so-called day of rage. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning in california, tens of thousands of homes remain in jeopardy from a string of wind-driven destructive wildfires. two new fires have ignited. one burning through a retirement community near san diego. fire crews are now battling six major fires, making progress with some and not with others. the largest fire around ventura destroyed at least 130 buildings and covers 180 square miles. kenneth craig is in ventura. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. as you said the fires have brought hundreds of buildings to the ground. this single-family home reduced to nothing but rubble, all that's left, the shell of their minivan. hundreds of thoroughbred horses ran for their lives as the southern california wildfire spread even further south. this new blaze dubbed the lilac fire is in northern san diego county. volunteers trying to help save them saying several of the horses were killed. several others were badly injured. >> i caught a couple that were actually burned. >> reporter: the lilac fire 35 north of san diego grew six square miles in just a few hours. further north, the biggest of the blazes around ventura has grown to nearly 200 square miles. that fire has accounted for the bulk of at least 500 buildings destroyed so far. officials say even though the, hurricane-force winds that were predicted for thursday didn't quite materialize, the santa ana winds are still fanning the embers. >> that santa ana weakening is going to cause the fire to be much less predictable. it's going to move in different directions. >> reporter: here where the fire passed through, homeowners are being allowed back in to assess the damage, but for many, sadly, there's not much to see. this family of six returns to pretty much rubble. >> all of my little brother's stuff, that's where they've been growing up. >> reporter: every day the fire continues, air quality becomes more of an issue. so much so that hundreds more schools have been closed today. this is one of the hardest hit neighbors in ventura county. i think it's safe to say about half of the homes are no longer standing. one worker who was working here yesterday describes the neighborhood as a war zone, anne-marie. >> thank you, kenneth. this morning the first major snowstorm of the season is making its way from the southeast up to new england. winter storm warnings and advisories are posted from southern texas to south carolina. up to 3 inches of snow expected this morning in corpus christi. schools in austin are canceled today. chief meteorologist paul deanno of our san francisco station kpix has more on this first winter outbreak. >> there's a significant kink in the jet stream in the u.s. that's doing crazy things to our record. in alaska, an overnight low of 56 degree. that will by far overshadow a record. on the other side we have snow steadily falling in houston, texas, this morning, and that snow is going to be on the move as soon as 9:00 friday morning. atlanta and new orleans dealing with light to moderate snowfall. by this afternoon, washington, d.c., perhaps norfolk, virginia. charlotte, north carolina, dealing with snowfall, and by tomorrow morning it works its way up the eastern seaboard. boston, providence, new york city, philadelphia, and washington, d.c. perhaps the first widespread snowstorm of the season and this snow started in texas. i'm paul deanno for cbs news. the snow in texas is a rarity, but not so in buffalo, new york. some areas of western new york got over a foot and a half. today israeli forces are bracing for more violence in the wake of president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. on the gaza strip, palestinian protesters burned a picture of the president. vice president mike pence would not be welcome in the west bank during his visit to the region next month. minnesota governor mark dayton says he hasn't decided on a replacement for al franken. after serving more than eight years, franken has announced he's stepling do linlin linling allegations of sexual misconduct. he took a parting shot at president trump. >> some of the allegations against me simply are not true. others i remember very differently. >> reporter: if anything franken suggested he is the victim of a double standard. >> i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assaults sits in the oval office. >> reporter: like president trump, franken is accused of groping multiple women before he came to washington. >> i would have liked to have seen him take some responsibility, but the end result is the same. >> reporter: senator amy klobuchar is franken's minnesota colleague. >> did you think it was important for him to step down? >> i felt that given what was going on, that you had more and more allegations, that you had members calling for you to step down, that it was just going to be really difficult for him to do his job. >> reporter: the pair of resignation this week puts even more pressure on the gop and its alabama senate candidate roy moore. >> the man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls -- >> reporter: many senate republicans disavowed moore again. >> i wish he were not the nominee. >> nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. and republican congressman trent franks says he's resigning next month after two female staffers say he discussed surrogacy with them. he said he never physically or intentionally contacted them. frank and his wife have children through surrogacy. the ethics committee had opened an investigation after the accusations. he said he would be unable to get a fair hearing. congress passed a stopgap bill averting a government shutdown bill. first the house and then the senate passed the measure yesterday that keeps the government financially afloat until december 22nd. also yesterday