patients in alameda county have been tested for the illness that has forced china to take some extreme measures. kpix 5 the andrea nakano tells us there is no confirmed cases but officials are taking reports about symptoms seriously. >> reporter: here at sfo tonight there are no passengers arriving from wuhan china, that's because the entire city of wuhan is under quarantine, and all flights have been canceled. but the alameda county health department is looking into whether or not the virus is already here in the bay area. this is the scene at wuhan. mike disinfection point to make the train station is turning people away to keep them from leaving the city. in all, three cities in china are being walked down effecting an unprecedented eight teen million people. >> we suggest to them by having a strong action, not only will they will control the outbreak in their country, but they will also minimize the chances of this outbreak spreading internationally. >> reporter: the alameda county health department is looking into whether or not the virus may have already spread to the east.. health officials confirm several people have been tested for the virus but none of them has come out positive at this point. >> we don't have any confirmed cases in the bay area that i am aware of. the only one of them aware of in the united states and is in washington state. >> reporter: the death toll has now jumped to 25 in china and has sickened hundreds of others. of the roughly 10 cases that are being investigated in the east bay, only a few of them have had samples sent out for testing at the cdc in atlanta. those to haitians are under home isolation but doctor pons says it's highly unlikely any of them has the coronavirus.? we do it is very low risk here in the bay area. but that we as a public health community and our healthcare community are working hard together to make sure if and when this novel virus comes to the bay area but that we will be able to detect it early on and contain it. >> reporter: sfo is one of five airports in the country screening passengers for the virus. travelers who arrived from wuhan before the quarantine was put into place were contacted and checked for flulike symptoms associated with the coronavirus. at sfo, andrea nakano, kpix 5. we have just learned china is building a hospital dedicated to treating the virus. in the meantime, health officials are investigating two other potential cases in the us, in los angeles and texas. no confirmation yet that those patients actually have the virus. and the rest tonight indicates that terrified drivers for months. the chp says a suspect used marbles and a slingshot to target dozens of cars on highway 101. kpix 5's mike sanger is allowing 101, in prudential, where many of those attacks happened. >> reporter: residence in this area and commuters along highway 101 say there has been a year of stress and anxiety and they were glad it suspect is finally under arrest. it was on this stretch of highway 101 near prune dale in monterey county where many of the attacks occurred, with chp says it has investigated 69 incidents in all, going back to february of last year which injured at least five people. under arrest, 52-year-old charles ken lafferty. we believe mister lafferty used a slingshot with glass marbles to commit these crimes. in one incident last november, a school bus carrying members of the carmel high school football team to a game in san jose was hit along with a another nearby vehicle. the chp thinks lafferty used the slingshot while he was also at the wheel driving. mister lafferty was in possession of a weapon there was no indication at this point that a firearm was used in any of the 69 incidents? what was your reaction? >> that my daughter can be safe when she drives. >> reporter: residence like stephanie saavedra say these incidents have literally altered their lives. and their sense of safety. >> you made changes to your driving habits we don't go to monterey. >> reporter: the fact that he is off the street, is that good news? >> it is great news. >> reporter: the sense of relief here is obvious after months of worrying during every morning and evening commute or even a simple trip to the gas ration or a grocery store. >> it is definitely stressful. you think about well, man, what if it is a project i'll recent incident on january 5. as a result of that crime investigators were able to identify a gmc sonoma pickup which was linked back to the suspect. along highway 101 in prune dale, i am mark sayer, kpix 5. we are getting our first look at the three americans who lost their lives when their air tanker crashed while battling wildfires in australia. they were part of a crew based in northern california. kpix 5's racket in a cruise is in our newsroom with the very latest. >> reporter: the c-130 hercules crashed while on a mission to drop fire retardant in a ready part of the country's coastal mountains. all three men on board were killed. they include captain ian mcbeth of montana, first officer paul hudson of arizona, and flight engineer rick morgan of florida. the crash happened as fire conditions worsened with 900 heat and 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts. the three occupants on board, highly specialized, highly experienced. specifically trained, dedicated professionals to the ark, and large airplane, who did not survive. that awful crash. we simply don't know the circumstances pertaining to the accident at this stage. in the appropriate formal investigations and inquiries claims air safety regulators may have been cutting corners when they approved southwest's new flight to hawaii. according to the wall street journal and faa employee and a whistleblower, claimed that faa agency managers gave southwest preferential treatment by rushing the approval process for hawaiian flights. southwest told the wall street journal the airline went through the same stringent 14
