anti-vaccine beliefs, so he can't take the court. why instagram for kids is getting sidelined. good evening, this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. the warriors are on a slippery slope filled with politics and racial undertones here. it also has to do with basketball. one of their top players, andrew wiggins, has refused to get the covid shot. the nba has rejected his request for a religious exemption. bottom line, he cannot play in san francisco under current san francisco guidelines. today the warriors head their annual media day. it was supposed to be all smiles, a lighthearted session, not this time. wiggins, the drama continued and dominated the conversation. here he was posing for photos. in the past, he had said he would only get the vaccination if he was forced to, even with the possibility of missing all home games, he wouldn't say if he plans to get the shot. >> it's none of your business, that's what it comes down to. back is definitely against the wall. but i'm just going to keep fighting for what i believe. >> everybody has access, especially in this environment, you have access to the experts and people that are, you know, analyzing and studying and researching this thing every single day. and hopefully, you know, you tap into that, and, again t's about making a decision that you understand the consequences on both sides and that's kind of where you leave it. >> we're hopeful that it all is resolved you know, over the next couple of weeks, but we're going into camp tomorrow with, with a plan to have everybody out on the floor and ready to roll. >> some delicate responses there from the warriors. so what now? not just andrew wiggins, but a handful of other nba stars who are refusing to get vaccinated. let's bring in our warriors insider, monte pool. we bring you in because the perspective and the relationships you have with these players, this story isn't just about the warriors, it really cuts deep into the black community as well. what's at stake here. tell us what we don't know. >> well, you know, there is a lot of misinformation in every community, actually, and some of the black players, going back to historical context, the years when the government used specific vaccines and used black people as guinea pigs. that is an issue in the back of some of these players' minds, now it's a lot different in that the vaccine has been taken in the majority of the population of all races and all colors. at this point, with the warriors, it just appears that they're frustrated. there's no question about that. but they're trying to respect his personal space while also at the same time, hoping that he gets the vaccine. they've done their part. it's up to him to make a decision whether he wants to do it or not. and so far today, he is under the harshest of spotlights maybe in his entire career, but today he held firm and said nope. there's no indication that he's willing to do that yet. the words are hopeful but no indication yet. >> you've spent some time with the players and wiggins, what's his story? you've gotten to know him the last couple years. >> he's a good family guy by all accounts. played in minnesota for most of his career. actually canadian, his dad played in the nba. he hopes to rejuvenate his career. there are a lot of questions about how he could be in minnesota. >> last year he had a terrific year. if he can't play, if, for every game he misses, you're talking about missing more than $350,000 in pretax cash. so that's one factor. the other factor is he's a starter on their team. if he's not playing at home, there's a hole to fill, and it's going to hurt the warriors, he knows that. the question is, what's he going to do about it. >> this was very interesting regarding black players in the nba who don't get vaccinated. kareem abdul jabar saying they are failing to live up to it. >> i am optimistic come the first game here at chase we'll have a full compliment of team as far as who's healthy and who isn't. >> that's bob myers, we'll get back to him in a minute. let's get back to kareem abdul jabar. saying they are failing to live up to the responsibilities that come with celebrity. athletes are under no obligation to be spokespersons for the government but this is a matter of public health. this seems a little unfair racial pressure on one person, andrew wiggins here. >> you know, i don't sense that it's a racial pressure on andrew. i think it's team pressure, because, again, the vast majority of people who are not getting vaccinated are people who don't understand the science, don't want to understand the science, and they don't seem to realize if they get sick they have to trust the science because they end up in the hospital. the question is, what are you going to do right now, whether you're black or white, to deal with this. in the case of andrew wiggins, maybe being black is a factor, but he hasn't said that. but there is an obligation to your kmurnts, to your team. if you want to criticize andrew wiggins, i understand. it's a personal decision, but it impacts a lot people, anybody comes into your space. >> does he know something we don't? >> he's hopeful. they have a hard time believing this guy's going to forfeit half of his salary. he has to be fully vaccinated by october 13th, according to the city of san francisco. that means he has a day or two to get the one-shot j&j and can be cleared. if he takes any other vaccine he won't be clear until november. the question is whether he plans to do it at all. the sooner he does it, if he does it, the better the warriors are. as long as he holds out, that's really going to hurt this team. >> do iguodala and the veteran members pull him aside and have a conversation with him? >> that's clear. but they've done a lot to persuade him to go down this road to get vaccinated. so far he has resisted at every step of the way. they're hoping at some point he'll say, okay, i'll take one for the team, realizing it will help more than just the team. >> monte poole, from nbc sports bay area. our question of the day, what do you think about andrew wiggins. we got a lot of responses. cheryl perez says we all make choices. not all personally advantageous but a choice nonetheless. roman says, home games? he shouldn't be allowed to play in any games unless he gets vaccinated. another big story this evening, instagram is backtracking. the plan to develop an instagram for kids app is on hold. facebook, which owns instagram says a plan to make an alternate version for 10-12 year olds has been sidelined. the company reacting to criticism from parents. a "wall street journal" report shows that they knew was causing harm to the emotional help to teenage girls. >> if anybody leaves feeling worse about themselves, that's an issue we need to take seriously and figure out how to address. >> my concern is this will draw a new wave of very young kids. >> i have a tween at home. i speak for so many parents. this was a bad idea. my first gut reaction is no, i don't want a specific app for their age group. >> i have a teen at home. i know what it's like to deal with instagram. that's why there was so much blow back. people with tweens hear from people with teens and say they're not ready for that. >> i appreciate instagram coming out today, but how do they get to this level where they have to go on the "today" show and we're squashing this. >> backlash. even with them admitting it knows teenage girls are often hurt by what they see and the bullying that comes on instagram. so the idea, even if it's a thoughtful idea, it seems like it's a good idea, but it's read as, you're just letting more young people go to where the teenagers go, and that's a dangerous area. >> does this come across as tone deaf for instagram? or can they bounce back? there's so much money for instagram and facebook here. >> i think it's a little bit of both. the timing is bad, but they can bounce back. facebook has proven it can't get out of its way with scandal. investors don't mind, users don't mind, they still pile in. >> by the way, you can find us on instagram. nbc bay area, we're posting our updates, sharing reporters' stories and giving you behind the scenes look at coverage. our handle @nbcbayarea. up next, trapped in a burning car on the side of 101. an incredible story. the rookie cop who made a life-saving rescue. have you gotten yours yet?
