The cuts led to hundreds of officers quitting or transferring to higher paying jobs in other cities and police, and fire unions fought back. Giving officers an 8 pay hike for a 5 Retention Bonus for current, and returning officers. For a department from 1400 to 951 officers, the deal couldnt tie experience to come back. Now, youre going to get a competitive retirement package and weve gotten a great start on competitive wages. Its going to be a tremendous shot in the arm. The mayor admits the agreement isnt bulletproof because it was approved by 70 of voters, a taxpayer could challenge the deal. Former mayor chuck reid was the hard liner before pension reform.
