i mean slight, just a couple cars in the cash lane. it is quiet even with a bit of the backup. a nice ride out of the east bay into the city. east shore freeway not seeing any delays. all of our bay area bridges are quite. here is the golden gate bridge. easy right out of marin county. no delays. a great start on the san mateo bridge with traffic quite between 880 and 101. the u.s. launched a missile strike in baghdad killing one of iran's most powerful military leaders. kpix 5's jackie ward is in the studio with us this morning with what this means. the deadly drone strike was apparently in retaliation to attacks on the u.s. embassy in baghdad that happened earlier this week. general qasem soleimani was the leader of an elite guard. the pentagon said president trump directed the attack in a statement the department of defense says soleimani was developing plans to attack american diplomats and servicemembers in iraq and throughout the region. republicans like senator lindsey graham applauded the president's actions but democrats like senator the corey booker are questioning his actions. >> anytime a president uses military force in this matter there are standards which govern laws that guide the actions. so we still have a lot of questions that need to be answered with this use of military force and the quad consequences and what the appropriate consultations or involvement of congress was. >> president trump's only comment in the hours following the attack was a tweet of the american flag. the statement from the pentagon claims soleimani approved this week's protest at the u.s. embassy in baghdad prompting the military to deploy hundreds of trips to the middle east. house speaker nancy pelosi issued a statement saying, american leaders highest priorities is to protect american lives and interests. she goes on to say tonight airstrike risk provoking further escalation of violence and america and the world cannot afford to ha tensions escalate to the point of no return. we reached out to local city leaders across the bay area to see if they are making any security changes in response to the situation and are waiting to hear back. the rising tensions have u.s. stock futures tumbling this morning but crude oil prices are skyrocketing. tensions between iran and the u.s. have ramped up in recent months with to ron feeling the full weight of the trump administration's economic sanctions. and with the general staff, fueling the fire and political analyst -- >> this would be something like killing the secretary of defense in this country. it's a very sick advocate assassination. i don't know that iran will attack necessarily in retaliation for this but i think you can expect a -for-tat which is vean attempt to kill a significant political and military figure back. i'm anne makovec from the live news desk and let's go live to the scene of a water main break. this is in menlo park. you can see crews are working hard to try and repair this break right now. this is on pierce road in -- this could last 24 hours. the water is shut off. on pierce road between alpine avenue and menlo oaks drive, we're trying to get more information on exactly how the water main broke. but, at this point the main priority is to get it next. back to you. a woman is dead and a man in the hospital this morning after an attempted home invasion in alameda county. the shooting happened weda night arnd :30 on central parkway. dublin police say homes resident woke to his ex- girlfriend banging on his front door. when he opened it up he was confronted by her and a man who pointed a gun at him and charged inside. according to neighbors the resident moved in just a few days ago. >> we just heard a banging. it was pretty loud and i heard a bunch of yelling. >> uses own gun and he shot his way out of the residence and fled the area and called 911. >> when police got to the scene they found the ex-girlfriend dad just inside the door. the other man with the gun had also been shot but is expected to survive. the resident was not hurt and is not facing any charges. they fired his gun in self- defense. in oakland, friends say a man who pursued the thieves who stole his laptop computer died on his 34th birthday. the tragic sequence of events happened on new year's eve. at a starbucks in the montclair district. he suffered major injuries while chasing the thieves and later died at a hospital. friends say shuo zeng was planning a combination birthday/new year's eve party at his home. a candlelight vigil is reportedly being planned for sunday at the starbucks. our car break-in is especially heartbreaking for a high school basketball player among the items stolen is a jersey that belonged to his best friend and teammate who died in a car crash last summer. patent malarkey a branson high school says the crime happened as the car was parked outside at oakland restaurant. he had been wearing the jersey as a tribute to his late friend kwentyn wiggins. >> people love that jersey and my dad asked me to work this year for the jersey finish and senior year and it would be retired after that. >> the family says it does not plan to pursue charges as long as they get the jersey back. police are reporting a sharp drop in home burglaries. according to the san jose mercury news the rate fell by nearly 40% between 2014 and 2018. and the trend appears to have continued through 2019. police chief eddie garcia tells the paper that the department has been prioritizing problems and homeowners are helping by arming themselves with security cameras. meanwhile san francisco police are reporting a slight drop in car break-ins. they were down by about 3% in 2019 but still there were more than 23,000 of them. the city also saw its lowest number of homicides and more than half a century. 