KRON KRON 4 News At 8am July 12, 2024

To it from all angles in fact, heres the San Francisco Police Department so looks like they brought out their mobile unit as well the command center at this location so it looks like they obviously will be part. The investigation whether or not this was intentional or not you can clearly see 13th street here and im located at 13th and harrison you can see the signs that they have blocked this off to allow trucks from the Fire Department, the Police Department to arrive at the scene without anybody getting in their way. This is an area that is very busy south of market as you talked about robin, a tropic is only moving from the left to the right from this way so this is as close as people. Are allowed and as we speak right now it looks like its not just my imagination right it looks like the smoke is now turning a little bit wider which is a good sign that they have turned the corner when its thick and his black in its just hard to see through that means that the fire is reaching new material but once it turns away from my years of talking to firefighters that is a great sign that they are at least turning the corner we talked about the freeway there. It is and a good way and a bad way bad ways they its so close to the cause. But in a good way the firefighters are actually using it to their advantage by hopping onto the freeway shutting down the freeway so the firefighters can rain down thousands of gallons down to that the flames and then i saw a couple of ladders fully extended on the ground as well on the street level so it looks like they are turning the corner were not hearing of any injuries any fatalities. Next time you see me ill move closer to the command center just to get an update from the Fire Department. But it looks like from my Vantage Point guys said. Good news and you know months soon as i say that there it is right there there is a pats where its gotten thicker and black are as we speak so they still have their hands full obviously dont come down here because it is a traffic mess back to you all right well, thanks for that live report and they are going to be holding a press conference at about 8. 30 this morning will tran headed that way were going to be sure to cover that. Find out more about the origin of this fire. We want to show you some new video that we have from viewers look at the flames and the smoke from that view robin yeah, it is huge im following the Fire Department on twitter and theyre actually going to check the freeway one on one just to make sure that theres no damage to the freeway because its burning socalled they are on scene continuing to extinguish this fire. They have all the streets blocked off erie fulsome then asked all of the surrounding streets are closed to traffic and theyre asking folks to stay away from the stretch, its a busy area marty i miss of residential and commercial areas, we know theres a sherman. A paint store. Theres a shot williams chain store, yeah, theres a Grocery Store nearby so a huge impact on traffic the central freeway at times is backing up in both directions and you can see from this video how they just have the entire street blocked off so its just a good idea to avoid this stretch all together and im also hearing that this fire has spread to multiple building. So were no longer talking about one structure fire but multiple structure fire we can tell from that video that we just saw multiple love multiple buildings are involved in this as you mentioned theres a Sherman Williams paint store in that area, theres a lot of different restaurants, small shops, Public Works Department is their Rainbow Grocery officemax all in that general area too soon to know exactly what buildings are involved, but you can see from from these video that were seen. It was a huge fire one point and robin you have to hand it to the Fire Department because in a relatively short time. Theyve been knocking this down significantly since we first started reporting this maybe half an hour 40 minutes ago, yeah, when we first saw it, you know we saw the thick black smoke and the flames and now as we look at the video. That continues to come in we noticed the change in color right as its going from thick and black to light gray and white so that means that they are getting a handle on this looking at the feed from the Fire Department on muscle seen that pg e has arrived to the scene marty theyre shutting off power in the area sure to assist a fire crews in the Police Department with dealing with this fire. So some of the local residents no longer have power yes, so if youre watching us on your phone or something along that line another just be aware than you live in that area that your power is likely going to be shut off and if it isnt already. So your your mobile device, your phone the best way to stay informed and up to date and also a great time to download the kron 4 mobile app as well we keep looking at was video clips and its just astonishing to see just how fully involved in flames were earlier this morning. We had another view from the central freeway, a caltrans camera looking at the fire and you can see it just sending smoke that could be seen for miles around the bay area robin you mentioned it could be seen from the bay bridge absolutely be seen from the east bay now down the peninsula as well westbound ad, im looking at the sensors to road sensors the traffic is backing up on westbound 80 because people can see it on the bay bridge. The suspension span coming into San Francisco. Its right next to the central freeway over on the right side theyve been running traffic break so i would say even avoid the central because the smoke is such a visual distraction everybody slowing down to take a look at its backing