Our current for dan thorn joins us now live from the newsroom with the latest on vicki, while the cleanup process is taking a lot longer than officials at hope for the original 24 hour prediction for the evacuation has passed and though they are hoping to get everyone home tonight, it may not be lifted until sometime tomorrow. Thats because of the sheer amount of work that has to be done. This massive response started yesterday with a call for a gas leak. But firefighters say that quickly changed when they got to the scene and found a stockpile of Hazardous Materials processed over. 600 different chemicals and 800 bottles or vials or containers. They had to go through and identify. Most of those items are most of the material first. So that was a big challenge. Thats why it took so long for them get up and going to start processing. Well, the Fire Department says the chemicals were stored illegally in a shed by a man who passed away about 6 months ago. Has will continue working the site. But estimates estimates as much as 20 of the materials could still be on the site by the end of tonight. Another update is expected sometime this evening. The evacuation zone reserve reduced by about a block today allowing some people to return to their homes. The Contra Costa CountyFire Protection district says it understands the inconvenience and well have all residents back as soon as it is safe in total, about 120 homes had to be evacuated. Firefighters say the chemicals were fairly stable and that the owner, quote, seem to know what they were doing when storing those chemicals. And that is likely what allowed the chemicals to stay stable all this time. But they did stress what a truly dangerous situation this is because of if one of those chemicals exploded, it could have set off a Chain Reaction blowing all of them up in the newsroom.
