Other guy. And tonight, the question how long will the other guy stick around . And some people in the bay area had to wait to exercise their right to vote. The lines that stretched for hours. Now at 11 00 and streaming on cbsn bay area, were counting up the votes from the key races across the bay area and california. First, lets start with the up to minute results in the democratic president ial race here in california. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders has been declared the winner now with 30 of the vote followed by biden with 20 and Michael Bloomberg with 17 . Elizabeth warren took 12 . Prop 13 is californias only state proposition on the ballot tonight. Its all about money for schools. 15billion to be exact. It needs a majority to pass. Right now the yesses have it with 57 . Measure e would restrict new offices being built if the city cant meet new state mandated Affordable Housing goals. Right now the yesses have it. Measure d finds Property Owners who leave their Retail Store Fronts empty, it requires two thirds majority to pass. The yesses have it with 68 of the vote. The city of santa claras measure c would establish 6 districts. One City Council Member would be elected in each district. A majority is needed here as well. 96 of precincts reporting. The candidates could win outright tonight. We have reporters live across the bay area with results and reaction to the important races. In the race for the white house, big night for joe biden and senator Bernie Sanders. Biden is projected to win massachusetts, arkansas, tennessee, oklahoma, alabama, North Carolina and virginia. And tonight the ap is projecting sanders will seize victory in super tuesdays biggest prize, california. He won also in d utah. When we began this race for the presidency, everybody said it couldnt be done but tonight, i tell you with absolute confidence were going to win the democratic nomination and we are going to defeat the most dangerous president in the history of this country. We are putting together an unprecedented grass roots multi generational, multiracial movement. It is a movement which speaks to the working families of this country who are sick and s for wages and seeing all new income and wealth going to the top 1 . On top of his 8 wins, biden still has a shot at the nights second biggest prize. Hes battling Bernie Sanders for an upset victory in texas. Folks, its still early, but things are looking awful, awful good. For those who have been knock down, counted out, left behind, this is your campaign [cheers applause] just a few days ago, the press declared the campaign dead. And then came South Carolina and they had something to say about it. And were told well, when it got to super tuesday, it would be over. Well, it may be over for the other guy. Kpix 5 political analyst melissa cane joins us now. Biden won just as big, especially if he does in fact take texas. Thats right. So winning a state like texas in addition to the other Southern State that is he seems to be doing really well in, i think really feeds into the narrative around him that he is someone whos able to win in sort of more diverse places, win in the south, in non Traditional Democratic strong holds and that plays into the issue of electability. Hes saying these are folks i can actually bring in that i appeal to. But i will say this. California i wrote it down. California has 416 atlarge delegates not atlarge delegates, pledge delegates. Texas only has 228. While they are two of the largest by far, california is still the much bigger prize than texas. Texas is to some degree also really a totem that shows i win where its diverse, i win in places that are not Traditional Democratic strong holds. I think that fits nicely with joe bidens narrative as to why he should be the nominee. A celebration for Bernie Sanders supporters. At least here in california. Joe vazquez is at the Candidates Campaign headquarters in oakland. Reporter the Victory Party is on right now. You can see, its karaoke time here at Bernie Sanders headquarters here in oakland. Enquite a nning california, so celebration tonight, but joe biden prevailed in other parts of the country and frankly, that has some bernie supporters uneasy. Joe biden, hes, you know, a very famous man. Thats all i can say. Hes got a long track record of being in politics, but bernie has a track record of getting things done and having moral conviction. And its going to be a strong rivalry between the two. Reporter we saw a lot of enthusiasm tonight among younger voters. There was a long line at the poll near uc Berkeley Campus tonight. Some of these folks so young, they were voting for the first time. The big question tonight, can this youth vote that turned out in the primary continue to Gain Momentum as election season rolls along . Reporting live in oakland, im joe vazquez, kpix 5. All right, heres a look now at the gop race for president. Donald trump well ahead in a land slide. 93 of the vote there. Bill weld, 3 . Joe walsh, 2 . 45 of precincts reporting. Definitely winning by a land slide there. Im Juliette Goodrich live outside san jose state university. And the polls may be closed at 8 00, but that didnt mean the last vote was cast here. Thats because students were lined up and those alike here to cast their vote. And you can see them stretching outside the Library Doors here. Some of these students standing here up to an hour and a half. They were very dedicated. Some of them voting for the first time. And i asked some of the students, you know, why they were here. And particularly what the issues were that they were voting for. How long have en waiting in line . Little over an hour now. Reporter was there something that drew you to the polls specifically or would you vote no matter what . Both. I think its our duty as american citizens to put our vote. We have the privilege to vote. Reporter this is right outside of the library and yes, the polls are officially closed, but for anyone thats been in this line, they still will have the opportunity to come in, go inside the library, and cast their vote. What brings you to the polls . Would you vote no matter what or is there a specific reason . No matter what. No matter what because every vote matters. Were here to change whats going on. Im voting bernie. Reporter keep in mind, youre on a college campus, so you have a lot of new voters, those voting for the first time. You also have a lot of passionate voters, those showing up to vote for someone who took california, Bernie Sanders. In san jose, Juliette Goodrich, kpix 5. Now, as those results come in, the wrap parties are wrapping up. Kpix is at mannys in San Francisco where some supporters are still hanging out at this hour. Betty. Reporter thats right, still going strong. This party is pretty much wrapping up at this hour, but at the height of it, we saw 500 people in through these doors at mannys in the mission. This really is a hub for silv engagement. Tonight, i have with my michael fisher. What was the vibe like . It was amazing to see everyone out here come out. I came out with