up traffic there and then the james lick northbound that stocked up in San Francisco as well right one more thing were just hearing from our producer from the San Francisco Sheriffs Office that one of their locations are is being impacted by this fire they had to evacuate. The building because of the smoke and the flames of because its so close so that building from the Sheriffs Office and some of the other surrounding residential areas as well marty have just been evacuated and we do understand that all the Sheriffs Office personnel were evacuated safely in fact one of the one of the slivers of good news that we have in in the situation is that weve had no reports of any injuries thus far this morning course way too soon to know about the cause or the exact location. As we have been mentioning it is a mix of residential and industrial in that area also commercial and so it it could have been anything but looking at those flames that lead you to believe that it was more industrial than it was residential, but obviously well find out more at 8. 30 when we have the press conference with Fire Department yeah thats coming up shortly in just a really quick recap this fire is burning along arie street between 14th and shot well, but crews are asking that you avoid all surrounding streets will stay on top of this download the kron 4 mobile app take it with you. And we knew we can keep you updated as youre on the go all right we need to get an update on tuesdays forecast now we have days far standing by with an update dates robin marty good morning and good morning, everybody im just a check and one of the reporting sites that is somewhat close to that in the Mission District and theres a bit of a local southwest wind. Coming about 15 Miles Per Hour or so the general pattern is one is very typical of an onshore wind. So that should blow the smoke out into the bay, but its still very congested area so it has to get out of there its going to have to cross over still congested area and no telling exactly how much smoke is with this toward the pas and maybe perhaps on the east bay later on today of course, winds will pick up a little bit true to fashion which will be talking about a little bit as well mentioned this earlier about seeing some warming happening inland now, but the fog is starting to lift least in part 67. Antioch you can see but still 50s up in the north bay 61 for san jose. Theres the shot of the bay bridge toll plaza, 80 by high noon at 3 oclock were talking 89. Could have more on your forecast coming up in just a bit marty all right dave thanks lot want to show you some new video that we have in this breaking news story a 5 alarm fire. Near the central freeway in San Francisco, sending well into the sky, a visible from many parts of the bay area this morning when understand no one has been injured just yet. The sheriffs had to evacuate their office in downtown San Francisco, one of many forced evacuations because of the fire well have more coverage of this fire coming up wh good morning, were back on the kron 4 morning news with breaking news of a 5 alarm fire burning south of market in San Francisco close to the central freeway, were looking at new photos into the kron 4 news room showing you just how huge that fire is. Burning sending thick black smoke into the sky that can be seen from pretty much all over the bay area this morning. Luckily, no one has been injured we have no reports of any injuries we do have reports of evacuations going on in the area, including the San Francisco Sheriffs Office. Everyone there was evacuated safely, but it just shows you just how dangerous it is in that area. If youre if youre coming into the city you obviously want to avoid the central freeway highway one oh one southbound also why is streets in and around the south of market area were talking about south van ness 14th fulsome that whole general area you want to try and stay away from as much as possible because its pretty much gridlock and the Fire Department needs those streets to be able to send fire crews to battle this fire. We have been noticing that over the past several minutes, the smoke coming from the fire has been turning to more of a white gray color as opposed to that thick black smoke that you see in this video which tells us that the firefighters are being able to knock down the flames quite a bit and we have to hand it to them for their heroic work as usual. This fire went to 5 alarms and we understand know firefighters have been injured from a from last report kron fours will tran is at the scene will be getting live reports from him throughout the morning. Were also expecting a press conference from the San Francisco Fire Department to tell us more about the fire. Maybe give us an idea of where exactly it started and what buildings are being affected by it. You can see from that video that were talking about multiple buildings being na being consumed by the flames, but we dont know exactly if there are residential or industrial that area is a mix of commercial industrial and residential. Neighborhoods in that general area so it could include any one or all of those different categories, but a civil suit too soon to know. This fire broke out roughly 45 minutes to an hour ago quickly went to 5 alarms and we could see it clearly from the caltrans camera up on highway one o one the central freeway showing the flames just shooting out into the sky and sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and if his it has been a quite a firefight since then so well continue to stay on top of this for you throughout the morning and we want to go now to robin who busy in the Traffic Center telling us more about how this fire is impacting traffic in and around San Francisco, robin yeah, we