(mk)michelle kingston, mkingstonnewspolice will stay on scene tonight investigating inside of the home.they tell us we will not receive an updaknow is the yog knockum, oakland"just pray comes through.. come on, right now the baby is at the hospital as we speak so we just pray that he makes it through."right now -- a four year old boy is in critical condition at the hospital ... after being shot in the head. oakland police say it happened around two oclock on wednesday afternoon at a home on ritchie street in east oakland.they say a man and a woman have been detained -- but would not say how they were related to the young boy.we spoke to a man who says he's the brother of the man who lived in the home where the boy was shot and that he had been detained. he says the young boy was his brother's friend's son and that they were visiting when the young boy left the living room and went to a bedroom in the home.anthony wilson, brother of man detained"how four year olds do, bother everything, play with stuff, get into stuff they arent supposed to get into .. thats what happened. so there was a gun under the bed? under the bed"police would not confirm if the boy shot himself or if someone else shot him.they also would not say what kind of gun was used or how many shots were fired or if there were any other children there at the time of the shooting. father jayson landeza, oakland police dept chaplin"the communities here in the flatlands have had more than their fair share of tragedy in their own personal lives, their own families and within this community and i think trying, as best, all of us can for all of those families who are suffering is all we can do."quite a few neighbors stood outside watching the officers investigate.they all are hoping of course this young boy survives.in oakland michelle kingston kron 4 news (vicki) (vicki) what makes the measles so contagious? it's a question we've been asking, especially since the santa clara health department put out a notice yesterday alerting people of the 19 places that an infected person visited in the south bay. (grant) a fairmont family is considering legal action against their school district and the students they accuse of making a racist threat. edward russell junior posted this video on his facebook. he says there was a swastika spray-painted at vanden high school earlier this month... and his 17-year-old son was named in the graffiti. the sign has been mostly cleaned up - but if you look carefully, you can make it out. he says -- he was disappointed to learn the students responsible were not expelled...and that the school did ánotá treat the case as a hate crime. (vicki) also at vanden high school -- police are investigating another report of racist trheat. the school was closed today out of what school officials called -- an abundance of caution. at a news conference this morning -- the district's superintendent said -- the threat was made toward students at the high school yesterday. the superintendent said -- officials have since identified students who made the threat...and took disciplinary actions. (grant) the san jose unified school district is hiring school bus drivers. it turns out the district is having trouble finding and keeping drivers because many of them are heading to silicon valley. about 3-thousand children ride school buses every day to get to and from 90 different schooldistrict can be as many as 15 drivers short. the district's bus fleet manager says -- managers, dispatchers, even mechanics have been filling in behind the wheel.. he says -- searching for new drivers has been tough... because theyre competing with tech companies... which also need drivers.. (ken)the man who hit a woman with his car during a white nationalist rally in 2017 pleaded guilty to hate crimes today. james alex fields junior was convicted in december of first-degree murder by a virginia jury. heather heyer died during the rally and dozens of others were injured. the jury plus 419 years. heyer's parents agreed that they did not want prosecutors to seek the death penalty... her mother saying "there's no point in killing him... it would not bring back heather."ú fields was scheduled to be formally sentenced this week but court records show that hearing has been postponed until july. the 21 year old pleaded guilty in u-s district court to 29 hate crime charges in addition to the murder conviction. "women in american today are making history so fast that i think they cant even keep up with how much progress they're making because it's all over the world." - belva davis was the first woman of color to work as a television news reporter on the west coast of the united states."when i started in the business i was often asked to leave news conferences" in her five decades in the bay area news market working at three major television stations .. black radio and black newspaper ... she took on a lot of the early "knocks" for her gender and for her race.."i worked with people sometimes who didn't want to walk down the streets with me-photographers.. and there were other low moments ... notably, in 1964, the g-o-p convention at the cow palace.."former president eisenhower said something that set off the dixiecrats"and they came after my news director and i.. and they literally drove us from that building.. throwing things at us."track and there are many journalism milestones ... including her reporting from tanzania after the u.s. embassy bombings there "everyday 1000's of people.." "kron trip to africa ..a new level of journalism for me" retired since 2012, and today at age 85 .. belva is still quite active on boards and panels and at events.. she has written one book- 'never in my wildest dreams' - and is contemplating another. and she and her husband of 55- years.. bill moore .. have a bit more down time now.. they have both made history.. bill was in television news too .. and was the first black cameraman in california.. he now teaches video at ohlone college in fremont...."i think having each other to hear each other and to know the heart of this person is sincere.." looking at the landscape for professional and political women today.. "these are the receivers of the toil.. i hope they know it.. there were many women who have given up so much..fought so many battles to achieve the degree of success of ability"she has particular pride in the bay area women in positions of power.. some are her contemporaries like senator dianne feinstein .. others younger ..'i tell ya.. i am so proud of the women in this area" they now see the possibility for themselves and i think there's nothing that can make you happier than knowing you belong in what you call the winning circle"and she is also in what could be called the winning circle...in 2018 ... among her many awards and acknowledgements .. belva davis was inducted into the california hall of fame .. "well i tried to keep from crying.."and her words of wisdom for younger women and girls.. they don't have to have the blessing of anyone ..if you have a sense of self security.. and i'm hoping that's what we are passing on. (vicki) in the east bay... the u-s-g-s tested out it's new shake-alert system... at 11 this morning, cal o-e-s and the u-s-g-s sent out a test message to cell phones all over downtown oakland. cell phones in a 60 block area recived a message , similar to an amber alert message and there was an alert sound as well. it said earthquake emergency and this is only a test. this is all part of the effort to create the earthqauke warning system known as 'shakealert' that could one day give everyone a few seconds of warning before a big quake hits. (grant) relief could be here sooner than expected for the thousands of flood victims across the midwest. congress is moving forward with a 13-point-5 billion dollar disaster relief package that now includes help for business owners, farmers and families in the region. republican senator áchuck grassleyá from iowa says -- farmers in his state are in desperate need. "millions of bushels of flood soaked grains have spilled into murky flood waters. / "this was grain that farmers were counting on to pay the bills and to put this year's crop into the ground." (grant) the plan sets aside 3 billion dollars to help farmers recover. the bill now heads to the house for a vote. the senate could vote on the package as early as tomorrow.