friends and we watched the election together. And it was great to just talk with people and see what theyre thinking, why they voted for Different Things and what issues were important. I love mannys because its a great space and you get to meet you know, hang out with people. Reporter its a live chat o you can see from people who are outside of your Friends Group as well. You see a great Cross Section of San Francisco. Reporter interestingly, you told me you led the yang gang hang at Stanford University and you stuck by him this morning. I stuck with him since the beginning. It will help eradicate poverty. Thats something we need to abo San Francisco. Reporter thank you so much for your time. I know many people like mikey will think about who they should throw their support behind, but theyre still soaking in all the results. Betty yu, kpix 5. Checking one of the big races in san jose tonight, measure e is a property transfer tax that would generate 70 million for the general fund. This one needs a majority of win. Right now, the yesses have it with 53 of the vote. Kpix 5 is live in san jose where voters gathered earlier tonight. Len. Reporter thats right, many of the hard working volunteers for the south Bay Labor Council have gone home. They were canvassing and phone banking right up until the 8 00 hour. As we see from some of the pictures earlier, there was quite a crowd here. They had a chance to celebrate. One of the big news items coming out of this night is the City Council Races leading our incumbents, sergio himmen easy, those candidates can win outright tonight. We spoke earlier with silvia urenas. You never know what voters are going to do. Im not going to project anything. Im going to keep close tabs on the numbers and hope for the best. It doesnt matter what the numbers end up being. My heart is with our community and i will serve in any capacity, whether its elected or not. Reporter also in San Jose City council, matt mayhan has a pretty big lead in district 10. And newcomer david cohen is in a trite race and could be headed for a run off in november. One of the significant thing coming out of this is there might be a progressive majority on the San Jose City council. That could affect a lot of things down the road such as rent control and labor contracts, things like that. Its something were going to have to watch over the coming weeks. Len ramirez, kpix 5. Contra costa county has its first confirmed case of coronavirus. Tonight, thats not the only new case here in the bay area. Plus a tense School Board Meeting tonight here at San Ramon Valley unified as more than 400 teachers protested as their union inch developing news, more bay area residents tested positive for the coronavirus tonight. Contra costa county and berkeley both reporting their first cases. Kpix 5s Andrea Constand with what weve just learned. Reporter these two cases are very different in berkeley. Health officials have an idea of how the patient contracted the virus, but here in contra costa county, they are still searching for the answer and the concern is is that this is not the only case. This case suggests that coronavirus or covid 19 may be circulating in contra costa county. [no audio ] reporter now heres what we know about the patient. He is a man over the age of 18 and has an underlying medical condition. He was admitted to a hospital on sunday with respiratory flu like symptoms. He is currently in critical condition. Health Officials Say there is no known travel history or contact with a coronavirus patient. Right now theyre retracing his steps to see if others he came in contact with have been infected as well. We dont want to overreact. We dont want to underreact. We want to be smart and prepare ourselves and our family. We want to practice good hygiene. And i dont think panic will help anyone. Reporter in the city of berkeley, the Health Department is telling us this is not a case of community transmission. This person believes they were exposed to the virus while traveling abroad in italy. Dr. Lisa hernandez says this patient started to self isolate, but the Health Department still retraced the individuals steps. What we know so far, we finished doing our interview with that individual and we are working with those exposed and there are no risks to the general public because of this case. Reporter now, both are presumptive positive cases which means they tested positive at a local lab, but now all these samples are going to be sent over to the cdc in atlanta for confirmation. Reporting live in contra costa county, kpix 5. Teachers in one east Bay School District say theyre prepared to strike. Hundreds of teachers protested at the san ramon Board Meeting tonight. More on their demands, katie. Reporter veronica, more than 400 teachers showed up to demonstrate. Theyve been working without a o ey say at a stand still. We dont want to strike, but we wil reporter the teachers say the district has already agreed to 4 pay raises. Thats not the issue. The sticking points are now smaller class sizes, additional programs for special needs students and more School Counselors and school psychologists. District representatives say the board wants to provide more services for students, but they simply dont have the money, partly due to a decline in enrollment. Its a hard area to move into for sure, just like anywhere in the bay area. So were not seeing kids moving in and were seeing far more kids graduate than we are enrolling as kindergartens. I dont want to be here and i feel frustrating that we have to be back year after year and i truly hope this cothe members have already voted to strike if they arent able to reach an agreement soon. Both sides will be back at the Bargaining Agreement table tomorrow. Open house next thursday night to try to public support. Live in danville, kpix 5. All right and its nice and balmy out there at this hour of the night. We got close to the bay area. There are some surprising results as we get toward the weekend. Right now, the numbers are mostly in the 50s. Daytime highs today got as warm as 85 in santa rosa at the airport. It was 87 downtown. That 85 was good enough for a record. Concord, 12 degrees above average. Santa rosas 85, 22 Degrees North of where it should be for this time of the year. Overnight tonight, upper 40s and low 50s. Melissa, we havent talked too much of bloomberg and Elizabeth Warren. What happened there and where do they go from here . Its unclear exactly what theyre going to do. I can tell you right now on twitter, at angry at Elizabeth Warren and very vigorously calling her to get out of the race. Theyre sort of blaming her for why he has not done better today. In addition, we know Michael Bloombergs reassessing his campaign. But he could still stay in it. For example, this big show nothing california might be what he needs to give him some support and say maybe there is a path for me somehow. Hes got the money to do it. He made a big gamble. He certainly did. But you dont wnstas a punch li you want to at least win one stay. Guys, we have news on steph curriys possible return.
