Jaclyn. Good morning. We just saw some yellow sensors disappear from our maps here. So looks like caltrans is wrapping up with overnight roadwork along 280 in the new york direction. Thats at hillcrest. So heads up if you travel there. 12 minutes from the maze to 101. Developing now, a suspect from the bay area is in custody for a deadly crime spree. Authorities say this Deputy Robert french died in the shootout. The crime spree spread all across sacramento but it started at a ramada inn. As andria borba reports, the suspect was reportedly involved in a stolen car ring. Reporter hours after a shootout that left a deputy dead and two chp officers injured, the blinking lights from patrol cars remain at the ramada inn in sacramento. A countywide car Theft Task Force spotted a stolen car in the Hotel Parking lot. Officers chased the car and the two women inside to elk grove and arrested them. One of the women was on probation. So officers moved in to search their room at the ramada inn. The two chp officers knocked on the second floor door and identified themselves. When a suspect inside began to fire shots through the door and the wall. Reporter both chp officers were hit. The suspect tried to head out of the back of the hotel room. Sacramento county sheriffs deputies were waiting there. The suspect went to the back balcony of the room, exited with a highpowered rifle with a large capacity magazine and began to engage our deputies in the back. Reporter thats when 21 veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department Robert French was shot in the side a bullet that wound up in his chest killing him. The suspect, although, wasnt done. He jumped off the second story balcony and made it into another car leading officers on a chase that ended at el camino and sultan with more gunfire. The suspect was arrested and now deputies are dealing with the grief of losing a man who trained over 100 other deputies during his career. Its going to be time for them to process now that one of theirs was injured or one of theirs was killed. It brings back the reality that nothing that we do on a dayto day basis is routine. Reporter andria borba, kpix 5. The suspect was taken to Sacramento County hospital in critical condition. A major new problem near houston. Several explosions were heard at a Chemical Plant in crosby this morning. Workers and residents who live within about two miles of the plant had evacuated the area already. Flooding from harvey knocked out refrigeration and backup generators inside. At least 21 people went to the hospital after inhaling fumes. But they should have no long term problems. Gas prices are going up after harvey forced the nations biggest refinery to shut down yesterday. Experts say that the u. S. Has lost more thanonefifth of its Refining Capacity as a result of the storm. It could be days or weeks before it returns to normal. Nationwide gas prices run 7 cents in the last week. The rains in texas are letting up but for some east of houston its dangerous. Don champion has the latest. Reporter dramatic rescues taking place across Southeast Texas as the deadly aftermath of harvey continues to cause widespread devastation. The military, part of that rescue effort, airlifting families to safety above floodwaters. More help is on the way. Two naval ships carrying nearly 700 marines and even Water Purification systems poised to offer help to the state, local and citizen crews. Helping people in need in their greatest moment of need when air most vulnerable, its nice to know that somebody is going to come out there and help you. Reporter two areas in dire need of help this morning, beaumont and port arthur. Dozens of seniors are stranded in the nursing home before helping could arrive. In beaumont, texas, the city lost its water supply after pumps failed. The worst isnt over for Southeast Texas as far as the rain is concerned. Reporter in houston, thousands spent the night in shelters. But many there are still in need of rescue. Basically, the water was rising, time to go. So thats what we did. Reporter Vice President mike pence visits the storm ravaged region today and will make stops in and around corpus christi. Their courage and devotion to save countless lives, it represents the best of america. Countless pets have been rescued in the area and shelters all over the country are pitching in to help them out. Shelters in seattle, chicago, Colorado Springs and other cities have welcomed dogs and cats who are separated from their owners in texas. There are still many people in need of help. The good news, somewhat, was that the sun actually came out in houston. So it gave people hope. Storm system now moved way from houston towards louisiana and heading towards the Mississippi Valley. So lets take a look now and show you where harvey is. Still bringing down a significant amount of rain. Those areas of yellow and green. As you see its moved off houston further east. But now its