Right now at 5 43, as we get a live look outside right now, headed out the door in fremont, headed to the b. A. R. T. Station it will be in the low 60s. Well see the clouds lingering throughout much of the day, as we warm up into the mid70s for lunch time. Still looking pretty good. But this is really starting to back up at the bay bridge toll plaza. A lot of people heading out. Metering lights are now on, and i wanted to give you an update, we have a new Traffic Alert in the east bay, in oakland, now a sig alert for eastbound 580 at seminary avenue. We have a new crash, and thats really causing a big slowdown. Ill have more on this and also the rest of the crashes around the bay area, thats coming up in less than five minutes. Of course we are continuing our coverage, two of the most recent Mass Shootings over the weekend and of course that comes in the wake of the gilroy rampage. Over the course of less than 24 hours, el paso, texas, dayton, ohio, ravaged by violence. In total 29 people died, more than 50 other people are injured. Nbcs jay gray is live in el paso this morning. It has to be a difficult mood there this morning. Reporter yes, kris, scott, a rough start to the week both here and in dayton. Lets start with el paso, which is where the shooting started, 20 killed, more than two dozen injured. You can see behind me the area still locked down, this is still an active crime scene at the walmart. It was packed with back to School Shoppers at the time of the attack. Investigators here in dayton and those who live in the two grieving communities looking for answers. Motive at the heart of what many are hoping to find out about in this case and right now investigators say its just way too early to have any idea of what was the driving factor, what caused these men to carry out these attacks. We know here its going to be a meticulous long investigation. Sames been said in dayton where they are working through the crime scene as well. In both areas, police as well as federal agents, joining efforts to try and honor those who were killed, they say, and pay their respects to those who were wounded by getting to the bottom of what happened. In both communities weve seen memorials overnight. Here a lot of people saying that it gives them strength to be together. They need to be around others who are going through the same type of crisis. I talked to the mayor here yesterday, who told me that this wont define his city, that its going to be a difficult go, but this wont be the defining factor here, but he also was quick to point out, theyve got to get through 20 funerals before they can even start to think about healing. Thats a number thats hard to get your head around, 20 funerals, average per year over the last decade here in el paso is 18 murders, so they eclipsed that, scott and kris, in a matter of just minutes on saturday. Its just so difficult, jay, to know that those people there from what i understand are praying for the gunman, praying for his salvation, despite the fact that he took down so many people. Reporter yes. You know the giving nature of this community, and how kind people are, and youre right. Theyve been kind to us since weve pulled up offering us food, offering us water. Theyve been out at the memorial thats growing behind us here at the site around the clock, just like the investigators, and some of them here and as you talk about, praying for the man that attacked their community, saying that he needs help more than they do right now, that he needs the help that the families of the victims need the help. Its been really remarkable to see the outpouring of love here. And jay gray, we were talking earlier about how you have covered Mass Shootings in the past, and youre talking to parents who lost people, lost children in which they say i cant believe this happened to us but this does happen. It happens all over the nation. Reporter thats the thing, scott. It continues to happen time after time. For the last several years, and just intensifying. One of the studies, one of the groups that tracks these shootings say that this was our 249th, 250th of the year. Theres only been 216 day this is year. So more than one a day, again, its just hard to really fathom that, and then youve got a Community Like this one, el paso, which has continually been included in the top three safest cities in the nation. It really doesnt happen here and now it has to such an extent that its going to change the lives of those who survived forever. All right, well this has certainly thrust el paso again into the immigration debate but if you are there, when you are there, as i was, as a young reporter, you know that they dont talk about the immigration issue much. It is we are all one people and that was something i found remarkable there. Jay gray in texas, thank you so much. Again, President Trump will be addressing the nation this morning at 7 00 a. M. Our time. You can watch those remarks here on nbc bay area, that comes right after today in the bay. Back here in the bay area, the debate over immigration will take center stage tonight. Congressman Mark Desaulniers will hold a town meeting on the issue. Hes expected to talk about his recent trip to the Southern United States mexico border. Le that event starts at 6 30 tonight held at st. Marcs Catholic Church in richmond. California hospitals are asking lawmakers to rethink a bold earthquake safety plan. The plan is to have all hospitals not just earthquake safe but capable of staying open after an earthquake. Those standards supposed to take effect in the year 2030, but nurses unions pushing back amidst concerns some facilities might have to close. Hospitals are now asking for the new standards to be scaled back arguing they are too costly and might not be needed. New video shows cowboy s lassoing a runaway longhorn. Weve got a big backup here and thats also affecting the flow of traffic, but we also have another crash at the Castro Valley y.
