( lydia ) it happened around 10:30 last night at the best western heritage inn on clayton road. police have not released any details about the victim or howe that person died. ( darya ) we are following breaking news from overnight... cult leader and convicted murderer-- charles manson--- has died. ( james ) the california department of corrections says he died of natural causes yesterday. mason and his followers, a cult known as "the family," were behind a string of gruesome murders in california in 19-69. the attacks left seven people dead, including pregnant actress sharon tate. manson was also convicted in connection with the killings of two others. he was serving a total of nine consecutive life sentences -- and was denied parole 12 times. manson had suffered health problems in recent years. charles manson was 83 years old. ( darya ) happening today... attorneys will begin their closing arguments in the trial for the man accused of killing kate steinle on pier 14 in san francisco. now the judge is telling the jury that they can consider another charge in the case. jose garcia zarate is accused of intentionally shooting steinle in july of 2015. a judge has agreed to a prosecutor's request to allow the jury to not only consider the second degree murder charge... but also a 'first' degree murder charge. second degree applies to murder that is deliberate... but not pre- meditated. first degree murder is pre-meditated. the prosecution has been trying to prove that zarate pointed a gun at steinle and deliberately pulled the trigger. the defense argues that the gun went off by accident. ( darya ) happening now... investigators are trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash into a home in the south bay injuring three people. the plane took off from the reid hillview airport yesterday afternoon in san jose. it crashed just 300 yards north of the airport... hitting a home on the 21- hundred block of evelyn avenue. the three people on the plane were taken to the hospital. one of them suffered severe injuries. the others suffered only minor injuries. the plane had been rented from the airport and occupied by a student, passenger and instructor. there were people in the house but they were not injured. the f-a-a is investigating. ( james ) a daly city police officer is recovering after being injured while chasing car burglars. the burglaries happened at the at serramonte shopping center. police say a motorcycle officer was responding to reports that two men were breaking into cars. when the officer arrived... the men took off and the officer followed on interstate 280 towards san francisco. during the chase the officer lost control of his bike and crashed. he is expected to be okay. the two burglars were later arrested by san francisco police. ( james ) happening now... the search is on for a man who is missing who was last seen on a boat that was spinning out of control near half moon bay. another boater was found dead nearby. the coast guard has identified the missing man as tom tran. the coast guard was notified about the spinning boat... near pillar point yesterday afternoon. for several hours, the coast guard was not able to approach the boat because it is too dangerous. late last night they were finally able to recover the boat. ( darya ) in the north bay. an inmate who escaped from a corrections camp in solano county saturday has turned himself in. police say 27-year-old rashad vaca turned himself in to the vacaville police department. he was discovered missing during the inmate count at the delta conservation camp. vaca was serving a 12-year sentence for second-degree robbery with a gun and was scheduled for parole in 20-20. ( darya ) in the east bay... san leandro police are telling the public to clean out their cars... in an effort to curb increasing car burglaries. the warning comes after officers say 12 auto thefts were reported last week. the thefts took place late at night in the western part of town. and all of them involved shattering a window. witnesses say they saw a late model dark-colored honda civic with angled taillights and paper plates reading " victory" in the area when the burglaries took place. ( james ) happening now in san leandro....police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a man over the weekend. police say he man was trying to sell a cell phone when he was shot dead. the gunman still on the loose this morning. it happened saturday afternoon on east 14th street and 159th avenue-- near the bayfair center. the man died at the scene. police say the gunman drove away from the shooting. police have not released any other information about the gunman. ( james ) people who have lost loved ones to reckless driving and car crashes ... turned grief into activism at san francisco's city hall. the group "walk s-f" says there have been 17 pedestrian deaths in the city this year. they along with bay area families for safe streets marched to city hall ... to explain that speeding is a major factor in deadly crashes. the group hopes california will pass a law that would allow cities to use automated speed enforcement cameras ... to help reduce crashes. ( darya ) in national news... the senate republicans will begin debating a new tax reform bill after the thanksgiving holiday. the republicans in the house of representatives passed a tax reform bill last week. the bill being debated in the senate would also repeal the obama care individual mandate. republicans say the bill would help middle class americans while opponents of the bill say it would hurt seniors and low-income families. ( james ) back here in the bay area... the 60th annual san francisco international car show drew thousands over weekend to the moscone convention center.