louisianas turn. So heres the futurecast. You can get an idea of where its going. So this storm is heading towards the Mississippi Valley moving towards tennessee, atlanta, and its really going to continue on through saturday as it turns into this low pressure system thats going to further head northnortheast. But at least for houston it gives them a chance to let those floodwaters recede. Lets look out west. Heres what were dealing with. Heat alerts from san diego to seattle, this whole area of the west coast under warnings, watches and advisories. For us, we are seeing a heat advisory beginning today. But tomorrow, saturday, we are talking recordbreaking heat. This will be the hottest couple of days of the year with temperatures well into the triple digits. Today even going to beat records especially in concord. Look at this. Today, the report breaker was 98 degrees in 2005. Today expected to reach 103 degrees. Thats not even the worst of it. Get ready for friday, saturday. Things are going to be significantly hotter, dangerous weather conditions actually. Even along the coast, were talking 80s, 90s. So most of the time you head to the coast its in the 70s when the inland temperatures are in the triple digits but not even getting a break along the coast. We are also going to see some thunderstorms come sunday into monday. So the heat is going to last for several days and then top that off with some lightning and that could be very dangerous. Thats why we have red flag warning in effect now for areas above 1,000 feet elevation. Its going to be very dry. More than a dozen people are facing charges after a gang bust in the east bay. Investigators say the suspects are part of a gang known as swerve team. The group has been linked to several Violent Crimes including freeway shootings and three homicides. The investigation started last year after Surveillance Video surfaced from a home in fremont. In texas recognized one of the offenders and thought it was odd that someone would be committing serious crimes in fremont. Police are still looking for one suspect. All the others have been given bail of 24 million each. In the north bay authorities are looking for a young woman accused of walking into a Senior Housing complex and stabbing a man. The 66yearold man was stabbed multiple times Tuesday Morning in the west end neighborhood in san rafael. Now police are looking for 26 yearold unique gaines. She was checked in as a visitor. Gaines was last seen on a golden gate transit bus that morning and got off at the el cerrito del norte bart station according to police. They said she dangerous and urge people to call 980 if they see her. At an invite only gathering of Small Business owner, President Trump promised to bring back main street. A kpix 5 investigation revealed that he failed to report Athletic Director and soccer so much bob gamino, 30 students in a year have accused him of sexual assault. In response to that failure to report that teacher he was sent to everett middle school. Parents received an email yesterday notifying them he wont return to the middle school. Parents want to know why alvarado was there to begin with. Do you think he should have ever been moved here . If he was questioned by oconnell, why would he still be in the Public School system at all . The district says that alvarado still works for them but will not return to the school. They gathered in sacramento yesterday. They want lawmakers to pass a series of bills and new fees for more affordable housing. One of the bills would ask voters to approve a 4 billion bond. The money would help to build housing for the homeless, seniors and veterans. Working families living in their cars, we have a crisis. Until the dynamic at the local government level is changed and they become more accommodating to housing, we will fall short of what we need for working class people to afford a home. Governor jerry brown still has to sign off on the bond proposal. If he does, it could be on next years ballot. Water rides could be a reason to visit gilroy. They hope to break ground on the western edge of the city. Maria medina shows us why some parents are skeptical about the project. Reporter after looking at other cities, great wolf decided to enter negotiations with gilroy for 60 days to see if theres a potential to strike a deal. It it would be adjacent to the gilroy gardens theme park off highway 152 with 700 family suites, shops and restaurants. Great wolf says it would create hundreds of jobs and make money for the city through taxes. The company says its reaching out to the community now for feedback. I want to go there. Reporter we had more questions about the plans but a city worker said as part of the negotiation agreement they cant talk about it. San francisco neighborhoods could be getting a facelift to keep cyclists and pedestrians safe. The focus is on taylor street. The upgrades include wider sidewalks with greenery and bike lanes.
