Scene seeing the amount of smoke just. Looming through the air here. Of course, we were able to get pretty close to the scene here, but it is private property. So weve been getting booted quite a few by security, but we try to get the best visual that what were looking at nets, what was that were looking at is a large pile of scrap metal that was on fire. Im sort of the smell that you could get from just being in. This immediate area, though, was mostly sort of like a plastic e sort of smell. That was what was able to be we know that air district inspectors are going to be looking into just how bad the air quality is here in this area. Of cours , people are being advised to close their windows and try to avoid being consuming any of this zeroed in on some specific communities, including alameda southern parts of oakland, san leandro, hayward and also possibly fremont has the evening here progresses. We caught up with a couple of people that were out here because it definitely drew people to come see exactly what it is that was on fire. 2 people. We met up with. Were from alameda saying that they were dealing with essentially the smell of death, so to speak, because it was just so bad. They came up here and they describe exactly what they were looking to us. Take a listen. Just with his 2 fick, i mean, just think. Fiery smoke. I mean, smoke is thick. You could cut it with machete. You know, is thick smoke . And is all consuming. But that funding away because you are safer it is. It seems is that like a big month, they know donald fired and we can this cub a dose those are their move but terrible. You know. Right now, we do know from fire crews exactly what caused this they are reporting that there are no injuries. Of course, theyre expecting to be on scene here for the next several hours, really trying to put out those hot spots. We actually just heard from the p i o a short while ago that hes going to collecting the oakland fire chief and theyre going to be im hosting a essentially a press conference exactly what went on here, their response and what more we can expect. Again, just having to deal with the smoke seems to be the biggest part of the story that thats lingering on here. Now, as it appears as though crews are starting to you make some Real Progress on on putting out this fire thats been burning since around 5. 30, this afternoon or this evening, rather grant vicki. All right, dan live for us tonight in the east bay. Thank you, dan. Thank meanwhile, deadly fought fires burning on to Hawaiian Islands tonight. At least 6 people have died. Dozens of others are hurt. More than 270 buildings are confirmed to be destroyed. Look at that. The wildfires are burning all over the state tonight from maui to the big island. You have fires forcing many people to evacuate. Some residents even jumping into the ocean to escape the flames. Things were chaotic. Cell phone service was out. People were sleeping. It snuck up on them. This is la hina. Western portion of maui. The corner of your screen here is the Citys Library burning. You can also see smoke billowing into the air and completely covering the sky tonight. There with. So i get a live look right now at sfo tonight. Thats where flights from hawaii been a. Coming in tonight. There were about to 4,000 tourists on maui when this fire began. All of them now trying you to evacuate and get home for Sarah Stinson is at sfo catching up with those passengers that just arrived from the island. Sarah. Vikki. Thats right. A Hawaiian Airlines plane just landed here at sfo and this plane came directly from maui. Were starting to see some bags come into International Terminal baggage claim. This is what going to see. Some of the passengers island. Im theyre exhausted. Im sure theyre grateful to be home. These are most likely people who are, you know, on vacation. And this turned into a nightmare. And then now theyre finally home. At least they have a home to go to. Is what matters. But all day weve been talking to people who have been flying in honolulu. And people know heino well, its been on the top of everyones mind. This devastating wildfire. Take a listen. You have any friends still over there that it . Yes. You know, we have very close friend and the people the lives of being taken on the families have been affected by this, that we were planning to go to mali, but lastminute honolulu. Instead. So the people who are flying in right now, were waiting for them to arrive. Their bags will be waiting for them. Theyre coming from kahului airport. Making matters all that much worse. Chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is with us tonight with a look at the conditions there. Like most horrific wildfires just like here. The wind is a real culprit. Yeah. And you know that hurricane over 800 miles away even further now. But thats amazing how you get to pressure pattern set up one big High Pressure, kind of like a mountain there and a very deep area of low pressure and all that air just rolls downhill a little lower. Thought they dodged a bullet. Was dora. Yeah, i know really. And thats the thing. But theres an active fire. But as you well know, you get an active fire. You get winds like that gusting to 80 miles an hour. I mean, theres really nothing you can do to stop it. So its going to burn. Fires have the winds have decreased somewhat concede or out there still well away from wind. That is a major hurricane, a category 4, but still the proximity with High Pressure to the north, the 2 kind of acting the funnel that weather. So thats what we call a Pressure Gradient. The winds kind of set themselves up. Got High Pressure here. Youve got low pressure, the south, that low rotating and a counter clockwise rotation around that area of low pressure just the opposite way around that ridge. But all that funneling right in toward the Hawaiian Islands and setting itself up for a major wind event. So then you get an active fire on top of that. And thats a major problem right now. Heres a look at the latest winds there you can see is to still see gust over 20 miles an hour in maui. The good news is that hurricane is moving away from hawaii. That Pressure Gradient should begin to loosen up and the wind should begin to calm down overnight tonight. Thank you, lawrence. Our Team Coverage of these fires continues tonight.