( darya ) the show has more that 600 cars displayed from 35 different makers. most of the cars are the 20-18 models. the majority of the vehicles show off the latest in car technology including electric...hybrid and alternative fuel cars. organizers say the car show can help narrow down the options for anyone interested in buying a new car. ( darya ) the car show will be in san francisco until november 28th. and it will be open on thanksgiving day. entrance is 10-dollars and kids under 12 get in for free. ( james ) and another big story we are following... we are learning more about kevin neal... the man who went on a shooting rampage in tehama county last week.( darya ) according to a neighbor... neal had threatened to kill one of his victims and go to an elementary school to kill the victim's son too. the man says says neal would scream at his neighbor across the road. police say neal killed 38- year-old danny elliott and elliott's mother, 68-year-old diana steele, in an apparent act of revenge on tuesday. neal also shot up the elementary school that elliott's son attends. he tried repeatedly to get into a classroom. he killed five people, including his wife... and wounded at least a dozen others before being shot and killed by police. ( darya ) a small but intimate prayer vigil was held this weekend in red bluff...for everyone involved in the tehama county shootings. pastors of all faiths came together to help a community that is still hurting. ( james ) a california deputy is off the job after video shows him repeatedly punching a homeless man. this cell phone video... shows what happened after deputies and modesto police responded to calls of a man acting erratic near a shopping center. the video appears to show deputy taylor knight hit that man at least 8 times with another officer on scene eventually trying to pull him back. the stanislaus county sheriff's office would not comment on the incident. the deputy was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. ( darya ) 3-million dollars and 9- months later ... morgan territory road in contra costa county is reopened. the storms last winter caused a landslide that shut down a few hundred feet of the road. crews worked to reconstruct the pavement... made improvements to the drainage and put up two walls on either side of the road to prevent future landslides. ( darya ) a mother and daughter are killed in a d-u-i crash. now... the victim's best friend is speaking out. on tuesday morning... police say jose lopez-perez was driving under the influence when he crashed head-on into estefania soto's car along highway 12 in sonoma. soto was killed. her daughter -- kaliyah -- died from her injuries three days later. ( darya ) a number of fundraisers have been set for the family -- so far they've raised 16- thousand dollars. ( james ) bart's new 775-car fleet may not be in service by thanksgiving. bart is busy working on fixing problems that surfaced during a test run. earlier this month... the 10- car pilot train arrived at the bay fair bart station during an inspection run. as it did the train automatically went into a mode that operated it as a three- car train.... locking the doors to the trailing seven cars. the manufacturer for the cars says it has a fix. and bart is aiming to re-test the 10-car pilot train later this month. ( james ) police arrested an attempted car theif in petaluma. police say they spotted 24-year-old tyler coon tampering with a car.... around 11 saturday night on western avenue. the suspect tried to outrun officers but was eventually captured. the victim identified coon as the suspect. he was arrested for tampering with a vehicle. ( james ) and police arrest a man in downtown petaluma after they say he pushed a security guard through a glass window at a bar. it happened at mcguire's pub on kentucky street. that's where police say 23-year-old hayden gregonis was asked to leave... but then came back and got into a fight with a security guard... ultimately pushing that guard through a glass window. police say two other businesses nearby were vandalized they're looking to see if there's a connection. ( james ) and another big story we are following... we are learning more about kevin neal... the man who went on a shooting rampage in tehama county last week.