>> duncan: taiwan tensions, the self-ruled island rejects china's reunification call with a show of military force. and imagine this: iceland with no ice, because it's melting fast. cbs news is there. and later, a phlebotomist treats his patients to a song. >> this is the cbs weekend news, from new york, here's jericka duncan. >> duncan: good evening to our viewers in the west and thanks for joining us. this has been a rough weekend if you are flying southwest. nearly 2,000 flights have been cancelled leaving passengers scrambling. the airline blames disruptive weather and air-traffic control issues, although the f.a.a. attributes the disruptions to staffing and aircraft issues. no other airline has reported similar problems today. cbs' lilia luciano is in los angeles at the international airport there. lilia, it appears those problems really started before today. >> reporter: that's right, jericka, they started friday afternoon and flights have been stacking up ever since, all of those cancellations, we have been hearing from passengers today who are frustrated and say they just want to get home. crowds and chaos at many airports across the country this weekend in the wake of flight cancellations from southwest, the nation's largest domestic airline. what has that been like? >> it has been stressful, not been fun, you know, it is not a good way to end our honeymoon. >> reporter: more than 1,000 flights were cancelled today, that is nearly a third of the airline schedule. another 800 flights were scrapped saturday. this was the scene in miami. >> kind of makes you apprehensive on traveling and counting on, you know, the flights to get back home. maybe driving next time. >> reporter: the disruptions have left passengers stranded, standing in long lines or stuck on hold. >> after eight hours you get pretty upset. >> reporter: the airline blames the cancellations and delays on air-traffic control issues and weather, but no other airline is as severely affected. >> i had to go ahead and book with united, you know, an extra $1,000 just to try to get home tomorrow. >> reporter: southwest pilot union is denying it is a sick out or protest. on friday it asked the court to temporarily block the airline's covid vaccine mandates. southwest is urging customers to go to their website for updated information and rebooking, they are apologizing for the massive disruption and say they are trying to get everyone home quickly and safely. jericka. >> duncan: so frustrating for all of those passengers. thank you, lilia. authorities in new york have released the man who apparently prompted a security scare aboard a republic airway flight. it happened saturday, the plane made an emergency landing at laguardia airport, first responders held the man down on the tarmac. officials now describe the event as a misunderstanding. well, covid continues its latest retreat. new infections are down 20% ove. new infections are down 20 the past two weeks, deaths down 14%. despite progress, america's overall pandemic recovery is struggling. cbs' mark strassmann explains. ( bleep ) >> most-- can you watch your language? >> no. >> you are around kids. >> reporter: more than a moment, short of a disorder, covid america has functioning anxiety. day after day, living with its lingering virus. >> we will not comply. we will not comply. >> reporter: upset, uncertain, >> upset, unc on edge, frustrated other people who ironically feel the same way won't come to their senses. >> we want to end this pandemic. we are all exhausted by it. >> reporter: including most vaccinated americans. our new cbs poll found 56% of them said they were at risk because of the unvaccinated. the virus with no end in sight has killed more than 700,000 americans. there is some hope, cases now declining in 32 states. >> one, two, three. >> reporter: and pfizer is hoping its vaccine for kids ages to 11empraly the end of the month. not a moment too soon as the delta variant remains pitiless. our relationship status withns america's economy also complicated. cash happy consumers want to spend but too often the message in stores, we're out of that. >> we're just having a hard time finding the types of things that we want. >> reporter: empty grocery shelves in north carolina, food shortages for schools, and off the coast of southern california a half million shipping containers wait for unloading. fewer than 200,000 new jobs were created last month, a major disappointment. even with millions of openings, employers can't find good help these days-- or any help, like this restaurant manager. >> it's harder with everyone doing multiple jobs, some of us are accommodating, like, five to six positions during one shift. >> reporter: millions of jobless people now stay home. why risk working and catching covid, especially for mediocre money. more pandemic stress is on its way for private employers. osha is still working on issuing emergency guidance for mandatory vaccinations and testing for any company that has at least 100 employees. at