A lot of relieved homeowners in south san jose right now after manufacturers knocked down flames that burned up the hillside near their houses. Pg e says the fire started around 12 15 this afternoon after a vehicle crashed into a power pole in the area of santa teresa boulevard and bayless drive. About 120 firefighters swarmed the hills, and with the help of an aerial attack and a bulldoze contain the fire to about 75 acres. 15 homes were voluntarily evacuated as a precaution. I got a note from pg e, a text, saying that the power was out, came home and just was watching the fire come down the hill towards our neighborhood. It was crazy. No one was hurt. Firefighters managed to get the fire out in about five hours. Well, firefighters made quick work of that fire in san jo jose, and that came hours after firefighters in Contra Costa County knocked down a similar brush fire within two hours. Christie smith talked with bay fire about the strategy for attacking the fires fast and joins us live in Contra Costa County. Christie . Reporter jessica, this is the hill that burned last night. As you can imagine, people who live up the road from here, they kept on top of it. The good news, no homes threatened, and it was all wrapped up pretty quickly. I did speak with cal fire today, and they tell me that right now, any fire thats reported will get Additional Resources on the first alarm and then theyll adjust. In case something was happening, i can kind of alert the neighbors through neighborhood watch. Reporter sue peshoda lives in brentwood and last night took this footage of fire trucks when she rode out to see how close it was. She heard a grass fire broke out in a rural area. Of course, its dry everywhere, so yeah, you know, were new to the area two years now, so we dont know how often this happens around here. Reporter no homes were threatened, but with hot temperatures, the hill at vasco road and marsh creek was on fire. Firefighters had it contained to 15 acres in just two hours. They werent in the red flag warning, but it doesnt take much, as we can see and weve seen this year, doesnt take much to get that fire to go and spread very rapidly. Reporter steve obears with the east contra costa Fire Protection district. He says they stay ready and have had quick attacks on fires. Cal fire says the fire danger is increasing. Although weve had a relatively quiet or mild fire season so far, were only starting to enter those critical months across the state for both the danger and the potential for wind. Reporter so far, weve not seen massive wildfires this season, and that means firefighters, when requested, can arrive more quickly. For instance, back in early august, 400 firefighters showed up in a short amount of time for the marsh complex fires between clayton and brentwood. The thing were most concerned about is when the wind events happen rater in the summer and into the fall, we become [ no audio ] reporter and we are back here live. Now, i did speak with Contra Costa County fire and they tell me theyre staffing up right now due to the heat. Days after san joses mayor introduced a historic gun control proposal, a councilwoman is going on the offensive against him. Maya esparza says the mayor was grandstanding when he announced the idea this week to have gun owners buy liability insurance. Esparzas cousin was killed in the gilroy mass shooting. The councilwoman sat down exclusively with damian trujillo, who is live with reaction. Reporter some very explosive comments by the councilwoman that today she rarely gives interviews but says today she felt she needed to speak out. [ gunfire ] she can still hear the tragic sounds from that july afternoon at the gilroy garlicmanaya espa cousin was stephen romero, the little boy killed in the chaos. Stephens mother and grandmother were also hit by gunfire but survived. This is a very personal thing for me, and i havent spoken about it to anybody else. Reporter what now upset esparza is this, the press conference the mayor called on monday, proposing gun owners in the city be required to buy liability insurance. To me, it felt like the mayor was more interested in chasing headlines than in committing to specific actions that would make communities like mine safer. Reporter esparza says she spoke with the mayor on friday about working on some sort of gun ordinance where she suggested hate crime provisions be a part of it. Then she saw the mayors news conference. And i came home from the burial and the funeral to read all of this, and it was just it was too much. We continue to welcome her input and the input of others who care passionately about this issue as we do. Reporter the mayor told us he doesnt take offense to esparza calling the proposal headlinechasing. Mayor sam liccardo says hes been talking about and working a gun insurance ordinance for nine months and provided us with recent emails we sparsas