"today." it's evening in pyeongchang and what an evening it is. fireworks over medal plaza as athletes who competed today are receiving those medals, having their moments. and had this is our plaza, this is our little spot, our piece of the universe and the some team usa athletes are right here. >> you are so right. by the way, we have a humongous crowd on our plaza along with those great athletes. 9:00 here in pyeongchang. part of the reason there's such a huge crowd is they've had such terrible windy conditions here, they actually had to shut down this park. they reopened it recently and all the crowds have just filed in and they're all right behind us. it's -- it's awesome. >> it is. it's incredible. the wind has been the story today and it's not just a bad hair day. it's actually impacted several events up in the mountains. and overnight, they arrived here on the coastal complex. in fact, officials briefly cleared this place out as a precaution. we're going to have more on those winds in a moment, but let's begin with snowboarder shaun white, golden once again cementing his place as one of team usa's greatest olympians ever. but there is some controversy to tell hey, hoda, good morning. this is what they call the call after the storm. the spectators are back. but olympic park here's was evacuated as high winds caused real danger. winds blowing over tents causing damage and danger and knocking down barriers, some right outside our set. officials closing down all the stores here in the olympic park. the park was je just reopened, but the high winds have been a constant issue at these games. four events were canceled and delayed today. i was at the highly anticipated women's slalom race. everyone was wait to go watch mikaela shiffrin. it was delayed four times and finally rescheduled to friday. so more pressure for mikaela. meanwhile, drama for us. all day we've been getting messages on our cell phones warning of these high winds. my friend, al roker can tell us whether we'll have more of this in the days to come. >> as a matter of fact, we talked about this yesterday. this was going be a problem. here is what's going on. we're talking about this big, strong high pressure system generating a difference in pressure gradient between that high and low pressure making its way across. the strongest wind gusts, 40 to 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts late tonight on into tomorrow. the winds will start to die down, but then thursday morning we're going to see those winds increase again and then finally decrease late in the day thursday. but may pick up again on friday when there are more mountain events scheduled. so we're going to be watching this. this is going to be a situation we have over the next 48 to 72 hours. winds die down and then pick back up again. going to cause havoc with this schedule. hoda da. >> al, thanks. we're going t something else that is getting a lot of attention here at the olympics. we're talking about the frightening crashes like the one we saw on tuesday involving american luger emily sweeney. nbc's stephanie gosk is up at the sliding center with that story. hey, stef. >> hey, hoda, good morning. there's one undeniable truth about olympic sport and that is that the winter events are, by far, the fastest and the athletes fly further. today we had several reminders. >> 16-year-old tasuka was lighting up on the half pipe when he did something every snowboarder fears. >> oh, my goodness. >> coming off a big trick, his board caught the lip of the course and came crashing down. for a few very scary moments, the teenager lay on the snow not moving. >> really got hammered right there. >> then tatsuka sat up before being pulled away on a stretcher. the latest report says he was not seriously injured. tatsuka is just the latest to take a spill. >> whoa! >> snowboarders and skiers have been battling the elements over the last couple of days and in some cases losing. >> oh! >> for lugers, the challenge may be the track itself. last night, a collective inhale from the crowd when emily sweeney lost control and slammed into the track. >> that is a hard hit! >> that was a scary moment, wasn't it? >> it was horrific. you know, we were standing next to emily's parents and, you know, they stopped breathing for five minutes. >> fellow luger tucker west and his dad were in the stands, relieved when sweeney got up and seemed okay. >> a little shaky right now. but i know i caught a good amount of air. >> sweeney thankfully walked away with no broken bones. >> this is always our morning, including the developing story out of washington. a long time attorney for president trump has told nbc news he paid a woman who claimed to have an affair with mr. trump. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with details on that. hi, peter. good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. you really can't make this stuff up. that attorney is present, his personal lawyer, saying he paid more than $100,000 of his own money to porn star storm daniels. why did he do it for president trump? telling nbc news just because something isn't true doesn't mean that it can't cause you harm or damage adding, i will always protect mr. trump. this morning, the latest bombshell to hit the white house, president trump's personal lawyer, michael cohen, now admitting that in 2016 he paid $130,000 out of his own pocket to adult film star stormy daniels, daniels, whose real name is stephanie clifford, claims she had a sexual encounter with mr. trump more than a decade ago. in a statement, cohen writes neither the trump organization nor the trump campaign was a party on the action and neither reimbursed me for the payment either directly or indirectly. cohen adding the payment to miss clifford was lawful and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone. last month, "the wall street journal" reported cohen made the payment prior to the 2016 election in exchange for clifford's silence about the alleged sexual encounter. both cohen and the white house repeatedly denied any sexual encounter. clifford has publicly refused to answer questions about whether she had a sexual encounter with mr. trump with, recently sitting down with jimmy kimmel. meanwhile, president trump again ignoring persistent questions about the issues still engulfing his white house. it comes as fbi director christopher wray stunned washington contradicting the white house's timeline of events that led to rob porter's resignation. wray testified that the white house was warned concerning porter's background the months before his resignation and a completed background investigation in late july