Reporter through Disaster Unemployment assistance which is generally available to self employed individuals with the parent president declares a disaster. The official covid19 guidance still makes no mention of Disaster Relief for the self employed. We are very pleased with the increase in Unemployment Benefits up to 600 on top ofar providing. The federal stimulus will supplement state benefits. Californians already getting unemployment may get an additional 600 a week. Around 1000 total. Even the selfemployed will get that 600 from the feds for up to four months. There was no mention of the Disaster Assistance which could provide the selfemployed the same benefits as the rest of us. Our doors are shut by the state. It is not like this is our choice. Reporter unfortunately they say this disaster declaration doesnt automatically mean the folks who are selfemployed now qualified for this Disaster Unemployment assistance. They say theyre waiting on more guidance from the feds. The Governor Cuomo calls new york the canary in the coal mine. Warning other states they could become just like the empire state. We spoke to an epidemiologist at Stanford School of medicine. Doctor Stephen Goodman believes there is reason for cautious optimism. Where are the ventilators . Where are the gowns .