president trump held budget talks with top congressional leaders. democrats say there won't be a deal unless there are protections for drooerms, children brought to the u.s. illegally as children. and ahead on "cbs this morning," we will discuss the budget negotiations with republican south dakota senator john thune. it's still unclear why a gunman opened fire at a new mexico high school, killing two students. the shooter is also dead, but it's not known if he took his own life or was killed by the police. as tech is a small town near the colorado border. students at as tech high say they heard the gunshots and took cover. barry petersen reports. >> reporter: it's a scene that's become all too familiar, students barricading themselves behind locked doors as a shooter opens fire. as tech high school was a school in the cross hairs. and they knew what to do. this is a student at the high school. >> i could feel it vibrating and then it stopped and we -- we -- when we evacuated out of our room, there was a dead body outside our room, and we were told that it was probably the shooter that shot himself outside our door. >> reporter: some parents reported hearing from their children via text messages that they could hear the shooter approaching. erin jeune is a parent. >> you feel like anymore you're not safe anywhere. >> reporter: the high school was cordoned off as police cleared the campus and teens were reunited with their parents. chief mike neal runs the aztech police department. chief neal was one of those heroes. when he arrived the school was on lockdown, the doors locked, so he and his men busted through the glass to get in and resolve the situation. barry petersen, cbs news, aztec, new mexico. michael pfleger, the former south carolina police officer who fatally shot walter scott, an unarmed black man, gets 20 years behind bars. in exchange prosecutors dropped state murder charges. pfleger is one of the few police rights museum. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. mississippi's "clarion-ledger" reports john lewis is skipping tomorrow's opening of the civil rights museum because president trump will be there. he said it's intolerable that the president will attend. he said he should cancel his visit because of his divisive record on civil rights issues. "the tampa bay times" reports that the parents of the son accused in the tampa shootings are refusing to answer. investigator's question. he's accused of killing four people in apparently random attacks. his parents' attorney said they're not going to answer questions that could lead to their son's execution. they're going to be brought back in next month to see if they should be held in contempt of court. the "washington post" reports that members of congress are casting uncertainty about the u.s. competing in the south korea winter olympics. yesterday white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders said no official decision has been made. later she tweeted the u.s. looks forward to participating in the winter olympics. later u.n. ambassador nikki haley said it was an open question whether they would compete. and ed sheeran received a high honor from prince charles of the buckingham palace. the grammy winner became a member of the most excellent order of the british downroller-coaster ride. it surged above $19,000 yesterday. here on wall street, the dow gained 70 points. the s&p 500 rose 7 points. the nasdaq ended the day 36 points higher. 12,000 jobs are on the chopping block at general election tick. g.e. said alternative energy is crimping the call for energy fuel. >> and anheuser-busch ordered 40 of tesla's new electronic trucks. the budweiser brewery wants to reduce its carbon emissions by 2025. the trucks will be available by 2019. one has a range of 300 miles. the other can drive 500 miles without being recharged. and, anne-marie, you're never broke out in southern california. one near san diego burned 20 homes and killed 30 racehorses at a training facility. in all, tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate. the largest fire in ventura has destroyed 430 buildings. as americans finalize holiday travel plans, terrorists overseas are working to build sophisticated laptop bombs that can be smuggled onto planes. debora patta traveled to somalia where a travel jet nearly blew up last year. >> reporter: in this cvtv footage you can see a man walking with a laptop. you can see him slip it to the man at the coffee shop. the man was ahead of airport security at the time. the laptop exploded shortly after takeoff and blew a hole in the side of the plane. only the bomber was killed. but islamic militants of al shabab continue to try to per forever the laptop bomb. in fact, they tried to plant the bomb a day earlier, but the flight was canceled. in the past 18 months, three other computer bombs were found after one partially exploded in a cargo hold. new multi-layered security checks including dogs trained to sniff out explosives are supposed to stop that, but al shabaab still has people on the inside. said eliye, head of security. >> the biggest problem we have no matter who it is, airport manager, everybody has to follow. >> reporter: the militants operate freely in this crumbling city of mogadishu. we have been repeatedly told that they have eyes and ears everywhere, that they blend easily into local communities. a quiet street like this may not look menacing, but it can turn nasty in an instant. a truck bomb in october killed 500 people and injured hundreds more. according to intelligence sources, the bomb went off early. it was meant to hit the airport. the u.s. embassy is right next door. a senior intelligence source tells us all shah baub now appears to have international support. the bomb was boarded in angola and the flight was bound for india where the bomber had a visa and prepaid
