times it's the fans doing the work. we'll explain. good evening, i'm alan martin. >> and i'm veronica de la cruz. a manhunt continues tonight. authorities believe the suspect in these images shot and killed a police officer early yesterday. in stanislaus county. kpix 5's joe vazquez is here with the latest. >> reporter: this story is developing minute by minute tonight. we are told by the sheriff department they have teams of police and fellow officers from other jurisdictions spread out trying to catch this cop killer and now they are asking folks to take a look at some images from social media to see if you can help. late this evening, stanislaus county sheriff's department confirmed these photos we found on facebook are photos of the suspect in a police shooting. you see the man posing in front of the golden gate bridge, his facebook profile says he lives in san francisco but he may have been living in the central valley. this is unusual, police are not naming the suspect even though they know who he is. they are putting his photos out to the public in hopes that people will recognize him and help catch him. he is accused of killing police corporal ron singh, 33 years old from the town of newman, during a traffic stop yesterday morning. the suspect immediately got away in a gray pickup truck which he dropped off. police have some leads but so far no arrests. >> you have to understand this is not supposed to happen here. >> reporter: it has been a very emotional couple of days for this small town in the central valley. officer singh. >> i've been to too many of these funerals. and i never thought ever that i would be doing it. >> reporter: his colleagues say corporal singh had an unbridled enthusiasm about police work. he worked for newman police since 2011 and he always talked about his family. he leaves behind a wife and a 5- month-old boy. singh was an immigrant from fiji. he entered the country lawfully. a sheriff says the suspect did not. >> this suspect is in our country illegally. he doesn't belong here. he's a criminal. >> reporter: the sheriff's department wants to catch this guy, they want the public's help, but he may have several aliases, so they are putting the photos out but they are not ready to name him, they say they have several leads, they've got the statewide manhunt underway but so far they've come up empty. >> joe, thanks for staying on it. president trump seized on the case earlier today tweeting, there is right now a full scale manhunt going on in california for an illegal immigrant accused of shooting and police chased christmas day was not tied to a double homicide but he says, however, the ending would have been the same. officers shot and killed the driver. kpix 5's maria medina live in san jose where a vigil was just held hours ago. maria? >> reporter: the police chief and jennifer vasquez's family divided on this issue, this is where vasquez took her last breath. but officers say she gave them no choice but to fire. the moment that ended jennifer vasquez's life caught on camera. and forever changed her family's life. >> she didn't deserve this. >> reporter: since the shooting christmas day, candles have burned for vasquez. at the spot where police say she lost control of her car, then tried desperately to free it from a fence before she allegedly rammed it into a patrol car as officers stood outside yelling at her to surrender. >> i'm saddened to be here this afternoon. >> reporter: san jose police chief eddie garcia defended the officer's who opened fire killing vasquez. passenger linda bueno survived. >> it was reasonable and justified for the officers to feel their lives were in danger. >> reporter: garcia called the shooting a tragedy and the moment the suspect's crossed paths with officers a coincidence. vasquez and bueno were in a white toyota camera in an area where two people had been shot. a witness pointed at vasquez's camry as the shooter. and when officers tried to pull her over, they say she instead led them on a high-speed chase for miles. that's when they also discovered the camry was actually stolen. >> i stop short of mistaken identity type of issue, they were not the suspect in the shooting, but also had they not been in a stolen vehicle, not lead officers on a pursuit, had they not tried to ram cars, we wouldn't be here today. >> reporter: the chief met with vasquez mother. >> support and defend the actions of my officers. >> reporter: his words were not enough for the grieving mother. >> she feels the way that it was dealt with, it wasn't right. >> we are demanding answers and we are demanding justice. she should be here celebrating the holidays with her family. and now she's not. >> reporter: and the police chief told us earlier that vasquez had led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen car before. she was just 24 years old. veronica? >> maria, obviously, police and family of vasquez don't see eye to eye. as to what happened here. what are they demanding tonight? >> reporter: yeah, there demanding several things. including an independent investigation as well as charges filed against those for officers who fired those shots against vasquez, those officers have been placed on routine administrative leave. >> maria medina live in san jose, thank you. a live look at san quentin where an inmate is missing after an apparent escape. tonight we are seeing the video from police would say the same inmate may have committed a carjacking a short time after he slipped out of prison. 21-year-old shalom mendoza was last seen 6:00 last night, part of a work crew in san quentin. 9:15, a carjacking was reported less than a mile away in the parking lot of a home depot. take a close look at the video, you can see it's highlighted there came a the man in the white shirt walks up to a woman about to get into an suv, san rafael police say he motioned as if he had a weapon under his shirt and then threatened to kill her. then he demanded the keys and drove away. >> the description given by the victim and what was provided by san quentin were almost identical so that was an investigative lead that we are currently following up on. as we speak. >> back out live, police found mendoza's jumpsuit near that carjacking site. they do consider him armed and dangerous and say anyone who sees him should keep their distance. mendoza was serving a five-year sentence for armed carjacking down in l.a. county. strong winds are rocking the bay area tonight, the national weather service issued a wind advisory warning of downed trees, power outages and rough waves. chief meteorologist paul deanno joins us with the latest. >> that wind advisory is for our higher elevations above 1,000 feet, even in control and no injuries have been reported. a mushroom grower could face tens of millions of dollars in fines for illegal dumping. a lawsuit from the santa clara district attorney claims monterey mushrooms pumped wastewater containing manure and toxic levels of ammonia from its facility into for sure creek. fisher flows into coyote creek, coyote creek flows into san francisco bay. the d.a. says the illegal dumping started in early 2016, and continued into the spring of 2017. the lawsuit says the company did it in order to save money. it seeks $67 million. we reached out to the company order to set up an exclusive bank, that would provide services only to the cannabis industry. a man is behind bars following a string of retail thefts in fairfield, police say the ulta beauty store in solano town center mall was robbed at least three times in the past three months. more than $35,000 worth of goods were stolen. this is one of the suspects, 40- year-old archibald crump. police say he is responsible for at least two of those thefts. krumpter was arrested yesterday at a home in san pablo while police also arrested 28-year- old tonya williams. during a search of the home, police found williams was in possession of an assault weapon and five large bags filled with marijuana for sale. the investigation into the retail theft is still ongoing. if you have any information, please call the police. police on the peninsula say they've broken up a sex trafficking scheme. they say carlos garcia of mountain view helped people come to the u.s. from guatemala. then he allegedly the throat of 18-year-old nia wilson as she stepped off a train at the macarthur bart station in july. prosecutors described the crime as a random act of violence. cal osha is investigating a transformer explosion in a word, it left a utility worker with burns. it happened about 10:15 last night on santa clara street. apg and d-lineman was in an elevated bucket troubleshooting a voltage problem when that transformer blew up. he suffered burns. he is now at santa clara valley medical center, no word on his condition tonight. cal osha working to determine what went wrong and whether any workplace safety rules were violated. were violated. a pair of sea lions are making it home just in time for the holidays. earlier this month, these sea lions were found in san luis obispo and monterey county, one was malnourished, the other had an infection. the care center has been nursing them back to health. today they were released back into the ocean. windy weather today but it had
