Of rolling blackouts to ease demand on the states electrical grid. Its all happening amid days of long heat wave that is also fueling a number of wildfires more than a dozen active wildfires are currently burning across the golden state, including several in here right here in the bay area that have prompted evacuation warnings. Tonight we have Live Team Coverage of the ongoing heat wave in the impacts from it Ashley Zavala is live in sacramento with the governor with what the governor is now demanding in light of those blackouts kron fours dan kerman though joins us live from the east bay on the deers own fires but first kron 4 meteorologist Mabrisa Rodriguez is tracking the dangerous conditions now fueling these blazes or so. Hi there. Jonathan yeah lets take a look at stormtracker 4 plenty of thunderstorms rolling through parts of ukiah in clear lake right now we do have a red flag warning so high fire danger in effect right now for lake and mendocino counties but for us here in the bay area tracking this cell that is inching its way eastward towards santa rosa out there right now right now dry for those of you in santa rosa and more of the bay area for the most part. So we are noticing those lingering thunderstorms just to our north bringing imminent fire danger there, but we do have very hot and dry conditions for us here closer to home in the bay area where heat advisory in effect until 9 oclock this evening for downtown San Francisco, an excessive heat warning for nearly everyone else away from the immediate coastline that is going to remain in effect through wednesday at 9 oclock so lets take a look at just how dry it is out there, especially for inland valleys, triple digit heat once again very hot dry conditions with relative humidity in the 20th to 30th percentile and because of nearby fires all of those spot fires of the dry lightning is caused in the last couple of days we are noticing an air quality advisory bringing moderate amounts of poor air particles through tuesday, so limit outdoor activity, especially for those of you with any pulmonary or respiratory issues tracking this heat wave because its going to continue through midweek more in my full forecast in just a few minutes jonathon back to risa thank so much tonight more than 3 million californians are at risk of being left in the dark. After cal iso says another night of rolling blackouts are likely that could take place at any moment now a power alert is in effect for the next few days, cal iso is calling for statewide conservation starting at 3 oclock this afternoon all the way up until 10 oclock tonight. Cal iso also says that it will likely order Utility Companies to turn off the power tonight. They expect the state. It is a short about 4400 megawatts and those impacted could lose power for about 2 hours. Right now we dont know exactly where the outages may occur. Here is a look at the current outages across the bay area from pg and es website. This afternoon more than 47,000 customers were in the dark many of those outages locally or in the silicon valley, san jose has the most outages right now in the bay area with more than 7,000. This is also a look at cal iso is current demand just within the last hour you can see the capacity as around 50,000 megawatts and todays peak demand was around 45,000 megawatts the outages and shut off snow has governor Gavin Newsome demanding answers. Hes calling for an investigation into the Energy Shortages that have impacted millions across the state. Kron 4 Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala lot tonight in sacramento with the very latest ashley. And jonathan well cal iso the electrical grid operator ordered those latest rounds of blackouts for the first time in almost 20 years. The governor though hes taking responsibility pointed to that agency and other state regulators saying they failed to predict in planned this event. Im not pleased with whats frustrated. Governor Gavin Newsome monday calling for an investigation into the States Energy regulators for their failure to properly. Brace for the Current Energy shortage and subsequent power. Disruptions we will lay out in detail, the terms. What were going to do to make sure this simply doesnt happen again. The governor sent a letter to the California Energy commission, the Public Utilities commission and the California Independent system operator with concerns the shortages and shut offs over the weekend happened without prior warning and enough time to prepare leaders of cal iso say they constantly warned the Public Utilities commission that this could happen saying the situation could have been avoided we see now the grid operators. And we tell me the regulatory authorities how the grid operates. People to do a lot of Different Things i guess what i have to do a better job of making our voices heard through all of that news to monday also signed a proclamation allowing utilities and other energy users to use backup sources amid a record heat wave scorching the state but state regulators say rolling blackouts over the next 3 days are certain as the heat overwhelms californias electrical grid with an estimated shortage of 4400 megawatts by monday night Energy Regulators say about 3. 3 million customers could be hit with Power Outages that could be one of if not the largest rolling blackout in california history, its going to be highly disruptive to people a night. Now jonathan as you mentioned state leaders are urging californians to conserve energy in any way that they can at least until 10 oclock tonight that includes setting your ac to about 78 degrees and holding off on using those major appliances, reporting live in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news ashley, thanks so much. We do want to check in with pg and e tonight as thousands of folks across the bay area are in the dark still after days. Of those outages and with the potential of even more. Joining us right now pg e spokesman jeff smith to talk a little bit more about what theyre seeing right now jeff, we know that you guys have been ordered that these rolling blackouts could start at any moment. Whats the very latest on that. No youre right it were just waiting for official word from the california ious so as to whether or not theyre going to roll out rolling blackouts this evening we do on to state that there will be. Weve been in regular communication with them and so really the question at this point is if they do call for rolling blackouts and exactly how many megawatts theyre going to ask for us to to to take off the grid and that will depend on how many customers are ultimately impacted. We are seeing extremely hot temperatures across the state we expect to continue to see that through at least midweek and there are the really the words of the day we encourage our customers to conserve as much energy as possible and to prepare for the possibility of rolling blackouts when you guys may get that word from cal iso house quickly do you begin taking customers off the grid. And which customers you target first how do you make that evaluation to figure out exactly where youre going to go first with trying to conserve energy what ways do to what on friday and saturday we received about 10 minutes notice before we have to begin taking customers off the grid and taking customers out of power so. Well we do have advance notice and a sense of we expect that there will very likely be rotating outages this evening exactly how many and where we will not know until we get word from the california. So how many make it wants we need to take off klein and sometimes we dont have you know very short amount of time as much as 10 minutes on as little as 10 minutes. I should say before we can begin doing that in terms of deciding. Which customers are going to be impacted. That also is kind of contentions on how many megawatts they ask us to take off the grid once we know that number they worry is kind of like a mathematical equation we look at the various blocks of customers and see which customers we need to take out in order to meet the threshold that were being directed by the california ious owed to take out of power what we do try and do those of customers have already experienced a rotating outage for example on friday or saturday we try to make sure that those customers do not receive another rotating outages outage today, not until at least most of them not all of the chinese customers have how to rotating outage will be go back to those originally experience. The focus is still in the dark tonight from those rolling blackouts hopefully they can get the lights back on and hopefully. Folks can conserve energy as much as possible to avoid another night as well. Jeff smith with pg anything so much for spending time with us we do much for time.