( darya ) according to a neighbor... neal had threatened to kill one of his victims and go to an elementary school to kill the victim's son too. the man says says neal would scream at his neighbor across the road. police say neal killed 38- year-old danny elliott and elliott's mother, 68-year-old diana steele, in an apparent act of revenge on tuesday. neal also shot up the elementary school that elliott's son attends. he tried repeatedly to get into a classroom. he killed five people, including his wife... and wounded at least a dozen others before being shot and killed by police. ( darya ) a california deputy is off the job after video shows him repeatedly punching a homeless man. this cell phone video... shows what happened after deputies and modesto police responded to calls of a man acting erratic near a shopping center. the video appears to show deputy taylor knight hit that man at least 8 times with another officer on scene eventually trying to pull him back. the stanislaus county sheriff's office would not comment on the incident. the deputy was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. ( james ) happening now... firefighters are trying to figure out what caused an apartment fire that killed three people including a 14- year-old girl in san jose. the fire happened saturday. one other person is still in critical condition this morning. firefighters say a family of 4 was trapped inside the building on 9th and reed streets. witnesses say it was the family's yells for help that woke them up in the early morning hours. the rest of the building was evacuated. no body else was injured. ( james ) 3-million dollars and 9-months later ... morgan territory road in contra costa county is reopened. the storm last winter caused a landslide that shut down a few hundred feet of the road. kron 4's ella sogomonian met with people who are thrilled by the news. a landslide badly damaged morgan territory road last february. but construction couldn't start until summer. people who live or use to road to get around had to take alternate routes that pushed their commute to one hour longer than usual. saturday the road reopened after nine months worth of work.neighbors brought together by the inconvenience were so happy they threw a block party.sot: scott macintyre, lives on morgan territory road// "it's been an experience it was good to get all the neighbors together it brought us much closer together as a community a lot of inconvenience a lot of driving a lot of speed bumps everybody can attest to that. 18 speed bumps a day if you didn't forget anything and 36 if you did so we're glad it's over and we want to thank flatiron and everybody that was involved getting the road back open for us."flatiron contractors put in long hours excavating, reconstructing pavement, making improvements to drainage and putting up two walls on either side to keep the soil back.signs are now flashing to let people know it is open. but morgan territory road stretches for 14 miles worrying some of another disaster.sot: jerry converse, commuter//"well it's only one section and there's a lot of morgan territory so it can happen somewhere else and that's what a lot of people worry about it's great you took care of this section but what's the rest of it look like? that's what theyre concerned about."sot: ella sogomonian, clayton// "county officials say it cost three million dollars to repair this road but they plan on being reimbursed from the state and federal government because they plan on classifying this as an emergency. in clayton ella sogomonian kron 4n ews" ( darya ) coming up on the kron 4 morning news ...an update on a deadly crash in the north bay that killed a mother and her daughter.we hear from a close friend of the victims. ( darya )breaking overnight news. santa clara county sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal stabbing that happened at a home near the san jose country club. when deputies got there - the 21 year old victim was dead. the suspect in the homicide was taken into custody. officials say the suspect and the victim were roommates. ( darya )in about half an hour ... safari west in sonoma county is set to reopen. it has been closed since the deadly northbay fires devastated the area last month. ( james ) kron 4's will tran has the details from safari west this morning. safari west will reopen later this morningit was abruptly shutdown more than a month ago when the fires raced over the hills and threatened to destroy this place and kill the wildlifeeveryone fled except the owner who stayed behind and did his best to save the safari.the safari is ok.the place could have reopened earlier but did not want to until all their phones and internet systems were back just in case they needed to call for help when the public returns.safari west reopens at 9 this morningin santa rosa will tran kron 4 news ( james ) the private cleanup applications for the north bay firestorms are due this week. santa rosa and sonoma county residents... who lost their home in the north bay fires... must submit their forms by wednesday and wait for the city or county to approve their application. officials say those who don't want to participate in the goverment-funded program are required to remove all the debris from their home at their own expense. ( darya ) a mother and daughter are killed in a d-u-i crash. now... the victim's best friend is speaking out. on tuesday morning... police say jose lopez-perez was driving under the influence when he crashed head-on into estefania soto's car along highway 12 in sonoma. soto was killed. her daughter -- kaliyah -- died