now at 11, hundreds gathered to remember the young lives lost at the gilroy garlic festival. tonight, we are hearing from the family of the third in-year- old girl and a recent college graduate, both gunned down. >> whatever he called he would always say i love you, grandma. and i would always say i love you, trevor. >> no one thought this would ever happen. >> plus clues in the investigation which stretches and nevada and plus the gun seller who is apologizing. good evening. i am elizabeth cook. >> have a team coverage beginning with christin ayers who spoke with the family of one of thvictims.>> reporter: tonight, some of the victims of the shooting are here at santa clara valley medical center in varying stages of recovery, but one young victim, just 13 years old never made it to the hospital. her family told me she was hit by gunfire and died instantly. >> no one thought this could ever happen.>> reporter: she believes her niece was one of the gunman's first victim. one minute keyla salazar was enjoying a quiet moment with her mother, and sisters,. they were sitting down and eating ice cream resting in all of this happen. >> reporter: then, a barrage of gunfire suddenly. and the entire family was running for their lives. >> they started to run away and as they run away, she fell, but they thought she fell, but she was shot. >> reporter: they said her mom tried to reach her but couldn't get her daughter up and the girl's stepfather also tried but he was shot in the arm. police forced them all to evacuate and leave her behind. still, the family was convinced she would make it. >> we thought she was alive. we thought she was in surgery and we thought she would be taken care of, but at the hospital, we never thought she would be deceased. >> reporter: they found out the truth about seven hours after the shooting. she had been hit by gunfire and hit and died immediately. truck she didn't want to talk about the gunman. she said her niece would've turned 14 on saturday. now, she hopes her death the sparks change. >> whether or not we want to allow guns that powerful to be just given open to the public, you know, i think those are real conversations we should have a say community and to make sure there is no more victims and no more children to have to die. >> reporter:aunt described her as an animal lover who dreamed of working as an animator one day. she said a gofundme account has been set up in her name. six- year-old stephen romero was playing near kids bounce house when he was shot in the bullet went through him and into his mother's abdomen. his grandmother was also shot.'s uncle says he was a great kid. >> he was a very outgoing boy. very well mannered. he was very empathetic. he was a really good kid. he just turned six in june. >> the third victim was a recent crowd, college graduate, trevor irby. he was there with his fiancie at the festival, sarah warner, who survived. tonight, his grandmother said the two were inseparable. >> oh, god, she loved him. i mean, i think she actually worshiped the ground that kid walked on. i mean, she would do anything for him and he would do anything for her. and i just would always say when are you guys getting married. and oh grandma we have all kinds of time. >> tonight we show you how the community is coming together to mourn and heal. >> reporter: less than 24 hours after the mass shooting at the gilroy garlic festival, hundreds turned out tonight at two vigils to share in their pain and their strength. >> reporter: you can see the grief on the faces of so many in the crowd tonight who needed a lean on one another for support. and the plaza outside the town's library, they sang and had candles and had a moment of silence for the three victims, six-year-old, stephen romero, 13-year-old, keyla salazar, and 25-year-old trevor irby. >> the 25-year-old that passed away was right in front of me . and there was a lot of blood, and it was just very scary. >> reporter: the memories from yesterday's shooting still raw. >> i started running and just bullets were whizzing past my feet, and so i took cover behind a haystack and the shooter was maybe 15 feet from me, and he went down. >> reporter: patricia benson left early yesterday. she has been a volunteer at the festival since the very first one. >> my grandson is six years old. that really hit close to home when that little boy passed on. it is very tragic and we have lost our innocence but going strong. >> reporter: at st. mary's parish nearby, it was standing room only at another vigil for the community. >> this town is so beautiful. we have a lot of love and strength here. the gilroy garlic festival has always been something to and bring your family and friends from out of town and i know people who come from boston and cross country and know about it and it still doesn't make sense. >> we were known for the festival and now we are known for the shooting and ug reporte i have been here my whole life in gilroy and i will always show my love for the garlic festival. >> reporter: many community leaders and residents chanted gilroy strong tonight. many in the crowd vowing not to let the gunman define their town. in gilroy, betty yu, tran05 >> after the shooting, workers at the gilroy festival had a leave everything behind and get out. tonight, they are stuck in limbo of sorts anxious to go home. more than 30 of them whose vehicles and goods are still stuck in the crime scene are staying at a local red cross shelter tonight. >> so i am just waiting, hoping, afraid sort of to leave because i have to come back and deal with it and are they going to remember or are they going to confiscate the booth. >> things in product can be replaced. our loved ones and our family and friends, those are more precious. >> the red cross will keep that shoulder open until the fbi can return all of their property. the investigation into the shooter was and why did he do it. this stretches all the way to nevada and beyond. maria medina is in gilroy tonight were police are trying to learn why this nine teen- year-old did the unthinkable. maria? >> reporter: well, today, investigators called the crime scene extensive and complex in that it is several acres wide. what they still don't know is why the gunman opened flyer, fire in the first place.