We should note though, the dish, right there on the stanford campus, has been closed, during our shelter at home. A big announcement from Governor Newsom. The state could be days, not weeks away from moving into phase two of the shelter in place order. That would allow some retail and hospitality businesses to be open. Including some restaurants. The governor said with strict physical distancing measures in place, of course, the office has a team of experts looking into what the new team of guidelines would look like for each industry and the announcement gives hope to many yearning to get back to work. If we can hold the line and do good work, and just avoid the temptation, to get back and congregation, with people, congregate with people, in ways that we can see an increase in the spread, we will get there much sooner than many people perhaps think. California has had one of the strictest stayathome orders in the country, but Governor Newsom said the states early action has paid off. Well, this is not one size fits all. Different states, different policies. Almost half of our country is reopening. The states that you see here in dark green, this is the dark green states there, they have partially reopened. The states in light green, right there, in the midwest, and even down in florida there, will reopen soon. In all, the green, dark and light green, is about 24 states. We have an update now on the ucsf doctors and nurses who went to other parts of the country to help with the overflow of covid19 patients. We were at sfo, just last week, when this team of 21 left for the nav hoe nation in new mexico. They have since treated hundreds of patients. One of those volunteers tells us about what its like to be on the front lines there. Our Jessica Aguirre joins us with more. Jessica . Reporter well, raj and janelle, that ucsf team of doctors and nurses has been at the Navajo Nation now for nine days. They have been in that hot zone, really treating all of those very ill patients. They also met with the president of the Navajo Nation, and thats what youre looking at right now, photos from that meeting. And leading that team of doctors is dr. Shriham, the cofounder of heal, which is a group that works with the Navajo Nation of doctors and medical professionals. So thank you for joining us, i know youre in arizona. Doctor, tell me your First Impressions when you got there, on what the greatest need was, for the people of the Navajo Nation. Sure. So like you said, we arrived last wednesday, on april 22, and i think what has been incredible to watch is the navajo resilience and resourcefulness, and taking over caf tear yas and making their own ppe, when the federal response hasnt been there. It is incredible. The navajo leadership, we have been taking care of patients, unsheltered patients, 125 of them, across four hotels in gallup, new mexico and the Navajo Nation has done an amazing job getting all of those patients into hotels the last few weeks. And then i think a lot of the facilities that were in, theyre seeing a tremendous amount of covid cases and youre really seeing this clinical hustle from our navajo colleagues that have been facing this for the last several weeks, and now even in the last two weeks, the surge is really upon us. So as we saw, a little bit of leveling here, in the bay area, thats when you guys left over there, why was it that the Navajo Nation was so badly impacted and why theyve had struck such a strong surge . Is it the lack of medical infrastructure, is it the close proximity, in which the nation lives, because of the culture, or what did you find . I think this is a part of this story of racism in the United States, that covid19 has really laid bare. For example, in michigan, we know that black folks only make up 14 of the population but are 40 of the deaths, and in chicago, black people make up 30 of the population, but are 56 of the deaths, and in new mexico, native americans make up 11 of the population, but are a third of the covid cases. And so native americans in the United States have been victims of underfunded health systems, understaffed health system, long before covid, and you know, for example, the Indian Health service is only funded a third of what the v. A. Or medicare is funded per capita, and then of course, the things that you mentioned are also true, where this incredible expansive definition of family, where several generations live in close proximity, to poverty, the chronic disease, its all part of the story. But really, its complex. Yes, thank you so much, we appreciate your expertise, and obviously, the efforts that you and your team are making there. Thank you so much. And raj and janelle, shoe know that another team of ucsf doctors lalso travelled to new york to help out there as well. So our medical team here, spreading out throughout the country to help people. Its amazing what theyre doing. Thank you, jessica. Those places definitely need the help. Still to come, bucking the order. Another business opens its doors while restrictions are still in place. Were going to check in with how its going so far. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri enjoying that sunshine right now. But ill tell you about some cooler cloudier changes, coming this weekend, and what we could have some drizzle. Coming up in about seven minutes. We have new photos that appear to show kim jongun, the north korean dictator hasnt been seen in public in three weeks, north korean staterun needa releasing these photos they show kim jongun at a ribboncutting ceremony for a new fertilizer factory. Questions were raised about his health, when he missed his late grandfathers public Birthday Celebration on april 15th. Big news developing in washington, d. C. At this hour. Nbc news has learned the Trump Administration is blocking dr. Anthony fauci from testifying before a House Committee which is investigating the coronavirus response. Meanwhile, the fda has granted emergency use status for a bay area drug company. That designation expands doctors ability to use foster citybased gilead remdesivir on hospitalized patients with the most severe cases. Earlier this week, a large study showed patients who received the medicine from Gilead Sciences were discharged four days earlier than those given the placebo. The companys ceo met with the president today, in the oval office. We saw the incredible human need, and we said in the event that this is successful, we have to plan for success and thats just the way we operate. Im proud to work for a company that takes such a decision. Gilead is donating its entire current supply of the drug, enough