went from talking about how light and quiet the morning commute was to now how awful it is for people. Heading into and out of San Francisco because of this fire thats burning so close to the central freeway, its just having a huge impact not only on city streets in San Francisco, but along all major freeways as well so its closer to the southbound portion of the central freeway, not too far from the nest and everybody on the freeways slowing down to take a look at the activity so its causing backups for the southbound commute end the northbound commute the entire northbound stretch of the central freeway thats all backed up that slowdown is spilling over to one o one which is right in the middle of your screen you see that heavy traffic thats a northbound james lick it is solid beyond cesar chavez and then for people coming into San Francisco on the bay bridge 80 west. They can see that huge plume of smoke as well so now westbound 80 is full of stop and go traffic from Treasure Island all the way over to the skyway so once again youre just backed up through all directions. We mentioned that the fire was near area between 14th and shotwell so those are the streets that you should avoid as well as the surrounding streaming streets like vanasse and false or teens 14th we also mentioned marty that pg e was on scene yes cut off power, im thinking thats going to impact the traffic light so yeah, exactly yeah and also for people who are in the area and wondering whats going on and then get trying to get the latest information there power may have been shut off so going to your phone or other portable device. Is the best way to go right now we want to go ahead get caught up on the weather forecast. Heres dave spahr heidi. Okay good morning guys, good morning, everyone now one of the things looking of some of the winds that we have this is the live shot of what the winds are the typical on shore and we have always this in bergen that goes on the morning with the fogs we dont get a lot of movement occurring vertically on the atmosphere thats going to change with the sun now joining us a bit. More locally the winds have been out of the southwest in that area Mission District say theres little reporting site there winds at southwest at about 15 or so, but everything is the general pattern of west to east. But its a very congested area so its going to blow smoke still in the congested area until it gets into the bay and moves off east. Oh good ill show you what the forecasts are for the winds in just a bit, heres sfo still dealing with some of the fog we see the sun peering through a little bit to start the process of the mixing 67 for any office doll now starting to race ahead a little bit now most of the east bays into the 60s little cooler San Francisco at 56 50s also up to the north bay too. Now as we go through future cast here look for the winds typically in the city, the winds will pick up again the same westerly pattern and that will get into the teens though, but its really in the inland valleys will start to be channeled a bit as has been the case the last couple of days certainly, but you get the inland heating and that drives those onshore. Winds later act is a little bit of a cooling mechanism. This is a live shot 2 of the bay bridge toll plaza but the morning fog and clouds give way to sunny and warm afternoon. Theres a slight pullback with temperatures the next 2 days beyond then into the weekend temperatures bump back up again. Thats called a heap up if you will for today, 65 San Francisco, 72 for oakland in 84. For san jose, but we still have 90s on the board 94, antioch 91 for concord 80s up to the north bay. Coming up in a bit though well be checking in later on about 4 zone forecast marty. All right, thanks a lot will happening today in the south bay it has been one year since the 19 yearold gunman opened fire at the gilroy garlic festival killing 3 people and injuring several others. Its going to be a somber evening for the community of gilroy as they come together this evening to remember and honor the lives that were lost kron 4 Sarah Stinson joins us live from go right now. She has more on the event. Sarah. Marty all morning long people have been stopping by the memorial here at Christmas Hill park remembering and healing still from what happened one year ago it was chaos and it was tragedy that struck Christmas Hill park during the garlic the gilroy garlic festival an annual then people look forward to they take pride in it and that year. It turned into the most devastating event in these communities history and theyre still healing but they are very strong you can you know that just from talking to people on the street the 3 victims to 3 people died including a 6 yearold boy were talking about trevor irby kayla selzer and stephen romero, all killed one year ago at the gilroy garlic festival when a 19 yearold man used an Assault Rifle to fire into the festivals crowd. The fbis domestic terrorism investigation is still ongoing to this day we still dont know the motive of the gunman. And i talked with people here one man walks past the memorial every day. He says this is something hell never forget. You know what happened was really quiet. Its quite terrible. You know why that person you know chose to do what he did. Its kind of shocked the community because its a pretty close knit community. I just feel that. You know its something youll never forget every day go by that memorial i walked by. Across my heart. Because you know i wish these people that theyre in a better place nobody. You know, nobody really has an answer for why. We may not know why but we know that the gunman had a goal to shoot as many people as possible and he was stopped by 3 hero look at Gilroy Police officers, thos
