It was i would say its its welcome news, especially given the fact that the Trump Administration<\/a> attempted to roll back Health Care Protections<\/a> healthcare nondiscrimination protections on friday. So this is a pretty clear rebuke from the Supreme Court<\/a> and one that we certainly welcome the how long had this been making its way through the courts how long did this take. Well advocates like us on and lawyers at the aclu have been arguing for decades that the 1964 civil rights title 7 which prohibits Workplace Discrimination<\/a>. On the basis of a number of characteristics, including sacks applies to lgbtq plus in flight that because an employer who discriminates against the transgender employee because their gender identity doesnt match their or an employer to discriminate against a employee because they are in a relationship with someone of the same starts inherently that is discrimination. And neil the justice on the Supreme Court<\/a> and 5 of his colleagues, including the chief justice, another republican appointee agreed with us today. So does this mean that now people say who had discrimination complaints over these many years. That were denied or ruled. You know invalid that now they can go back or is going to be an avalanche of now new suits based on this new decision. Well say thats here in the state of california we already had state robust state protections for lgbtq plus employees unfortunately, over half of states didnt have those protections at the state level and so the only projections that existed, were title 7 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act<\/a>. And what this says is that anyone who has been who has drop a case under title 7 of the 1964 Civil Rights Act<\/a> saying that they were discriminated against because of their sacked by way of their orientation or gender identity that is indeed Unlawful Discrimination<\/a> neil gorsuch that justice for the Supreme Court<\/a> who wrote todays opinion said specifically those who adopted the Civil Rights Act<\/a> might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result. But he goes on to say when the express terms of the statute give us one answer and extra textual consideration suggest another its no contracts only the written word is the law and all persons are entitled to its benefit so it doesnt matter whether or not knows who are drafting the law necessarily understood that it would extend to orientation or gender identity, what they did understand was that what they were writing was that it is illegal under federal law to discriminate against an employee because of their and that the discrimination in these 3 cases that the Supreme Court<\/a> decided today. Was discrimination on the basis of because it was their orientation and or gender identity well ok, so we could see actually a lot in other states like you said that had. They didnt have the laws that we have here in california to back that up. And maybe well see something come out of that and all of those people that were affected. Whats important is that we dont want that we build on its right so this is great for lgbtq plus employees. But there are still areas in which lgbtq plus people face in all other aspects of their life whether its public accommodations. Or where even though california has these protections at the state level there are clear protections at the federal level and so thats why the senate needs to pass the equality act which the house has already passed its federal a federal bill that has been sitting on Mitch Mcconnells<\/a> that for over a year that would provide clear Legal Protections<\/a> to the lgbtq plus community they need to pass it the president needs to sign it. This is a clear signal from the Supreme Court<\/a> that they believe that a federal law protects lgbtq plus in place we need to make sure people are protected in all aspects of what no one should face discrimination in this country. Well he hasnt yet and theres no sign that the Senate Majority<\/a> leader is going to act. On that bill does that just laser focus then your efforts on november because it doesnt appear as though the Trump Administration<\/a> is going to do any do you any favors. Not an overwhelming majority of americans dont believe the lgbtq plus people should face discrimination an overwhelming majority of americans believe that that we should have Racial Justice<\/a> in this country and that that we need to dismantle systemic racism. They believe that we need to. Combat this global and you know time and again, the president has shown that hes not up to that task the senate has shown that theyre willing to back up anything he doesnt surf thats their case to americans. I think youll see a resounding defeat for them in november.