least 24 states have promised to fight it. jericka. >> duncan: mark strassmann for us in atlanta, thank you. anger over covid vaccine mandates led to violent clashes in rome this weekend including the arrest of several far right extremists. cbs' chris livesay is there. >> reporter: violence over the vaccine in the heart of rome. what started off as a restless yet peaceful protest sparked a tinderbox as demonstrators stormed the headquarters of italy's biggest trade union. some were neo-fascists. as they marched towards the prime minister office, police fired water canons and tear gas, all of it, "for freedom," they shout. freedom from a national vaccine mandate. starting next weekend italians are required to show proof of vaccination, recovery or a negative covid test in order to enter the workplace, the strictest such law in the world. "i consider this to be a criminal and cowardly black mail by our highest institutions," says maria. "there will finally be a revolution in italy says carolina, we won't go to work." impassioned by minority voices, polls show most italians believe the new rules help ensure the hell of last year never happens again, when they ran out of space to bury the dead. the violence even created a security incident for u.s. house speaker nancy pelosi here for a summit with parliamentary leaders. she was at a rome church when the violence outside led bodyguards to escort her tosafey jecka. >> duncan: here in the united guards to esc states positive reviews for its handling of the pandemic, president biden's approval rating has stabilized at 50%, according o our new poll. but as cbs' christina ruffini reports, there are still some big hurdles ahead. >> reporter: when it comes to president biden, build back better plan the thing mostbidenu americans say they know about it is the price. >> not enough americans know what is in this bill. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll finds that while a slight majority approves of the bill, only 10% say they know specifically what is in it. but 59% have heard it could cost $3.5 trillion. something republicans have repeatedly criticized. >> they really should be working with us on an infrastructure package that would pass overwhelmingly, but instead they just have an insatiable appetite to raise taxes and spend more money. >> reporter: the bipartisan infrastructure bill is still waiting for a vote in the house, ile democrats debate the size and scope of the larger spending plan. the cbs new poll finds americans overwhelmingly support individual elements of the bill like medicare expansion and paid family leave. >> i'm genuinely optimistic that in the senate we're going to get the build back better bill and pass it and get it over to the house. >> reporter: but former president trump who held a rally in iowa yesterday urged republican resistance. >> congressional republicans must stand strong. this is not a time of for republicans to fold. >> reporter: mr. trump has not ruled out a 2024 run. >> i can't say keep america great, so i'm back to make america great again/comma again, make america great again, again, i don't know. >> it is. >> reporter: this is amazing. we met glaciologist m. jackson on top of one of her favorite places in the world. what is this called? >> we're on the glacier-- this is iceland's third largest glacier. >> reporter: that is the largest glacier mass in europe, more than half a mile thick in some parts. it is now dissolving before our eyes. getting to this glacier now requires a 30-minute hike over dry land that just a few years ago was covered in ice. jackson, who lives in oregon, has been studying iceland's glaciers for more than a decade. what exactly is happening here on iceland? >> there is roughly 400 glaciers on this island and the majority of them are melting at rates never before seen in human history. this island is losing its ice. >> reporter: and to see that she took us inside this ice cave-- the pattern that the ice makes is so cool-- to show us what is essentially the melting glacier's plumbing system. >> all that water has to go somewhere, and it makes these tubes, they are bigger than they have ever been before to transport all that water. these tube was naturally happen but the scale of them is unnatural. >> reporter: and that's because of human-caused climate change. ice all over the planet is rapidly melting. scientists say all that water rushing into the world's oceans is not only making sea levels rise, but could also be changing the ocean's circulation and fueling more extreme weather events such as hurricanes and heat waves. m. jackson and her fellow researchers have launched a unique effort to bring attention, the very real possibility that iceland could lose nearly all of its ice in ea. >> driven to witness the ice before it's gone. >> reporter: they produced a short film called "after ice," using historical photos paired where drone footage to show the rapid decrease of the island's glaciers. >> want to find some icebergs?
