A group of lawmakers introduced legislation to keep utilities like pg e to make customers pay for fires sparked by the companys negligence. That could be the cause of those fires that were so destructi destructive. Automated Circuit Breakers that could restore power but can also spark wildfires if the lines are down on the ground. Southern california utilities turn them off this fire but after the north bay wildfire pg e wouldnt say whether it turned it off. The company acknowledged it only has the ability to shut down a limited number. They turned off 38 reclosers. It has 6,900 in its system. It only shut down three reclosers in the hardest hit sonoma and napa areas. Its part of a Pilot Project limited to the worst of the areas considered high fire risk. Senator hill said he surprised the company had such a limited ability given a top official pledged back in 2015 to have shut down capability in all 132 identified high fire risk areas by the 2017 fire season. Thats the troubling part that may mislead us into that. As they said they didnt have that system in place then we would have followed up with more questions to try to find out what the problem was and may have been able to focus in on that a couple of years ago that may have prevented these fires in october. What we can tell you is this all started just before 5 00 this evening when bart officers heard some sort of altercation across the street from the west bart station. They came out to the city of oakland and witnessed two men, i understand, wrestling with a gun at 7th and chestnut. Sometime during that incident gunfire was fired. Its unclear who fired the gunshot if it was the suspect. We know a gunfire, a shot was discharged from one of the bart Police Officers. Oakland police tell us that two men were wounded. The two suspects were wounded and sources tell me that one of those suspects has died. The other one has been critically wounded. Again, its unclear whether the shots sustained by the suspect came from the birt Police Officer but a gun was recovered at the scene. A gun that did not belong to the officer. Those two individuals have been taken to the hospital. One person is dead. One person critically injured and the bart offers whose gun was discharged is being questioned right now. The Oakland Police department is assisting at the scene. It was involved in this officer involved shooting. Two people hit. One person killed. One person critically injured. We can tell you Oakland Police confirmed that shots were discharged from the bart Police Officers gun but its unclear, as you mentioned, whether the suspects who were both wounded, both hit by gunfire were wounded by the officers gun or by the gun that they were wrestling over.
