnight tonight and some gusty winds, especially lake level, are seeing some gusty winds and get over some of the mountain passes there. Youln likely see some pretty gust as well. So Winter Weather advisories have been posted across much of the western slopes of the sierra nevada. You can see all shaded in purple here, brown there. This wind advisories across the great lake tahoe area, too. But yeah, you can see another nice round of some snow heading the high country. But heres the good news. Things are going to stop as far as snows concern and then the clouds are going to go away for the most part. And were going bring lots of sunshine and dry conditions, the high country. So if you want to ski on that fresh powder wednesday, thursday, friday, even into the weekend is looking good. Thank lawrence. As gun violence continues to plague the country and California Attorney general rob bonta says the state is taking action to ensure guns are kept away from people who are prohibited from owning them. Our capitol correspondent Eytan Wallace has the story. Well, just take a look at all of these guns. These represent just a handful of the more than 1000 firearms. The California Department of justice seized last year. From people prohibited from as low as possible. That attorney general rob bonta says is specifically the goal of californias armed prohibited persons system program. Also known as apps. It takes date of all the legal gun purchases and 3 plus million legal gun owners in the state and cross references it with a list of the more than 23,000 californians who are prohibited from owning a gun most of the time either because they were convicted of a violent felony or misdemeanor were placed under a Domestic Violence or other restraining order or are experiencing severe mental illness. If theyre found with a gun or deemed to about one before ending up on the list, the state will come and take it away because of this program. Organs. Are off our streets and out of dangerous hands. More schools, places of worship, dance studios, workplaces and neighborhoods. They are all safer. He notes the program is especially crucial in the state where more than 3,000 people die of gun violence every year bonta has long maintained the program does not target legal gun owners, something republicans in the legislature agree with.