office discussing the issue. I would support anything that would ensure that weve plugged any gaps in punishment or sanctions for hate crimes. As you know, that legislation really happens at the state and federal level. Red es the victims to tax burdens. Reporter esparza says she wont stop and will likely propose her own legislation. Now, vice mayor Chappie Jones and Council Member recall morales officially signed on with the mayors proposal that came out hours ago. Is next week the week that the jury in the ghost ship trial decides on a verdict . The jury wrapped up its second week of deliberation today with another request. This one, though, caught the defense by surprise. Nbc bay areas melissa colorado joins us now from the courthouse with what they were asking for. Melissa . Reporter well, jess, we all thought that maybe this would be the note indicating a hint of a verdict, but no, that was not the case. It turns out, the jury is requesting a readback of a portion of testimony from a witness named carmen breedo. She was a resident of the ghost ship warehouse for about a year and was there on the night of the deadly fire. And interviewe january of 2017 for a story for donations for people displaced by the fire. Prosecutors brought her back up to the stand in late may. The jury is focusing on what she said during cross examination, specifically when defense attorney tony sara asked her about what was discussed during the communal meetings at the ghostship. She testified that the topic of fire safety was brought up. She said people did talk about having a fire Sprinkler System but that at the end of the day, the Art Collective did not own the building and they did not have the thousands of dollars necessary to install a fire Sprinkler System. Sara says he has mixed feelings about this request and what it could mean for his der Derick Almena. Should i see it as positive . But they never asked ever again to hear my clients testimony, and i from my perspective as a negative. Great because it doesnt show anything in any way showing culpability on his part. So, what else did breedo have to say and what else could they focus on in terms of what it could mean for the outcome for next week . Reporter well, as you just heard from the defense attorneys, carmen breedo was an excellent witness for the defense. I mean, she told the jury that she never felt unsafe at the warehouse because she knew there was a fire station about a block away. She did say that during these communal meetings at the warehouse there were some concerns about not having a fire Sprinkler System, and she also said that nobody complained about the front staircase that Derick Almena built. So, it looks like the jury is perhaps looking into whether any of the tenants at the ghost ship warehouse ever told Derick Almena and max harris about any fire safety concerns. And of course, theyre going to have to judge whether criminal negligence played a role in that. Guys . Okay. Very interesting. We will see what happens next week. Thank you, melissa. The San Francisco lifer said alternative was less appetizing. Where would you be in terms of housing in San Francisco . I would still be renting, and thats where i would be, maybe forced to move out later on if the rent increased. Reporter only a few dozen people received those loans last year. For context, there are 6,000 members of San Franciscos Educator Union from librarians to paraeducators. Their salaries are not as high as teachers, so you can imagine that if the teachers are struggling, so are paraeducators. Reporter Susan Solomon is president of the union, pushing for prop b in the fall, that would allow the city to convert some schoolowned property into housing just for educators. A quick question about how many Union Members currently own tells you everything you need to know. I think i personally heard of maybe two members buying a home in the last couple years in San Francisco. Reportealso talng almost 3 billion of state money into Affordable Housing and homelessness. People in orinda are fighting to save a 100yearold oak tree. The branches of the huge tree offer partial shade to three homes, but some new houses are going in nearby. So, we have a 100plusyearold tree that were trying to save, and we have a city that was not enforcing the mitigation measure meant to save that tree and preserve it for the future. So at 9 30 in the morning, were still starting off mild. Lots of 70s here for the south bay, east bay, and also for the north bay, but by the afternoon, 1 00 p. M. , instead of already being in the 100s, were going to be in the low to mid90s here for antioch, danville, concord, also san jose, down to morgan hill. So, a little bit better, and thats why instead of 105 and 106 tomorrow, were going to take those numbers down. Its a little bit of cooling here, but not as bad as 106. 102 in antioch, 101 in livermore, 102 in concord.