from her injuries three days later. ( darya ) a number of fundraisers have been set for the family -- so far they've raised 16- thousand dollars. (james)a driver lost control and went off the road... killing the passenger in the front seat in sonoma county. it happened saturday morning at a construction site near san antonio creek, off highway 101. the c-h-p says the person was driving in a blocked off section. the car got caught on a steel bar. the driver and the person sitting in the back seat were injured during the fall. ( darya ) bart police have arrested a man for trying to rob a person at a san francisco bart station. the attack happened at the montgomery bart station. police say they attacker tried to take the victim's cell phone. when police arrived the found that the man was also wanted for a previous assault charge. that man is now prohibited from riding bart. ( james ) bart's new 775-car fleet may not be in service by thanksgiving. bart is busy working on fixing problems that surfaced during a test run. earlier this month... the 10- car pilot train arrived at the bay fair bart station during an inspection run. as it did the train automatically went into a mode that operated it as a three- car train.... locking the doors to the trailing seven cars. the manufacturer for the cars says it has a fix. and bart is aiming to re-test the 10-car pilot train later this month. ( james ) police arrested an attempted car theif in petaluma. police say they spotted 24-year-old tyler coon tampering with a car.... around 11 saturday night on western avenue. the suspect tried to outrun officers but was eventually captured. the victim identified coon as the suspect. he was arrested for tampering with a vehicle. ( darya ) and police arrest a man in downtown petalumaafte r they say he pushed a security guard through a glass window at a bar. it happened at mcguire's pub on kentucky street. there officers spotted the suspect 23-year-old hayden gregonistry to punch the security guard before pushing him through a glass window. gregonis had been removed from the bar before the incident. police also discovered that two other businesses in the area were vandalized but it's unclear if the incidents are connected. ( james ) people who have lost loved ones to reckless driving and car crashes ... turned grief into activism at san francisco's city hall. the group "walk s-f" says there have been 17 pedestrian deaths in the city this year. they along with bay area families for safe streets marched to city hall ... to explain that speeding is a major factor in deadly crashes. the group hopes california will pass a law that would allow cities to use automated speed enforcement cameras ... to help reduce crashes. ( james ) honda is recalling about 800-thousand odyssey minivans....because of problems with a latching system in the back seat. the recall includes vans made between 20-11 and 20-17. so far... at least 46 injuries have been reported. the vehicle's second-row seats can be adjusted side-to-side or removed. honda says that those seats can tip forward after braking - if they're not properly latched after being adjusted or re-installed. the company says the problem will not occur as long as the seats are properly latched. the company is now trying to educate owners on how to properly latch the seats until it comes up with a repair plan. ( darya ) happening in an hour... attorneys will begin their closing arguments in the trial for the man accused of killing kate steinle on pier 14 in san francisco. now the judge is telling the jury that they can consider another charge in the case. jose garcia zarate is accused of intentionally shooting steinle in july of 2015. a judge has agreed to a prosecutor's request to allow the jury to not only consider the second degree murder charge... but also a 'first' degree murder charge. second degree applies to murder that is deliberate... but not pre- meditated. first degree murder is pre-meditated. the prosecution has been trying to prove that zarate pointed a gun at steinle and deliberately pulled the trigger. the defense argues that the gun went off by accident. ( darya ) happening now... investigators are trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash into a home in the south bay injuring three people. the plane took off from the reid hillview airport yesterday afternoon in san jose. it crashed just 300 yards north of the airport... hitting a home on the 21- hundred block of evelyn avenue. the three people on the plane were taken to the hospital. one of them suffered severe injuries. the others suffered only minor injuries. the plane had been rented from the airport and occupied by a student, passenger and instructor. there were people in the house but they were not injured. the f-a-a is investigating. ( james ) a daly city police officer is recovering after being injured while chasing car burglars. the burglaries happened at the at serramonte shopping center. police say a motorcycle officer was responding to reports that two men were breaking into cars. when the officer arrived... the men took off and the officer followed on interstate 280 towards san francisco. during the chase the officer lost control of his bike and crashed. he is expected to be okay. the two burglars were later arrested by san francisco police. ( james ) happening now... the search is on for a man who is missing who was last seen on a boat that was spinning out of control near half moon bay. another boater was found dead nearby. the coast guard has identified the missing man as tom tran. the coast guard was notified about the spinning boat... near pillar point yesterday afternoon. for several hours, the coast guard was not able to approach the boat because it is too dangerous. late last night they were finally able to recover the boat. ( darya ) safari west in sonoma county is now reopen. it had been closed since the deadly northbay fires devastated the region last month.