The local forecasters in the National Weather service in maui talked about the circulation, the outer circulation around powerful category three Hurricane Dora f. Combined with circulation to the highpressure seven to the north has been a factor as it generated powerful wind gusts. Or is moving rapidly away from the island. It is losing its influence. There is another lowpressure system, a smaller storm to the south of the islands that could generate moderate gusts. Nothing like the 70 to 80 mileperhour winds we have seen so far. As you pointed out Drought Conditions prevail over much of the Hawaiian Islands especially in maui. The areas in yellow and orange indicate moderate drought. It is quite dry. Kristen the massive wildfires are moving so quick the people have little time to evacuate. Larry this is something in california we are used to because the fire starts, the wind starts blowing, the flames are about to swallow up an entire neighborhood. Karina nova, you spoke to a couple of people fortunate to get out. I spoke to two people here they are locals. They were able to escape. Both have homes in lahaina. They are coming to the realization their homes are going. The video we are seeing is hard to take in with so much devastation. This is video of the smoke over the harbor right there off of front street. And we can also see the fire from this boat looking at the smoke and flames taking over lahaina. This street might look familiar to you. This is at front and dickinson. I spoke to the woman who shot this incredible video while evacuating lahaina. Marjorie sinclair tells me the roads were closed and traffic is jammed. It is like lahaina is on fire. Karina she took a risk and drove on a street with flames on both sides. They were like tender boxes and i could not believe. I tried to get out one by going on the street by the First Hawaiian bank. It is like my god the First Hawaiian bank is on fire. Oh no. I dont know. Rome is burning you know. Kind of a deal. I have not had an experience like that before. Karina sinclair moved to maui from San Francisco a few years ago. She is hopeful her two cats survived because she could not them into crates and a time when she evacuated. This video of smoke near the heine was taken by bryce before he and his family evacuated last night from their house. They drove 40 miles away to stay with other family where they are trying to get updates. I dont even know where to start. I have so many friends that both their home and their jobs in lahaina and it has been burnt to the ground. It is like where do you begin to pick up after this you where is our whole Community Get to pick up after this . What do we even rebuild . How do we start . Karina there are some images coming in from lahaina that shows the devastation of a town visitors know well. Again, it is home to so many people. And a long time. They were in place where they had phone service. They both told me they would look to be able to escape. They are a few of the of hundreds of families who are displaced with no home. Any of these people dont have jobs. As both of you know from traveling as i know that is a place where a lot of people work. Kristen that is a huge tourist center. The shops and restaurants. All those jobs not going to be there for a while. Larry the economy is going to be devastated. From a personal perspective a lot of people know that i grew up on the islands. My best friend lived in lahaina. Spent so many days there. I want to see a picture of the banyan tree. It is one of the most famous landmarks on front street. A bunch of my friends have told me it is gone. Until i see it im going to hold on. I played on the banyan tree when i was a kid. My kids played on the banyan tree. It was planted in 1873. It is 150 years old. We can rebuild the waterfront with more fire retardant materials because a lot of the shops were wooden when this kind of thing happens they are going to go up. You are not replacing a and entry that has a banyan tree. Kristen so many of us have pictures. Karina so many of us have pictures. I was there on my honeymoon. You are thinking this is gone . I was just there a few months ago. Kristen there are 70 people in the bay area who feel that special connection. Karina a special home a second home or place they visited with family. Larry it happened so fast. Some people saying i could see the flames and it seemed like it was far away and a minute later it was on top of my house. That is what happens when these fire systems create their own weather patterns in the area. Everyone is taking their pictures there. Karina they have the storm that came through the hurricane that provided the winds that helped light the flames and spread the flames i should say. That is what they were telling me. It was so windy you could see the flames. Kristen we hope marjorie finds her cats. Karina two cats who she said were her kids. And all of west maui to think that a lot of it if not all of it is ravaged by the fires and will need to be rebuilt. It would be like if all of sausalito burned down. It is a unique historic beautiful place a replaceable and that is what is. Dustin eric is a board member with the Hawaii Chamber of commerce in northern california. He says using the former capital and landmarks like the venue tree are irreplaceable. And served as the center of the line government for more than 50 years. The center of town was declared a National Historic landmark district in 1962. There are a total of 62 historical sites in the district. Dont know how many were damaged by the fire pit the giant banyan tree was planted in 1873 in the center of town. It is massive covering an entire block standing 60 feet tall making it the largest in the u. S. I think there is a Community Center right behind it. I think there is a chinese landmark in church not far away. That whole area. So much history. Larry we attended a wedding there not too long ago. I have not been able to get in touch with them. Night and since conditions have only grown worse impacting nearly all communication. Others who plan to fly out of sjc expressed frustration to jessica and her husband had direct flights to maui for a nineday trip here they have since been diverted. The residence both admit they may be desensitized to the news of the fires devastation. We have the car fire a few years ago. We could see the flames from our driveway. And so we know all about how that works and evacuations and stuff like that. From what i have seen so far this morning it looks pretty bad but not nearly compared to what we are used to. Nothing from the airline. Nothing from anywhere. Nothing about what was going on during we had no idea until we got here to check in our bags to get on the flight. But for others with personal ties to the islands there is concern. She says her inlaws live on maui in an area already under evacuation.