>> i think anybody wants to know why, the answer why. >> reporter: investigators worked around the clock trying to piece together what drove santino william legan to open fire at the gilroy garlic festival. he located the car not too far away and police say he parked on laurel drive and used to trail to walk a half-mile to the festival where he cut a hole in the fence. >> this event was completely fenced in. police officers as well as fbi agents were on the scene when the shooting occurred.>> reporter: three officers shot him in less than a minute that he fired an ak-47 style rifle at police and crowd. >> we are compiling a list today of all the different victims and locations.>> reporter: investigators from multiple agencies are trying to figure out if you randomly shot is victims are targeted them. on his since deleted instagram account, he says he is italian and iranian and in one post he mentions a book noted for its anti-semitic ideas and he goes on to say quote why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and silicon valley white expletive. >> authorities search the home in gilroy as well as a home in nevada he used days before the shooting. however, despite more details of the suspect emerging today, questions to remain. >> we have so many questions, and they won't be answered. the parents don't know the answers. so it is really sad.>> reporter: and, as you can see, the crime scene continues to be blocked off tonight. investigators say it will continue to be that way for several days.>> maria, police tell us this was an assault weapon. no question about it. how did a 19-year-old get his hands on this thing? do we know how we bought the gun? >> reporter: tonight we are learning the suspect actually bought the gun earlier this month on july 9 in nevada at mike's guns and ammo. we are hearing from the gun shop owner tonight. he is saying quote i did not know this individual. he ordered the rifle off my internet page. when i did see him, he was acting happy and showed no reasons for concern. i would never ever sell any firearm to anyone who a did wrong or looks associated with any bad group like white power. it is also important to note that he did buy it legally in nevada. however, that type of rifle his band here in california.>> you only have to be 18 to purchase that in nevada. all right. thank you, maria. tonight a 10-year-old girl is being called a hero for saving a three-year-old boy from the gunman. the boys parents, wendy towner and francis go aguilar was selling honey at a stand call the honey ladies. the gunman cut through the fence yards away from that stand. he opened fire on the two parents. a relative says they survived by playing dead. meanwhile, a woman who worked with them since her grandchild stepped into put tech to her bosses son.>> the little boy, my granddaughter was both in the tent at the same time. my granddaughter is 10 and grabbed him and put them under the box and said i saw his face, grandma. >> cheryl low says her bosses underwent surgery for their injuries. first responders acted quickly and were prepared for the worst. >> veronica de la cruz tells us how doctors and nurses know exactly what to do. >> reporter: the 911 calls came in seconds after shots rang out, but after a nationwide epidemic of mass shootings, first responders knew the drill. doctors say they have learned lessons from those tragedies and use technique from foreign battlefields to save lives in gilroy.>> we have learned the lessons we have learned from our military physicians as well as the shootings that of happen across the country. all of the tools that allow stopping compressible bleeding were used beautifully by our first responders. >> fear of mass italy says two bay area teenagers accused of killing a police officer in rome will remain in jail. and he says he is skeptical about their claim of self- defense. finnigan lee elder is from san francisco and his friend gabriel christian neftali jordan is from mill valley. and today, funeral was held for the 35-year-old officer who was stabbed to death on friday night. >> that service held at the church where that police officer just got married a few weeks ago. police say the two americans confessed after being identified on surveillance video. a clip circulating in italian media shows the teens on a street in rome. they allegedly stole a backpack after trying to buy drugs from an individual. later that night, they were confronted by police officers in plain clothes. newly released judicial documents say elder quote admitted to stabbing the officer because he was being strangled. however, the judge notes, there were no signs of strangulation. the other suspect says he did not realize that elder had a knife, but the judge is not buying it, concluding the weapon was just too big. a photo of natality york blindfolded at a police station led to some questions about his treatment and the validity of his confession. roams attorney general says the interrogation was free of duress. elders family said in a statement, quote we learn this morning that the authorities company is reporting a massive data breach tonight affecting more than 100 million people applying for credit. capital one says a hacker gained access to lots of personal information like na ads,credit oresaccount and social security numbers. but not credit card numbers. the accused hacker, a woman who used to be a software engineer, was arrested today in seattle. layoffs said uber