( james ) kron 4's will tran has the details from safari west this morning. safari west will reopen later this morningit was abruptly shutdown more than a month ago when the fires raced over the hills and threatened to destroy this place and kill the wildlifeeveryone fled except the owner who stayed behind and did his best to save the safari.the safari is ok.the place could have reopened earlier but did not want to until all their phones and internet systems were back just in case they needed to call for help when the public returns.safari west reopens at 9 this morningin santa rosa will tran kron 4 news ( james ) the private cleanup applications for the north bay firestorms are due this week. santa rosa and sonoma county residents... who lost their home in the north bay fires... must submit their forms by wednesday and wait for the city or county to approve their application. officials say those who don't want to participate in the goverment-funded program are required to remove all the debris from their home at their own expense. ( darya ) 3-million dollars and 9-months later ... morgan territory road in contra costa county is reopened. the storms last winter caused a landslide that shut down a few hundred feet of the road. crews worked to reconstruct the pavement... made improvements to the drainage and put up two walls on either side of the road to prevent future landslides. ( darya ) a mother and daughter are killed in a d-u-i crash. now... the victim's best friend is speaking out. on tuesday morning... police say jose lopez-perez was driving under the influence when he crashed head-on into estefania soto's car along highway 12 in sonoma. soto was killed. her daughter -- kaliyah -- died from her injuries three days later. ( darya ) a number of fundraisers have been set for the family -- so far they've raised 16- thousand dollars. ( darya ) a driver lost control and went off the road... killing the passenger in the front seat in sonoma county. it happened saturday morning at a construction site near san antonio creek... off highway 101. the c-h-p says the person was driving in a blocked off section of the road. the car got caught on a steel bar. the driver and the person sitting in the back seat were injured during the fall. ( james ) bart police have arrested a man for trying to rob a person at a san francisco bart station. the attack happened at the montgomery bart station. police say they attacker tried to take the victim's cell phone. when police arrived the found that the man was also wanted for a previous assault charge. that man is now prohibited from riding bart. ( james ) bart's new 775-car fleet may not be in service by thanksgiving. bart is busy working on fixing problems that surfaced during a test run. earlier this month... the 10- car pilot train arrived at the bay fair bart station during an inspection run. as it did the train automatically went into a mode that operated it as a three- car train.... locking the doors to the trailing seven cars. the manufacturer for the cars says it has a fix. and bart is aiming to re-test the 10-car pilot train later this month. ( james ) police arrested an attempted car theif in petaluma. police say they spotted 24-year-old tyler coon tampering with a car.... around 11 saturday night on western avenue. the suspect tried to outrun officers but was eventually captured. the victim identified coon as the suspect. he was arrested for tampering with a vehicle. ( james ) and police arrest a man in downtown petaluma after they say he pushed a security guard through a glass window at a bar. it happened at mcguire's pub on kentucky street. that's where police say 23-year-old hayden gregonis was asked to leave... but then came back and got into a fight with a security guard... ultimately pushing that guard through a glass window. police say two other businesses nearby were vandalized they're looking to see if there's a connection. ( darya ) happening today... peak fire season comes to an end in santa claraalamedacontra costa and the western ends of stanislaus and san joaquin counties. recent rains and cooler temperatures across the region have lowered the threat of wildfires. and to keep the threat of fires down... firefighters say people should service home heating systems... clean chimneys... test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. also ... burn permit suspensions will be lifted today... meaning people with valid burn permits can resume burning on desginated burn days.