to treat 140,000 patients. It plans to manufacture a million treatments by the end of this year. The owner of a vacaville barbershop reopened his doors this morning despite the risk of a citation. The shutdown order he believes is unamerican and unconstitutional and expects to be cited by the police but in the meantime, he is going to work. The mayor and other barbers who work in the shop were booked solid today. The mayor says not only are the barbers trained in sanitation, but he provides an essential service and his customers seem to agree. Were experts in sanitation. This is a very, very clean industry. Barbers are essential. Cosmetologists are essential. Everybody has their marches on. I think were doing okay with that. Every persons bills are essential. And you have to pay bills. So i support them. And thats why im here. The barbers are wearing gloves an marches marches and cleaning between commerce and no one is allowed to wait inside. Sheltering at home has meant more time with pets but those who dont have one, its still possible. Yes, sjessica is rejoining u a puppy from a shelter. Let me get it straight. We can have a puppy but not really have a puppy, is that right . Sort of. During the shelter at home, all of us as humans have been using zoom to kind of connect with our friends. Well, it turns out our fourlegged friends can use zoom, too. To connect with kids. And connect with people that maybe isolating in homes, or in, so they can help the elderly. The Humane Society in pleasanton has taken the canine program virtual. They have certified handlers that go to schools so the kids can learn to read and read outloud and then go to assisted living facilities and Retirement Homes but obviously, were sheltering at home, and it is out of the question. So valley humane is using zoom calls, where people are isolated and with hospital patients that are isolated, where kids that really need to read outloud. Our handlers can coordinate zoom calls with Elementary Schools and libraries that we already have a relationship with, and teachers can coordinate niece oneonone reading sessions with young children. Where essentially, the camera goes right to the dog, and the child reads outloud to the dog. And the dog reacts. Now, if you cant do a live call, dont worry. If you go to valley Humane Society web site, they actually have like in their new channel, you can look up on your ipad a dog to talk to, or to read to. So that is all free. The other thing that is happening, they have all of these animals that are are out on foster care, they are running out of pet food and they are asking to go on the web site and potentially make a donation, so that they can have enough pet food to contribute to low income families that are sheltering at home and struggling this time, and that they can help them out as well. So raj, get your i paipad and s reading to a dog. It is valley Humane Society. Valley humane. Org. I think is will be flooded after this segment. For sure. Thank you, jessica. Up next at 5 00, not going out, but still dressing up. A mother and daughter found a fashionable and creative way to pass the time during this coronavirus. A fun story. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri outside without sun, which is starting to set right now, all in all, a really gorgeous day out here across the bay area. But we have some changes as we roll into this upcoming weekend. So lets take you outside to that live High Definition sky camera network, and one spot we would all love to be right now is the beach. You can see, this camera here, from the outer sunset, just thought i would take you somewhere else this afternoon, it shows those clear skies right now. And once again, some changes are on the way. So lets go ahead and get a look at that. What youre going to be able to see is the storm track is going to be able to lower, down here, closer to the bay area, it is going to really dissect northern california, in half, so areas near reading, chico, they will see the rain, and then we will be on the Southern Side of it, were expecting drizzle and patchy fog for the morning. So the way things are going to look tomorrow, certainly going to be a lot different here. You can see the widespread cloud cover, and some spotty drizzle, right there near the coastline, and as we move through the afternoon, i do anticipate some sun, but notice how in the north bay, you are likely going to have the clouds lingering and a slight chance of some drizzle. And then off to the north, this late season storm will bring trace amounts to about a quarter of an inch, to the north coastline, and then places from reading, just off to the north. And as we move through tomorrow morning, you will see temperatures begin in the low 50s, with a mix of clouds and also soggy drizzle, and as we get a lansco, 50. And the north bay at 48. So a cool start, with those clouds as they roll in. And with this weather pattern change, it isnt the best time to be outside, it is going to be in the afternoon though, as we should see some of the sun breaks. Were in for about a ten degree temperature drop. I think it is going to be noticeable. 71 here in san jose. And 72 in cupertino. Instead of upper 70s and low 80s in the east bay. Were back down to 69 in walnut creek, and 66 in oakland. And the peninsula, also dropping back down to reality. Closer to our averages. 68 in redwood city. 62 in daly city. San francisco, i have you down to 59 in the marina and 64 ingallside. Right through the north side, 67 in clear lake. And 69 in novato. My extended forecast shows, San Francisco with that chance of fog and spotty drizzle through the morning. Then notice how we warm up. Once we hit next thursday. 70 degrees. For the inland valleys, well see the chance of fog tomorrow morning. Isolated drizzle. A few Early Morning clouds on sunday but generally increased sunshine, and then we see things go way back up, to 90 once we move into next thursday and friday. Now, with all of this weather, and a lot of you heading out to do some landscaping, some gardening, corn, squash, zucchini, cucumber, chiles, all great things to plant for may. And janelle i saw you Instagram Story last month, you have a pretty mighty garden going yourself. I had to mention that. Thanks for the shoutout. I planted the artichokes and the cauliflower last year, and the strawberries, nothing came out of it. I havent watered it for ten months and all of a sudden, it is bearing so much fruit. Its often. And vegetables. Beautiful. Thank you very much. And remember, nurse ris open on monday. I know. So i got to start planning. Monday. Thanks, jeff. Thanks.