41 homicides is an 11% drop from 2018. in that year there were 46. looking at the airport, a suspected fuel leak force in oakland bound flight to land. the southwest jet was inbound from burbank with more than 140 people on board. the pilot selected to divert to winnetka international. it landed safely after 7:30. the search has been suspended for a car that plunged off a san mateo county cliff. dash cam video shows it careening off highway 1 near devil slide on monday. crews have been searching for the car and lake tahoe is facing a new lawsuit. back in october norstar officials announced they would begin charging fees at a major parking lot. the men suing the resort's owner say they had purchaser season passes before the new policy was announced and they should be exempt from the parking fees. the men are especially upset that northstar has no refund policy for season passes meaning they cannot get their money back. officials that the resort had no comment on the pending litigation. marin county is taking aim at speeding drivers. later this morning public works will begin installing five electronic speed signs along problem roads. they will not generate tickets but they will alert drivers about how fast they are going. the signs will be moved every three months. every time i see those say slow it is not that bad. here is a live look. traffic light. as you work your way out of the east bay into san francisco, a couple car stacked up in the cash lanes but easy conditions. no metering lights are nothing as you work your way across the bridge. your drive times reflect eight minutes is all it will take you to go from the maze to 101. all approaches to the bay bridge are very the travel. the east shore freeway is clear as well as 580 and 880 ride along the nimitz freeway. the rest of the bay area bridges are quiet as well. everything in the green. san mateo bridge no delays and the richmond-san rafael bridge looking pretty good this morning. let's get a live look at the golden gate. at the limit as you work your costs the span heading into san francisco and at the san mateo bridge, 880 towards 101 about 30 minutes for your commute. not a bad ride at all. if you're getting to the bridge you should be clear along 880. south on hayward all the way into fremont, north of here is a live look at the nimitz freeway near the coliseum. traffic is moving nicely in both directions. tail lights heading northbound into oakland this morning. travel times, no delays out of the altamont pass. i suspect things will be a little busier next week when everyone gets back to work in school. west bound 580, 22 minutes and that's it. east shore freeway 30 minutes from highway 4 to the maze and overview, the south bay looks pretty good. we are starting off the day with chilly temperatures. some spots in the 30s. livermore, santa rosa, upper 30s. bundle up if you're heading ridge of high pressure that will give way as we head through at least late tonight. and a weather system, you can see that rain for the pacific northwest, that will drop a weak cold front our way. we will be on the tail end of the spread so not expecting a lot of rain but i can show you what you will expect. taking you what you hour-by- hour you will see the sunshine as we head through the afternoon pick the clouds treatment tonight and for tomorrow morning late tonight and overnight into tomorrow morning here we are at 5 am tomorrow and some light showers for us. watch as the system moves out very quickly. it will move in and out and even by saturday in the afternoon catching some sunshine. looking at plenty of sun and cooler for sunday. just a little blip with that weather system pushing through late tonight and early tomorrow morning. picking up 107 -- maybe about a 10th of an inch for the north bay. but our snowpack, we are looking great for our sierra snowpack. looking at 77% of average. 90% in the central sierra and 104% for the south sierra. for month to date snowfall for that snowpack. we are looking at the chance of some more snow as we look ahead to the weekend. your tahoe reports while valley looking at packed powder with conditions there. sugar bowl machine groomed. and a chance of showers for this area over the weekend. here is what you can expect for today. looking at 60 in san francisco and oakland. 63 fremont, 65 in san jose and 61 for santa rosa. definitely on the mild side for sure as we head through the afternoon. for tomorrow in the morning we will have a few showers and then clearing quickly in the afternoon. plenty of sun, cooler sunday and the sunshine continues monday, tuesday and the chance of showers especially for the north bay on wednesday. the coachella valley music and arts festival 2020 line up is out. rage against the machine will headline friday night and travis scott on saturday and frank ocean on sundays during the two week festival. other scheduled to appear include calvin harris, lewis capaldi, bloom and lana delray. coachella takes place in indio on april 10 through the 12th and 17 through the 19. minor fender bender across the san mateo bridge. on the westbound side right admits span. it to the right shoulder so hopefully traffic is moving by ok. traffic really light anyway this morning. we have not seen a lot of problems on the freeways. just a bit of a backup at the cash lines on the bay bridge. easy conditions as you work your way out of east bay into san francisco. pretty much all of the bridges are pretty quiet. as you head into the city and the drive times are in the green. take a look at the damage freeway north and south bound. no delays. i'm anne makovec from the live news desk and let's go live right down to the scene of a water main break. this is in menlo park. crews have been working to repair this water main for the past several hours. it broke early this morning but they don't think they will have it done for 24 hours. there are a lot of homes affected in that area. this is on pierce road and ringwood avenue. the water is shut off right now all along pierce road between alpine avenue and menlo oaks drive. so the water to a lot of those people will be on before the 24 hour time, normally they can do a patchwork but we will keep you posted. international couple cars, about 10 to 15 deep, stacked up in the cash lines but right now things have dissipated. no metering lights and it all looks quiet as you head out of the east bay into san francisco. checking our travel times, 580, enjoy this while you can it's only 23 minutes to go from 205 to 680. no delays on east shore freeway, 14 minutes. highway 4 also looking pretty got on the westbound side out of any of. some slightly slower speeds as you commute off of 205, 580 connector into the ultimate. other than that free-flowing to get 880. a nice ride through walnut creek. >> that is
