Shoppers inside this el paso mall run for safety after a gunman opens fire at the neighboring Walmart Store packed with back to school shoppers. Those who couldnt escape took cover. Doom, doom, doom, and it was shots. Yes, people were running inside saying there was a shooter. We took off towards the back of the store where the stockroom was. We were pushing people out of the way telling them to go. Police say the gunman walked into the walmart what a highpowered rifle at 10 30 in the morning. Police arrived just 6 minutes later but many already shot. 20 innocent people from el paso have lost their lives, and more than two dozen more are injured. A short time later, the 21yearold man surrendered to police. Law enforcement sources tell nbc news hes Patrick Crusius from 600 miles away. Investigators posted a document online which they believe crusius wrote. It is characterized as antiimmigration, antigovernment and anticorporation. The shooter criticized republicans and democrats and said he had these feelings prior to the trump administration. President trump tweeting, todays shooting in el paso, texas, was not only tragic iks about an act of cowardice. I want everyone in this country to condemn today apartments hateful act. There is no excuse to justify killing innocent people. Beto orourke is a native of el paso and represented the city in congress for six years. Its a lot of injury, a lot of suffering in el paso right now. Im incredibly saddened and it is very hard to think about this. California senator Kamala Harris is condemning todays shooting. The president ial candidate says new reasonable gun laws are needed in the United States now. Our kids are terrorized and it is within our control to act, and act in a way that recognizes we dont have to tolerate this. And we can do something about it. Other nations have. Also an impassioned tweet from governor newsome, it reads, again. On sunday it was gilroy, today its el paso. Our malls, our festivals, our concerts, our churches, our synagogues, our movie theaters, our classrooms, our homes. This is an epidemic. This is a crisis. Treat it like one. Tonight we talked to some people who lost relatives during that shooting who are now hit with the news of yet another mass shooting. Lift your candles and close your eyes and think of kayla. Reporter family and friends honored Keyla Salazar in san jose l, the 13yearold girl gunned down in the garlic festival shooting. People died today in el paso, texas. Reporter mourners took the time to remember the latest mass shooting victims in el paso, even as their hearts are already heavy and they havent even had time to heal. Its almost like hitting us all over again without finishing the process. Reporter the news hit hard in gilroy, too, as folks are trying to regain some sense of normalcy. Its very shocking especially because it was so soon. My heart is out for the people. My heart hurts for them because, like, nobody should have to go through this. Reporter at the vigil, many spoke about the need to do something, including keylas aunt. How many Mass Shootings have to happen for, you know, congress to really act and think that theres a problem or something that needs to be fixed . Reporter but for now she has this message for the el paso victims and their families. Were feeling your pain. We share the same anger and frustration and, you know, i feel i really feel us victims need to come together and heal each other because this pain is something, you know, undescribable. Reporter now, tomorrow would have been keylas 14th birthday. There is a celebration planned for her tomorrow afternoon, a wake for monday, her funeral is set for tuesday morning. The festival of the arts draws in 4,000 people. They are bringing in officers, steel barricades, surveillance tower and more. The father of the teenager that killed the Italian Police officer has returned home. The they pent the last few days in rome. They briefly saw 19yearold finnegan elder. Sergio quintana was at a live news conference. Hes live in San Francisco for us. Sergio. Reporter attorney craig peters says they were only able to meet with finnegan elder for one hour on each of the two days that they were there. Though they have returned to the bay area, he says the legal battle on behalf of the 19yearold continues. Fresh off their flight from rome, ethan elder and attorney craig peters walked past the assembled news media outside the familys Richmond District home. They returned a few minutes later and he read from a prepared statement. We saw our son finnegan. He was okay. Tired, remorseful and scared. He has our full support and we stand by his side. Reporter according to italian prosecutors, 19yearold finnegan elder stabbed under cover Italian Police officer mario rega 11 times with a knife, killing him. Investigators say rega was responding to a cocaine deal gone wrong between finnegan, his friend natale hjorth, and the dealer. The Attorney Says elders offer their condolence to the regas family. We continue to hold his family in our thoughts and pray for them during this difficult time. Reporter ethan elder and craig peters flew to rome earlier this week. They met with begin