you can stop the guns from getting into these children's hands. >> how will washington respond? here it comes. much of the east coast bracing for a nasty winter storm this weekend, from snow to ice to freezing rain, al has the forecast. all that, plus tough going for team usa. mikaela shiffrin just missing out on another medal. >> 0.08 between fourth and a bronze medal. that's definitely -- it stinks. >> a crushing night for nathan chen, while another american dazzles. >> adam is the prince of the olympics. and she's back. lindsey vonn set for her first race tonight. we'll talk to her about her return to the olympic stage, eight years in the making. today, friday, february 16th, 2018. >> from nbc news, this is "today," with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live in pyeongchang, south korea. and good morning, everybody. welcome to "today," on a friday morning. we're glad to have you with us. >> we are. we have a lot to get to this morning from here in pyeongchang. we do want to begin back at home with the latest on the tragic school shooting in florida. >> overnight there was a powerful scene in parkland as thousands attended a candlelight vigil for the victims. this morning, we are learning more about the 19-year-old believed to be behind the shooting after police say he confessed. we have in-depth coverage for you. and we'll start with nbc's gabe gutierrez. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the 19-year-old nikolas cruz confessed to police that he was the gunman who shot up marjory stoneman douglas high school here, killing 17 people. and now, questions are swirling about whether warning signs were missed. we're hearing about the details about the timeline and one student came face-to-face with cruz just moments before the massacre. the gunfire lasted less than ten minutes. but this morning, new details are emerging about how the terrifying rampage unfolded. one student says he encountered the shooter loading up his weapon before the attack began. >> he said, you better get out of here, things are going to get messy. >> reporter: he says, nikolas cruz was loaded with a bullet-proof vest, and an ar-15. at 2:06 p.m., an uber car picked him up, dropping him off at the school at 2:19. at 2:21 the suspect enters the east stairwell of the building. and then, begins shooting at several classrooms before heading to the second and third floors. >> around 2:30 we heard a gunshot. >> at first, david hawke thought it was a drill, similar to one heard earlier in the day. >> we walk outside to our evacuation zone. and on the way there, there's a flood of people coming in the opposite direction. and they say go back. he's coming this way. >> reporter: trapped with dozens of his terrified classmates, he took this cell phone video of this time when they didn't know where the gunman was. at 2:27, the gunman drops the rifle and backpack and runs down the stairs where he blends in with other students. at 2 dcoup 50 he makes it to walmart and gets a drink. at 3:01, he is in mcdonald's. 40 minutes later police arrest him without incident. >> we will continue to gather information about the suspect as we try to identify his motives. >> reporter: this video, obtained by cnn and not verified by nbc, reportedly shows cruz in october, firing a weapon in his backyard in broad daylight. this morning, nikolas cruz is being held out bail, charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. as he faced the judge, he said just two words. >> yes, ma'am. >> his attorney offering this defense. >> he's sad. he's mournful. he's remorseful. he is fully aware of what is going on. and he's just a broken human being. >> reporter: but were warning signs missed? back in september, ben bennight alerted the fbi after cruz left this chilling comment on a youtube page. i'm going to be a professional school shooter. >> i felt it was important to give it to the proper authorities so they could do an investigation. >> reporter: the fbi says agents tried to track down the person who posted the comment but hit a brick wall. cruz had no criminal history. students and neighbors say he had a troubled past, however, and his mother had just died in november. right now he's being held without bail in an isolated cell on suicide watch. hoda and savannah? >> gabe, thank you. now, back to that moving scene we showed you at the top of the show. thousands of people turning out for a vigil to remember the victims and, as one speaker put it, to mourn the potential that was lost, this as survivors try to cope with their overwhelming grief. nbc's kerry sanders has more on all this. hey, kerry. >> reporter: good morning. overnight, two victims were released from the hospital. that leaves now here at the hospital, one in critical condition, six others in stable condition. but this morning, there are so many more victims who are recovering at home. not injured physically, but rather, emotionally wounded. this morning, inconsolable anguish for 17 devastated families. >> those lives should not be lost in vain. >> reporter: and heartbreak for an entire community, who will never get to hug, kiss or laugh with their friends and classmates again. haley betancourt lost eight friends. >> i was really close with them, too. it's horrible. why? >> reporter: among the dead, 15-year-old luke hoyer, who loved basketball. 