Mortgage Funding. Access your equity. Stay in your home. Have peace of mind. Im 29 and then get there and this i mean this is pretty is why cost so much to live a right while the rest of the country a sweltering were nice and comfortable even parts of
Southern California really toasty today and in the meantime weve got a nice little touch of fog right there at the
Golden Gate Bridge in sunshine for much of the rest of the bay. What a nice finish the weekend. It was and weve carried that on through more the morning hours. Theres definitely an increasing cloud cover being seen right now though working its way into the bay from the north. Youre really seeing that cloud cover now over
San Francisco in the north bay and conditions will continue to get just a bit cloudy here this afternoon. Temperatures are certainly comfortable though 60s 70s right now with conquered pittsburgh and fairfield all in the low 70s, dublin and livermore upper 60s while
Berkeley Oakland and alameda, egypt 65 now later today, 70s and 80s will be our daytime highs a nice afternoon ahead and some more nice weather had the rest of the week, ill talk more about that still to come daria in news from the u. S. Supreme court. Gay and employees are protected from
Workplace Discrimination under a landmark law that was pas ed back in 1964. Its called title 7 and bars job discrimination based on in a 6, 3, vote. The justices ruled that that includes orientation. Its a resounding victory for lgbtq rights the decision means employers cannot fire a person for their orientation in a separate ruling, the conservative court also held that transgender people are also protected from workplace. Bias. And joining us this morning to talk more about this landmark decision is
Samuel Garrett pate with equality california. Thank you for joining us this morning and this has to be a good day for equality rights. Thanks for having me. Yes absolutely. It was i would say its its welcome news, especially given the fact that the
Trump Administration attempted to roll back
Health Care Protections healthcare nondiscrimination protections on friday. So this is a pretty clear rebuke from the
Supreme Court and one that we certainly welcome the how long had this been making its way through the courts how long did this take. Well advocates like us on and lawyers at the aclu have been arguing for decades that the 1964 civil rights title 7 which prohibits
Workplace Discrimination. On the basis of a number of characteristics, including sacks applies to lgbtq plus in flight that because an employer who discriminates against the transgender employee because their gender identity doesnt match their or an employer to discriminate against a employee because they are in a relationship with someone of the same starts inherently that is discrimination. And neil the justice on the
Supreme Court and 5 of his colleagues, including the chief justice, another republican appointee agreed with us today. So does this mean that now people say who had discrimination complaints over these many years. That were denied or ruled. You know invalid that now they can go back or is going to be an avalanche of now new suits based on this new decision. Well say thats here in the state of california we already had state robust state protections for lgbtq plus employees unfortunately, over half of states didnt have those protections at the state level and so the only projections that existed, were title 7 of the 1964
Civil Rights Act. And what this says is that anyone who has been who has drop a case under title 7 of the 1964
Civil Rights Act saying that they were discriminated against because of their sacked by way of their orientation or gender identity that is indeed
Unlawful Discrimination neil gorsuch that justice for the
Supreme Court who wrote todays opinion said specifically those who adopted the
Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result. But he goes on to say when the express terms of the statute give us one answer and extra textual consideration suggest another its no contracts only the written word is the law and all persons are entitled to its benefit so it doesnt matter whether or not knows who are drafting the law necessarily understood that it would extend to orientation or gender identity, what they did understand was that what they were writing was that it is illegal under federal law to discriminate against an employee because of their and that the discrimination in these 3 cases that the
Supreme Court decided today. Was discrimination on the basis of because it was their orientation and or gender identity well ok, so we could see actually a lot in other states like you said that had. They didnt have the laws that we have here in california to back that up. And maybe well see something come out of that and all of those people that were affected. Whats important is that we dont want that we build on its right so this is great for lgbtq plus employees. But there are still areas in which lgbtq plus people face in all other aspects of their life whether its public accommodations. Or where even though california has these protections at the state level there are clear protections at the federal level and so thats why the senate needs to pass the equality act which the house has already passed its federal a federal bill that has been sitting on
Mitch Mcconnells that for over a year that would provide clear
Legal Protections to the lgbtq plus community they need to pass it the president needs to sign it. This is a clear signal from the
Supreme Court that they believe that a federal law protects lgbtq plus in place we need to make sure people are protected in all aspects of what no one should face discrimination in this country. Well he hasnt yet and theres no sign that the
Senate Majority leader is going to act. On that bill does that just laser focus then your efforts on november because it doesnt appear as though the
Trump Administration is going to do any do you any favors. Not an overwhelming majority of americans dont believe the lgbtq plus people should face discrimination an overwhelming majority of americans believe that that we should have
Racial Justice in this country and that that we need to dismantle systemic racism. They believe that we need to. Combat this global and you know time and again, the president has shown that hes not up to that task the senate has shown that theyre willing to back up anything he doesnt surf thats their case to americans. I think youll see a resounding defeat for them in november. Okay well see thanks a lot for joining really interesting perspective and and behind the news gives us though a breath of what this means thank you. Absolutely thanks for having me. Well a gorgeous start to the day so far but cloud cover is already increasing you can see these lines of clouds pushing into the bay area from as they were stuck in traffic on the upper deck of the bay bridge yesterday afternoon. It was shut down for a time because of this black lives matter protests that happened was a caravan blocking the bridge. And that lasted for several hours. Sanaz Tahernia has more. If you go back to life as we knew it as a january that is unsafe. There is virus and every community in the
United States there are many many
Vulnerable People in every communities. So if you go back such that youre shaking hands, hugging staying a foot away from people being right next to people at a bar or a restaurant and not wear and now this. You are going to get hit now, its not its not a 100 certainty it may be that you do that you get away with it for a little while and people may say see its not so bad thats just like a if you smoke 2 packs a day every day of your maybe youre not going to get lung cancer right away, but you have a far better chance of having bad outcome a lot of cities and counties here in the baarea have reopened the north bay a lot of the wineries are now open. What do you think about specifically
San Franciscos approach i know that we have been one of the slower counties to reopen despite being the very first county in the country to close what do you think about the approach that weve been taking here. Well we owe a incredible debt of gratitude air and to our
Health Directors and to our people who took the a warning seriously as of today across the 3 months of this pandemic there have been 45 people in
San Francisco that di 45. People there have been more than 20,000 people in new york city so the authorities in
San Francisco are being appropriately careful and i think the people in
San Francisco for being appropriately careful. It is time where we can begin opening up, but we have to do it slowly. We have to stay at least 6 feet apart, we have to wear masks if youre going to be an in contact with anybody that includes. Outside when you going to be in close contact with people i think if we do that we have to be testing people who get sick, we have to going after their contacts, weve got a very robust
Contact Tracing program which i think were doing it really really smart and at the end we will say that was a little bit inconvenient and we saved 10s of thousands of lives because we did this way. That interview was first aired on kronon our 24 7 streaming app and you can watch that and more just download the app its free. As we head to the break, lets take a peek at.