before receiving requests for a follow-up. >> we did the follow-up and provided that information in november. then we administratively closed the file in january. >> that testimony appearing at odds with what the white house has said for days, that the vetting process for porter, who denies the allegations of domestic abuse, wasn't finished. >> his background investigation was ongoing. he was operating on an interim security clearance. >> it was ongoing, hadn't been completed. >> aides on tuesday offering another new explanation, insisting the white house personnel security office hadn't completed its review. >> they had not made a final recommendation for adjudication to the white house because the process was still ongoing when rob porter resigned. >> but a day earlier, sarah sanders says the fbi is responsible for the background check process. >> this is a process that isn't -- doesn't operate within the white house. it's handled by our law enforcement and intelligence community. >> this morning here at the white house, a lot of rumblings about chief of staff john kelly's status. the white house says president trump still has confidence in kelly, but in yet another contradiction when asked about the porter situation, kelly told "the wall street journal" everything was done right, but remember just days ago, vice president mike pence told lester that the white house could have handled it the conditions turned treacherous near the mountain's peak. the oregon national guard scrambling a black hawk helicopter for a complex rescue mission more than 10,000 feet up. by the night's end, the six >> right. when he realized he couldn't, he got out. as he took about two steps like you saw in the video there were four north korean soldiers that started to shoot at him. >> reporter: that soldier, the first defector to pass through the heavily guarded area since 1984. >> these were part of the 24 rounds we have physical evidence of. >> reporter: the joint security area located in the so-called peace village is meant to be an area that encourages diplomatic exchanges and is the only place where north korean and south korean s can stand face to face. it must have been astonishing to have gunshots ring out here in one of the most tense places in the world. >> this place is different than all of the other places along the dmz. it is for dialogue. it was more significant they fired in this area. >> reporter: can see see where you found the soldier? >> right there. this is basically the path he ran. it was quite remarkable when you see the video of him running and he was getting shot five to six times. >> reporter: he's taking bullets on this whole run. >> right. >> reporter: but he wasn't found right away. >> no. >> reporter: it took south korean soldiers and u.s. servicemen nearly 15 minutes to find the defector. you can see him here, hiding under leaves, helpless. south korean soldiers climbed up from this hill to rescue him. >> right. we knew their guard post there could see here. so instead of just walking up to him they had to crawl on their belly inch by inch to get to him. >> reporter: for all you know if they see him being rescued they take another shot. >> exactly. that's what i we took what we assessed to be prudent measures to rescue him and protect our forces. >> reporter: incredible. the north korean tower is right there. they probably are watching us right now. >> yes, they are. >> reporter: they probably know what we are talking about. bullet holes from the incident scar this wall. i count one, two, three, four, five. as the defector was medevaced to seoul where he was treated for gunshot wounds colonel lee worked to lower the tension in the area. >> we opened that door and used a bull horn which is unusual for us to make sure they got the message. >> reporter: what was the message? >> simply that, hey, one of your soldiers came to our side. we have him. he needs medical attention. he's getting that now. we'll conduct an investigation and when it's done i will come and talk to you about it. we did that once. the north koreans signalled with a flashlight they wanted to hear it again. they didn't hear it well. so we read the message again so we knew they received it. so i think that helped to deescalate and make sure they knew what happened and how we read the situation. >> reporter: you literally shouted it over a bull horn. >> right. from this area so they could clearly hear it. >> reporter: because if you called, what would have happened? >> we did try to call. they didn't answer the phone. that would have been a good time for them to pick up the phone. >> reporter: i think so. the u.n. command does call north korea some three times a day. this is the bat-phone? >> you know, it's been a privilege to get to go to five winter olympics, and we brought one of the most talented, young women's halfpipe teams we've ever brought. it's been a privilege to get to mentor them. i always encourage them not to be defined by what they do. it helps to enjoy what you do. how you finish at the end of the day doesn't equate to how you feel about yourself. >> did you find some of the snowboarders, some on the team here for the first time were saying to you, okay, what's your best advice? i've got nerves. i feel, you know, intimidated by being here at the olympics? >> absolutely. this isn't your standard snowboard contest. much like chloe kim right now. i was the teenage gold medalist. i know what she's going through. i try to make myself available. i was so proud to see those girls do so well yesterday. >> you wound up in fourth place in pyeongchang and there were some people who says the judging was a little harsh. what did you think when you looked back. i'm sure you saw the video of the run. what did you think of that? >> i put down my best performance. as an athlete, you can only control so many things. and what the judges think and what the other women are doing and what the weather is doing, those aren't things within my pay grade. so i'm happy to just be part of it and leave it all on the halfpipe. >> i love what you wrote on instagram. what you build in the dark will be what supports you when it's time to shine. were you just thinking about all those dark mornings and times when you were practicing and putting in the work? >> yeah, that's actually a quote from my new book that came out. it's a book on motivation. and i aim to just help people define success in a healthy way. after five winter olympic games, i know all about success and failure. and so i love the opportunity to put my life on display and hopefully encourage other people to go after their dreams. >> what's your book called?