15-year-old peter wang, last seen holding a door so others could escape. football coach aaron feis, protecting his students from bullets by using himself as a human shield. >> he is a hero. he will be remembered as a hero. >> reporter: 17-year-old joaquin oliver became an american citizen just last year. >> he wasn't afraid to go against the grain, which in high school is not very common. >> reporter: psychologists say survivors are victims, too. 15-year-old isabella gomez texted her older brother good-bye. >> i love you, if anything happens to me. he said, what, i love you, noodle. what's going on. >> reporter: you weren't sure you were getting out. >> i thought i was done. so much screaming. i can hear it all over again. shots right by me. >> reporter: grief counselors say posttraumatic triggers may creep up in unexpected moments. >> this morning, my friend was doing her makeup and she was slamming the drawers. and it freaked me out because i heard the loud noises and it reminded me of the shots. >> reporter: some survivors say just talking about it helps. >> i was hearing bullets like, boom, boom, boom. stop for a second. boom, boom, boom. and he was screaming, open the door. open the door. i was leaning against the wall and he was shooting at the wall. he shot higher. i was sitting on the floor. i felt it sizzling. you could hear like a firecracker. >> in the grief, emotions erupting, as in this interview on cnn. >> i just spent the last two hours putting the burial arrangements for my daughter's funeral who is 14. president trump, you say what can you do? you can stop the guns from getting into these children's hands! >> reporter: and for those who ducked bullets, it's way too early to think about what is next. school must resume. can you go back? >> i don't want to go back there. i really don't. it's too much. i have friends that are dead there, that died there, and i don't want to walk back through there. >> at the moment students are being urged to seek counseling. and parents are being told to look for signs of their children withdrawing and to recognize that they may have some emotional delayed reactions, much like soldiers returning from war exhibit ptsd. hoda? savannah? >> all right, kerry sanders. kerry, thank you. in the meantime, the president is planning to travel to parkland to meet with families and first responders. the shooting and what the president did and did not say during his address to the nation, has revived the debate of guns in this country. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house for us with that part of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the president tweeting i'll be leaving for florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth, but people whose lives have been totally shattered. in terms of pushing any new policies, the president has been silent. >> we are here for you. >> reporter: cast again as comforter-in-chief. >> your suffering is our burden also. >> reporter: president trump at times thursday targeting his message. >> i want to speak to america's children. >> reporter: some say missing the mark. the president in a seven-minute speech, never mentioning the word gun or semiautomatic rifles, like the ar-15 used to kill 17 in that school in south florida. instead calling the loan suspect mentally disturbed, calling out neighbors and classmates for not reporting his erratic behavior. >> we're committed with working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the difficult issue of mental health. >> reporter: after last year revoking obama-era regulations to make it harder for some with mental illness to buy guns and failing to follow-up on any changes to federal gun laws in the five months since the las vegas massacre. now, democrats insist it's time to take actions. >> mr. speaker, can you tell us when the house may muster the courage to take up the issue of gun violence? [ applause ] >> the gentleman is not stating a proper parliamentary inquiry. >> reporter: adding renewed pressure. >> if you are not working today to try to fix this, to try to stop the shootings, you're an accomplice. >> reporter: some republican leaders insist it's too soon. >> this is not the time to jump to conclusions. >> reporter: one senator from florida isn't ready to rule new restrictions out. >> none of the laws that have been presented here in the past would have prevented any of the attacks, including the one yesterday. that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do. >> reporter: meanwhile one-time top strategist steve bannon meeting over multiple days with robert mueller, unloading on his old boss. new yorker" is alleging details about an alleged affair between donald trump and a former playmate of the year. according to this article, mcdougle documented their relationship in an eight-page note shared with the magazine. the article says "the national inquirer" owned by a friend of president trump paid $150,000 to kill the story. the alleged affair and payment was reported by "the wall street journal," immediately before the 2016 election. the white house says the president never had a relationship with mcdougal saying, quote, this is an old story, just more fake news. >> peter alexander, thank you. much of the east coast is bracing for a powerful winter storm. we're talking about snow and ice and freezing rain. that could have a big impact on travel. that means it's time to hear from mr. roker. >> that's right. we're seeing a lot of heavy rain throughout parts of the northeast and the allegheny river valley. we're looking at winter storm watches from eastern pennsylvania into new england. 30 million people at risk. the snow will start saturday evening and go to into sunday evening. we have the front bringing in colder air and heavy rain. tomorrow morning another low pressure system moves across the south. heavy rain risk with possible flooding. it becomes snow in the northeast. we're looking for snowfall heavy in the mountains of west virginia. also looking at heavy snow, 3 to 6 inches from long island, coastal connecticut, parts of rhode island into new england. as you get further to the west, the snowfall amounts drop down a bit. again, guys, the path of this storm hasn't started quite yet. but if it moves is in the a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia. a suspected car thief is in the hospital after police say he smashed into a group of parked cars in santa rosa. santa rosa police posted images of the crash which happened a little after midnight. police say the suspect had stolen a car and neighbors who witnessed it were actually following him. the car plowed into cars at high speed. the driver was actually ejected. police say several of the cars then caught fire, but they were quickly put out. the suspect's injuries are not considered life-threatening. let's get a look at the forecast on this friday morning with meteorologist kari hall. >> and, laura, we have had some spots dipping to the freezing mark, but we're starting to rebound as of now and are heading into the mid to upper 60s for our afternoon high temperature. it will be a nice one with some light winds but those winds