Making sure that we have equipment and supplies and just making sure that our protocols are in place to keep our patients safe as well as our Health Care Workers. Reporter dr. Sam shen is an emergency medicine doctor at Stanford Health cares palo alto campus and tells me he thinks the team and the hospital are ready to face a surge in covid patients. Should we hit a surge scenario, you know, we have prepared different backup plans. We have a scenario to manage surges and then we have a scenario to manage a disaster. Reporter dr. Shen and betty young with Santa Clara Countys covid19 Response Teams say their organizations feel much better prepared to deal with the possible surge now because of what theyve learned during the first two waves of the virus. You may remember in the spring when Santa Clara County turned the Convention Center into an Emergency Hospital just in case. And betty says they are capable of doing it again, if needed. Weve been here. We know we have plans in place for response. We have resources. Were able to stand these Emergency Operation centers up quickly should the need arise. Reporter Health Experts say the best way to prevent a potential twindemic is simple, continue wearing a mask and follow social distancing guidelines and get a flu shot. Santa clara county says its seeing a much higher demand for a flu shot this year than last, so make a plan at places like the Santa Clara County fair grounds where you can get one for free. As of last week, we were at more than 7,000 flu vaccinations administered. As of the end of october. And thats three times the number that we would typically have around this time. With covid cases surging across the state, 18 counties including santa clara and napa counties could be moved back to a more restricted tier as of next week. In the south bay some restaurants are already preparing for the likelihood that Indoor Dining will once again be shut down. In san jose, the owner of jack holders restaurant just bought ten patio heaters so he can hopefully continue to attract outdoor diners as the weather gets colder. I think for restaurants its going to be a little disappointing, but at the same time, we have to be prepared for whatevers going to hit us next. Were noticing now the trend is for these counties to pull back. Clare county saw the surge pick up over the weekend with more than 350 new cases reported on sunday. Hospitalizations also up. To help slow the spread, the county has been stepping up its enforcement efforts. The county Health Director is urging everyone to skip large gatherings for the holidays. The state has said its possible that half of california counties will need to revert to a stricter tier within a few weeks. Now lets take a closer look at the surge specifically in the bay area. This map color coats each county base on the number of new cases over the past two weeks. Marin county is the lightest color yellow. That has the smallest number of cases. Less than 71 per 100,000 people. Now, most of the bay area is in this medium orange color. That is the peninsula, the east bay, the south bay. Each county averaging about 110 new cases, but take a look at the north bay. Sonoma, napa and solano counties, theyre in the dark sh reds. Napa the most you see here. Those three counties each have more than 200 new cases per 100,000 people. Of course well continue to keep our eye on these numbers as the state heads into winter. In the east bay one food bank is sounds the alarm. Not only is it short on volunteers, but its short on food. Here is nbc bay areas melissa colorado. Reporter with the holidays just around the county, the Alameda County food bank is preparing to feed even more struggling families. The problem is theyre doing more with less. The emergency coronavirus food they were receiving from the usda stopped coming. In september and october we had usda boxes, which were bigger than these. They had they were heavy. They had a gallon of milk, usually some frozen meat. Reporter retiree matthew spent his wednesday morning loading up hundreds of strangers trucks with boxes of feed. Like this family, mark from san leandro. Can put together onepot stew usually out of whatever they got. Reporter his neighbor pablo always comes along. Onions. Reporter every little bit helps when youre one of eight. Its a pretty big family. A bunch of kids. I think if i was trying to live off it, id be pretty hungry. Reporter over the county, the Alameda CountyCommunity Food bank says those boxes were stuffed with pounds of food from the federal coronavirus Food Assistance program. We were getting six truck loads a week for this program in july. But starting in november, the program is not available to food banks in the bay area because there arent any vendors for us. Reporter we reached out to the usda and are still waiting to hear back. In the meantime, the food bank is filling the gap by spending millions of their own money on food. The only way were able to do this work is by getting donations. Right now we can fill the gaps, but we need continuous support. During the holidays, you know, i know people are hurting. First it was pfizer, now there is some positive news about the Covid Vaccine moderna is working on. During a News Conference today, dr. Fauci says moderna will have phase iii results within a week. Moderna vaccine is similar to pfizers and dr. Fauci said he is optimistic data from an early trial will reveal early similar success. Despite the pandemic, the facility held its annual veterans day simone, only now with masks and social distancing. In the Service Reporter its audience a living history book of another time. And just an account, a real firsthand account of history during that timeframe is just an irreplaceable moment. Reporter many of these veterans traded irreplaceable years serving their country. So thats some good news, especially for those of you in marin, napa and sonoma counties where we had some 20s and 30s this week. We are starting to see those temperatures, that cold beginning to fade. Lets bring in the microclimate forecast and take a look at my weather dashboard here. I did want to start off tonight with a look at those cold temperatures and the morning lows and the trend that were going to be seeing as we head throughout the next ten days. I think youll be happy with this to not be getting down into the 20s and low 30s. It will stay cool, but youll see as we head through friday, were down into the upper 30s and 40s for morning lows returning saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday of next week. Then for the following weekend we would start to see some colder 30s beginning to move back in. Now, daytime highs will remain cool for tomorrow. Its going to stay pretty much the same no matter where you head across the bay area. Because weve had these backtoback weaker systems moving over and theyve all had cold air with it. So its not really letting our microclimates kind of edge in there. So temperatures overall pretty consistent here. Santa rosa at 61. Livermore, 63. Down to san jose, 61. And palo alto, there you go, similar temperatures, also at 61 degrees. Well have some cloud cover lingering tomorrow, but were going to hold off on the rain chances until friday. Let me go ahead and give you a look at the rain chances. What youll see is as i mentioned tomorrow well have the clouds with us. Not expecting any rain on thursday with this revised forecast. Looking to see that high cloud cover lingering through the afternoon. Then as we roll through friday, notice the storm system beginning to develop here off to the north .