began in jail and his italian defense attorneys. During their nearly threeminute long statement, attorney peters said the bay area teens are being unfairly charged and the public is not being told the full story about what happened in rome. Fires between clayton and brentwood, hundreds of firefighters will be object scene working on full containment and monitoring hot spots. The people are breathing a sigh of relief tonight. Some ran from their homes early this morning as flames closed in. My husband is yelling, fire, fire. People are waking up saying, oh, my god, thank you for waking us up. Then it was like gridlock parking lot here. We saw it in the distance growing, and it was starting to get bigger and bigger. Oh, no. Nearly 700 acres have burned. No homes, though, were damaged. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heatrelated injuries. Well, there was a lot of heat today. The weather slowly cooling down tonight, but firefighters will have to contend with another hot day tomorrow. Meteorologist rob mayeda has the weather. As the temperatures cool off, 70 degrees in concord now. Staying low tonight, relatively mild into the low 60s there. Some of the hills, though, may still see temperatures in the upper 60s to closer to 70 degrees. Now, the wind direction is still pushing the smoke and any air quality issues it looks like away from the bay area. Fire started around 2 30 near the golf course. Flames came close to a few mobile homes in the area and they did damage a fence. A hit and run involving a union city Police Officer happened late last night in the area of g and 5th street. A toyota prius was speeding down the road when it crashed into a police car door. Police detained one of the passengers, but the driver and the other passengers took off running. The officer was rushed to the hospital after suffering head and neck injuries. Luckily that officer is doing just fine, was released from the hospital this morning. Still to come, not one, but two pilots grounded before they could even fly. The flight headed to the u. S. And the reason the pilots had their wings clipped. Plus, apple getting rid of grading. The moving made by the company because of privacy concerns. Thats 9 distinct call of californias iconic red legged frog. The species has been on the brink of extinction, basically wiped out at Yosemite National park because of natural and manmade enemies. The San Francisco zoo is bringing the state amphibian back by breeding a new generation in captivity. First zoo biologists and bed tracking chips in the frogs skin. Then after a life in captivity, theyre ready for their first leap into the wild. Biologists hope that this experiment is the model for other threatened species. We want to have kids interacting with nature. And to me frogs, turtles, fish are the best way to do that. The bold new project appears to be working. Biologists are finding the frogs eggs at yosemite and its a sign that theyre breeding there once again. Theyre very happy. That video is fantastic. That sound. Also from the snow pack. We have temperatures tomorrow nice and comfortable once again, and the good news about the cooler temperatures coming our way, air quality should be for this time of year at least pretty good. As we go through the next seven days. Right now out towards livermore thats not a bad drop off in temperatures considering it was 96 degrees earlier. Right now 64 may see some hints of low clouds approaching the trivalley by morning. Right now san jose 65 degrees, high of 85. Similar temperatures expected tomorrow. And in San Francisco fog is in full effect. 64 degrees, misty skies, and a little drizzle across the golden gate bridge. And we do have those on shore winds bringing those low clouds, and now temperatures starting to cool off both the higher hills of the east bay may still see temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 overnight, but closer to sea level numbers. Pretty comfortable as well be waking up to close to 50s, 60s in livermore. Notice the low clouds. You saw it there in the San Francisco camera during the day. Theyll retreat back off to the west of downtown San Francisco. And eventually were not only going to be seeing these low clouds and fog, but increasing high clouds, add Tropical Weather to our south monday and tuesday. Changes in stronger sea breeze and clouds lead to cooling once we get out of the weekend. Highs tomorrow similar to what we had today. Mid80s around san jose. May still see 90s south of san jose. Consider morgan hill today was 98 degrees. Tomorrow looks like low to maybe some mid 90s. Maybe not quite as hot as we had today. Still 90s, though, inland. Trivalley, pittsburgh, antioch 80s. Martinez and hayward, mid80s day around the fremont festival of the arts tomorrow. You can see the peninsula pretty comfortable. Winds still coming . So well be watching for those increasing clouds, may see a little bit of it late tomorrow at times, as temperatures stay hot for one more day inland. You can see the cooling once we get into monday and tuesday for the middle part of the week, including San Francisco. Going from the mid to upper 60s to low 60s later this week.