will pick up and temperatures will drop by sunday. up to 53 degrees, that will be the high in san francisco on sunday and that's the kind of weather we will see into the middle of next week. inland areas will be colder during the morning hours, most likely freezing down to 32 degrees on tuesday morning, and then more sunshine in the forecast. we will only have a slight chance of seeing light snow flurries in the forecast for the far north bay. we will be watching that for monday. to 17th place. >> your initial thoughts on what happened out there? >> just rough again. it happens. will try to move on from here. >> reporter: the botched program, after a similar struggle in the team event. the team went on to win the bronze. but chen is a long shot to medal again. it's a huge blow for the 18-year-old sensation who was undefeated this season and had high expectations coming into the games. what captures your passion and your imagination about this sport? >> you're performing for a whole bunch of people, which is an amazing part of skating. >> reporter: while chen's nerves took hold on the ice, adam rippon's melted away. he commanded the rink with a remarkable team. >> adam is the prince of the olympics. >> reporter: ripon didn't attempt quads but he aced four triple jumps. >> i wanted to take everyone to the club. i feel like i did that. i feel like here in korea, we were just having a blast. it was, like, after-hours and we were listening to our favorite scott hamilton have skated to that? >> savannah. i'm going to tell you right now, exactly what i'm going to do. he's a blast. i love adam. >> we'll talk to him in a minute. we have to talk about nathan chen. i was there. it was crushing. we had so much high hopes for him. >> yeah. you know, we'll talk about him in more detail tomorrow. but you know, i've known nathan since he was 8 years old. and he's been -- every level, just win, win, win, win, win, win, win. and just the progression was just almost like a spike. and then, he came here. and for the first time, i saw a human being. it was almost machine-like to see what he was doing before. and to see him make a mistake, it was like, whoa, i've never seen that happen before. all i can think of, it's like a devastating, deep, horribly timed slump. when you're doing what nathan does and you go from here to there, it changes everything. >> i can't imagine the pressure. i saw a little video of him when he was 7 or 8, saying i'm going to be in the olympics in 2018. so, he's premt abodreamt about . it leads up to this moment. >> he's so chill. you talk to him. he's like, i'm great, i'm really focused. everything seems fine. for a clue, i watched his entire press conference yesterday, nothing. >> nothing. >> again, we all fall down. we all make mistakes. we all go through he's periods that are really difficult. and i've never really seen nathan in his skating life go through anything like this. and i'm sure, you know, he'll respond. he'll grow. >> is he out of medal contention? >> he's in 17th. but he's way behind in points. he only scored like 82 something and the leaders are around 110, 112. >> a real surprise, adam rippon, who had this explosive, lovely performance, is he in medal contention? >> he's in like seventh. and he skates at the end of the next-to-last group. and for him, it's like spotlight, on. he did the math. he's got a quad less. he did -- the first i ever saw was his. he did it at nationals. he did the math. throughout the year, he's not getting the levels on the lutz he wanted. i'm 28 years old, going to my first olympics, guess what? i'm going to party on the ice like it's nobody's business. and he's the most well-trained athlete i've ever seen. he works harder than everybody else. and the quads just aren't his thing. but the performance is his thing. when his feet are on the ice, he's wracking up the points. >> everybody is cheering. >> he's a blast. >> we're out of time. but we have to give him his due. >> he was the first to do a quad. he's a stud. watch out for that cold air comes in and the temperatures start dropping down, just in time for the storm system to come in. high pressure comes across and brings in the cold air. that storm will bring in the cold air along the east coast. the good news is, it's not going to hang around. as we get into tuesday of next week. 75 in d.c., 66, minneapolis, raleigh will see a high, 76 degrees on tuesday. whatever snow falls, it's going bye-bye. that's what's going on aroun we've got a lot of sunshine and a cool start to the day. for the afternoon it's going to be a nice one, up to 69 degrees in san jose, 70 in santa cruz. looks like a beach day. but it will be cooler at half-moon bay, 61 degrees and some low 60s for san francisco and oakland. expect a high of 69 degrees in napa this afternoon. it will be >> a traditional new year's soup that you have to eat every lunar new year. it's made with duck. it's korean rice cakes. they look like coins. it's very symbolic. the coins represent wealth and prosperity. and also, they're white. it represents purity to start the new year, very clean and in a fresh new way. we're starting off with a beef stock. you can use chicken stock or vegetarian stock. it's nice and warm, huh? and we're going to add some dumplings. dumplings are very similymbolsy. they represent parcels or purses, also about wealth. >> also delicious. >> exactly. you can put any meat. here, we have oxtail, supertraditional also. >> you would eat this on what we consider new year's day? >> absolutely. you have to eat it. you can't celebrate new year's without it in any way. and also an egg. you crack that in there. that adds some creaminess to the soup. you give it a stir. kind of like an egg drop soup. that egg will blend in there and will make some nice ribbons. and there's all about the garnish. korean cooking is all about the five colors, the five textures and the five flavors. and with the garnish, you have an egg omelet and you slice it up cleanly like this. it's hard to chop in the cold. my fingers are freezing. this is what it looks like in the end. >> wonderful. >> that looks really great. thank you. >> you're going to put some spring onions or scallions on top, some chopped seaweed and sesame seeds. >> what is this?
